My husband has cruised on Princess once before (about 12 years ago) and he really wanted to go with them again. I wanted to be able to drive to the departure port so we chose a 7-day California Coastal, round trip from LA. It was just the two of us ages 45 and 46. Left the kids at home since they don't appreciate cruising (which is fine with me as it's much cheaper that way!). After reading many reviews on the aft balconies, I chose cabin B754 which we loved. We did get some movement when we were out at sea but we found it soothing. I chose Baja deck so we would be neither above or below any public areas and it was nice and quiet. Sometimes we did hear "ship sounds" but nothing that was ever a problem. The cabin was adequate and the balcony was larger than I expected, which was a nice surprise. It had two chairs and a small table. We didn't use it for dining or anything- just sat in the chairs (or more frequently, stood at the railing) and enjoyed the ocean. The shower is miniscule! I understand this is the norm on Princess. We were scheduled to visit San Francisco, Monterey, San Diego, and Ensenada. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit Monterey because the seas were a bit too rough, making tendering unsafe. Too bad able that as that was the port I was most interested in. We left Monterey that morning, spent the night and part of the next morning at Sea, and docked in San Diego half a day early (noon) so we actually overnighted in SD. Overall I loved the ship and the decor (classy- the Piazza I thought was beautiful) although the constant art displays that took up all of Explorer's Lounge on several occasions was a bit much. Does anyone buy art on a cruise? I guess they must or the ships wouldn't keep devoting that much time and space and effort to it. Buffet food was not very flavorful IMO but we very much enjoyed the MDR three nights and chose to try Crown Grill and SHARE on two other nights. Overall very good. SHARE is a more adventurous menu and I loved the decor but it's high up aft and there was a constant vibration and an intermittent high pitched rattle/squeak in the ceiling that really detracted from the experience. Hope they get it fixed soon. Didn't care for the Main Offenders band or the Magic to Do production show but AJ Jamal (guest comedian) was pretty good... especially his bit about the showers on board! All staff with the exception of the young lady in the soft serve ice cream area were friendly. All in all, we were very pleased and we are already looking at another Princess cruise, hopefully to Hawaii this time. Read Less

The whole trip was great except for we could not port in Monterey because the seas were too choppy for the tenders to come pick us up. But that was OK because we got two days in San Diego. The cruise director and his staff are fantastic. Everybody is very nice and the ship was very clean. The food in the dining room was really good. The buffet had most of the same things each night so I prefer the dining room. I just want to say that everybody was very nice and they were always cleaning and just super friendly. I felt very very safe on the Ruby Princess. The entertainment and the game shows were all fantastic. The bar staff was great and the photographers were unbelievable. Very very friendly and other than the normal poses they were very lenient on letting you do what you wanted to do. Pictures turned out great Read Less

