This cruise was chosen strictly for itinerary, which was a long-held dream come true. The ship and cabin got very old, very fast. This was our 6th cruise and the third aboard ms Noordam, our last cruise was back to back on this ship on the Med. And we really enjoyed that.
So based on our previous Hal experience we booked Alaska on the Nieuw Amsterdam... EXCELLENT.

My husband chose this cruise as a gift for my birthday. I had previously enjoyed travel on the Holland America Line ships and others had good things to say about HAL. It was his first ocean cruise.

Like uncrowded, mid-sized, cruise ships that visually, look like classic 'Ocean Liners'...not amusement parks.
Don't wish to spend my vacation lining up with 4000 other passengers for dinner or shows....on some of the huge cruise ships being launched now-a-days.
Enjoy more sophisticated crowd on Holland America...less 'Booze Cruise'...with cultured Guest Speakers and Seminars.

A group of friends chose the tour and we wanted to go with them. Going to the islands were terrific and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had not gone on a cruise in over 10 years, but disagree with the forced gratuity imposed by NCL as well as extra charges for dining and WiFi.

Based on this cruise, I am unimpressed with NCL in general.
Easy way to see the islands if you want to spend money on excursions.
Locale is about all this cruise has going for it.
The ports are not nice. The best being Kona which is run down and dirty.
We rented a car in Maui, private driver in Hilo and Kauai.
