A friend looking for a quick getaway received information about this particular cruise and passed it on to me. Based on recommendations from others who had gone on the cruise, we decided to go for it. Complaints: (1) Too many kids, even in the Solarium--which was supposed to be an adults-only space. Crew seemed very reluctant to police kids who were out of control (climbing on railings; running around the dining room; hopping from chair to chair on the deck. (2) Coco Cay beach experience - RC promised a barbecue on their private Island. When we reached the island (12:30- 1:00) our first task was to secure seats and relax in the sun. Went to get food around 2:00, only to find that it was all gone--there was not even water or juice to be had. (3) Cape Canaveral port of call was not very interesting. There was nothing to do unless you were travelling with children and planned to go to the amusement park--which I understand there was very little time between the travel to and from to really enjoy the park. Overall, I think we made a good choice. The ship was beautiful, there was much to do on board. Especially appreciated the galley tour and brunch, and the comedians were great. Read Less

Anthem March 5-12 Embarkation was a nightmare... you get scheduled in blocks of time, and when we arrived there were crowds clustered around staff with check in computers. There were no ropes, stations, etc.... we had done the online check in and loaded our own pictures, but we had to wait anyway. There was no one organizing anything or answering questions. We just guessed our best and joined a crowd and waited. It took us over 1.25 hours to get on board. If you haven't cruised on Royal Caribbean , here's the mistakes we made. You need to book your excursions BEORE you get on the ship!! I didn't know this, they were 'sold out' of the ones we wanted to do.... Also, as soon as you get on the ship, book your reservations for on board activities such as I Fly, the North Star, music shows like Spectra, the Gift, etc. We couldn't get reservations to most of the 'included' activities. Also, get to the activities like bumper cars, etc a half hour before they start, or you'll never make it thru the lines. Also, the elevator access for the North Star was out of order, making it very difficult but not impossible for someone with slightly impaired mobility to go in it. Also, one of the elevators for the stateroom access was out of order the whole cruise. On the bright side, the ship was very clean, public restrooms were well kept, and the main dining room foods and service was outstanding. The shows we could see were great, and I felt very safe the whole cruise. The musicians in the bars (especially a Girl Named Jake) entertained us... I had a great time, but wished I knew ahead of time about the reservations for activities. Read Less

Embarkation: The port is a bit disorganized. Parking is easy. Once in the terminal, the staff was disorganized and there is very little direction. We were on the ship in in about an hour. Ship: Very nice ship. We did not like this as much as the Oasis class ships as this ship always felt crowded. Food: Food was very good and portions were larger than other RCCL ships. Main dining room was fairly empty most nights. Dining staff was excellent. Room: The rooms on this ship are the best we have stayed in. These are identical to the Harmony. Plenty of room for four in a balcony stateroom. Shows: The best show we have seen on a ship. All of the shows wer excellent. We reserved our n advance but saw We Will Rock You twice as it was very good. Ports: We took this cruise because it left close to home so the itinerary was not that important. Port Canaveral was alright. We walked to the beach. Coco Cay was tendered. This ship is too large to tender. It took three hours to tender the ship. We went to the beach but came back quickly to enjoy the empty ship. Nassau was mobbed as there was 5 ships in port. We went off early and came back and enjoyed the empty ship. Activities Make sure you have reservations and do all activities right away. All activities get mobbed especially at sea days. There are too many people trying to do the activities Disembarkation Very easy. We were in the car and driving home at 7:15 am. The fastest ever off of a cruise ship To sum up, I would probalbly do this cruise again but would do an Oasis class before the Quantum class in the future. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the port (Close to home) and to try the new ship! She is a big beauty but worth the extra steps!! Sooo much to do and even with 4000+ passengers we never felt crowded. The music hall was great for the late night dancing. 270 was a great venue but sadly under used and the bar staff in there is AMAZING but again, it was an early close bar. Closed at 11 unless there was a crowd but nothing going on in there to draw a crowd other than the great staff behind the bar. The food was good, not great but always good. Sorrentos Pizza, friendly staff but lousy pizza. They don't even have garlic as a topping!! I only ate there once. Wine tasting class was interesting and informative though the "teacher" was a bit long winded. Onboard activities, you could not ask for more!!! Ifly, Flowrider, Rockwall, Bumper cars, Roller Skating, Circus School, puzzle room, pools and arcade and on and on and on. Loved this ship and it's crew and will cruise on Anthem again!!! Read Less