DW & I just returned from a great 7 Day California Coastal Cruise on the Ruby Princess. This was our 20th overall cruise and 13th in a row on Princess. This was also our third time on the Ruby albeit the last time was 2011. Even though we only live 92 miles away from the cruise terminal, we did a two night pre-cruise stay at the Hilton Doubletree in San Pedro. For the two days we just hung out and got more motivated for the cruise. The night before embarkation, we joined several other roll call members in dining at a wonderful nearby restaurant called "22nd Street Landing." As far as the Hilton DoubleTree goes, I would highly recommend it for anyone thinking of a pre-cruise stay for a cruise out of San Pedro. The hotel also offers a free shuttle to the cruise terminal which is a relatively short distance from the hotel. On embarkation day, we arrived around 1130 and were onboard rather quickly. Prior to boarding, I had read that cabins would not be ready until 1300. I am here to say that, at least on the Ruby, this policy was followed to the letter. With this in mind, we hung out in some comfy chairs outside of the Explorers Lounge. At exactly 1300 the deck access doors, off the elevators, opened and passengers were allowed access to their cabins. For this voyage we had a Vista Suite (E733) on the aft portion of the ship. Having a "Wake View" balcony is a must for me and I always try and book one. We''ve had Vista Suites in the past so I was very familiar with the cabin layout. Our cabin Steward "Renato" from the Philippines, was fantastic. He always had a smile on his face and did everything imaginable to make our stay in the cabin enjoyable. He is definitely an asset to the line. As far as the Ruby goes this was, as stated earlier, our third time sailing on her. While I was familiar with the layout, some of the changes since 2011 made her seem a little new to me. A couple of observations include the addition of the Salty Dog Gastro Pub to a portion of the Wheelhouse Bar. We dined there one night and I enjoyed it. The Salty Dog Grill (formerly Trident Grill) was great place to grab a burger or hotdog. For a small fee, they also offered the "Ernesto Burger" with or without a beer (+Beer option $3.00 more). Prego's Pizza is now called "Slices" and is joined with the old "Scopes" Ice Cream bar which is now called "Coffee & Cones."The regular Pizza offerings at Slices are augmented by some small offerings (bread based). I'm sorry, but I do not remember what they were as I did not try one. Here goes regarding the subjective area of food (dining). For dining, we had Club Class. We dined there three out of the seven nights on the ship. The added perk for CC on the Ruby was the Head Waiter personally cooked a pasta based dish that was offered as a starter, appetizer, or main course. We enjoyed all meals in Club Class. The service was very good as well. We had our suite perk embarkation night dinner in the Crown Grill. Both DW and I had the filet that was tasty and cooked to order. The service overall was very good. During dinner, I also enjoyed a nice bottle of Italian wine. The buffet on the Ruby is still called the Horizon Court. The food offerings were as expected and were at times a little repetitive, especially for breakfast. Food temps for hot dishes could have been a little warmer for my tastes. The Cab Shack was offered on two nights. I unfortunately did not attend. For breakfast each day, we enjoyed our suite perk of breakfast in the Crown Grill. On the Ruby & Emerald, Sabatini's was replaced with Share hence having the Suite Breakfast in the Crown Grill. Food and service was outstanding. As far as dinner in Share, I cannot comment as I did not dine there. I can't comment on any of the shows as I did not attend any offerings in the Princess Theater. Since this was a shorter cruise, I also didn't take time out to watch any movies on MUTS. I did kick back one night and enjoyed piano music in Crooners. As far as shore excursions go, we just walked around in San Francisco. We were not allowed to tender in Monterey due to high winds/strong seas. In San Diego, we took a delightful two hour harbor cruise (non Princess based) that was quite enjoyable. We did not get off the ship in Ensenada. A few more observations of the. It seems that Princess no longer provides corsages and boutonnières for suite passengers on the first formal night (not sure if this has been reported in the past). The passenger services desk no longer has roped off lines. Probably the best improvement that Princess made, in my personal opinion, deals with the with their menu of offered beers. The menu is now greatly expanded with more offerings than in the past. In closing, I'd have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this cruise. Next up, is a T/A on the new Sky Princess in November. Princess, at least for me, continues to provide a great experience for a competitive price. Sure there are some hiccups every now and then but overall it remains my line of choice for the foreseeable future. Read Less

We wanted a shorter trip and this one fit the bill. A day and a half at sea, 24 hours in a warm port (Cabo San Lucas), and another day and a half to get home. The Ruby is spacious and well maintained. She is just in the process of switching over to Princess's Medallion system. Right now, all you can do is wave you cruise card at the medallion reader outside the cabin door. The food was delicious as usual. I appreciate that, besides the daily menu, that Princess had favorites that are available every day. Pizza was up to snuff (after a dip in quality as reported on Cruise Critic a year ago). The burger grille by the pool is the only weak link. Bar service was prompt and the drinks were strong and tasty. We liked the Walker-Black band and it was nice to see them again after sharing the Emerald with them last July. My daughter (23) fell in love with at guitarist singer, Mary {something} who made my daughter come to enjoy classic rock. I am sold on Princess and have my next Princess cruise booked for a year from now (too far away!). Next up, though, is a turn to the dark-side as I go on reunion cruise on another line with an alumni group that I belong to next September. I don't want to cast aspersions, but it will be a carnival on that cruise. Read Less

Went to hotel California And whale watching. Because I went by myself I did things by myself That the group didnt wanna do. Like staying at EFFE's jewelry For the big drawing of the diamond earrings. I stayed and I won the diamond earrings. Yahoo!!! I want the 1st day and had my hair done and it had several other appointments made for different spa treatments. Probably bought more products and I should have but I like them and I'm having fun with them. Met Dimitris Vrahnoss In the Fitness Room. What an asset to the princess Cruise lines. What a great spirit very knowledgeable of his background And the programs that he taught. Plus what a great smile. Read Less

