Not only was the cruise delightful, but every meal was carefully planned to meet my special dietary needs. I thought I would never be able to eat wienerschnitzel again, but the chef prepared if from scratch especially for me. Rhine River: I thought that maybe I would have to stay behind a lot on the shore excursions because of my physical limitations, but they had a "slow group" which was for people just like me (with a cane) and I only had to sit out maybe one castle or two at most. The windmills were majestic, the castle ruins were hauntingly beautiful, the quaint villages were lovely to shop in, and i loved the Christmas stores. We collect Nutcrackers, and we found 3 on our journey!! I will remember this cruise for the rest of my life! Simply Amazing! Finally, the ship was named IngVi. Well, my Mom was name Inge V. and she had this on her license plate! she passed away 12 years ago. She would have loved, loved, loved! this cruise! Read Less

My wife and I have cruised on our on sail & powerboats for 30 years so going on a cruise ship was never an option because of the number of passengers. The Viking Long Boat was just the right fit and we loved the fact that everyone on the cruise got together,in the same dinnig room and lounge, and we were not lost in a huge group of people. We had about 180 passengers and we got to meet many of them. The crew was also small so again we got to have personal relationships. We had two captains, because 1/2 way through our cruise the first one went on Holiday. They were both great and very accessible, as was all the staff. The staff wanted to be sure we enjoyed every minute of our stay on the Ingvi. Nick Hale our program director was outstanding and really made the trip for us. Our Hotel Manager,Heike Murphy could not have been nicer. The Concierge gal was from Poland and was lovely and full of enthusiasm as was all the crew. She and my wife who is half Polish hit it off and she was most helpful in making suggestions for our next cruise. The tours were outstanding. Our pick up in Basel and our off load in Amsterdam was military precission and flawless. The food was outstanding and Nick provided an array of entertainment. As I said we cruise on our own boat so the small accomodations were no issue and the room was well appointed and we especially enjoyed the bow cam on the T.V. House keeping did an excellant job and all of the housekeeping staff were very thorough and extremely pleasant. Dinning was excellant and the fact their wer options of where to eat, especially duringthe day made for a most relaxing time as we watched the shore line pass by and observed the river traffic. We highly recommend Viking to anyone looking for and exceptional cruise and the tours that are provided Read Less

This was our first experience on a Viking Long ship . It was truly a great experience and the upgrades over the regular ships is great. I sure that in no time all the ships with be long ships. The meals and the service has really improved or our previous cruise 6 years ago on Viking. I wished we had paid more attention to the bus rides that we were gong to have as it can as a surprise to us and that maybe partly because we did not get our tour information three weeks in advance as it should be. The shore excursions were all very good but a couple of them could of had more detail in the places we visited. For example we did not get to see enough of Nurnberg as it s such and important place in history. I suppose that this these trips are to tweek your interest and cause to want to return and see more. We appreciated the addition of the head sets for touring they were a real plus. The cabins were nice size with a larger TV than before and the fact that you could use 110 or 220 power was a great plus. We will no doubt be back Read Less

This was a great river cruise for older people. We found this to be the best vacation we have ever taken after many trips to Europe. We knew this would not be the spectacular items of London, Paris, or Rome. Maybe our expectations then weren't as high. We were going to relax and maybe see a few nice sites. We were surprised beyond our expectations. The river cruise was spectacular. The wine country was very nice. Great guides. Great wine. Super chocolate! Wonderful sites. I could live in Avignon or Lyon. There were many great things to see. Walking in the old city was very nice. We had superb guides in each city. They were very knowledgeable and very eager to share their experiences with us. The ship was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The staff was accommodating beyond belief. Some of them became nice friends. The size of the travelers on board made for a nice climate. We got to know more people than usual. The tours were broken down into 4 groups so we always had nice small groups with earphones so you could always hear the guides and be close. You got to know everyone. The meals were exceptional. For eight days there was not one thing to complain about. Everything was perfect! The trip was very well planned by the staff. I enjoyed the opportunity to see the wheelhouse and the kitchen. We liked the aquaterrace and the lounge. I guess I could say that the WIFI could have been better. It was spotty at times, especially through the locks. We were looking for a nice relaxing vacation and we got one along with 8 great tours, great wine, unbelievable food, and many super friends. Thanks Viking for a very well planned and executed trip to Southern France. We cannot wait to book another river cruise. Read Less

