Our main goal was to have time to spend in St. Petersburg to have plenty of time to visit the Hermitage and the Czars Palaces. We added 2 hotel days so we could hire a private guide and her car for 3 days to take us to the country side, Kronstadt and her favorite places in the city. We are 2 couples and we think we see more in small group of four which costs little more but adds a lot. Our hotel was central city, 3 blocks from the Hermitage. We spent 12 days on the Truvor boat. No complaints at all. Excellent service, great food, rooms as nice as we've had on a cruise. The small towns we visited along the way to Moscow were interesting, but not spectacular. they provided a look at central rural Russia. Moscow is a typical big city of Europe. Four to 5 story buildings centrally surrounded by the high rises apartment houses holding the population since communist times. Russia is surprisingly modern with excellent roads, all the fast food places and high end shops of other big cities. The history of Russia dominates the included tours, monuments, parks and seemingly every part of Russian life. You continually hear about wars, the military, great generals, czars both men and women, the differences between communist Russian from 1917 to 1991, and modern Russian since 1991. We always felt safe. Saw no evidence of KGB type stuff. Viking's part was to make us have a floating home to return to each evening and to meet our every need. They were totally successful. Our cruise were 95% appreciate Americans, who enjoyed this chance to finally see and better understand Russia for ourselves with no propaganda on either side. Had we just got to see the Hermitage the trip would have been worth it, but we got so much with Viking handling the details of the trip so well. Thank you Viking. Wanted to see Russia! The cruise offered what I was interested. The excursions were very interesting and exceeded my expectations. The dining experience was great. The food was excellent, but our servers were extraordinary...very accommodating, but lots of fun. The lady in the gift shop was extremely helpful...made very good suggestions. I really appreciated the postcards, availability to buy stamps and the opportunity to have someone mail them for me. Absolutely no complaints, only compliments! Highly recommend this cruise. I would definitely go again! I really like the variety of activities that the shore excursions allowed me to experience. The guides on the ship were very knowledgeable, but also spoke English very well. The local guides were knowledgeable and spoke English fluently. I really appreciated the excellent the communication system that our guide spoke into and that I could hear with no problems! Thank you for providing a most rewarding cruise for me. Highly recommend! My wife and I wanted to visit Russia and we thought this would be a good way to see the country. We had no idea what a great decision we had made. From the time we landed in Moscow to the time we left to the extended trip to Helsinki, we never touched our luggage. The service we received was exceptional. The food was fantastic. Our expectations were exceeded only by the restaurant service staff. Service to our cabin was absolutely perfect. The first day on board we found to large bottles of water in our cabin. We emptied the bottles before the evening. From that point forward on the second day we received two bottles in the morning and two in the evening without requesting anything from staff. Everyone paid attention to all our needs without being asked. Ports and shore excursions were unbelievable. We learned so much history from our leaders and they were exceptional in their knowledge of the country. We made a number of cruise friends that we plan to stay in touch with. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the Russia experience. We absolutely loved the small ship and the small number of passengers. Our cabin was perfect - clean and plenty of room. The food was fantastic and the dining staff met all of our needs and requests. I cannot say enough about the staff supporting the entire ship and cruise. Not only did they take excellent care of us, we had a great time getting to know them personally. The shore excursions were extremely well planned. The excursion leaders were well educated about Russia not only for current life styles but educating us about Russia from early history. This was a trip of a life time for my wife and myself. We thought that this would be a one time trip but we are now looking and planning for future river cruises with Viking. Meeting other people on the cruise was wonderful and finding out that most of them had taken more than one cruise with Viking and as many as seven cruises. We are looking forward to our next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

I've wanted to visit St. Petersburg since having guests from there in 2000. We were never very interested in Ocean Crusing, but the idea of river cruising and traveling to many places without having pack and unpack and schlepp luggase was very attractive. We were busy every day with shore tours, language, history and cultural classes and we loved meeting and dining with new friends, the excellent, friendly staff and the wonderful tour guides. Visiting Russia this way was truely an unforgetable experience and Viking made it easy from beginning to end. We did this cruise in celebration of our 35th wedding anniversary. As we both still work, it was wonderful to spend so much time together in such a relaxing environment. We will always recommend river cruising to our family and friends and that's probably the only way we will cruise in the future/ Many thanks to all the folks at Viking. Booking, activities, crew, service staff and guides...you did a great job of making our trip enjoyable and unforgetable. Read Less