Choose this cruise because of its local departure port (ie: we could drive to the port) and the huge variety of activities. We took the family - kids are 7 and 9 and they loved the SeaPlex and Adventure Ocean youth program. A little know fact is that they have an Escape room challenge game, but this is not advertised and has to be booked on-board. By the time I learned of this, it was completely full. Also, most of the "big" activities (North Star, iFly, and others) need to be booked online and fill quickly! Apparently there are sessions when the arcade games are free, but I didn't ever see this advertised. I was disappointment that the XBOX lounge had only 2 of 5 XBOXes working (2 were removed completely, 1 the controllers didn't work. We per-purchased the VOOM Internet package. I think I got %30 off. I was pleasantly surprised with the performance. It was fantastic. Dining was average. Also the swing at the front of the solarium was not there during my sailing. I don't know if it has been removed permanently or was out for maintenance or something. This was a little disappointing. Read Less

Ship is beautiful. Did not seem as large as I know it is. The 270 lounge was unbelieveable. Could sit and watch the special effects for hours. Thought there could have been some other kind of entertainment other than the special shows. I think the food in the dining room has lost that special pazazze that it used to have. More selections on the classic than on the nightly choices. No sherbet any more. Same ice cream every night. Same breads every night. I know this sounds picky but when you have cruised with a line for so long, you notice these things. Heard a passenger say, "I have always been faithful to Royal but the food has gone down hill so much I will cruise with someone else next time," Shops are too fancy for the average person. Maybe some can afford to pay for things in Cartier but not the average person you have aboard. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the size, age and amenities this ship provided and it did not let us down. While the port of departure was so cold, it did not permit us to enjoy much of the outdoor activities for the first day and a half at sea. This ensured that the indoor pool was remained pretty full during this time. We more than made up for the lost activity time at the first port of call in Port Canaveral. Since we are Floridians, we did not see a need to get off at that port and enjoyed a rather empty ship and were able to get on the Northerstar and bumper cars multiple times. I only wish they had a way to accommodate standby requests for the ifly skydiving. we notice that there were some instances where customers didn't show up for their scheduled appointments, we asked the instructor if we could fill a vacant spot, they said no, and that if a customer doesn't show up then that spot remains vacant. One has to wonder if the $25 no call no show fee has anything to do with this decision. Other than this, I can say that I was not disappointed and I would go again. Read Less

The ship is amazing and has something for everyone - this was our 2nd time on this ship we like it so much. The convenience of parking at Cape Liberty (vs. New York City or flying to another port) was tremendous. Boarding and disembarking was so easy. They treat suite guests very well. The two enclosed pool areas were AWESOME especially when staring at the wintry city outside - you could jump I the pool as soon as you got on board and it was ~20 degrees F outside. No flight = instant vacation. The bar service is great. Casino is fun (if a bit small). Shows were EXCELLENT. Special Suite dining experience was EXCELLENT. Doing Disney from the port is good - though we wish we had another hour or two. Bahamas and Florida were perfect weather in March. We're already thinking of going again next year for a 3rd time on this ship. Read Less