We choose this cruise to see the whales again and we really had a great experience with the whales. We also had never been to Honolulu, Hilo or Kauia. We enjoyed the tour of the Memorial and Mighty Mo. Not so crazy about Hilo - my suggestion would be to book the tour that goes to the National Park. We waited too long to book and tour was full. The tour of Kauai was crazy. Our guide talked and sang the whole time. It was not relaxing. Our tour in Ensanada was the funniest. We got dusty and muddy but felt like kids again. We are in our 70s. We drove a four wheeler through the winery and enjoyed it so much. Saw animals and tasted the wine. Ride to and return from the winery was informative as well. Our cabin attendant, Jim was the best we have ever had and this was our seventh cruise with Princess. The staff was over the top friendly and helpful. Our favorite was Amel from Montenegro. Bartender at Adiago from 6p to 7p. Charles was great too. Our server at Club Dining was Olena from the Ukraine. To many to mention. Food at Share was great. Jose Luis and Daniel took great care of us. Crown Grlll - Gerry was our server from the Philippines. He loves music. George, the room manager at Crown Grill took great care of us. We hated the buffet as it was too crowded and we could never find a place to sit. We were in cabin R401 which was VERY NOISY starting at 4:30 in the morning. Plus when u sit on the balcony u here the music from above. Trip over the seas were roughj. Trip back we barely recognized being on the ship. Seas were very calm. Fitness center ok. We found the staff rude. U can not use the treadmills before 8AM or after 8PM. Supposedly rooms below the treadmills which is stupid. We enjoyed the spa. Enjoyed the lectures given by a Naturalist. Enjoyed the lectures give by a person who talks about comedians. Did not see any shows because no seats available for early shows. Princess should have matinees for their shows. Plus they should have hosts to find seats for people in the buffet. Getting on and off the ship was a breeze. Read Less

We wanted to experience Hawaii without long cramped flights. We knew princess cruises are well done and thought it would be a great alternative. It was! As expected, the service on Princess is outstanding. The crew has a culture of helpful friendliness. Our cabin Steward (Sahu), waiter (Sretten) and assistant waiter (Tek) were all outstanding. Duke, our cruise director, has a wonderful sense of humor and was the most accessible cruise director we've had in a while. On board evening entertainment was first rate (afternoons a bit sparse). Meals and cabin (club class mini-suite) were as good as we have come to expect from Princess. Got a chance to see the 4 major Hawaiian islands. Great exposure to the best of each. The stop in Ensenada checked the box to become an international cruise. We took an independent helicopter ride on the big island that was well worth it. We had enough time after to explore on the hop on hop off bus. Oahu was the mandatory pilgrimage to Pearl Harbor for the fist time in Hawaii. Moving, as it should be. Kauai was a tour to Waimea Canyon and the Fern Grotto. Amazing scenery. Well run excursion. On Maui, we took and Uber to Kaanipali Beach. Beautiful! In Ensenada, we took a shore excursion to a former casino and a former winery. The tour guide spoke broken English and did not get the group together before speaking. Could have been better. Overall, great trip. Read Less

This was a pleasant cruise that went smoothly and no major problems. The embarkation and the disembarkation was the smoothest EVER. Cabin was nice but I would look to upgrade for more room. Dining and Cabin staff were excellent. Entertainment was good but could not get into some of the Theater early shows. Activities were excellent. Service personnel were friendly and effect. Honolulu was a port that had lots to offer. One day was not a lot of time to see things. The other ports could have used an extra hour or two but it was acceptable. LA was an excellent city to explore before the cruise. We took a city tour before the trip and went to Santa Monica Pier after the cruise. Getting to the departure city a day before would be HIGHLY recommended. Many tours are available in LA. I will definitely be going on another Princess cruise. Read Less

We live in the Pacific NW and a quick trip down to LA and then to Mexico sounded like the perfect antidote to winter. We really enjoyed our cruise on the Emerald and except for a few small issues had an absolutely perfect time. Th e only issues we had is that the lock on our stateroom ran out of battery power, which took about an hour to fix. The other issue is that our experience in Matzalan wasn't everything it could have been - the "City Highlights tour" that we took we would not recommend as the city highlights seemed to include mostly street vendors who could be somewhat aggressive. We had an amazing time in Puerto Vallarata where our snorkling trip turned into a whale watching expedition as they seemed to be everywhere in the bay. Our special thanks to the crew of Emerald who went out of their way to look after us, make sure we got gluten free food, and in general made us feel like part of their families. We highly recommend this cruise, this ship and this line. Read Less

