We chose AmaWaterways (Ama) because we have travelled with them before and know what to expect. We wanted something personal and intimate and taking a river cruise with Ama is just that. This was our third time traveling with Ama and each experience surpasses the last. The food and presentation is absolutely amazing, top quality and service was outstanding. Our Cruise Director, Sebastian Leroy was charming, hospitable and the staff from top to bottom were extremely friendly and efficient from captain to the the waiters, bartenders, housekeeper et al. We had a wonderful time at the Chef's Table Dinner whereby the Chef hosts guests every night with his speciality. This special event is open to everyone on board on various days. This trip certainly has been a trip to remember fun from beginning to end. Only problem is it ended too soon and went by so fast. It was perfect. Read Less

It was our 40th. wedding anniversary and we wanted to celebrate with a memorable trip and AMAWaterways did not disappoint! Our ship, the Amastella, was a floating boutique hotel, with every imaginable ammenity; an outstanding crew and beautiful ambiance. The guest rooms are very comfortable and well appointed; we had an outside balcony that we enjoyed every night, while sipping a glass of wine and watching the sights along the Danube glide past. The daily shore excursions were great. We had terrific guides through each city or town that we visited and lots of fun at the folk festivals and beer gardens along the trip. The onboard amenities are topnotch, along with the staff. Our meals were sumptuous and plentiful, as my scales have shown, since our return home! Our cruise director, Kris was terrific. She seemed to be able to clone herself, because she was everywhere at once! We didn't hear a single word of complaint, other than "it's over, already!" We are already researching our next river cruise destination! Read Less

This was our first River Cruise and found it most enjoyable. The ship's company were friendly and willing to offer assistance whenever needed. The Cruise Director had all the tours arranged and well organized. She is a great asset AMA Waterways. The Captain and First Officer made them selves available to answer questions and socialize with the guests when not on watch. The wait staff and chefs were outstanding and the food was excellent and representative of the region and represented any five star establishment in a relaxed atmosphere. Being only having a 140 passenger it made it easy to socialize and make new friends. It was more intimate than the ocean cruises we have been on.This was our first experience on a river cruise, but will not be our last. Hats of to the Captain and crew, and AMAWaterways. This is a great concept and provide an opportunity to get to now the crew and for them to get to know you and your needs. Read Less

We hadn't planned on a cruise when we started planning our vacation but heard very favorable things about the Rhine cruise thought we would look into it. I have to say, one of the most wonderful vacations we have ever had. First of all I have to say that our Cruise Manager, Florentine is an asset to Amawaterways. The compassion this man had for some of the passengers was wonderful to watch. He was always in a good mood and always had a hello for everyone no matter the time of day. We could always see him checking out the various tours making sure everyone was enjoying themselves and making sure everything was running smoothly. The whole experience from start to finish was wonderful. We were met on the sidewalk by one of the crew who took our luggage on board for us. We were a little early so opted to go back to town for a look around. When we returned, even though our room was not ready, there was afternoon food available for the passengers. The food each day was beyond fresh and so good. We never had any complaints. If you didn't have a taste for something on the menu there was always a choice of items, such as steak, salmon, chicken, that you could choose from as options. The morning pastries for us early risers was always a treat. The ship was so quite and relaxing. The excursions were well planned and organized. Some days we had 2 excursions and one day we had an option of 4 to choose from. ALL INCLUDED in the price. The staff aboard were always friendly towards us. The ship provided flavored tea and hand clothes when we arrived back from excursions. Our room was always kept clean. We have nothing to say negative about our AMASonata Waterways experience. Thank you for making us want to go again. Also want to add, we have done large cruises before and probably won't go back to them. The smaller guest cruises is so much more friendlier. Read Less

We started three days before in Barcelona and then took a high speed train to Nimes, FR and settled in for various excursions off boat to olive farms, city tours, roman ruins, wine tasting and walks in vineyards and a visit to a truffle farm. We liked the tours because they had one for active walkers so we were able to cover a lot of ground and see many more parts to the villages and cities. The truffle farm experience was neat to see a dog find a truffle and then the tasting with wine and crackers was perfect. We also were allowed onto the Pont Du Gard aqueduct and actually had access and walked across inside the aqueduct. The cruise director "Camille" was so great and seemed to handle everything with hardly a hiccup. She recommended several additional sites and restaurants to stop and visit and especially gave us great info on our extended trips to Barcelona and Paris all thru AMA. The 130 passengers were a perfect size for this ship and dining was busy but not crowded, they had tables for 2/4/6 so dining was easy for talking and meeting new people. Also, our table always was perfect with wine and food because Elana and Damir were such h good and fun hosts...AMA is lucky to have them for their service excellence!!!! AMAWaterways provided the perfect experience for us and our friends to enjoy a vacation in Europe together! We were 4 couples from all over the US. We wanted time to visit and party together but also have time to persue our own interests. Personally, this was our third AMAWaterways River Cruise in two years. We have enjoyed the Seine and the Mosel, Rhine and Main previously. The "floating hotel"/ship was fantastic. Our room was comfortable and spotless. The food was award-winning and always delicious. We seemed to eat continuously. The crew was superb, friendly and culturally diverse. The excursions were delightful! They thought of everything, thank goodness!! The local guides were top notch. Entertainment on board included an in-house musician who played the piano beautifully. Local entertainers were quality vocalists, musicians, and folk dancers. Fun, fun, fun!! The only problem any of us could think of was it was just 7 days long. Read Less

