As with most of our fellow passengers, this was our first visit to China. The trip comprised three land centres punctuated by a five day cruise on the Yangtze. The selected hotels in Shanghai, Xian and Beijing were all of a very high quality. Our trip started in Shanghai and ended in Beijing. This to us seemed the best option as it offered the only opportunity to see the pandas. Most of those we spoke to agreed that, with the benefit of hindsight, this was indeed the preferred option as, leaving the Terracotta Army, Forbidden City and Great Wall until the end of the trip diminished any possible feeling of anti-climax. We were fortunate to have an excellent guide, Johanna, who gave us comprehensive background to life in China and an interesting perspective on the changes wrought over the past century. It must be pointed out that we believed we had struck lucky with Johanna but those in other groups were equally enthusiastic about their guides. The specialist city guides too were all of a high quality. The visits were well chosen and informative although those of us staying away from downtown Shanghai would have liked more time on the Bund rather than a cursory drive through. Enrichment activities were organised in several centres, some include, some optional. We enjoyed the evening entertainment in Shanghai and the playing of the ancient instruments in Wuhan. We skipped the circus and duck dinner in Beijing both of which received mixed reviews. We did opt for the afternoon trip to the Summer palace in Beijing and were well rewarded. The transition from land to sea was smoothly handled. Embarkation was swift and welcoming. Services on the Emerald were excellent, a nice touch being that by the end of the first evening the dining room and bar staff had learned our names. The food was uniformly fine with several options for each course in the evening and some interesting choices at lunchtimes for those who were feeling adventurous. We purchased the drinks package which for $150 per head allowed more choice of wine/beer as well as extra drinks outside of mealtimes. Those who did not do so pronounced the complimentary beer and wines perfectly acceptable. The sit as you please dining arrangement allowed us to converse with other guests with whom we would not otherwise have met. The passengers seemed to be split 50-50 in terms of Brits and Americans and we enjoyed some pleasant evenings. Having cruised with Americans in the past we were happy not to meet any who whinged about their taxes and/or tried to convince us that Obama was not an American and should never have been allowed to take his place in the White House. These were truly a different breed! Dining in the cities was usually in the 'Lazy Susan' style allowing the opportunity to sample a number of different dishes. This we enjoyed. Excursions from the boat were well chosen. These included a transfer to smaller boats to sail the Lesser Three Gorges and a visit to the spectacular Shibaozhai pagoda. Entertainment on the boat was limited but the crew put on a couple of shows to showcase their talents. In truth, there was not a lot to do by day except to sit and enjoy the scenery but several informative lectures were provided by the Cruise Director, Paul. Everyone with whom we spoke expressed surprise at the modernisation of China and the speed of progress. Many cities unknown in the west have populations of millions. The memories of vast urban developments, the rush to embrace all things western, and the hugely entertaining interpretation of traffic laws will live long. China is a rapidly changing country with a fascinating past. A visit is enormously rewarding and Viking River Cruises' Imperial Jewels trip offers a value for money introduction to China. Read Less