Absolutely terrific ship. There is so much to do on board, I ran out of time -- so make sure you book things like the Flowrider, North Star and Ripcord early on in the cruise. In my opinion, this is the perfect ship for ports that tend to be colder weather. Because it was nearly freezing in NJ in March, having the solarium completely indoors along with a second pool was phenomenal. The Seaplex is also great for cold days at it's always nice and toasty inside. My favorite thing about the ship, however, is the interior design. It's a totally new look that you can only find on Quantum Class and Harmony OTS and it's absolutely stunning. Can't wait to step on board another ship like this. My online complaint was that I was stuck with My Time Dining, which meant I ate at nearly 9PM every night. That being the case, I was late by 10 minutes one night (due to the formal night photo studios) and I was refused seating. Hoping that Royal will do something for me on my next cruise for that experience. Anyway, BOOK THIS SHIP. You won't regret it. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was only a 2 hour drive from our house. We were not as excited about the ports of call because we had already been to those destinations, but I knew that Anthem would have a lot of onboard activities for my two 'kids' who are 22 and 19. We took advantage of early booking and reserved North Star, the Puzzle/Escape Room, and iFly. We had a great Cruise Critic Roll Call lead (Jason) who organized a cabin crawl and slot pull. The ship had so many activities that we just didn't have time to take advantage of everything since we also just wanted to relax in the sun! We loved the Solarium especially when leaving Bayonne. It was 30 degrees outside, but we were sitting in the Solarium in our bathing suits and loved the fact that we were very warm while everyone else was freezing outside! We will definitely cruise with RCI again. We have been on their ships at least 6 times, but we have also cruised with Norwegian, Carnival, and Disney. We like RCI the best, but sometimes due to the itinerary or cost it has made more sense to go with other cruise lines. Read Less

The whole experience was exceptional. I highly recommend cruising on Royal Caribbean. The ship was exceptionally clean, cabins were exquisite and dinning - fabulous. I was very happy to get the Daily Planner the night before - this helped us organize our day and pick activities that were available. I'm glad we did not purchase the drinks package. The drinks on board are very reasonably priced - same as at high end restaurants onshore. You will not break even on the drinks package unless you drink 4 - 5 drinks a day - every day. Also, no need to purchase the soda package - there were plenty of drinks available with the basic price (coffee, tea, water, lemonade, apple juice and orange juice). And a can of soda was $2.25. How much soda will you drink every day? All in all - the staff is to be commended - they made our vacation unforgettable. The staff was extremely attentive and service phenomenal. We will definitely cruise again with Royal Caribbean. Read Less

This was our first cruise of this type and we were concerned about the size of the ship and how we might become "lost in the crowd." However, as huge as the ship is we settled in and had a wonderful "home" for the week. The room attendant was most helpful and warmly greeted us each day, wanting to know what we planned for the day and at the end of the day was excited to hear about our adventures. We had a room with the smaller balcony and found it totally adequate. Our dining experiences were great - we tried several of the restaurants and found all to be wonderful. We had "My Time" dining and thought we were limited to only the times for which we registered, but found out upon sailing that we could go to the dining room when open and get seated if there were available seats. We never had a problem getting seated. The ship was very clean and staff over the entire ship were very helpful and accommodating. Read Less

My Mom had business trip on this cruise and I can along! Amazing time, food was great and plenty. Staff was very kind and helpful. So much to do and see. Loved the Dog House, for their Coney Island hotdog. Windjammer always kept things fresh for selections of food. Something for everyone. I loved the Adult solarium. Nice and quiet, kid free, gorgeous views, and relaxing. The medical staff was very professional when we had to take my father to be seen. Due to the medical issue we had to miss our shore excursion and the Ship staff helped us to get reimbursed our cost. They have this Bionic Robot Bartender, it was cool to design my own drink and watch this Robot make it. Great to watch even if not ordering a drink. The Abyss, was intimidating at first, until I watched an 80 year old lady go down it and told me how much she loved. So I gave it a go, and I loved. Loved it so much going again on same ship next March. Read Less