We were lucky to happen upon a great deal on the Amawaterways Romantic Danube River cruise. It was an amazing trip, we were sent a package of information weeks before so we were prepared. Everything was so well organized. Their cruise director was amazing, there was nothing overlooked. Our excursions were well run and so interesting, something for every level of activity. The food was wonderful and the wines well picked, and the service staff was above reproach and so welcoming. I hated for the trip to end because we had become so close to them. The chef table is a must not miss experience! If you have a chance to do some of the extra excursions I totally recommend them, Schronnberg Palace was such an experience, and the concert in Vienna made the whole trip for me. I also did various castle hikes and the views made all the hiking well worth it. We never had a bad tour guide, all of them were very knowledgable and often funny as well. Make sure you choose the Trip to Salzberg, you get to see so much, including the church from the sound of music in a quaint little town. As and added bonus when we returned their were warm towels and hot fruit tea waiting which was so nice. The weather was not great when we went but it didn't seem to bother anyone as we were enjoying the trio way too much! There were only 142 people on the boat which made it easy to meet new people and make some wonderful friends. The ship itself was so clean and well maintained and our room was perfect, and most importantly the bed was very comfortable. Each night had different performers come in. The sounds of Austria was so beautiful, the Hungarian folk dancing so much fun, and the singer they brought in had everyone up and dancing with his music which appeared to everyone. This was a trip of a lifetime for us and Amawaterways made sure that it would be just that. I would travel with them in a heartbeat and will recommend them to everyone. Read Less

So wonderful to unpack once and ride the Rhine for 7 days. The staff were all very nice, helpful. The food for all three meals was excellent by their chef. Our table waiter was Deyan and he is the best, very jolly! Mimi cleaned our room daily and we loved her; she is so sweet! Other staff who did a wonderful job were Kata(tour guide wunderbar!), Guido(cruise manager), Alex(reception), Eliza(reception), Captain Rudi, Eduardo, and Marianna. Checkin was good and they offered us snacks and champagne. Each lunch and dinner was free wine and beer from the local towns we stopped in. We went from Amsterdam to Germany, France, back to Germany, then extended our stay 4 nights in Lucerne and Zurich Switzerland. Each city stop there were usually 3 optional tours included in cost. Tours were for slow, medium and fast walkers. Modern buses met us at docking to take us on tours. Every afternoon 3-4 was afternoon snacks and drinks. Ordering drinks outside of lunch and dinner at the lounge bar were reasonable like 6-7 Euros average. There is open seating(7-9am breakfast; lunch time varies; dinner usually 7-9pm but can vary). Late breakfast for those who sleep in. A very nice touch when we got to airport in Zurich on our last day, one of our local Swiss tour guides we had the day before (Marc) met us there and helped with bags and routing to our gate! A river cruise is much better than an ocean cruise; we are hooked. Our anniversary so they gave us a small cake and sang to us. Our favorite cities? Riquewihr France(beautiful medieval buildings) and Lucerne Zwitzerland. Read Less

This was our first river cruise after several ocean cruises. I am now hooked on the river cruises, as they said I would be! With only 121 on board, it was easy to meet people which made it more intimate than an ocean cruise. Areas were never crowded. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Food, wine and beer (from the regions we visited) was excellent. Also, 24 hour coffee machine, including cappuccino and expresso was very appealing. The Chef's Table was a wonderul culinary experience!! When we first entered our room, there was a hat for my husband and gorgeous shawl for me. Champagne and rose from the captain- Free postcards and postage. Such nice touches. Lots of appetizers being served. All of the excursions were well organized and interesting, Loved that they were included in the price of the cruise, with a few optional tours where you were offered, at an additional cost, to go to places like the Schonbrunn Palace and a Strauss and Mozart Concert-fantastic and worth the money! The guides were well informed. Loved the QuietVOX, so there was never a problem hearing the guide. The pace in visiting the towns was good. Never having been through locks before, we were fascinated. Great local entertainment each evening! The evening cruise in Budapest was magical. Edward was a great cruise director! I can't say enough how wonderful this cruise was!! She is the queen of happy!!!!!. Ship was perfectly clean and had everything that you could possibly want on board. The ship was like new in every way perfect inside and out. In motion the boat was amazing smooth as silk. Fun to sit on my balcony and watch the world go by. So smooth that I never woke from sleep from any vibration or noises even as we docked. Fabulous cruise! We cruised from Budapest to Vilshofen on the Amaviola, from the crew, cruise manager, food & wine, to the shore excursions - everything was absolutely flawless! The cabin was roomy, great bed and nice linens, with good storage space; bathroom was generously sized and even had a line to hang laundry in the shower This new ship has included more electrical outlets and charging stations to accommodate the electronic devices most of us use today. The bathroom was also equipped with LED lights to softly illuminate the room in the night, to allow you to use it without the blinding glare of turning on the overhead light: a small, but thoughtful inclusion. Warm cosy robes and slippers are also provided. The housekeeping staff did an exceptional job of keeping our cabin and the ship spotlessly clean. The culinary staff ensured every morsel of food offered was delicious, with eye-pleasing presentations. The fresh local foods were well-complemented by very nice wine pairings. The servers in the dining room and bar were warm, friendly and very professional and efficient in the performance of their duties, helping to keep us all relaxed, comfortable and very well-fed. Thank goodness for all the well-th ought out excursions with knowledgeable, English-speaking local guides, to accommodate differing interests, activity and mobility levels, allowing for all to enjoy as much or little exercise and sightseeing. We very much enjoyed the opportunity to explore our embarkation city of Budapest, it was a delight, as were each of those we toured on our cruise. The on-board briefings regarding the areas through which we were passing were interesting and the entertainment enjoyable. The cosy, ship atmosphere encouraged more social interaction among the guests, allowing for friendships to develop. Great job AMAwaterways. Read Less