Great opportunity to see Russia. It is unique in many ways. The cities are like other great European cities with history, architecture and art to explore. The countryside is beautiful and unspoiled. This river cruise was a wonderful way to see the countryside. Everything was handled so there was no stress to the travel. Representatives met us and handled everything to get us on board and in our cabins easily. The ship was a good size -- not too big and not too small. Our cabin provided plenty of storage so luggage could be stored away. Food/Dining was exceptional with a nice inclusion of local dishes. We even had a cooking class for a local favorite - pelmeni. Onboard, during the sail there were plenty of choices of lectures on Russian history, language lessons, visiting the Bridge and other entertainment. There were many shore excursions - most of them included in the price. The Viking staff made the trip fun and encouraged us to practice our Russian. The majority were Russians and they were happy to talk with us about their country. Would we go again? Yes, absolutely! Friends have raved about the Viking River Cruise experience. We now understand why. Read Less

We always wanted to see more of Russia than the usual port-call at St. Petersburg on a typical Baltic cruise (did that years ago). So we did the 12-night Viking river cruise on the Truvor from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Our family and friends were concerned about our extended stay in Russia. Other passengers reported the same concerns from their friends and families. Forget about it -- this trip is fantastic! Exceeded our already high expectations. Everyone had a marvelous time on the Truvor cruise. The ship was comfortable and clean. Every amenity is included. The staff knows your name and preferences by the 2nd day. If you enjoy cocktails, buy the beverage package even though beer and wine is included at meals. With the package you get a much wider choice of beverages. We met typical Russians on the street, in stores and in their homes. They could not have been friendlier or more hospitable. The ship's staff was outstanding: Hotel Manager Frank was extraordinary -- taking care of any issues that came up immediately and professionally. Tour Director Kathrine took pains to explain every detail of the activity-planned experience. The chef Jurgen took care to make sure our meals were prepared to order. NOTE: This is a very active itinerary. If you participate in the offered excursions and activities, you will reap many new experiences and benefits --seeing and doing things you never dreamed of (vodka tasting, Russian cooking classes, meeting Russians in their homes, sightseeing throughout the traveled areas, Cossack dancing shows, etc). Highly recommended for people seeking a new cruise experience. Read Less

This was an absolutely first rate experience. The crew were excellent - ranging from the chambermaid who left our cabin looking spotless to the serving staff - an excellent mix of Russian and Philippino staff. Cruise Director was very good. The ship is very comfortable with lots of places to sit (Viking Truvor) and they made a real effort to make the trip special - an impromptu BBQ at lunch time on the Sun Deck and two cocktail parties with limitless Russian 'champage'. As much wine or beer as you could drink at meal times. Bar prices, in Units=US $,were high (for a post Brexit Brit) with a tonic costing nearly £4 - and unless you say just a little ice you have a glass full of ice and very little tonic. If you are a light sleeper avoid Cabin 417 on the Upper Deck as it is just below the piano in the bar! 413 has a pillar in it - as do other cabins - so worth checking for one withou when booking. The shore excursions were generally excellent although the Ballet in St Petersburg was danced by a stand-in troupe while the real professionals spent the Summer touring. Read Less

This was the first time that my husband and I went on a cruise. The cruise itself was wonderful. I can't think of anything that could have made it better. We had a wonderful room which was much more spacious than I had imagined. And the twice daily housekeeping by Anna was excellent. My husband had a birthday while we were on the tour and Happy Birthday was spelled out in candies on the bed and a bottle of champaign left in the room. The food was excellent at very meal with enough options to keep anyone happy. The whole cruise runs like a well oil machine. Although the tours went at a faster pace than my husband and I usually travel, they were well organized and all of the local guides were well informed and kept things interesting. There were lots of fun activities and informative lectures onboard the boat. The crew was wonderful. I would not be able to think of one negative thing to say about any one of them. And of course meeting all your fellow passengers from around the world is certainly the highlight of any tour you take. The only negative comment I will make about this trip had to do with our flights and not with the cruise itself. We did not get final flight details until very late so were unable to make any changes to them. We did not arrive at the boat until 1:00am on July 6th, missing the first day of the tour. And we had to leave the boat at 3:15am on the last day of the tour. For the amount of money we paid I truly believe that Viking ciould have arranged more convenient times for us to travel. One helpful comment I can make is in regards to the optional tours. Unless it is something that you really have your heart set on doing, I would not sign up and pay for any of the optional tours. All of the tours that are included plus the activities onboard will keep you very busy. What free time you have left might be better spent enjoying a drink in the bar with all the new friends you will make. Read Less