We recently had a wonderful holiday with AMA Waterways on their Provence and Spain itinerary. This was our second river cruise in just over a year and we are hooked! The trip started with a 3-night stay at the conveniently located Pullman Montparnasse in Paris. This hotel was very busy as it catered to tour groups so the downside was line-ups and not such great service for breakfast but, apart from the very awkward to access bathtub, the room was well-appointed and we had a great view of Paris. Save on expensive taxi fares by taking the Air France shuttle bus from the airport. It only cost 16 Euros and stops at the Gare de Lyon and Gare Montparnasse right opposite the hotel. Our charming, efficient and excellent Tour Director, Abel, met us at the hotel and stayed with us throughout our entire trip. He did a wonderful job and we were sad to say goodbye to him. We boarded the cruise in Lyon after an efficient TGV high-speed train ride from Paris (lovely train but smelly washrooms). We were impressed with the ship. It has a very welcoming feel to it and we soon made ourselves at home. The public areas were well designed and very conducive to meeting fellow cruisers. The food was delicious with plenty of variety and the service throughout the ship was exemplary. Wine and beer were included both at lunch and dinner. The in-house entertainment was a bit weak with a pianist who played "elevator music" where everything pretty well sounded the same. He was very nice and friendly but didn't play anything we could dance to. He rarely sang. Some of the guest entertainers were better. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire itinerary. We loved Lyon-such an interesting city with so much to do. The included excursions offered a wide variety of things to see with some ports offering several options. We particularly enjoyed visiting the hilltop villages of Oignt in the Beaujolais region, pretty Grignan and the picturesque Les Baux-de-Provence. We also loved just being able to wander around the towns where we were docked. We were busy all the time but it was still relaxing and we had plenty of time to explore on our own. With the odd exception, the tour guides were excellent. Our cruise finished in Arles in the South of France but we were then taken by coach to Barcelona for three nights. This was an enjoyable journey with a two-hour en route stop in the charming French town of Perpignan. In beautiful Barcelona we stayed at the lovely, modern Le Meridien Hotel located right on the bustling La Rambla-perfect location within walking distance of the Gothic District, Plaza Catalunya with its department stores, the marina area and La Boqueria market and a multitude of bars and restaurants. We loved our room with its huge walk-in rain shower and plentiful lighting including motion-sensor nightlights. Apart from the included sightseeing tour, we would recommend taking the optional tour to spectacular Montserrat with its mountain-top monastery. Again, we saved on a taxi transfer to the airport by taking the very efficient airport shuttle bus from the Plaza Catalunya. It runs every 5 minutes and only costs 5.90 Euros. On a Sunday, it only took about 20 minutes. It was within easy walking distance of our hotel. We recommend this cruise itinerary. It was well-organized, varied and allowed us to stay in two of our favourite cities and visit areas of France we had never seen.   Read Less

When you have traveled a lot you think you have experienced it all but that's not true until you take a Viking river cruise. We did the 14 day Grand European on the Jarl. From the minute we left O'Hare Airport until we returned 15 days later we really never had to think, only experience. Viking truly thought of everything before we even knew we needed it. The cabins appear terribly small until you put everything away and there really is a place for everything. They are fine, the bed is wonderful and the showers are plenty large. The food was great for every meal with many choices and amazing soups for lunch every day. At every port the guides were there and ready for us, we never felt like they were herding cattle. The vox boxes were a real plus because you did not have to worry about being close enough to the guide to hear. It is hard to pick one place that was our favorite, I thought it was Cologne until we arrived in Budapest at night to all the lights. That experience itself made the trip worthwhile. Everyone is very casual and friendly and we made friends that we keep in touch with since our return. We are not big fans of the giant cruise ships but this is a totally different experience, you get to go sightseeing and relax all at the same time. Hopefully this is not our last Viking Cruise because we are both anxious to go again. The crew of the Jarl were truly wonderful and fun and by the end of the two weeks with only 180 passengers and 50 crew you know everyone. I especially loved the night when the introduced the entire crew, every single crew member not just the ones that interacted with passengers. The value for the money is extraordinary. Read Less

This was our first River cruise and our first trip with Viking. It is fair to say that our expectations were met or exceeded in every aspect of the cruise. The Ingvi was virtually brand new, and the ship was well equipped, spacious and comfortable. Our cabin was roomy and very easy to live in, with plenty of storage space. We thought the food was plentiful and of excellent quality. The information briefings each afternoon were helpful to get the most out of each stop. We boarded the ship in Basel, and we're able to walk to the ship from the train station. The disembarkation in Amsterdam was very near the train station, facilitating an easy trip to the airport. What we enjoyed most was the ability to walk to various attractions directly from the ship, without requiring additional transportation arrangements. We cannot wait to take another Viking River Cruise. Read Less