Pre Cruise: The vacation started off in the worst possible fashion with all our luggage being mislaid en route to Europe. Equipped with only a small carry-on bag we duly arrived at the Westcord City Centre Hotel, sans our suitcases, for a three night pre cruise stay in Amsterdam. Although our room was very small, the Westcord was reasonably priced and proved to be an ideal base for exploring the sights and delights of beautiful Amsterdam. Centrally situated, the hotel was within (active) walking distance of most of the main museums and art galleries, the downtown shopping area, Chinatown, the floating market and, of course, the ill-famed red light district. On our first day in a new city we usually opt for a hop on/hop off service to help us quickly orient ourselves to the new, strange environment. However, on this occasion we decided to explore Amsterdam on foot and are glad we did as it gave us the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of the city and gave us a completely different perspective of the major sights from that of a canal cruise that we were to enjoy a few days later. Although our hotel was located some four or five blocks from the seamier side of town we nevertheless enjoyed the unexpected attraction of a few very attractive ladies of the night plying their wares from their rooms directly opposite our hotel window!! We were somewhat amused to witness how many middle aged men seemed to get lost in the street below, seemingly bewildered as they wandered up and down the street as if they did not know where they were!! We cannot commend the front office staff of the hotel enough for their commitment to customer service. They went out of their way to help us locate our missing luggage which happily arrived a mere day before we were to embark on our cruise. Our stay in Amsterdam was enjoyable. We think three days is quite sufficient to explore the major attractions. We had time to enjoy two of the many museums and art galleries, the Van Gogh museum and duly queued to visit the poignant Anne Frank House – both very impressive as was the floating flower market, while the mandatory stroll through the seamier side of the city was interesting to say the least although it was clearly noticeable that the business climate for the world’s oldest profession must have been pretty tight considering the number of prime trading windows up for rent! The Cruise: This was our second river cruise, both of which have been with AmaWaterways. Our first, some four years ago on the AmaCerto cruising the Danube from Budapest through to Vishofen with an add-on to Prague, was immensely enjoyable but we must confess that we were a bit disappointed with this cruise probably mainly because some of our perhaps overly optimistic expectations of the cruise were not always met. Apart from the one morning cruising the Rhine Valley that gave us many splendid views of the numerous impressive castles situated high on the banks of the river (made even more captivating by the misty, rainy conditions we sailed though), the Rhine is not the most picturesque of rivers with much of the countryside being pretty bland and repetitive. Also, coming from a temperate southern hemisphere climate, we had been hoping for snow in some of the towns we visited, even having the somewhat extravagant dream of experiencing a White Christmas for the first time. Sadly, temperatures did not drop sufficiently to entice the snow to fall and, we guess, this just added to our feelings that the cruise was perhaps, just that little bit less than what we had been expecting or hoping for. Nevertheless, our overall impressions of the cruise were positive. The better half has always wanted to experience the Christmas markets in Europe so the Rhine Christmas markets cruise gave us the opportunity of being able to tick another item off our ever extending bucket list and we again were reminded of the immense privilege we had of being able to experience the magical Christmas season in the ambience and luxury of the beautiful AmaPrima. Some random comments and observations about the cruise are detailed below. The ship: AmaPrima was in pristine condition and it was hard to credit the ship has already been sailing virtually nonstop for over four years. It was also tastefully decorated for the festive season festooned with lovely Christmassy decorations throughout the ship. Stateroom: We had been upgraded to a category B stateroom that offers both a standard French as well as an open balcony. The latter was seldom utilised because of the seasonally cold weather but the extra space offered by the higher graded stateroom was a boon indeed. Itinerary: We had chosen this particular cruise because it offered us the opportunity to experience the delightful Christmas markets that are unique to Europe. Even though our cruise was late in the season, we were fortunate that the markets were still open in all the quaint towns and villages visited during the cruise. Each market was distinctive and magical, especially after dusk when the true atmosphere of Christmas could be experienced with all the colourful lights and decorations on display. We were not disappointed. The markets in Cologne, Rudesheim and Strasbourg were particularly captivating. Tours and excursions: An included tour, usually a guided walking tour was offered in each place visited on the itinerary. Some were interesting, tour guides were invariably knowledgeable and competent, but we felt many of the towns could be better explored on one’s own. Indeed, many fellow passengers typically opted out of the guided tours and did their own thing. We enjoyed wandering through each of the places on the itinerary, getting lost on occasion and just soaking up the atmosphere of Olde Europe. The optional bus trip to the beautiful town of Heidelberg was perhaps the highlight although the general beauty and ambience of majestic Strasbourg was a close second. Cuisine: Good to excellent fare with the occasional memorable meal. The beef Wellington served on the last evening was equal to the best we have had anywhere and the tasting menu in the speciality Chef’s Table restaurant was also exceptional. We were nonetheless a little disappointed that the menus did not feature more, if any, local specialities – unlike our previous Danube cruise where traditional local cuisine was invariably included on the menu. A senior executive of AmaWaterways was on the cruise, probably doing a quality control audit of some sort, and in discussion with him and his delightful wife, he intimated that as the Ama’s customer base was primarily from the USA, menus generally had to be structured to cater for relatively bland American tastes. He indicated it was difficult therefore to find the right balance between more adventurous traditional local cuisine and the fare the primary customer base was used to and wanted. A pity because this minimises the “European” experience quite considerably. We were also a little surprised that nothing more was made of the dinner on Christmas Eve which coincided with the Captain’s farewell dinner. No special Christmas menu, no Christmas crackes, no special decorations – nothing, it just felt like a normal night on the cruise. Entertainment: Probably the most disappointing aspect of the cruise experience. Quite frankly the entertainment offering was poor by any standard. On our previous Danube cruise we had local singers, dancing groups and musicians entertaining guests almost every night either on board or through included local excursions, such as visits to a local wine bar and beer hall with oom pah band! Not so on this cruise where apart from an excellent (if misplaced) musical trio (pianist, cellist and violinist) and a pretty mediocre, ageing rock performer, the only