Actually the cruise was better than expected. First time with Viking, had three cruises with Uni-world, was better in some ways. Russia was very much like a German river cruise we had experienced. Just beautiful! The staff was what made it .Russian history and culture was a real experience. The shore excursions especially the Ballet, Russian dancing and the "vodka" were something I like to do again. If you like the experience of sailing down a river with the wind in your hair and a glass of wine in your hand, this for you. The Russian staff were super nice.Russia turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Going to a Russian market and trying all the different food items was a real treat. Later the Ship's crew surprised us with a lunch using the fresh food from that market. I bought the video of the trip, its worth the price. Read Less

Great variety of shore excursions or delightful to simply stay aboard ship and relax. Of course the dining experiences were extraordinary, food always exceptional and waiter staff superior. We would definitely go again and recommend highly to our friends. Viking gave us great value and we look forward to many more cruises with them. A highlight of our cruise was meeting new friends that share our interests and love of traveling. We've already planned to cruise again with delightful couple from British Columbia we met on board this cruise. Again I can't say enough about the "above and beyond" level of service, friendliness and professionalism of the entire crew - Viking indeed absolutely spoiled us and set the bar higher other cruises. The trip covered the areas that I wished to see and was recommended by friends .previous experience with Viking had bee very positive. The cruise combined culture of the people, amazing architecture and knowledgeable guides who added to the enjoyment of the trip. I enjoyed the musical and cultural events in particular the Ballet. In future I would explore the embarkation city , One of the draw backs was the traffic in Moscow which added many unproductive hours to the day which would have been better served by visiting the sites , is there not a way to moor closer to the center of town? I particularly enjoyed the time in Saint Petersburg ; the the extended tour of The Hermitage should be the included tourThe least enjoyable part was the time spent in Mandrogy. The service onboard was exceptional in all ways and i definitely would book to do another tour with Viking. Read Less

While we have done several ocean cruises this was our first river cruise and our first experience with Viking. We were on board the Viking Truvor. Viking downplays the ships they use in Russia in comparison to their European cruises. After spending 14 days on the ship we do not understand why they do this. While maybe not as modern as some more recent additions to the fleet, Truvor was immaculate, superbly maintained, very comfortable and had an outstanding crew. We had a veranda cabin on deck 4. Cabin was well laid out and very usable. Everything worked the way it is supposed to. Our cabin attendant kept the cabin immaculate. Food is of course subjective. We mostly did the continental breakfast in the Panorama Lounge looking out over the bow of the ship. Good light breakfast selection which was what we were looking for. Two very nice Russian young ladies took good care of us. We also did lunch here most days. Dinners in the main dining room, which is large enough to seat all passengers were mostly very good, a few were excellent and a couple were just OK. Overall the food was better than what we had on our last ocean cruise with Celebrity. Many Russian specialties were offered, including a theme dinner and a buffet on the sun deck one afternoon while we were on the waterways. These were all really good and well worth trying. The chef was very visible and friendly. The maître d – Roland was far and away the best maître d we have every encountered. He actually worked the dining room helping the staff and chatting with guests. Overall we would rate the food as very good and have no complaints. A general note on the staff. Everyone on the ship from the folks maintaining our rooms, the 3 on board Tour Directors, the Hotel Manager, and the Filipino and Russian staff in the dining room and lounges was superb. Friendly, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to travel with. The presentations from the on board Tour Directors covering Russian history up to today were very well done and informative even for someone who is a Russian history buff. Tours from the ship were all very interesting and worthwhile. Local guides spoke excellent English and were very knowledgeable. Viking offers a number of optional for a fee tours on this voyage and we took advantage of many since this was a one time trip for us. Moscow was fascinating particularly traveling on their subway and we especially enjoyed the evening folk instrument concert. The stops at the smaller towns on the way to St Petersburg were all very different and informative. We found the home visit and the wood stave churches on Kizhi Island to be the outstanding highlights – but all stops were very good. St Petersburg is totally different from Moscow. Seeing the Peterhof, the Peter and Paul Fortress and Catherine’s Palace and attending a ballet performance were highlights. Overall this trip rates way up there with our favorites and we would highly recommend for anyone interested in the history, culture and sights of Russia. Traveling with Viking on this trip was a real pleasure. A few things to be aware of: The Moscow airport (DME) is at least a two and a half hour and up to a four hour drive from the ship. Moscow traffic is incredible (fifth worst in the world) so it takes up to 1.5 hours to go from the ship to the center of Moscow and back. Some days we made this trip 3 times which is a lot of wasted time. Viking should consider options for folks to stay in Moscow for lunch rather than always going back to the ship. While we expected it in St Petersburg, the large amount of tourist activity in Moscow was a surprise to us. The Peterhof and Catherine’s Palace in St Petersburg are must do activities. We were disappointed by the tour of the Hermitage, very crowded and very rushed. Do not assume that in Moscow and St Petersburg that the “in depth” walking tours cover the same highlights as the bus based tours. In St Petersburg we had signed up for the walking tour not realizing that it did not go to the Peter and Paul Fortress which we wanted to see. Easy enough to swap but we would not have known this if we had not asked one of the local guides. Read Less