My wife and I have now taken two Viking River Cruises and without a doube enjoyed both with equal pleasure. Last year we returned from our first cruise with Viking and withing three wekks booked this year's adventure. Last year we traveled the Seine from Paris to Normandy; a great adventure. This year we traveled the Danube from Budapest to Nuremburg. We had decided to travel to Budapest a couple days early just to get over the travel lag and this was a wise decision. This also gae us an opportunity to see the wonderful city of Budapest on our own. For the citizens of Budapest, you have a wonderful city; thank you! On the day of our boarding on the Viking Delling, we were immediately greeted at dockside by the attendents that took our bags aboard. The receptionist recognized us immediately as returning Viking cruisers which made us feel very welcome. We were excorted to our cabin immedistely and then journeyed to the Aquavit Terrasce for a light lunch. They serve this for all early arrivals. Just a nice touch and this gives you a chance to get acquainted with some other fellow travelers. Our accomodations were as we expected, comfortable, very clean with a veranda. Keep in mind you will not be spending much time in your cabin. Far more places to be than in your cabin that are more comfortable with a much better view of the scenery. We spent most of our time on the Aquavit Terrace, great seats, foods and drinks to go along with the view. The staff were exceptional, all seasoned staff that knew how to make a trip more comfortable and pleasurable for the guest. After a couple days, they got to know your likes and dislikes and catered to that aspect of your personality. Great group of folks. Our cruise director, Merek was an amazing individual that treated everyone as if they were the only person on board. Very entertaining, knowledgable and would turn the world for you if he could. Food stafff were great and always knew when to approach the table to make sure you had what you needed before you knew you needed something. For all those folks looking at Viking, choose your destination and book. The trips are well planned with enough activities to keep you very busy and educatedand and also enough down time to relax or venture out on your own time. We will be planning additional Viking cruises or the alternative Viking Ocean cruise. All that they talk aboput in their literature and videos does ahppen and more. There is no hype to their commercials.   Read Less

By the second day I discovered the soup and salad bar in the lounge for lunch. The entertainment was very good and did an excellent job of incorporating local talent. The young lady that took care of the cabin was delightful and creative. She made me a birthday cake out of towels for my birthday. I have already signed up for trip next June. I met so many guest that were delightful to converse with. Learned so much about their cultures and life lessons. Read Less

The service, the meals, the staff, and the ship itself were all first class. We especially enjoyed all the destinations where the guides on shore were knowledgeable and friendly. The cruise director was really organized and gave us a good preview of every stop on the beautiful cruise up the Danube and Rhine toward our final destination, Amsterdam. Our two on-shore stays in Budapest and Amsterdam were also outstanding with the help on the Viking representatives on-shore. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting to see Europe on all its beauty and interesting culture. The entertainment on board was also very interesting and fun at times. No negatives at all from either my wife or myself. We enjoyed meeting the other passengers on board and I enjoyed being able to walk and run on the upper deck walking path. Read Less

My wife has always loved castles and always wanted to see the Alps in Switzerland. This was the perfect cruise for doing that. We traveled the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel. We spent two nights in Lucerne at the Palace Lucerne hotel. We had a lake side view with the mountains in background. Fantastic. The Viking Long ship was brand new, only three months old and very beautiful. From the rooms to the elegant atrium to the restaurant to the lounge and the upper deck everything was kept very clean and well kept. The one thing that we both commented on when we got home was how wonderful the crew treated us. I'm sure it wasn't easy with all the different needs people have. In my case, because of recent back surgery, I am not able to walk great distances. The concierge went out of her way to make sure we were taken care of. The morning we docked in Cologne she arranged for a rickshaw tour through the city. We had a great time with our guide, Stephan. All the shore excursions were well planned out with very qualified guides. When a bus was used it was always very clean. The trips were always on time. It was amazing that the new modern buildings were often along side ancient ruins. In summary we had a great time. My wife saw castles and the alps. The ship was like a floating 5 star hotel. We made some new friends.   Read Less