other entertainment offered was a liar’s quiz and some enthusiastic carol singing from members of the crew. Nothing memorable. Some music with a more Christmassy theme would have been welcome. Service: Outstanding! Officers and Crew: From the genial, highly visible Captain, through the Hotel Director, to the barmen, waiters and cabin attendants, the crew generally impressed as being happy, close knit, competent and well trained. The Cruise Director Martina was exceptional in every way always being prepared to go the extra mile and attend to the miscellaneous needs and requests of passengers, without complaint despite her already onerous workload, and always with a bright, infectious smile. Fellow passengers: The usual suspects, mainly North American with a generous smattering of Australasians and a few Brits. As usual, we were the only South African on board! We nevertheless met some really nice people including a couple from Florida and what proved to be out regular dinner companions, a professional couple from Tennessee and a couple of Aussies who were relocating to Europe on business. Exceptionally nice, interesting people with whom we had many a lively dinner conversation on a variety of topics! Post Cruise: We had opted for the post cruise add-on of two nights each in Lucerne and Zurich. After disembarking in Basel on Boxing Day, we spent a wasted morning ambling around the deserted town until the tour bus took us to Lucerne arriving in this most delightfully situated city in mid afternoon. Our hotel was the truly five star Schweizerhof situated in the most majestic setting overlooking Lake Lucerne with good views of the distant Alps. The tour package included a guided walking tour through the town – very interesting and for the rest of our short stay we toured the town and its surrounds on our own. There was an optional (expensive) excursion up Mount Pilatus but we had been on a similar excursion on a previous visit to Lucerne and, as there was no snow on the mountain, we decided to save our money. After a short uneventful cruise across Lake Lucerne, we then departed by bus on a very scenic route along the banks of the lake en route to Zurich. As Zurich is situated in a relatively flat part of Switzerland, the scenery progressively got more and more mundane and we were pleased to reach our hotel in this very busy city in late afternoon. The following morning we had an included part bus, part walking tour of the inner city. A few landmarks to see but, frankly nothing noteworthy – just another big city experience! In the afternoon we opted to join an optional tour that took us through some picturesque villages that featured many impressive wooden homes to the Rhine waterfalls and included a boat ride right up to the falls which, although incredibly small at only 30 metres high, are nonetheless quite beautiful. The following day we took the train from the central station which was only a block away from our hotel to Zurich airport. Only a ten minute comfortable train ride for about 13 Euros compared to a taxi, that could take up to fifty minutes to an hour depending on traffic, for at least 50 Euros excluding tip. Then it was a short flight to Frankfurt for our return flight that evening to South Africa. Overall impressions In the highly competitive river cruising market where AmaWaterways has been consistently rated as one of the best river cruise lines in the industry, we couldn’t help but feel that Ama was resting a wee bit on it’s laurels. It is appreciated that there is only so much one can do to differentiate a specialised product such as river cruising, especially where one is attempting to compete in the luxury cruising segment where many competitors are already offering a more fully inclusive experience. For instance, offering unlimited beverages during meal times is all very well, but there is something off-putting having to fork out cash for a pre-dinner glass of wine when it will be provided free some few minutes later! Such “nickel and diming” in a segment where some significant rivals in the industry provide free alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at all times needs to be questioned if Ama wants to remain relevant as a luxury cruise line of choice. Of course, this is all a matter of market positioning and it may well be that the AmaWaterways top team have decided to pitch their product at a more mass market river cruising public. However, if it strategically wants to continue to appeal to the more discerning, (and demanding), upper end of the market, it is felt the company will need to up its game to remain truly competitive. Despite these, in the greater scheme of things, minor reservations about some degree of complacency perhaps creeping in about the AmaWaterways brand, we still had a great and relaxing voyage on board the beautiful AmaPrima. We met some wonderful people, enjoyed the ambience and up market facilities on the vessel and, of course, were quite captivated by all the magical Christmas markets we had the opportunity to see – the primary reason we took this particular tour anyway. And we still remain acutely conscious of just how enormously privileged we are that we have the necessary (albeit rapidly depleting ) funds and especially our health and mobility, to be able to continue to enjoy another aspect of our glorious planet in such comfort and relative luxury. After a lot of research, I chose Ama Waterways because of their price, a lower cost (but better coverage) for trip insurance, better excursions, more on-board activities in the evenings and because they were rated highly on many websites. They were also the only cruise line I investigated that had a dedicated massage room on board. It was a great way to fill a cold afternoon on the river. We had a room with an outside balcony, which was something we both really wanted. I chose the Rhine river cruise because we both enjoy German wine and I knew the scenery would be beautiful. The ship, AmaPrima, is very new and beautiful on the inside. Our cabin was just as spacious as a smaller hotel room and was more than adequate for the one week stay. The housekeeping staff is so wonderful - hospitable and friendly. We really enjoyed meeting all of them and they seem to have a lot of pride in their work. The dining was fantastic. We felt that there were always plenty of choices for every meal. Fresh bread was made every morning and every meal was plated beautifully. There is a strong attention to detail that we loved - we felt very well taken care of. We celebrated our anniversary on board. The dining staff brought us a beautiful cream cake while they dimmed the lights and played "Unchained Melody", then all wished us a happy anniversary. The evening at the Chef's Table was a chance for a smaller, more intimate venue for dining and we loved it. Each evening there was entertainment in the main lounge - a variety of local talent that was very professional and enjoyable. The shore excursions we great! One of the reasons we chose Ama is that they offer several different groups for excursions based on physical activity. We are not "Active Walkers" and we switched from "Regular Walkers" to the slower paced group because we realized it allowed more time to take pictures. The afternoon that we cruised the Rhine castles was very chilly, so the entire staff of the ship took extra care to make the guest comfortable. They wiped off chairs top-side, brought blankets for everyone, and circulated with hot coffee to warm people up. My only (really tiny) complaint was that the ice cream sundae bar didn't last long enough. But they had fresh made ice cream every day at lunch. We are looking forward to our next river cruise and will definitely book with Ama Waterways again. Read Less