We chose the 4 day California Coast cruise to extend our 10 day Sea of Cortez cruise. Embarkation went smoothly and we were on the ship within an hour of arrival at the port. I had a few misgivings after our fall 28 day trip on the Emerald Princes but the Ruby is so much nicer and the food so much better. The ship is beautiful and well maintained. Service was good but the best part for us was our cabin, Aloha 304, an accessible cabin with balcony. It is large with a huge bathroom equipped for someone like my husband who needs grab bars and no step up from the room to the bathroom. We probably spent more time in our cabin than we usually do on a cruise, enjoying the space and the view from the sliding door as we headed down the coast keeping the mountainous profile of the Baja in sight. Our waiters were attentive and very helpful to my mobility challenged husband. We enjoyed every meal as well as the big production shows but had trouble hearing and understanding the comedians. At Cabo San Lucas we took our only shore excursion, Princess whale watching excursion. Did we see whales? Oh my, yes. Jumping, tail slapping and generally cavorting about. There were so many whales we could even see them from the ship! At the other ports I got off and explored on foot while my husband stayed on board. All in all it was a lovely cruise and a good experience. There were few children onboard and we would definitely cruise on the Ruby Princess again except that his doctor says my husband, at age 92, needs to stop traveling. We have been to 77 countries and 35+ cruises. Read Less

Embarkation/ Debarktion was great and we were on and off the ship and through the terminal both times in 30 min or less. The crew was great, the food in MDR was great, buffet was good but it is a buffet so don’t expect 5 star food. Room steward was wonderful and very on top of things. We love MUTS and we watched Bohemian Rhapsody on this cruise which was great on that screen and with the sound. We took my wife’s parent on this trip and it was there first cruise and all they could do was rave about the ship and the quality. As soon as we got back they started talking about booking more cruises immediately. We had a wonderful time! Good value, right length, many sea days. We had a wonderful time. Minor complaints are that a coffee card is fixed price, and no longer able to be carried forward to Future cruises. It does not make sense to spend $31 dollars for a coffee card on a five day cruise when you cannot carry it forward. They either need to allow you to carry it forward, or sell it at discount for a short cruise. The TV seems locked into "video tape" mode in our cabin, and there was no way to change it. This should be remedied. Despite these shortcomings, we still had a wonderful time. Excellent service from everyone on board. Great embarkation, great debarkation, wonderful service in the dining room and from our cabin steward. Cruise director Natalie was always upbeat and made the voyage a real pleasure. Food was excellent, we will travel with Princess again. Read Less

We actually took this cruise because our good friends wanted to go to Hawaii and they like sea days. I'd read previous reviews , most of which were negative. Everyone was complaining about the condition of the Emerald Princess and how poor the staff were and bad food on board. WELL, I want to tell you they are all wrong!! The ship is due for a referb but it's by no means shabby. Everything was clean and shiny and everyone we came in contact with was OUTSTANDING! We'd never encountered a more service oriented or happy crew in all capacities and this was our 27th cruise. The quality of the food was EXCELLENT. The menus were imaginative and delicious and the Michelangelo Dining Room staff was top rate! Our waiter and his assistant (Lito and Jeffrey) were delightful and made our dining experience memorable every evening. Their Manager Alexander was so interested in how we were enjoying our meals. The cabin steward (Marlon) was pleasant and efficient and our balcony cabin was extremely comfortable. During the entire cruise we were contending with a big storm out of the North and our wonderful Captain Todd made it into all our appointed ports where others cancelled days ahead. He made a decision to stay safely in port in Hilo as the winds and waves were gale force that night. Everyone certainly appreciated that decision!. We had a Valentine's Day surprise where the Captain renewed our vows and presented us with a lovely certificate signed by him! Sorry this is so lengthy but I wanted to put a positive word in for this lovely older ship and her amazing crew. Read Less