Believe the negative reviews. I have been cruising for over 20 years. I have been on bigger ships and smaller ships. Booked this cruise as a last minute getaway and wish I would not have. This ship needs to be dry docked and majorly refurbished. The only thing I can say positive is that the ship staff are all great. The only reason I didn't give this trip a terrible rating and just a poor. I feel bad that they have to work on a ship that gets so much bad press. Our stateroom beds were uncomfortable. The pillows were flat like pancakes.....I had to stack bathroom towels under my pillows. Our bathrooms had clogged drains and overflowed into the carpeted stateroom. Carpet throughout the entire ship is old and stained. Flickering electricity throughout the ship. I'm not one to overly criticize cruise ship food. I don't go with high expectations because of the mass quantity that they have to prepare. With that said, I would say the food on Carnival ships are way better. I understand that weather is beyond anyone's control....we had horrible winds...that was unfortunate. With as much money that this company makes it would be nice if they built a dock at their private island, coco cay. Our private island stop got cancelled because the winds/waves made it too dangerous to run the tender boats. Read Less

Decided to take my daughter on a 3 day cruise for her 16th birthday and she had never cruised before. I've never done short cruises but cruising is fun even if it is short. This was too short. It was too short because we only had one half day of good weather. As fate would have it, the weather was cloudy, cool, overcast and windy. It is no ones fault about the weather but if this had been a 7 day cruise the weather would've eventually gotten better and been rather enjoyable. Our first stop in Nassau on Sat . after being tossed around in the ocean overnite, was a welcome site. But our enthusiasm was quickly tempered by the comments from the captain. He announced that the weather in Nassau was going to be 70 , over cast and 50 mph gale force winds. UGH! It was miserable. I noticed no one on the beaches and with 4 other boats in port what were all the people going to do? The captain decided that based on the weather forecast for Sun , as this system was going to go away that the stop at Coco Cay was canceled and we would be staying in Nassau overnite and have a sea day. I predicted it because I've had tendered stops canceled before due to rough seas. Nothing you can do but make the best of the situation. The weather did clear up and winds die down the last day to enjoy the sun and try to enjoy the last day of a cruise. Several things that this cruise disappointed was there seemed to be a lack of workers. I've been on small carnival ships and there are always attendants wiping down railings and picking up trash off tables. I swa some tables remain dirty for long time. The food was just OK and redundant at the Windjammer where lunch and breakfast served. The food in dining room was better and witht he wait staff it makes up for the lack of food quality. Overall the food was good and no real big complaints. The pizza was good and never had to wait too long even though lines got long. The ship offered good shows and plenty of entertainment. The average age of this cruise is quite younger than used to cruise. Lots of 20's and singles and not many older people. The cabin was a tiny inside cabin on deck 2 and we squeezed 3 in it and would have been a drawback if it had been a longer cruise. But who really stays in the cabin on a cruise other than to sleep and change clothes. For the price I chose the inside for this cruise. Next cruise it might be a balcony again. Read Less

FYI I have sailed Royal Caribbean and many other ships, Carnival, NCL, Celebrity in the past. I had no idea RC had such horrible ships in existence. Room was too small, I had to crawl over my husband to get out of bed. NO SAFE as promised. After going to the desk 5 times because they said they will install one, they finally said "don't have enough safes" Closet so small, no shelves, my husband had to dress out of his suit case, kept under the bed because of no room to walk around . The fluorescent light by our tiny desk kept flickering on when turned off, through the night. Could use this ship to torture people. The toilet flushed black soot. Food was ordinary at best. My suggestion to my family? be very careful when booking RC, be sure and check date built. . Read Less

While we were sitting on the deck waiting for our room, I noticed a dirty wet napkin laying on the floor. Everything else was very good including the dining room food & service, (some of the desserts were bland), efficient cabin steward, cabin (deck 9) was large & clean & quiet, plenty of entertainment & activities, excursions. They did a good job of getting 2000+ passengers through the lines on port days. Walking around Nassau was okay for shopping. Beyond that it was noisy & dirty. The excursion to Atlantis was great! The private island, Coco Cay was beautiful & relaxing. We didn't rent the pricey snorkeling equipment, but could see fish & stingray by just walking out in the clear, smooth water. Will go again on other RCL cruises. Read Less