We completed the Melodies of the Danube crusie: Budapest to Vilshofen, October 13 to October 20, 2016. This was our second cruise with Amawaterways. The first cruise, two years ago with the AmaLegro on the Seine, became the benchmark against which all other vacations since have been judged and found lacking. We were worried we had built up our expectations too high and might be disappointed by our second river cruise with Amawaterways. We were delighted to find the Amaviola, her Captain and crew, not only met our expectations, but exceeded them. Our cabin and the entire ship was tastefully decorated. The cabin had ample storage space to allow us to store our clothing and other belongings for the journey and the bed allowed for a comfortable night’s sleep. This newer ship has included more electrical outlets and charging stations to accommodate the electronic devices most of us use today. The bathroom was also equipped with what I assume were tiny LED lights to softly illuminate the room in the night, to allow you to use it without the blinding glare of turning on the overhead light: a small, but thoughtful inclusion. Warm cosy robes and slippers are also provided, but for the colder months, to improve an already wonderful experience, we would welcome heated tiled floors in the bathroom for future upgrades to the accommodations. The housekeeping staff did an exceptional job of keeping our cabin and the ship spotlessly clean. The culinary staff ensured every morsel of food offered was delicious, with eye-pleasing presentations; it was next to impossible not to at least sample a bite of everything! The fresh local foods were well-complemented by very nice wine pairings. We would have also liked to have had the opportunity to sample some of wide variety of the locally brewed beers with our meals. The servers in the dining room and bar were warm, friendly and very professional and efficient in the performance of their duties, helping to keep us all relaxed, comfortable and very well-fed. Thank goodness for all the well-thought out excursions with knowledgeable, English-speaking local guides, to accommodate differing interests, activity and mobility levels, allowing for all to enjoy as much or little exercise and sightseeing as they may wish and in our case to burn off some of the calories accumulated to allow more guilt-free enjoyment of the next offerings. We very much enjoyed the opportunity to explore our embarkation city of Budapest, it was a delight, as were each of those we toured on our cruise. The on-board briefings regarding the areas through which we were passing were interesting and the entertainment enjoyable. Our favourites for this cruise were the Slovakian dancers and the opera duo. We prefer to be kept both mentally and physically active on our vacations and Amawaterways does not disappoint in this regard. The cosy, ship atmosphere encouraged more social interaction among the guests, allowing for friendships to develop. From the warm welcome aboard, including a rose from the Captain to the ladies, to the last farewell, we were pampered by the crew who went beyond our expectations to provide exceptional service and make us feel relaxed and at home. For most vacations, we are ready to leave and eager to get home to our own beds, not so with this holiday! We were sad to go and look forward to our next opportunity to enjoy the comforts and exceptional service provided by the accommodations and staff of AmaWaterways. Well done! Read Less