I always wanted to go to Hawaii and figured this would be a good taste. Really enjoyed the trip except for the pouring rain on embarkation and the storm that followed us all the way home. The temps were lower than expected. Temp in Ensenada Mexico was only 52 and was very windy on the ship with temps being only low 60,s most of the time. Most people packed for Caribbean weather and it was low 70's. The crew was friendly and accommodating. They provided a sharps container and an extension cord for CPAPs and distilled water. Our excursions were good. Loved the Pineapple plantation and the Pearl Harbor tour and visiting Volcano National Park. Was not always impressed with the extras they added to the excursion like the orchid tour. Not impressed with the plantation tour with the train ride. Feeding the animals was throwing bread to a bunch of pigs. On board Sharon Faff, the naturalist, had so much interesting information it was overwhelming. We went to assigned dining and enjoyed having the same waiters. The food was excellent. Actually I thought the food and service at the the dining room was as good as the Crown Grill and Share. The only thing they give you is ambiance and a little slower pace. On the sea days they had sea crafts, ukulele lessons, spanish lessons, trivia, bingo, etc. Enough to keep one busy. Read Less

It was an easy cruise to get to since we live in Arizona. We just wanted to get away on a cruise where we could just relax so we looked forward to the sea days. Plus we love the Hawaiian Islands so we always look forward to going back there. The entertainment was outstanding. We felt the entertainers were the best combination we have ever had on a cruise. Our room steward (Enrico), dining room waiter (Jack) and junior waiter (Edmund) were fantastic and rank with the best we ever have had serve us. The embarkation was the one negative point on the cruise. With a major raistorm on the embarkation day, the port was totally unprepared. You had to wait in a downpour of rain in a line outside of the tent for over an hour to drop off your luggage. Then you had to wait outside of another tent in the rain for another 45 minutes before you could get into the security tent. The City of Los Angeles should be totally embarrassed that this terminal is totally inadequate to handle a foul weather situation. Many people had the clothes in their suitcases totally soaked from the rain. Several people had clothes ruined from being soaked (like leather jackets). Now back to a positive. The food in the dining room would rank with the best we ever have had. The Chef did an excellent job of having a diverse menu and didn't repeat dishes on a 15 cruise. Take away the issue on embarking, it was a great cruise, Read Less

There was a varied schedule of events that were always well led and free. The International Cafe was open 24 hours a day with various delicious snacks and sandwiches. We made all our ports despite the bad weather and the only ship cruising Hawaii to do so that week. The computer lab was well staffed and the guys were helpful and patient. What an amazing experience we had! Embarkation – We drove to San Pedro from Phoenix. Started out around 0330, a couple of gas and restroom stops along the way. We did not have a hard time finding parking at all. We parked right across the terminal building. We got there around 0930, sat inside the terminal and waited until about 1030, when they started processing passengers. The staff were very helpful and after about 30 minutes, we were onboard this magnificent vessel! The cabins weren’t ready yet, so we went to the International Café to eat, and soon after went to the Lido deck to check out the buffet. We also went to look for our Muster Station. At 1300, an announcement was made that the cabins were ready. We headed to our cabin, put up my door decorations, then after about 10 minutes, our luggage arrived. Cabin: The room was bigger than I thought it would be. Our Oceanview was