This was our first Viking cruise and my husband is not a lover of cruises. By the end he was a fan. I can't emphasize the great service enough. Everyone from cabin stewards to the maintance crew you might meet in the hall was friendly and helpful. The food was very good. Meet and Mingle: Since we only had 6 people for this meeting, we were invited into a private dining room off Manfredi's for dinner with two members of the crew. It was really a great dinner. The food at Manfredi's is good and the crew members were lots of fun. Restaurants: We really liked Manfredi's and The Restaurant. I was disappointed in the Chef's Table both in the food and the service. The Mexican menu was OK, the Scandinavian meal was not good at all. Although we had the Silver Drink Package, alternative wines were not offered when we declined a wine we didn't like. Pay attention to the advertised menu as that is all that will be available. In the other restaurants the staff always wanted to find what you wanted. We found the World Cafe to be a bit crowded and tended to not use it. Sandwiches (try the philly cheesesteak) at the pool cafe were good and that area isn't usually crowded. We used Room Service on mornings of excursions and was pleased. Mamsen's was good for a late breakfast. At The Restaurant you will be asked if you want a table for just your party or if you want to share. I encourage you to ask to share as we met many interesting people. Excursions: We really liked the Pulpit Rock Cruise. The boat ride was beautiful with several stops along the way and a stop for some delicious waffles on the way back. I would do that one again. The Flam Railway, although expensive and a long day, was well worth taking. I tried to find a way to book the railway separate from Viking but was unable to do it. The trip was very good. We Had lunch at a hotel restaurant on the way back and the food there was just fair. I'm glad to have taken the excursion but wouldnt repeat it. In Oslo we did the included tour and then, on our own, visited the Viking Ship Museum and the Nobel Peace Center. Dont miss the Nobel Peace Center! In Copenhagen we did the included tour and then walked around the city by ourselves. In both citied, you can easily see what you want without a tour. We didn't go into Berlin as we had been there for several days earlier in the month. Those that did go complained lots about the long hot train ride and seeing very little of the city. Be aware that you spend most of the day traveling. For the most part, we heard many compliments on added excursions from those who took them. Other than Berlin, I didn't hear any complaints. The included tours were mostly an overall view of the area. By the end, most of them seemed alike. My advice is to take them if you aren't taking an optional tour. We only had one bad experience where the tour guide was terrible and the a/c on the bus wasn't working. Others had great tour guides and were short enough to not feel as if you had lost the entire day. Many of the smaller ports begin to feel alike by the end of the cruise. Silver Drink Package: I really went back and forth and finally bought this the week before sailing. Although we don't drink lots, I didn't want to think about the cost everytime I ordered a drink. I would definitely buy it again. We were able to try lots of wines off the wine menu at meals (except at Chef's Table) and were able to specify what brands we wanted when we had a night cap. Before we left I saw a drink brand menu and didn't see Maker's Mark, our favorite brand. However, Maker's was there as well as several other brands not listed. Try Beluga vodka if you haven't already done so. It was a new brand for us but very good. The best coffee is at the Bar on Deck 1. Cabin: We had a PV1 cabin on deck 6. It was very roomy and had all ammenities we could ask for. I loved the heated bathroom floor. We used the balcony quite often. I might consider a less expensive cabin on a future trip but would try to get the highest deck possible. I suspect all cabins are very comfortable. I had though the alcohol in the mini fridge might be worth the upgrade but we never used it. Note that you don't need electrical adaptors. Before the cruise I had read complaints of not enough storage. We had plenty and didnt even use some of the drawers in the cabin. Laundry: I have had a laundry package on another cruise and missed it on Viking. However, twice we took laundry down the hall and it really was no problem. Sometimes the laundry with only 3 washers and dryers can get crowded. Entertainment: We went to several shows and really enjoyed them. However, Lorile's piano playing in the Living Room and other venues may have been our favorite. At night you will enjoy strings, piano, etc in many of the public areas. We found it better to tune in to port talks on the tv rather than live. We went to one "expert talk" and found it terrible. The others could have been good but we never went back. Overall: The trip was excellent. Even with over 900 guests, the ship really never felt crowded (other than the buffet at certain times). I will mention that the guests were an older crowd. I'm 66 and felt very young! We found many couples in our age group and enjoyed meeting many new folks but there were certainly a large number of older and less able folks on the ship. One thing to note is although thre was a staff member available to book another cruise there was absolutely no pressure to do so. You had to go to her office to do so and never felt any pressure to book. I will take another Viking trip in the future. Read Less