The ship holds a maximum of 146 passengers, but only 104 passengersd were aboard for this cruise. The cabins, while small when compared to most ocean liners, were larger than many river cruises; quite adequate and well decorated. The beds were very comfortable and the cabin staff attentive to the nth degree, especially Georgiana. The bathrooms were quite roomy and well supplied with toiletries and the all important hair dryer for my wife. The in-cabin entertainment system was good, although to be honest we did not use it a great deal other than to watch some news, but they did have a large assortment of films and music available,. Wi-fi is gratis and to my surprise worked very well; much better than on larger ships. Food and dining were quite good overall. Breakfast was buffet style, but with a young lady making terrific omlets and eggs to order as well as the usual breakfast items and some less than usual items for most Americans.. Breads and pastries were excellent and required a bit of self control in order not to overdo it. The highlight for foodies was the special Chef's dinner to which all guests are entitled to attend. The menu is fixed for all seven nights and only 24 people are accommodated at a time. The items are all cooked in one location and served to each table as the food is ready. The service was superb and most of the items very good. The cod could have used a bit more seasoning.Wine, a nice selection of different reds and whites from the Bordeaux region as well as beer, are complimentary at all meals. Most entrees at the dinners were quite good, but the stand outs for me were the filet mignon and the prime rib. Each night there was always a Chef's Choice menu as well as several other items from which to choose.. If none of the menu choices for that day were appealing, one could always order a steak, salmon or chicken. One of the best ideas the line has instituted is to have a light lunch served buffet style in the lounge rather than the main dining room. Selections are limited, compared to the main dining room, but by no means lacking in many good choices. Salads and soups were always available as well as frog's legs and escargot at one of the lunches. Surprisingly I do not think they offered onion soup st any time. We did have some delicious deserts and the chocolate crepes were outstanding. The entertainment was limited as one would expect on a very small ship, but they did have a pianist who was quite good and brought aboard several entertainers; Frankly, I found this line offered better entertainment than most river cruises. The highlight of the cruise was an incredible staff-Kriss the cruise manager was unbelievable even getting up to see us off the boat at 4:15 am and providing us with a packed lunch. The front desk staffed by Ivan and Yasmina, during the day and a night attendant whose name I can't recall, were most helpful at all times and made us feel welcome and important addressing our every request with a smile. The bar staff and all of the waiters and waitresses were attentive, warm and friendly. The tours were excellent and our regular tour guide, Elisabeth, was beyond belief. She even managed to find us a local person on Bordeaux to take three of us on a special tour of the local synagogue. For the biking enthusiasts, they have quite a few bicycles and helmets and a bike tour led by Chris almost every day. We loved virtually all of the ports and excursions, but the highlight for us was St. Emilion. Not only a great wine producing regions with world famous wineries, but a delightful and charming village retaining much from the Middle Ages , including the catacombs and underground churches. I have no doubt we would go again and surely will consider another cruise with Ama Waterways Read Less