unobstructed, so we were able to look out our big window and that was so awesome! The bed was comfy, and our Steward Johnny M. was absolutely amazing! He accommodated my requests throughout our stay and always greeted us with a smile. We requested for 2 robes and got them, too. I would definitely recommend bringing an air freshener, though, because there’s no vent in the bathroom. Food: I really don’t understand all the negative reviews about the food here! They were all excellent. We dined at the Horizon court, Salty Dog grill, Slices, Michaelangelo, and Da Vinci. We opted for Anytime Dining, but never waited more than 5-10 minutes for a table. True, sometimes we shared a table with others cause the wait line for tables for 2 were about a 20 minute wait and we were in a hurry to watch a show. Well one night, we enjoyed the company of our tablemates that we didn’t even make it to our show. It was so fun to get to meet others. Their selections were excellent, and I often found myself ordering two appetizers and two dinner plates, which hubby and I shared. The desserts were also great, not too sweet. Our servers were amazing as well – Noni G., Ferdie A., Samuel E., Roy, and a slew of other great staff. The receptionists always smiled upon greeting all the guests. Horizon court – you usually have to walk through to find an open table, but so many others were willing to share their table with us, and we did the same when we had extra seats. I had asked for a special fish sauce and staff got it for me two times from their own staff kitchen. We did not do any Specialty Dining, nor order any specialty or alcoholic drinks. The only thing we spent money for was Gelato, and that was $1.50 for three scoops (oh, and a souvenir magnet). Now where can you go and find gelato for that price? Also, the coffee and specialty coffee they had like fraps, mocha, etc, the prices were not that expensive. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised at how low they were priced. They looked really yummy. We didn’t order them, though, because I’ve always been fine with just water and the occasional iced tea (which was good, too). On our last day, we ordered lemonade and regret not doing that earlier during our cruise because the lemonade was very good! Shows: We watched almost all of their shows, except for the country shows. We attended both auditions for The Voice of the Ocean, and that was a lot of fun! Yes, get there about 20 minutes early to get good seats, just like you would at any other show. The Cruise Director and her staff really put on good shows. Activities: We didn’t travel with children, but we signed up for Discovery @ Sea Planetarium, and that was a good experience. Sign up early so you don’t run out of the limited space. The times to sign up will be on the Patter. We also attended a Stargazing session, and it was amazing! We went to the very top of the ship and got a lecture about the solar system. Movies Under The Stars: This was my absolute favorite! All the movies shown were fairly new. Heck, I even went even though I’ve seen the movie! Staff was going around offering pizza. There were flannel blankets to keep you warm. Excursions: At Cabo, we booked the pirate ship snorkel excursion. That was great, too. Their excursions are very well organized. We got tickets to all 3 excursions on our first night. It told us where to meet, what time, and any special instructions like clothes to wear or bring. At Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, we did the city highlights tour. I thought it was a great way to see Mexico. Lots of art. I would say that the only bad thing was the street vendors trying to sell you their goods, but that is expected of all tourist spots. Disembarkation: We set out our luggage on the last night. We got a newsletter that told us where to go at a particular time. That went smoothly as well! I can hardly wait for our next cruise on the Ruby! I am a fan, and I know you will be, too. Read Less

