I had some extra time prior to the cruise to look around Southampton itself with its old city walls and Tudor House, plenty of shops. I also went over to the Isle of Wight on the car ferry to East Cowes. Takes I hour. There is a bus just near the terminal which I caught to Osborne House. I spent over 4 h there and then returned. Buses go all over the island. Read Less

We arrived in Heathrow and took a National Express bus to Southampton Coach Station. Not many taxis in sight but when one came around, we asked him to call his taxi friends at the port to come over to pick us.

We disembarked in Southampton. Unfortunately, we had to do face-to-face customs on the ship, which significantly delayed our departure. Everyone was getting off at the same time so the taxi queues were incredibly long. Once in a taxi, it's an easy, five-minute ride to the central train station and cost 7 pounds. I'm not sure if the taxis take credit cards, so you'll want to make sure to have local currency first. From Southampton, we took the train to Victoria Station in London. We had bought advanced tickets online; however, we missed our scheduled train due to the long lines at customs and in the port. We were able to buy tickets for the next train (they depart once every hour) for less than 20 Euros pp. The journey is 1:45 hrs. There were also trains to Waterloo Station. From Victoria Station, you can take the Underground to other parts of the city. We stayed in a hotel near Victoria and walked. Read Less

Port was not ready for 4k+ passengers to be dumped 2 days earlier. NCL did not have enough buses to offer excursions for their passengers.

Southampton is a very nice port. You can just walk to the city center as well as the train station very easily.

We got off the ship during the long layover and went to Winchester. We caught a cab to the train station and took one of the many trins there. We visited the round table (no big deal), the cathedral, the Royal Green Jackets Museum (for Sharpe fans) with an excllent Waterloo diorama, Wolvesay Castle, walked along the river and ate pizza in the cute downtown area. If we had more time we would have gone to the Hospital of Saint Cross which is a lovely walk to the Hospital which is not a hospital but one of the last surviving medieval almshouses with a lovely chapel. Most of the ports that we visited were 20-40 minutes away from the town as well as being mostly container ports which were noisy and dirty. We felt that Cunard had not given much thought to the age of the passengers who were mainly 65+ with limited mobility. Some of the ports of call used coaches that had no air con/pa system and were built for the local ‘slight’ population. Not much thought given to the trips that were offered which could be challenging for younger/able bodied people not really for those on board ship Read Less