This is our second AMAWaterWays cruise and we were again rewarded with a thoroughly enjoyable river cruise. The Amadolce cabin was spotless and in excellent condition as were the public areas. The crew with Captain Danny and Cruise Director Helene was one of the best we've experienced in over 30 years of ocean and river cruising. They were friendly, attentive, responsive and prompt. The tours were great and well paced and gave an insightful education on French wines. The food and wine selection onboard was very competitive with some of the best local restaurants in the Bordeaux region. The wait staff was fun, friendly, responsive and made us feel that the Amadolce was our river home for the week. Housekeeping was impeccable and Georgina, our stewardess, was a delight with her engaging personality and warm greeting in addition to the care she gave our cabin. My wife had a post-operation medical problem toward the end of our cruise and the staff was on top of the medical situation instantly, brought a doctor on board and helped us get treatment that she needed. The Purser, Captain and Cruise Director all demonstrated concern, empathy and acted to help ease my wife's issues. We were very grateful. Read Less

We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary aboard the AmaSonata and the whole cruise couldn't have been better! The room was small but well appointed. Breakfast and lunch buffets were excellent and at dinner there were many options off the menu. I had told them prior to the cruise that I had an allergy to cheese, and all the waiters were aware of this and they accommodated me. For our anniversary night, we ate at the elegant Chef's Table, a separate small restaurant apart from the main dining room. It was elegant and they feted us with a cake and song. The off-ship tours were very well arranged. There was something for all ability levels. Whenever we had the option, we took one of the guided bicycle tours offered. This was one of the reasons why we chose AmaWaterways over others. It was a fairly small group of bicyclists, no more than 20 persons. The entire staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome. We especially enjoyed our cruise director Raul. There was entertainment both on and off ship, usually very high quality, especially the classical music concert offered in the evening in Vienna. We were attending a cousin's wedding in Switzerland and wanted to combine a river cruise with our trip. We were certainly not disappointed! I evaluated several cruise lines and finally decided on AmaWaterways. From the moment of embarking to disembarking, the captain, Ron, the cruise manager, Csaba, the hotel manager, Gemma, the maitre'd, Alen, the various waiters, the housecleaning crew, provided A+ service. Our room was of ample size. We had the room with the French balcony. We could easily move about and we loved looking out the window as we sailed down the Rhine. The shower was excellent. The linens were sumptuous. Meals in the dining room were great. I believe all the breads, baked goods, etc are made fresh on the ship. It was enjoyable to eat meals related to whatever port we visited. We started out in Basel and traveled north (which is actually DOWN the Rhine). Our first stop was Breisach Germany. A short bus ride took us to Riquewihr France. (There was another option to tour Frieburg and Breisach.) we loved our tour of Riquewihr and to learn of its history and how it survived Hitler's orders to burn every village as they retreated back to Germany in the fall of 1944. A USA regiment (#36) from Texas saved this town from destruction. This began our tours along the Rhine. Each stop was unique in its own way. The cruise manager prepared us well for each excursion. Returning to the ship each day after our outings felt like "home". I highly recommend this cruise. The Rhine has many options and Amawaterways seems to excel above the others. We hope to do another AmaWaterways excursion in our near future. Read Less

AMA was recommended to us for it's food and service. It more than lived up to my exceptions in every way. The food was memorable both for it's preparation and quality. In each country they served the food specialty from the area plus many other items. Unlimited wine and beer were served free of charge at lunch and dinner. Our cabin was lovely with ample storage and sitting space. The TV with the apple was a great plus. AMA is know for it's split balconies. Most cabins have both a french balcony and an outside balcony. You could choose depending on your mood or the weather. The service was as good as in any three star European hotel. We liked the tours on land because you could chose your speed and ability from gentle walking to heavy hiking or biking. Every person used a Quietvoxes on land tours to clearly understand what the guide was telling us. I would go an AMA cruise again in a minute. Read Less

My husband and I are in our mid to late fifties. We have been on several ocean cruises. We enjoy the aspect of unpacking once on cruises plus having all your meals arranged. After two successful cruises on a moderate priced line, we wanted to try Amawaterways because we heard many good things about them, especially that their food was high quality. Even though Amawaterways was more than a few hundred dollars more than the other brand, we were pleased with our choice. Would I use the other moderate line again? Yes, because for us, the quality of the tours is most important and we didn't find any difference between the two lines. The food was better on Amawaterways, but food is not the most important thing to us, the food on the other line was average, and Amawaterways was above average. The only time the food on Amawaterways was exceptional was our one meal at the "Chef's Table". We loved the itinerary of the Budapest with Munich extension. Others on the sailing chose the Prague extension. You can't go wrong with either. For us, Munich was on our bucket list and having the ease of the transfer plus the high quality guides that Ama provides was the reason we chose to do the post cruise with Ama instead of DIY. I do think that the staff on the Amasonata were trained very well. The Cruise Manager, Viktoria was outstanding. She was very detailed oriented and I watched her noticing little details that could be improved on the ship and mentioning it to the person responsible in a very diplomatic way. I am a "big picture person" versus a "detailed oriented" person. Some folks might be impressed with the red rose given to each woman at the welcome party, or the gifted scarf at the end. For me, it doesn't matter. . . the rose, I gave it to them to put it in a group vase because what was I supposed to do with it? The scarf was a nice gesture but I really don't wear scarves. . . Our last two cruises we went Aquarium Class. We saved at least $1,000 by going this way. We were very pleased especially because the square footage was exactly the same as the French Balcony cabins on Avalon. This time, I decided to try a French Balcony cabin because I wanted to know if there was any big difference, enjoyment wise, or if the cabin was less noisy going through the locks. By the time I booked, there were no French Balcony cabins available, only dual balconies which is a french and an actual balcony combined. What the hay, we went for it. We were Cabin 216 mid ship. We were able to use our balcony several times in port because we got lucky. If you are not aware, because of the popularity of river cruising, the ships double dock and even triple dock while in port. This is termed "rafting". There were some occasions when we looked out our balcony, all we saw was another ship's balcony. (Read more about rafting on the CC River Cruise boards about this before deciding if you want to spend extra on the balcony) Bottom line, the balcony was a lovely extra, but I'm on the fence if it is worth the at least $1,000 extra in fare. The excursions of Amawaterways were excellent. There was always many different choices as to activity level. Amawaterways took extra special care to those in the gentle walkers group. I am not a gentle walker myself, but I can heartily recommend that you consider Ama if you need a little tlc. If you are an active person, Ama is also perfect for you. There was always a hike, which near the Danube involved walking up hundreds of steps to a castle lol, and a bike ride. The guides on the "regular" tours were very informative and interesting. The service was very good on the Amasonata. We met some new friends who have cruised on the Regent ocean cruise line, and they were a little disappointed with the service, just throwing that in as a reference point. Most of the staff was very friendly and work hard to make you happy. The only negative aspect of our trip was the selection by Ama of the post cruise extension hotel in Munich. The location of this hotel was a very poor choice and one would think that Ama with all of their detail oriented customer service would have better quality control. Not going into detail here, but I'm certain Ama knew about the changing neighborhood surrounding LeMeridien Hotel and should have been proactive in changing the hotel even if it meant that they would lose money. . . In summary, Amasonata is a beautiful ship with a friendly, hardworking staff. They work together to give you a wonderful vacation. Amawaterways might cost a little more than other lines, but the extra cost is worth it. Read Less