I would recommend Viking to anyone interested in doing a river cruise. Everything was fantastic from the day we boarded until we had to leave. The crew were very attentive and every need was met. We even had a dental emergency while onboard and the Program Director Petra and the Concierge took care of everything and then let us know what we needed to do. Cabins were very spacious and comfortable for what we had booked The meals were great. I loved the way that we could change tables and/seats for meals. Never had to be seated at the same table, if you did not want to. The availability to either sit on deck or sit in the lounge area and watch the scenery was wonderful. It was rather nice to be one of approximately 130 passengers instead of one in 2000+. Disembarkation for the tours was handled very smoothly and with not a lot of hassle. You do get your moneys worth when you cruise with Viking. The attention to detail and friendliness of staff and crew is beyond expectations. Read Less

One of the best cruises we have experienced overall. While there was not a lot of river travel, that left plenty of time for shore excursions to get up close and personal experiences at several different Chateaus and other wineries and into the wonderful historic tons and villages in the region. The staff on this boat was one of the best we have encountered. The food onboard was excellent. The tour excursions were all great and the optional excursion activities were outstanding. This was our first experience on a Viking "Longship". The ship's facilities were the best we have experienced. The upgraded balcony cabins were great and the extra room was well worth it. We will definitely plan another river cruise on Viking. Read Less

We couldn't have asked for more. We'd never been on a cruise before and were a bit apprehensive about just about everything: travel to Europe, size of cabin and amenities, food (my husband is picky), excursions (would there be too much walking for my husbands's bum knee), time at stops, etc., etc. Well, everything was absolutely wonderful. We made our own travel arrangements but from the moment we got out of the taxi at the port, we were treated with exceptional service. The staff was always helpful, friendly and always available. The food was magnificent (and there was a large selection to select from), the chef a delight, the excursions were wonderful and the tour guides had exceptional knowledge. There was plenty of time to enjoy all the sights at the stops as well as just relaxing and cruising on the river. Visiting Normandy was very emotional and we were so glad we got there. We have raved about our cruise to anyone who will listen and are planning on going on another with Viking in two years. Read Less

In celebration of the recent retirement of several members of our extended family, we (6 couples) decided to take a river cruise across Europe.Starting in Amsterdam, and sailing all the way to Budapest, we had a most memorable experience. The ship, and the city-stops, were big enough that we could get out on our own when we needed to and yet the ship was small and perfect for when the "family" wanted to be together. While the initial cost was quite a bit to fork over in advance, almost everything was included, such that , other than gratuities for th crew, there was almost nothing to pay for at the end. There was an included tour in every city/port (and we stopped at least once each day) that we stopped at, and with rare exceptions, the included tour was more than adequate. We wanted to travel the "Romantic Road", so we paid extra for that, and we paid for a special tour in Nuremburg. They were both worth the extra price paid. Meals were excellent. every dinner included 3 new entre selections and 3 other staples so that there was something for everyone. There were also at least 3 appetizers and 3 desert options. Embarkation was very easy and Disembarkation at each port and at the end of the cruise were mad easy by the crew. Our cabin was comfortable (lower level) and, with a small ship, everything on board was only a few steps away. We carefully chose this cruise by picking one that stopped at new and interesting places that we wanted to see. We planned our own pre-cruise touring in Amsterdam, and our own post-cruise trouing in Budapest. The VIking cruise allowed us to have this flexibility. The Viking cruise experience was outstanding. We passed on their optional arrangements for air transportation, and pre-cruise and post-cruise options, because a seasoned traveler can do much better!   Read Less