Excellent costumer service, great entertainment, friendly personnel, nice facilities and a lot of more good things to say... I had a lot of fun at the onboard activities, every day I enjoyed the performance of the mariachi band “Los 3 Brillantes” & the Walker Black Duo at night, and they were amazing. “Los 3 Brillantes” played many of puertorrican popular songs; they made me feel at home. Every time that Mario Lee Gonzalez saw me around welcomed me saying: 'La Boricua" or "Puerto Rico" that made me feels really special. Walker Black Duo played all our songs requested and I was surprised when I hear James Dulin playing and singing "Oye Como Va" a Spanish song it was impressive, this gentleman play the guitar just like Santana, also he used Spanish phrases while he was performing other days that was a plus and Angela delight us with her beautiful voice and grace. Angelo our room attendant kept our room impeccable all the time and our favorite waiter was Jose Lezama during the day and at night was Leidi Cuesta they were simply amazing. These vacations were absolutely unforgettable; thanks to the entire Princess Cruises crew for making it so memorable. Read Less

Background We are Darren and Cindy in our late 40’s and early 50’s from Great Falls, Montana. We have been on 8 cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and a California Pacific Coastal. We began looking for cruises in the late fall of 2018 for January 2019. Montana can be very cold and dark in the winter months and late January was an ideal week for us to travel in 2019. We were pretty set on this last week in January yet decided to wait until after the “final payment” date to seriously consider a cruise. In early December we narrowed it down to a couple of “last minute” options. The deals were pretty good for a 7-night Caribbean cruise with a variety of companies, but the airfare per person from Montana to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, FL was going to be more than the cruise. OUCH!! We generally prefer Celebrity Cruises, yet we also were considering a Mexican Riviera cruise with Princess since the price of the cruise was excellent and the airfare was going to be less than A THIRD of the cost to fly to LAX compared to Florida ports. Eventually about December 17 we committed to the January 26 Ruby Princess. The “Drop and Go” deal was the lowest price we have EVER paid for a balcony stateroom cruise (no perks included). We purchased a “Balcony Guarantee”, made our airline reservations, and a pre-cruise night at the Hilton LAX the same day. This was our third cruise with Princess. In the past we have always had a good experience with them. Admittedly, when booking a “guarantee” cabin, you need to be prepared to be satisfied with the worst cabin in your category. For us, the worst possible balcony cabins would have been a cabin under the fitness center/treadmills or a cabin with the balcony just above or near a smoking section. About two weeks later, we were assigned R-504, a perfectly acceptable balcony stateroom mid-ship. Goals: For us, the goal for the cruise was a week of sun, warmth, and relaxation with good food and wine in a casual (yet upscale) environment. We made a couple of decisions pre-cruise which would help us with this goal. 1. We like Good Food. On our past Princess cruises, the food in one of the Main Dining Room was always fine considering the amount of people the main dining rooms must feed within a couple of hour period. With some of the money we saved flying to LAX as opposed to Florida we chose to reserve EVERY evening in the Specialty Restaurants (Share and Crown Grill) on the ship which we could do for about $200 per person. 2. We like Good Wine. Each stateroom can carry on 2 bottles of wine per stateroom for in room/balcony consumption. For us, we considered the $15 corkage fee Princess charges for guests to bring additional wine on board to drink in the dining rooms/restaurants to be a VERY GOOD DEAL. 3. We planned to book the Thermal Suite in the spa for the entire cruise. We had purchased it on one of our Princess Cruises in the past and were very happy with it. Pre Cruise and Embarkation We flew from Great Falls, MT to LAX via Seattle on Alaskan Airlines. We left Great Falls in a blizzard but landed on time in Seattle then onto LAX on time as well. We stayed the night before at the Hilton LAX and were pleased with the room and hotel. The Hilton ended up being a good hotel for us since it offered a variety of light dining options for Friday night. Since it was warm on Saturday morning and since check out was not until 12:00 noon, we spent some time by the pool in the morning, then arranged a ride to the San Pedro Cruise Terminal. We shopped at Purdy’s wine/liquor just a block away from the Hilton. We bought and carried on 6 bottles of wine 3 white and 3 red and paid the corkage fees. For us this was a good deal since the wines were about $20 each and corkage was $15. The wines would have easily been $80-100 on the ship. We left the Hilton about 11:00am on Saturday and were at the pier by 11:30. We checked our luggage outside. Check in at the desk was easy and trouble free. In fact, at 11:45 there was not a single person in line. We boarded the ship shortly after we arrived. Our room was ready at 1:00pm. Our luggage arrived shortly after. Stateroom R-504 R-504 is near the mid-ship elevators and under the pool deck. Actually, it is immediately under a dining area for the pizza, ice cream station. The room was very clean and updated from the recent dry dock. There was new carpet, TV, mattress, etc in the room. There was some significant noise from the pool deck (table area) all day long. In general, it did not bother us too much and we got used to the noise. If we were to ever book a cruise on Ruby again and choose our room, we would never choose R504, yet for the “balcony guarantee” and the price, we were satisfied with the room. Storage space – plenty of storage space for us and our stuff Bed – We both found the bed very comfortable Staff – Our Room Steward (Glen) was very pleasant and kept our room well stocked and spotless. The room staff work hard, and we appreciated their work. Food Share by Curtis Stone – We booked reservations before the cruise on night 1, 3, 5, and 7 at Share. While the menu is somewhat limited, we consider this the best Restaurant on the ship. The service was exceptional and would highly recommend it to others. We never found Share to be crowded and wondered by more people do not book this restaurant. Crown Grill - We made advance reservations for night 2 and 4 (which ended up being nights 2 and 6) at the Crown Grill. We think the Crown is a step up from the Main Dining Room and the steaks (or seafood) good. International Café – We had a coffee card from our last cruise and the coffee and tea selections at the Café were again excellent – For us, the coffee package is worth it. The sugar-free deserts at the Café were also excellent. Buffet – We rarely ate in the buffet Chef’s Table – We were invited to dine at the Chef’s table Spa/Thermal Suite Once on board, we purchased the Thermal Suite pass at the Spa for the entire cruise. For us, the cost of the suite is well worth it for its heated tiled lounges, multiple steam rooms, and relaxation area. Sanctuary - We booked the sanctuary area for most afternoon's of the cruise and found it a wonderful and quiet place to relax Read Less