Relatively cheap and chance to go to Key West and Bahamas. However, other than Key West, destinations were atrocious. The one in the Bahamas we were looking forward to was Coco Bay but this was cancelled by the captain because he thought the waves might be too high. Instead, we went to Freeport. What a waste. You need to pay $30 for a cab to go to a market and there is nothing else to see or do. You dock at an industrial port, the ugliest I have ever seen. The ship is small and 16 years old and shows it. Rooms are tiny and there are no balconies except in the ridiculously expensive suites. Plus ours had pull-down beds on each side that made it even more cramped and posed a risk for hitting your head when you got out of bed. Food was mediocre at best. Service, the crew and the shows were good but there were not enough seats in the theater! Read Less

Not many choices for Gluten Free foods same choices in every menu all week long in Dining rooms. Would not cruise this ship again we have always cruised on the Freedom.Radiance, and Allure classes. Cabins very small you would have thought for a recent 5 year rehab they could have considered increasing the size of interior cabins. And putting some extra insulation for noise suppression for the cabins under the Royal Theater are. Music going on past 11:00 pm never had a good night sleep the whole week. The Empress of the Seas is an old ship and shows its age. Food in both the casual buffet and formal dining is mediocre at best. Service at the formal dining leaves much to be desired. The first night the assistant waiter, who is responsible for drink orders, brought our drinks after we had finished our entrees. He was replaced the second and subsequent nights with someone who was far more capable and attentive. Service at the bars is a time-consuming affair, with us frequently waiting 15-20 minutes just to get service. In general, with a few exceptions of outstanding service (namely the cabin attendant), most of the staff gives you the feeling you are more of a bother than a guest. If you are looking for good service and good food, I would recommend looking to other cruise lines like Celebrity or Disney (depending on whether or not you are traveling with children). Read Less

I chose this cruise because I wanted to sail on these specific dates on a 5 day cruise. It also seemed to be good value for the price. I was aware it was the smallest ship, had a small pool and would not have so much to offer as the larger ships. I had also read the reviews but I was prepared to go with an open mind. Boarding was efficient and in no time I had found our Oceanview Stateroom port side front of ship. I had prebooked My Time Dining in the Starlight Dining Room. Whenever we visited we were always seated within a few minutes of arriving. The staff were welcoming, efficient and eager to please, The restaurant manager always came to check that we had enjoyed our meal and were happy with the service. At the Windjammer lunch buffet there was always a member of staff on duty ensuring everyone sanitised their hands before entering. Plenty of choices available for lunch available until 2.45pm. Staff again were attentive and eager to please. They are well worth the gratuity that is added to the bill, are not well paid and are far away from their families in the Phillippines, Indonesia and India...to name but a few. The Cruise Director does a great job keeping everyone aware of events taking place daily. We enjoyed the Royal Caribbean Singers and Dancers excellent performance. Some of the daytime activities a but cringey...but you do not have to join in. On sail day the sunbeds were all taken but there is always somewhere to sit such as deck 6 for some peace and quiet or to go for a walk or jog around the ship. We used the gym a couple of times too to help lose some calories after eating far too much! Remember you are not alone when visiting the shore as there is always a larger ship docking after you and lots of visitors arriving at the same time. The Hopon.Hopoff excursion offered on arrival in Miami is worth it if you have never been to Miami and have a late flight departure. Your hold and hand baggage is tagged and taken to storage and is awaiting you when your bus drops you off in Miami Airport. The Red Tour around the Art Deco area in South Beach was enjoyable. So if you have never been on a cruise go for it. If you cruise a lot on the larger ships then this one is not for you... Read Less