My husband and I along with another couple took an AMA Waterways extended Danube cruise this fall, which started far from the Danube in Istanbul and ended somewhat past the Danube in Prague. There were 14 actual days on the ship with an almost total turnover of passengers and some crew in Budapest. There were many highlights -- several on the land extensions. Istanbul and Prague are both bucket list cities and live up to their billing. The illuminated night cruise of Budapest was exceptional and there were a couple of surprising charmers (Bratislava and Pecs come to mind). There were some lowlights as well -- being bussed through northern Turkey and across Bulgaria could be skipped. The hotel in Bulgaria where we spent the night (a Ramada) was truly the worst hotel I've ever stayed in, and I've lived in Asia. Actually, touring the poorest part of Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia from the Danube is educational but not necessarily entertaining. The AmaPrima was a nice enough ship but oddly designed. The small "library" was sparsely stocked with a few random coffee table books but no matter, with the little low-voltage pin dot lights, you could barely see to walk much less read. A built-in buffet station in the middle of the main reception room made the frequent all-ship briefings and onboard entertainment awkward affairs as the space was broken up by this massive buffet. Putting the buffet station at one end of the room or the other would have made much more sense. For a relatively small ship, more attention should be placed on maximizing form and function. Overall, the tours were good and there were the occasional opportunities to bike although not as many as we had thought that there would be nor as flexible as we had thought. One of the bike tours required biking almost 20 miles. For the first 16 days, we had a cruise manager who was impossibly arrogant and very disinterested in the guest experience. His only concern was establishing the fact that he was the guests' social and intellectual peer. Had we not had the polar opposite for a cruise director the next 16 days, we would NEVER consider cruising on AMA again. Our second cruise director was such a delight and made each guest feel valued. He not only was knowledgeable but had such a delightful manner and presentation that the daily briefings were a joy. The only cruise experience we have to compare this to was a fabulous Seabourn cruise in the Baltic so we're not comparing apples to apples. Would we do Ama again? The jury's still out but probably not. Read Less

We enjoyed the atmosphere of the cocktail and Hors d' oeuvres in the Chesapeake lounge. The room was set up in a relaxing and friendly manor. The Hors d' oeuvres were delicious they were brought around fresh and hot. We loved the fresh fruit with breakfast the menu selection was excellent. There was something for everyone breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It was very carefully thought out and prepared. The state rooms were very impressive. I loved being able to hang up my clothes with ample amount of hangers. The deep draws in the bathroom were also a plus. We do not like clutter and there was none. This made our state room stress free. Activities and Tours Our favorite tour was Captain Jack's lobster boat. We found it very informative and were very lucky to be on the tour which weight and sold them. We also enjoyed the Penobscot Narrow observation tour. Playing bingo was so much fun. I can't remember laughing so hard for so long. Your Captain, first mate, waiter's and waitresses, the entire crew were dynamic. Read Less

We traveled with 3 other couples, one from Texas, one from Florida and my husband & I and the other couple from Kansas. We had never taken a river cruise before and were very happy with how it went. The staff was very friendly, courteous, helpful and professional. The Rhine River was beautiful with such gorgeous scenery along the way and smooth traveling. The towns/cities where the ship stopped were all close to port and we had some wonderful guides on the excursions. The food was wonderful and the included wine and beer were a plus(since they are not usually included with dinner on the ocean cruises). The entertainment was good and we especially enjoyed the music trivia contest, that our group won! The rooms were small but well thought out as to the needs of passengers. We were very lucky the weather was so beautiful, we only had rain one day. We did an extension to Montreux, Switzerland. It was marvelous. Our tour guide took very good care of us (we were in a party of 8) and gave us great tips to maximize use of our time there. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and plan to take another river cruise in the near future. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the experience. The tours were fantastic, the tour guides exceptional, and the on-board lectures very informative. The food and the food service was exceptional as well. The time was filled with as many activities as one could manage and any down time was your choice. We will definitely take another Viking cruise. They cost a little more but from what we can tell they are worth a little more. The only negative is the Viking suggested gratuity policy. Several of the passengers had gratuities included in the ticket price but many, including us, didn't. We were never offered the option. And Viking's suggestion was to tip everyone and tip them generously including a healthy tip to a general fund to be distributed to the crew. If we followed their suggestions that meant bring a lot of extra cash (although they offered the option to add tips to your bill). That aside it was a wonderful two weeks and we wouldn't have missed it. Read Less