The ship and the itinerary were just what my wife and I wanted. We arrived a day early so we could poke around the shops/restaurants in Long Beach. Transfer to the ship was very easy. Our cabin was midship in case of stormy weather. We had a balcony and we spent quite a bit of time there watching the sea. Princess has equipped the rooms with new beds which slept very well. The ship has just returned to service after "freshening up" . Everything looked virtually new. Our first night out, we had dinner in the dining room and frankly, the food was mediocre and the service poor. Both the food plus the table service got better. We elected to visit some of the Premium dining and those were of very high quality.(I had a great Ribeye) We also picked one shore excursion in each port. In Cabo San Lucas we took the trip to Todos Santos which is about an hour inland. This town also has the famous Hotel California mentioned by the Eagles and where we had lunch. It was nice to get away from the port and there were far fewer people on the tour which made it more enjoyable. The weather was very nice at all of our destinations. (75 to 85 degrees) Mazatlan came the next day and our excursion was downtown on Segways. (very easy to learn to manuever) On Wed our final tour in Puerto Vallarta was whale watching from a high speed Zodiac. The guide was knowledgeable and we saw many Humpback whales. The Zodiac was much faster than the other boats which allowed us to cover lots of ocean in a short amount of time. Following Puerto Vallarta, we had 2 days at sea . We got lots of pool time and the food was much better than the start of the cruise. Disembarkation/ Customs was a snap and we got to LAX with hours to spare for our flight. We would definitely go back. It was so nice to wear shorts and sandals for a few days. Read Less

We took advantage of the drop and go special. Great value and relaxing itinerary. The art auction was the only disappointment. They really like to push 2, maybe 3 specific artists and don’t offer much variety beyond that even when guests request others for auction. We attended all 4 events they offered, the staff was great and friendly and the experience fun overall, you could just tell they had to push certain artists. We would’ve easily purchased artwork we requested if given the chance at auction. The ports were great, Cabo was fun with the beaches in walking distance. Mangos is a must go to spot for drinks and lunch on the beach. 3 days at sea were also great. Nice and relaxing not having to feel like you’re always at port needing to get off to see the sites. The Billy Joel show by James Fox was outstanding. A great performance. Read Less

I chose this cruise since another cruise line didn’t have showers, but a high step into tubs n showers. Embarkation was easy and no waiting around like my last cruise with Princess. Also Disembarked was as smooth this time around. I give them 5Stars grades. The ship just came out of being rehab and is looking so improved since my last time aboard her. Our cabin wasn’t very clean. I did have to clean out the drawers and pick up somebody else prescription drugs from under the beds. Couldn’t get extra pillows nor extra bath towels as requested. Dining was much improved only in the dining room. The buffet on the other hand was very cool food, eggs over cook and very rubbery. Try to get coffee that was a joke, and if you did to was lukewarm. Entertainment was just not up to par. The selection of movies in the cabin or outside on the screen was very much up to date. The Guy calling BINGO was very obnoxiously annoying. Read Less

We live in Los Angeles and wanted a Cruise we could drive too. Left our house in Encino and was on the ship one hour later. The service on the ship was a 10. All staff was very helpful and smiled. The ship was clean and crew always making it look spotless. The food in the Horizon was much better than the reviews we read previously. Enjoyed it for breakfast and late snacks. If I have to criticize anything it would be the lines to get a Hamburger at the pool during lunchtime. They could have used one more person. I still ate there every lunch. The burgers were the thickest I've ever had the pleasure of biting into on any ship I have been on. We would never have known this ship was over 10 years old. In Cabo the Tobasco Restaurant on Medano Beach was great. Drinks and food perfect and they did not rush us. We were there over 3 hours. Umbrellas and tables on the sand were very comfortable. The bonus was the Massage Tents next to the restaurant. 90 minute fantastic massage for $20.00. Best part of the beach experience. Read Less

Kelly and I had a great time. I’ve cruised before and it was Kelly’s first time. The cruise staff was great. Our cabin steward Joel could not have been any nicer. We got to experience the new dinner menu, which was outstanding. The breakfast and lunch in Horizon was good. The worst part was trying to find an available table. We became art collectors onboard. Dylan the art Director was great. We bought 6 Peter Max pieces. We are very excited for them to arrive at our house. We did excursions in Porta Valletta and Mazatlan. Both were great. We ventured off the ship in Cabo on our own. We were badgered by people peddling tours, souviniers, drugs, etc. we only lasted 30 minutes on land and went back to the ship. Customs was very pleasant and easy this time. We had a balcony room on the Caribe Deck (10) very spacious and comfortable. The cruise directors were great. I think we participated in almost every trivia challenge. Read Less