We loved our 7 day cruise on the Viking Forseti. We stayed in Bordeaux for a week before the cruise at a wonderful apartment (Wellkhome Apartments, 14 rue Blanc Dutrouilh, Bordeaux) & loved it so much we didn't mind the overlap of Bordeaux featured on the cruise itinerary. The Forseti was lovely - new, modern, beautifully furnished & comfortable. The included tours were also good but found the bus drivers drove too quickly to really take in the beautiful Chateaux we passed & photography was not possible. However, the tours themselves, with local guides, were very good. The food was very good & we loved eating lunch on the back deck. The staff were very professional, friendly & helpful. We had the Silver Drinks Package & found it of great value. Loved that we could have a glass of Veuve Cliquot any time we wanted & the wines at lunch & dinner were very good. Read Less

Excellent!!The crew was so kind and wantied to make you feel welcomed. They greated you with a smile wanting to make sure your trip was perfect. The tours in the towns we visited were lead by local area guides who were able to give you so much history of the area. They all seemed so proud to share their town. We have traveled in Europe several times both with a group and on our own. This cruise provided a perfect blend of both styles of travel. We started out in a bit of un certainty and ended up in total enjoyment and a great learning experience. The Trip was very easy and not pressured, with many off path adventures to some very neat places( Transylvania} to see & visit Count Dracu's haunts. So very interesting. On to a lot of small area's and got to visit with the local people and had a chance to mix and learn customs. The entire staff was so very friendly and helpful. We had one of the best Cruse Directors ever. He was one of the best I have ever meet. A total joy to be with and very smart about all the varied places we went to. With Him, everything flowed just like the River, smooth and easy going. We returned home after this great trip and had made some new friendship's and so many great memories. This was our first river cruise. The river cruiser was excellant and the food was absolutlely fabulous. The cabin was clean and comfortable, and all the staff on board were friendly and helpful. The itinerary was good with excursions being in the morning and optional ones in the afternoon. However, some of the excursion destinations were particularly disappointing with very little to see or do. Other excursions needed more time for sightseeing rather than a tour around a particular building. Some of the local guides made it very clear that the Balkan war may be over but nothing was forgetten and definately not forgiven. We took the add-on 3 nights to Transylvania. Overall it was enjoyable, but there was little time to explore Brasos, which was our base. We also took an optional excursion to Constana on the Black Sea. This was a very poor tour. It took a long time to get there and was very boring. I would not recommend it. The experience overall was fantastic and we met many interesting people from all over the world. We have booked another cruise for next year!   Read Less

This was our first river cruise and our high expectations were met. The dining venues and seating in common areas allowed for personal preference and were kept spotlessly clean. We found the captain and all staff to be helpful and friendly without being pushy. Really excellent crew. I had expected a sort of token tour for each day's port, but I was so very wrong. The included tours were excellent, complete in every way. The guides knew the area, could answer questions easily and were personable without being intrusive. The individual sound packs made hearing easy even in large groups. The Viking buses are excellent and our driver was amazing! Optional tours were explained clearly. Ample time was available to enjoy all three meals aboard and still join any tour. We loved the Alsace tour to Klipfel Winery. Actually, we rate the overall organization as excellent. The behind-the-scenes planning and execution made for seamless trips on and off the Tor for excursions as well as for embarkation and debarkation. Food was uniformly delicious and presented beautifully. No overwhelming piles of food, but lots of choices. It was fun getting multiple appetizers to try the unusual. Buffet and/or menu service at breakfast was a treat. Lunch buffet on the back deck was special. Entertainment is not a high priority for us, but everything we participated in was very well done and enjoyable. The talks about the next day's stop were informative, but not overly detailed. Great! We had a great time on our Amsterdam extension. Again, the included tour was excellent. The hotel was lovely, the views were terrific and the front desk staff very helpful. The hotel dining staff could be trained to be more guest friendly, but the food was good. In short, we prefer this river cruise over every ocean itinerary we have participated in. (If Viking can figure out how to eliminate cold, rainy, foggy days--especially during the Rhine castle viewing day--they will have achieved perfection!) Read Less