As members of the Eagle Society, we are dedicated to cruising on American Cruise Lines. The Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise was our most recent and 4th cruise with American Cruise Lines. We thoroughly enjoy each cruise so we continue to explore their further offerings. Our next adventure will be the Historic South and Golden Isles Cruise. There are many reasons why we continue to cruise with American. The number one reason is that we love the small ship experience. There are always so many interesting people on board. Because the number of passengers is limited, one has an opportunity to meet everyone. The cabins are spacious and very comfortable. The service staff is most accommodating and the delicious gourmet cuisine is a reflection of the area in which we sail. The ports of call are always so interesting. The cruise is enhanced by the presence of on board historians to further the educational experience both culturally and historically. Bill Ewen further complimented our most recent trip with his in depth lectures of the area. We always find our trips with American Cruise Lines to be first rate and will continue to enjoy their hospitality. Read Less

Food and service were excellent, and the staff was just terrific. Any reasonable request was fulfilled. The new Viking long ships were delightful, with excellent accommodations, even though our state room was just below the water line. Cruising along the Danube, Main and Rhine was just delightful. When the weather allowed or that is was safe to be on the upper deck, it was just relaxing to view the wonderful sights along the river. The beauty of this cruise is you could be as busy or relaxed as you wanted. It all depended on your ability to keep up with the scheduled activities. Read Less

We started with a two-day pre-cruise package in Nuremberg. It really set the stage for the whole trip because Nuremberg was central in the history of the Holy Roman Empire. Our tour guide on for the pre-cruise package was a history major specializing in Medieval Nuremberg and she really put the everything in context. The crew of the Idun did everything they could to make our trip special. They were always friendly and warm. The ship was awesome and the tours were great. We thought most of our tour guides were top notch. Having the personal radios for the whole week to listen and synchronize with the tour guides was awesome. We did all the optional tours except the horse related. They were worth it to us. We thought the food was great. We are not big drinkers so having the wine at lunch and dinner was plenty for us. I did drink a lot of coffee from the break area. The people we met were awesome. We had so much fun with two other couples we all agreed to do a viking cruise together in 2015. We are booked for the Rhine Getaway cruise with one of the couples because the other couple had some medical problems. Can't wait! This was our first cruise ever. We ended up going for a river cruise because the intimacy, age group, and river scenery appealed to us. Read Less

Having never been on a river cruise we had the best time of our lives. Took it off our bucket list and celebrated our 51st anniversary.Vantage was recommended by our good friend who has used them many times. The trip started in Amsterdam and cruised the Rhine to Budapest. We learned so much about the different countries we visited as Vantage's guides were the best. Ship and its amenities were wonderful. We has a deluxe suite. Of all the things we did and saw the best were the people we met who will remain lifelong friends. As was recommended by another good friend we flew business class. Great Idea, obviously more expensive, but well worth it. Our stay in Amsterdam was 4 nights and what a wonderful city. We had such a great time that we have already booked France and Barcelona for Sept/oct 2015. Also thinking of the one after that. I would leave again tomorrow. I even made a movie of the trip which I will cherish always. I heartily recommend Vantage and any trip you are interested in. Read Less