I thought the Waterway of the Tsars cruise was excellent! Everything was done to make passengers feel comfortable and we had so many interesting experiences I am still in awe thinking about it. I also enjoyed talking to the tour guides and other people who worked on the ship, which I felt gave me more of an idea of what life is really like in Russia. Of course this cruise was just a brief overview, and life on a daily basis is much different from a short ship adventure, but I was impressed at the intelligence of the guides, the quality of the food, the service, and the helpfulness of most everyone on board. It must be a bit like herding cats to deal with such a large group of people, and I thought that every attempt was made to make it a great experience. You could opt for whatever extras you wanted, or just opt to hang out on the ship and do as you pleased. Several people on this cruise especially impressed me. These included Kathrin, the Program Director, Alexei Kostukov, one of the guides, and another guide, Misha Ryabokorov. I didn't get to talk to the third guide as much, Andrej, but he was also very helpful. I also enjoyed two of the wait staff and thought they were very helpful, a young woman from Siberia named Anastasia, and a man from the Phillipines, Rommel. I am still in a state of shock at how wonderful the culture of Russia is and how different and yet the same life there seems to life here. I only knew of Russia from books, movies and music, and seeing and experiencing it in person gave me more of a sense of the place as it really is. Read Less

We are seasoned travelers and have been all over the world on land, sea and river tours. Without a doubt, the Russian River Tour was at the top of our experiences. The activities, tours, guides and lectures were excellent. The guides and lecturers were very well informed and answered all our questions, openly. Everything was very organized from airport greeting to airport farewell. Our suite on the Truvor was roomy and well appointed. We loved the towel elephant our room attendant made. We especially loved the twin sinks in the bathroom. Unfortunately, we felt that the food was not excellent. We were served lamb and poultry that was severely under cooked. For the most part the food was good. We enjoyed the Swan Lake ballet, folk dancing and folk instrument concert. Our flights to and from our destination were very good. We highly recommend this tour. Everything about our Russian River Cruise was beyond enjoyable. The ship, Viking Truvor, was lovely and immaculate, the staff friendly, accommodating, personable, and so efficient. Our cabin was designed well and we had room to spare when all our things were put away. The bed and pillows were so, so comfortable that we slept like babies every night. We've traveled a lot internationally and thought we couldn't be "surprised" by things we'd see in Russia. We knew things would be impressive, but there are no words to explain the degree of beauty in the palaces, churches, and museums. It just took our breath away. Viking arranged wonderful tours and provided very interesting on-boat presentations. We came home with our heads spinning from how lovely are Moscow and St. Petersburg. And I can't forget to praise the leisurely cruise between the two cities on the Volga and the interesting stops along the way. All in all, we would rate this river cruise as one of our most wonderful vacations, and we will certainly be traveling again with Viking! We have NO complaints. Read Less