As a treat to ourselves, we decided to indulge in a holiday where we had everything organised for us. We don't like sitting on beaches - we like to be active and see interesting things. Our ship was exactly like the ones we had seen on TV, and we were given a really nice room with our own shower room en suite and a great view of the water - at eye level! Brilliant. We could see swans swimming up to the glass, we saw the inside of a lock in the middle of the night. Loved it! There was a great system for checking us off and on the boat, and once we got used to the way it worked, we felt most secure - no chance of getting lost or left behind. We were able to choose which activities which suited us best, and also the quality i.e. did we want the active or the gentle trip? We really enjoyed the range of activities, especially having our own personal courier in a range of languages. We learnt far more this way than we would have done if we'd been wandering alone. The food was wonderful. In some situations I have problems since I don't eat meat, but I always had a huge choice - served by fantastic waiters with load of humour. Great salads in the middle of the day, so we didn't put on too much weight. Even when we could not get our boat under the bridges and therefore did not reach our expected destination, we were not disappointed - we had local trips instead. Much more fun. We still got to our disembarkation point without any problems - and so careful over security with baggage. We really enjoyed our trip and have already booked into another one on a different river. I am not easily impressed, but our first river cruise (Moscow to St. Petersburg) was just great! Russia was so surprising - I grew up thinking that all buildings in Russia were old and gray. Just the opposite: Moscow was very modern. In St. Petersburg, we found beautiful 17th / 18th century buildings. For me, the most amazing part of Russia was the churches. I thought that the socialists there had destroyed all the churches, and they did do that to many, but there were a lot of beautiful Russian Orthodox churches throughout our trip. Beautiful icons covered the walls of the churches, some of which were 500 years old. While we saw many sites, Peter the Great's Palace and Catherine the Great's Palace were fantastic. Secondly, no trip is enjoyable if the boat and the crew are not of high quality. The Rurick had been renovated a year ago, so it was like new. While our room was small, we had no problems with it. The Veranda was great to watch the scenery as it went by . The restaurant was very nice with good food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maybe most important was the crew. They were great! 100%. They learned our names in a day. They solved any issues we had. When we stopped on the river, the crew would tell us exactly where to go to buy items and where not to go. In the restaurant, the waiter and waitress we had (we sat with others at a corner table) would essentially "reserve" our table by serving the drinks that we liked before we even got there. There was always something to do on the boat. I really liked the afternoon talks we had about the history of Russia. They were not political - mostly just the facts, I understand a lot more about Russia now. Because this river cruise was so good, we are taking another river cruise in Europe in 2015. The cruises aren't cheap, but you get your money's worth. And as they say, "You can't take it with you". Nick G.   Read Less

This was a very enjoyable holiday. The places we visited were all very interesting & the guides were, as usual with Viking, superb. The only downside was the low water level in the Elbe between Wittenberg & Meissen. This is not Viking's fault & they made up for it by bussing us to all the places advertised for the cruise plus an extra visit , to Leipzig. This obviously meant a lot of time on a bus instead of cruising so not as relaxing as we'd hoped particularly since we had to change ships, but, given the circumstances, Viking did an excellent job. This obviously is not the first time the water level was low but Viking had a well planned & executed Plan B. Apart from this, the rest of the cruise was wonderful. The food was particularly good. I am a Coeliac so cannot eat anything with wheat/gluten in it. No problem- the menu was adapted and all the staff knew I had to have gluten free food. All the staff were very friendly & exceptionally helpful. This was our third cruise & we've just booked another (on the Rhone). That says it all. Read Less