Since our only visit to France had been on an ocean cruise stop in Cannes, we wanted to get a better feel for the country, the culture, and the history (oh yes, and the wines!). The cruise traveled from the Mediterranean to the Normandy Coast, with Paris in between. What more can you ask for? Along the Rhône, Saône, and Seine rivers we stopped at numerous towns and cities for (included) excursions of towns such as Avignon, Perouges, Dijon, Giverny, and Honfleur. Most notable were excursions to wineries in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Beaune, and the Pont du Gard and the Normandy D-Day landmarks and American Cemetery. The entire journey required two different riverboats, but the connection was something special as well. The included connection was from Dijon to Paris aboard the TGV, or Train à Gran Vitesse, France's high-speed train. What a pleasure to sit in power reclining seats and travel over 200 mph in smooth, quiet comfort. The real beauty for us is the way Vantage takes care of everything, from handling our luggage at the airport to escorting us through the Paris train station. There are no worries about catching a ride, how to get to a sightseeing attraction, or even "where are the restrooms?" QuietVox headsets are provided for all excursions, so you can comfortably hear your English-speaking guide even if you're half a block away. all excursions are divided into groups of 20-30 guests, so crowding is not an issue. Dining is superb, and the chefs go out of their way to provide local delights as well as traditional American fare. An example: "Rack of lamb with Dijon mustard crust, rosemary potato gratin, and ratatouille Provencale". Make no mistake, this is NOT a cruise for children (there were none on our voyage), but adults will find it very relaxing and most interesting. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, and we are so happy that we chose Viking! The Grand European Tour was everything we expected and more. The scenery, the towns and villages, the exposure to history, the daily tours, they were all we could have wanted. The Lif became our very own home for 15 terrific days and that was due not only to the comfort of the ship itself (which was beautifully designed), but was due in large part to the friendliness of, and the inclusion by, the crew. They literally became like family and made our time on board even more special. I think it is exceptional to report that we were a group of ten and not a one of us had a single complaint. What a spectacular trip that has given us so many great memories. Having arrived two days early we stayed at the Holiday Inn, Notre Dame. An accommodating staff, who prepared us for the events to come. Our embarkation, was easy- peasy and our stateroom on the AMALEGRO was more than just great, with plenty of room, storage and even an in room computer. The ship is spacious, extremely clean, tastefully appointed, and well managed. The meals were especially good, with variety and special attention to guests special occasions. Regional specialties were often served at different stops. Dining room service and attention was first rate. Hats off to the wait staff, and Pavil the maitre d' for always watching out for our every need. The shore excursions were excellent and we had the added bonus of the 70th Anniversary of D-Day to make our stay at Caudebec-en-Caux and our transport to the Normandy beaches the next day above our expectations. Our Normandy trip will be a lifetime memory. Our guide was one of the few non French tour guides (an American who resides in France) and she took us thru to the June 6, 1944, experience as if we were there - very emotional. Upon our return from the beaches, we had the surprise of the locals celebrating the 70th anniversary of their liberation that lasted late into the evening. Dozens of locals were dressed as G.I.s and World War 2 outfits, many of whom were driving fully restored war era Jeeps, toting gear and memorabilia. The evening was capped with a full orchestra playing Glen Miller songs, dressed in military garb and playing the tunes flawlessly. A memorable evening! We cannot applaud the staff enough. Annie, our cruise director, was always involved in our experience. She made sure we got off on excursions in a timely fashion & always cheered us with her ingratiating personality and smile. She even gave some really good singing performances and you could often find her on the dance floor after dinner adding to the fun or getting it started. Captain Franch was a joy. Although his English skills were limited, his engaging personality communicated with all the guests just fine. The entire staff was friendly, helpful and clearly enjoyed their work. This is a well managed and cared for ship. A rose for me upon arrival, a gift at disembarkation and a hand written THANK YOU card from the Captain and senior staff when we got home … very classy. August last year, perhaps a little late in the season but our fault we chose it. The first couple of days are spent in Moscow, one of those places that not so many years ago was almost impossible to go to. We had a fantastic time, ably assisted by our very knowledgeable Russian Guide Victoria. She seemed to know everything and used her skills as a guide along with her amazing grasp of the English language and the English sense of humour. The cruise took in some wonderful palaces at which we stopped for a tour and some free time. Uglitch, Kizi Island and it amazing wooden church and several other places. Our destination was St Petersburg, without a doubt the Jewel in the Crown. So much to see and so little time as the saying goes. The Hermitage, Peterhoff Palace, the list could be endless but you must do your own homework. As I said at the beginning August is a little cold but snuggled under a warm (provided) blanket drinking coffee under the ever moving stars was just priceless, (oh and the Vodka Tasting evening is good fun as well). Go you will not regret it. The sail date may be slightly wrong, cant remember the exact date we sailed. Read Less