From the ship to the crew, cruise manager, food & wine, to the shore excursions - everything was absolutely flawless! The cabin was roomy, great bed and nice linens, with good storage space; bathroom was generously sized and even had a line to hang laundry in the shower; had a very nice balcony to sit on when we weren't feeling sociable. The ship is new, and looks fabulous. There is a small pool with a swim up bar on the sundeck. Lots of space to lounge & socialize up there, too. The crew were fantastic, every one of them was concerned that we had everything we wanted when we wanted it, and even if we didn't know we wanted it. The cruise manager was very personable, and gave us loads of tips about the ship, ports and excursions. The on board and dock-side entertainment was excellent, all quality local talent. The excursions were all perfectly managed, prompt, and gave us a great overview of the cities we visited. Not only can I not find a single thing to complain about, I have to say I give them a rave review. As we were traveling, we asked our fellow ship mates what they thought, and all felt the same - awesome in everyway. Some were *very* frequent cruisers on many other lines, and said that this had been their best experience yet. It's definitely a case of 'you get what you pay for.' Read Less

We had the most incredible experience aboard the AmaSonata, and would highly Ama Waterways to anyone interested in river cruising. This is especially the cruise for you if you have any special dietary needs. My husband and I are both vegan, and were blown away by the delicious, healthy food we encountered at every meal. We've travelled on quite a few ocean liners, and were used to only getting sub-par tofu or soy protein dishes, which often lacked flavor and nutrients. But, we were delighted to have an entirely new experience aboard the Ama Sonata. The chefs aboard took such great care of us, giving us new and unique dishes every day with a variety of healthy proteins ( lentils, quinoa, polenta, beans, etc.). The chefs even made us a delicious raw wrap ( with almond cheeze) one evening. The waitstaff always made sure we were taken care of and we never felt like we were a bother. We've never had such great food or service on a vacation and were so grateful! The staff on the ship really went above and beyond to make our stay special. They were always so kind, fun, and helpful. And the ship itself is gorgeous with wonderful rooms. We especially appreciated the variety of tours offered, including bike tours! And, if you're lucky enough to get Dejan as your cruise manager, you will be very taken care of. His delightful, positive energy and hard work really made our cruise special. If you want to river cruise, Ama Waterways is the only way to go, you will not regret it! Read Less

As newcomers to river cruising we were a little apprehensive before our trip but now cannot imagine that any other company could beat Amawaterways for the standard of our holiday. The ship was beautiful, the crew attentive and welcoming and the cruise manager an absolute delight. The trip went smoothly right from the chauffeur driven transfer to the airport and the welcome at the other end to the excellent care shown to us on board (little touches such as supplying gloves for us on a particularly wet bike trip were much appreciated). Everything was of a high standard and the programme of excursions was varied and well organised. The cabin was very well appointed and had the benefit of both a full balcony and a French style one so was very light. We were on the Cello deck as the Violin one was fully booked but we couldn't see any disadvantage in that. We will definitely go on another river cruise and would choose Amawaterways again and would recommend others to use them also. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we were not disappointed. It was everything we wanted it to be and more. We took a cab from the Basel Airport and was dropped right off at the ship. Embarkation was a breeze and we were in our room with our luggage within 15 minutes. We had room 2106 which had a French Balcony and it was larger than I anticipated. It was perfect. We thought the food was wonderful and the wine pairing they did every night was so good. Also loved how everything was included. As you walked off the ship to do an excursion you were actually given water and not charged! I am so tired off the nickel and diming that gets done on cruises and it was refreshing that it never happened once! It was a perfect trip and we have been on 10 other cruises and I thought river cruising was the best especially with Ama. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we were going with another cruise and they had cruised with AMA before...We decided to spent an extra two nights in our departure city of Amsterdam before the cruise and then added the 4 night land package to the cruise as well. All I can say is that everything was perfect...our cabin was great and we did not chose the largest one available, our bed was so comfortable and the bathroom was very nice as well. The ship was beautiful and clean and modern and upscale...dining was out of this world, the service was perfect but not too stuffy, the ports and shore excursions was spot on and the whole thing ran like a perfectly oiled machine but you didn't really notice, it was all just very natural. The crew took such good care of us and spoiled us and there were tears in my eyes on the day we left the ship. Our cruise director was unbelievable and was always willing to go the extra mile to make every thing work well. I know that we will certainly do another cruise with AMA, the only hard part is deciding which of their trips to do next. Read Less