Our two nights at the Sofitel Hotel in Budapest were delightful. it was a great experience and jumping off point for our explorations on the Pest side of the city. The staff and Viking rep were very accommodating for our every need. Our transfers (airport to hotel, hotel to ship, ship to airport) were smooth and went off without a hitch. From the moment of embarkation on the Kara, to the final fond farewell, we were thrilled with this trip. The possibilities were endless, and we were fortunate to be able to participate with such an enthusiastic and well informed crew! The views, the information, the food, the sites...one cannot say enough good! The cabin was well appointed and a great comfortable space to return to after an outing, a tour, a meal, or hanging out topside. We were treated like old friends from the first day aboard this luxurious craft. Our cabin steward never failed to refit our cabin will all the necessities and amenities, as if with a magic wand! The walking tours and optional tours that were offered were very well planned, with a little something for everyone! They were educational and fascinating. We were brought to tears by the beauty of the concert we attended. Everyone expects Five Star dining on board a cruise. The chef and dining staff of the Kara for our trip provided SIX Star or better dining for every meal! It was such a pleasure to relax in the lounge every evening. We were provided entertainment by 'local' entertainers, our incredibly gifted piano player, and games/entertainment/information by our cruise director. The bartenders enhanced the entertainment with their skills, turning the creation of some drinks into a show all by themselves! I cannot wait for a chance to return. Knowing every trip is different, we would take this exact cruise over again and perhaps see another portion of the wonderful lands through which we traveled. The planning is underway in our household for our next Viking River Cruises adventure. My thanks, again, to the wonderful, friendly and engaging crew who were instrumental in making this the 'Best trip EVER!' Read Less

My wife and I have been on cruises before. This was head and shoulders superior to our prior experiences. We choose cruises by the cruise line and the places where the cruise is going. We want to go places of interest and not merely be in warm waters in the Caribbean. This cruise went to places of great interest starting with Paris, Monet's gardens, Normandy and many intermediate stops of great interest. The people running the cruise on board were outstanding in every respect. The educational value and on line tour guides were exceptional. The food was beyond our expectations. The unexpected minor surprises such as the musician singing French songs as we returned from a tour and his continued playing during the meal which followed were nice. Being greeted as we returned from a tour by a special drink is another example of positives. The onboard special event and previews were both entertaining and helpful. The emotional tour of Normandy, the American military cemetery and Omaha beach are experiences we will never forget. The Guillard Castle was special. Interestingly, while on most tours some people complain about many things, the people on this cruise seemed to be very happy with the experience. Our experience was so positive that within 48 hours of returning home we booked a Viking Danube cruise for next year.   Read Less

The guides we had were excellent and gave us lots of information. Our cabin on board was roomy and comfortable and the meals were amazing! Viking had arranged local singers and dancers to come on board to entertain us which were most enjoyable and great fun. The cruise ended in Bucharest where we again stayed in a lovely hotel in the centre of the city. From there we were taken to the airport to fly back home. We certainly enjoyed our trip very much! I should like to say that last year on our Viking cruise we had some money stolen in a city and the Viking crew could not have been more helpful! Our first time in Europe and with Viking River Cruises. What an experience! Our stateroom was great, but we were barely in our room since we took advantage of the included tours and most of the optional ones. Our guides were of high quality. They knew the subject matter and many were very entertaining too. The tour groups were small enough that we were able to move efficiently around each town. The use of individual headsets for each member of the group was very effective. We could easily hear the tour guides without having to be right next to them. We really appreciated seeing the palaces, castles, and churches. A lot of walking and a few days of rain, but we were prepared thanks to the trip material sent to us in advance. Our cruise director, Klause, was excellent. His daily briefings were very informative. The food was fantastic! The chef and his staff prepared a variety of regional foods that made it hard to choose which dish to pick. We ordered several dishes we may not have normally tried, but we had confidence in our chef and were never disappointed. I can't say enough about our wait staff! They were very efficient and served us as if we were guests at their homes. Just a few days into the cruise they knew our preferences in wine, soft drinks, and water. Even though they were busy we seldom had to wait for anything. We extended our trip by adding two days to the beginning of our trip in Amsterdam. Somehow we left our camera at the Radisson Blue hotel as we were transferring our luggage to the shuttle that took us to our ship. I contacted someone at the counter of the ship as soon as we noticed the camera was gone a few hours later. He contacted the hotel staff, but they offered little help. On advice of an experienced cruise passenger we contacted our Hotel Manager, Guiome, the next day. He started making contacts immediately and worked with Klause on the issue. Klause continued to make calls throughout the rest of the cruise. He kept us informed on a daily basis, but we were unable to recover our camera even though we had several reports that the camera was found and shipped to our next port. We really appreciated Klause's efforts to recover our camera. Even though we lost our camera and two days worth of pictures our cruise was a fantastic experience. We are continually looking at other Viking river cruises and ocean cruises.   Read Less