My family discovered the ultimate vacation in 2013- a Viking cruise on the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel. It was fantastic from beginning to end! We just couldn't stop thinking about the great experience, so we booked another Viking cruise the following year, in 2014- this time from Paris to Prague, aboard the ship, Odin. The staff and crew were welcoming and the atmosphere was always relaxed and fun. The daily excursions were fabulous and interesting and included local guides. There was plenty of free time to enjoy the destinations. And we enjoyed everything on the ship- most of all- the food. We took thousands of pictures! We had an extended stay in Paris prior to the cruise and Viking took care of everything. Both of our cruises with Viking have been fabulous; I would call them both vacations of a lifetime. We are pleased with the quality of the Viking cruises and the planning that Viking has done to provide us with great destinations, great rooms, great food, and great fun! Life doesn't get any better than being on one of these cruises. And it won't take us long to get back to Europe next year for a third Viking cruise. They are absolutely the best! This was our first ever cruise experience and overall we loved it. If you've never tried river cruising you really should. The ship sails along at a leisurely pace and you'd barely know you were moving. There are 3 full meals a day in the spacious dining room, and opportunities for snacking and tea in the late afternoons and evenings, all at no extra charge. Drinks at the on-board bar are extra. There are many opportunities for excursions at each port, and optional extra excursions are available at an additional charge. These may be purchased about a month before your cruise date on-line, or may be added as an on-board extra, provided there is space available. The ship is a few years old (2009), but is still in beautiful shape and is very nicely appointed. Plenty of opportunities for relaxation and/or conversation in the ship's many public areas, so you don't ever have an excuse for sitting cooped up in that tiny cabin. And the food is EXCELLENT, especially at dinnertime, where you can enjoy a 5-course meal with complimentary wine, beer or soft drinks. The ship's intimate atmosphere is one of its best selling points. With only 70 cabins (140 passengers) and 39 crew members, there are plenty of opportunities to make and cultivate new friendships. Although my husband and I have traveled extensively in the USA, we have never taken a river cruise and my only cruise experience was a short ocean cruise some years ago. I had no desire after that to take another cruise until we were invited by our friends to go on a river cruise with Viking. From the time my husband and I boarded the Delling to leaving at the end of our trip, we couldn't have been more pleased with our overall experience. Everyone was very friendly and went above and beyond to make this a memorable experience. Our room was immaculate, and although a little small, we had more than enough room for both of us to store everything. Marek was the absolute best Program Director. I don't believe I have laughed so hard and even woke laughing the next morning after he dressed as Mozart. Viking is very fortunate to have him on their staff. You could tell that he really enjoyed what he was doing and interacting with the guests. The entertainment was great and even the staff took part in their costumes. Every afternoon before dinner we were briefed on the next day's activities and also had a copy in our room. There were more than enough activities to keep us busy and even additional entertainment like the wonderful concert in Vienna. The local tour guides were very knowledgeable and spoke English very well. We enjoyed our walking and bus tours and the free time to explore on our own. I particularly enjoyed eating in the dining room. We were always greeted with a smile and the service was wonderful. The open seating was ideal and you never felt like you were "stuck" with someone the whole cruise. This allowed you to meet new people if you wanted to or sit with people you knew. The food was delicious and we were able to eat a leisurely meal without feeling rushed. I really enjoyed traveling with Viking and look forward to going again. It was a great experience and we took home many good memories.   Read Less
