My mom and I thought this would be a wonderful trip on a river cruise to Portugal, a place neither of us had ever been. The positive critique 1st, the cabin was nice and the food overall was a 4 out of 5. I found very little of it relaxing because we were always on a very strict schedule: rise early and go to the dining area to eat breakfast before getting on the bus for the daily excursions. The tours were focused on vineyards more than anything. There were other visits to a church, monastery and a castle but we felt that it was all about getting there, breezing through and then off to the next place. We both felt that we had very little time to enjoy the ambience of the towns and cities to include having coffee and pastries in an outdoor cafe, going into shops to see and buy local goods of Portugal. It was disappointing to be there and hear about the culture of Portugal but not really offered anytime to see the goods they are famous for like tiles and cork products. This was one of our biggest complaints and when we inquired about it we received a very negative response. The excursions felt more like herding cattle from place to place instead of enjoying the people, food, and local culture. There was a lot of focus on vineyards which we understood that this was an important vineyard area but really was too heavy on the vineyards. Just way too much hurrying around for meals, boarding a bus, driving somewhere, looking around, and returning back to the ship for dinner. The river is very small. Review the map and you will see that. It was a continuous up the river, down the river, and then repeat and repeat and repeat.