Originally I thought this was very over priced for 7 nights, but after the trip I had completely changed my mind. We did in one week what would have taken us on our own about 3 weeks. When you factor those extra two weeks, the cost of the Viking cruise was very reasonable. We saw so much and it was so easy. Just show up when and where you're told and the rest is just pure pleasure. Every detail is taken care of so you don't have to worry about a thing. The tour guides were exceptional. Their local knowledge and personalities made the tours a real treat. I loved the sound system Viking provided that let you listen at a distance and not miss a single word. This was perfect for me because I'm a photographer and was able to stop and get any picture I wanted and never miss what the guide was saying. The people on the boat lived up to everything Viking had promised. Always cheerful, helpful and kind. The tour director was amazing. His personality alone kept the entire week exciting and fun. We wondered if all the boats were blessed with someone this amazing. The person who took care of our cabin was also exceptional. Very personable and kind. We ended up tipping her extra just because of the quality of service she provided. Read Less

Thank you for asking our opinion. As this was our third cruise with Viking, we have become used to the very high standards, not only in hospitality, but also in organisation. We have been to Russia, to China, and this year to Europe. We found the cabins on our previous cruises slightly more roomy, but we understand that there are limits to the size of the ships on the European rivers. We went on, and enjoyed, all the on-shore excursions with very knowledgeable guides, but here we have a suggestion. The guides are excellent and told us an enormous lot about the buildings, the towns and the history. However, we found that after even a short while we could not remember most of what they told us, something our fellow passengers also found. It would be really helpful if Viking could provide a more detailed information sheet with all the information the local guides give us, after we return to the ship, so that we could return to it again at a later date. It seems a pity that all the work and effort the guides put in to explain to us, is lost again through no fault of theirs, but through our limited memories. We were planning to join another cruise in 2015, but unfortunately there was no room available at a time convenient for us. We have asked the office in London to put our name on a waiting list just in case there is a cancellation and we hope to cruise with Viking again in the near future. Read Less

My husband and I heard about AMA Waterways from an acquaintance. We booked our trip on the AMADagio .The trip was absolutely wonderful and the staff was outstanding. Our cruise director, Abel Ramos, was always there and always able to answer any questions we had. AMA did a wonderful job of selecting the excursions we had and the guides were very knowledgeable in each of the areas we went to. We found our room to be very nice and fit our needs perfectly. We enjoyed the entertainment that they provided. The staff in the dining room was very pleasant and tried to accommodate any dietary needs that you wanted. As for the staff, I had a sleep machine with me and the young lady taking care of our room knew to bring in distilled water. We can't wait to go on another trip with AMA!!!!! It was fantastic. Everything from the time we arrived at the Orlando airport, to the time we returned to the same, was professionally done. The ship was immaculate and the crew's friendly welcome set the tone for our cruise up the lazy Elbe River. The daily activities were interesting and well organized. The availability of different tours based on the physical ability of the passenger made it more enjoyable for all. The local guides provided many antidotes that enliven their presentations. It was truly a laid-back time, totally restful and enjoyable. The limited number of passengers made it possible to get acquainted with most of them. This added to our enjoyment The tables of ten for eating also enabled us to meet most of the passengers. The Captain and his principal subordinates were always available to the passengers. They were extremely friendly and open to answer any and all questions. The room, though small, (we were on a ship and this must be considered), had all the necessities: a comfortable bed, its own toilet and shower, and sufficient storage for the clothes we brought and items we bought. Housekeeping did a tremendous job keeping it immaculate. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise. It made our celebration of our 50th anniversary very memorable. Read Less