This was my second Viking River Cruise and my Husband's first. We were greeted at the train from Helsinki and driven to our ship. We were welcomed on Viking Truvor with pleasure and directed to our cabin where everything was "shipshape". Our luggage was delivered promptly. St. Petersburg was splendid and exceeded our expectations. Our Guide, Misha, was excellent throughout the entire cruise. The local guides were excellent as well and all spoke English very well. The service aboard the ship was excellent. Everyone of the staff went out of their way to introduce themselves and remember our names from then on through the remainder of the cruise. Not only did they remember our names but the type of tea I drank as an example. The cities/ towns and villages we visited on our way to Moscow were unique. Having tea in a private home and visiting a school were some of the unique experiences we enjoyed. Loved all the art museums,as well as the palaces which were lavish and the churches as well. The onboard lectures, tours of the ship were very informative and great fun, thoroughly enjoyable. Moscow was more beautiful than I expected. The Kremlin, in Moscow was amazing and St Basils was spectacular. The only disappointment in the entire cruise was the tour of the Jewish Museum which was scheduled on a Jewish Holiday and they were closing early. We were given a very superficial tour the staff there obviously finding us an inconvenience. Our local guide was embarrassed and very apologetic. Overall an excellent and comprehensive cruise. This was my aunt's cruise and I was accompanying her to help her as she is elderly. I was pleasantly surprised with the help we received although we were very self sufficient. The advice that we received regarding where we were able to go with her walker was excellant and they accomodated us where possible. Viking cruises was very helpful with information prior to the trip and we were not dissapointed when we arrived. The crew was very friendly and the program director was very organized and everything was on time. The shore excursions were excellent, well thought out, and very informative. I wish we could have taken in all of the optional excursions but there were too many to fit in and we had to have some rest time! Dining was excellent, we always had a choice of local offerings, but if you wanted to stick to the basics, they were on the menu as well. The only downfall of the Russian cruise is that we were not docked within easy access of the cities. We were well out of town and had to do the shore excursions. It limited our freedom, but since the shore excursions were great, it was not a deal breaker. The entertainment on ship was not top class and therefore we didn't go into the lounge at night. I loved the Panorama bar during the day as it gave us the opportunity to sit in an area that had the perfect view of the landscape while sailing while you played cards, downloaded your pictures on your computer, or enjoyed a leisurely drink. I also liked the Russian language lessons and the lectures about the history and culture and also the meetings in the evening before then next day's excursions. It really brought the whole experience together. I met a lot of wonderful people and would definitely recommend Viking Cruises to anyone who is interested in a river cruise. Read Less

We got a "cannot turn down deal" of $3900 including free air! We had actually been planning to go next year, but when we were offered this rate, we grabbed it. Started in St. Petersburg: only complaint, the tour of Peterhof Castle was an optional one and we didn't do our homework. We didn't choose it and missed the best thing in St. Petersburg! This tour should be included. St. Petersburg has so much to offer. It is a beautiful European city. Next stop: Mandrogy is a made-up "Disney" stop. It's a little village of craftsmen. It was interesting, but not my favorite stop. The other 4 stops before Moscow were ALL very interesting and worthwhile: 2 were Unesco sites. If you don't like icons, this tour might not be for you. We saw a lot of them. Moscow was very interesting. Very clean with lots of new construction. Modern buildings going up everywhere. Take advantage of all the museum tours. My favorite was the Kremlin Armory where the state treasures (including crown jewels are kept. The boat was very nice. The food was fabulous. The staff was amazing. The 3 Russian guides were excellent: friendly, knowledgable, wonderful senses of humor. One consideration: be prepared to do a lot of small tipping for bus drivers and local guides (100 to 200 rubles). Book now! Read Less

This is my 5th Viking cruise and I must say that it was the best in every aspect. the service was unbelievable with a marvelous group of very friendly and helpful employees. Wilhem, the hotel manager, was a marvelous host at all times. He gave each and everyone of us personal service and attention throughout the journey. The tours were all very good with excellent guides everywhere we went. The food was outstanding also. The entertainment was quite good in the sky lounge. I consider the best of all of the shows was the folklore show in Moscow. Fantastic. The worst was the Cosaks dancers and singers in St. Petersburg. The set up of the stage and seating was terrible. The color, décor and sound was dreadful. I hate to say this, but I don't think that this event room was not a good idea. My suggestion to Viking is that the ship should be docked closer to town. It was a long trip everytime we went to town on tour because of the heavy traffic and we were advised by the locals not to go out at night in that area of town. There is no where to walk around or eat nearby. Read Less