The opportunity to visit Scandinavian countries through an ocean cruise. This was our first Viking cruise. The entire staff was very friendly, courteous, and helpful to us. We also appreciated the very helpful assistance from Viking employees who met us at the Copenhagen Airport when we arrived after our long overseas flight. The meals were delicious. The nightly entertainment was top-notch. We enjoyed each of the daily tours in Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Norway. All of the tours were expertly managed. We enjoyed each one of the ports of call. We learned a great deal through our tours. We enjoyed the two swimming pools and the recreational amenties provided on board the ship. Everyone on the ship made us feel welcome, and they were genuinely interested in making sure that we were enjoying the cruise at all times. We also appreciated the assistance which Viking gave to us at the end of the tour in Bergen, Norway. Viking employees took us to the Airport and helped us deposit our luggage with the SAS personnel. We like cruising because it can take us to a lot of different places in a very short period of time, all the while bringing our hotel and restaurant along with us. This cruise was of interest to us because it did a little wandering around before taking us to Norway where we had never been. We enjoyed the variety of interesting experiences we had in Denmark, then Germany, then back to Denmark, over to Sweden and then up to Norway. Viking does a terrific job. We had previously taken two of their river cruises and had high expectations for this cruise. We enjoyed everything about this cruise and are now looking forward to our next Viking cruise. We cannot say enough about the Viking staff. We should note, however, that because our focus is on the shore experiences, we didn't go to any entertainment, enrichment and other onboard evening activities. (The fact that there are no sea days on this cruise was not a problem for us.) As it happened, we met another couple on the cruise and wound up spending a long time at dinner with them, so that by the time we finished we had to get to bed to get ready for the following day. Regarding the various ports of call, having spent a couple of days in Copenhagen previously, we opted on the first full day for the Fredriksborg and Kronborg Castle excursion, which was very interesting. The second day, having been fortunate to have made several trips to Berlin previously, we were able to pass on the Berlin excursions and instead opted to visit Lubeck and Wismar. The third day, we took the included walking excursion around Aalborg, a delightful Danish town. The fourth day, we liked Gothenberg but unfortunately the city seemed to be in the midst of a massive urban makeover which made getting around the city extremely difficult. The fifth and sixth days in Oslo were delightful. We took the included excursion on the morning of the fifth day and went on our own on the ferry over to Museum Island to see the Fram Museum. The sixth day, we vegged out, limiting our sightseeing to the very interesting Akershus Fortress (which was right next to our ship) and nearby Norweigian Resistance Museum. (We would love to go back to Oslo as there is so much more to see there.) The weather was not the best on the seventh day when we were in Kristiansand; we did a little walking around on our own and took the included excursion in the afternoon. On the eighth day, we opted for the cruise to Pulpit Rock, which was wonderful. In the afternoon, we walked around Stavanger, which was frankly much more interesting than Kristiansand (but, then, the weather was so much better). The ninth day we sailed up the long, long Hardangerfjord to Eidfjord. If you want a tip, make a point of getting up early like this reviewer did and watch the ship sail up the fjord. Just glorious, if the weather is good as it was for us. (At four in the morning, this reviewer pretty much had the public areas of the ship to himself -- which was very sad, given what passenger might have seen.) We opted for the all day excursion, which was very enjoyable, notwithstanding the rain in the afternoon. But, in hindsight, this reviewer wonders whether an all day boat excursion around the Hardangerfjord might have been preferable. The last full day was in Bergen, which was predictably rainy in the morning but tolerable in the afternoon for exploring. Read Less

My mom booked this cruise with friends and I was lucky enough to join them! I have been on many cruises with Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival and Costa but Viking blows them all out of the water. Definitely an older crowd, no kids or casino but the food, service and amenities were so far beyond anything I have ever experienced! The itinerary of Majestic Fjords and Vibrant Cities was also fantastic. I would definitely do the cruise itinerary and ship again. Take the tour of the ship at the beginning - learned a lot about what was available on the ship and lots of hidden gems. Reservations for the specialty restaurants were easily made and the Chef's Table was amazing! They put our group of 8 in the private dining room a couple times and that was wonderful. Also, don't miss the waffle at Mamsen's in the Viking Lounge with brown cheese, sour cream and fruit for breakfast. The tea in the Wintergarden was great but too close to dinner for all the food that we had!!! We did a couple of the optional excursions (biking and food/fjord tours) and they were also fantastic. The group excursions were never bigger than 30 people and very manageable. Read Less

Everything about this cruise was wonderful. Exploring Copenhagen before departure was fun. Viking made the embarkation simple (we were done in fifteen minutes), and the on board experience (comfortable and roomy cabin, lively entertainment, room and dining service, etc.) was exceptional. The daily talks (both live and recorded for viewing on television in our cabin) about the following day's port of call ( the history of the town and area, the lay of the land, local currency, weather, and all the included and optional tours) made the shore excursions more interesting and rewarding. Disembarkation for the excursions were handled smoothly so there was no confusion as to where to go and what to bring. The local guides were extremely knowledgeable and were always conscious of our comfort and safety. The cruise up the fjord was breathtaking. What more can I say. We loved it so much that we've already signed up for two more cruises! Read Less

Seeing the Scandinavian countries was pure delight, from Copenhagen, to the train tour over the highlands of Sweden back to Oslo. It was a perfect journey! From the very beginning of our Viking experience, we had excellent service. Airport transfers to our pre and post-excursion hotels were smooth and perfect. Hotels were well selected, with very nice rooms, centrally located in walking distance to many cultural activities. All the staff were SO hospitable, from servers, housekeeping staff, security, to musicians and bartenders. It was a totally wonderful trip from start to finish. Our land excursions were handled VERY efficiently, and gave us an excellent sense of where we were visiting. The tour leaders were local hosts, which gave us a very personal view of their town, and were able to answer questions about all manner of local topics, from gardens and business histories, to taxation and local issues. We look forward to our next Viking journey! Read Less

We have cruised 3 times in the past 2 years with Azamara (twice) & Seabourn and have thoroughly enjoyed all the cruises. We prefer smaller ships and we decided to cruise the Baltic with Viking due to the excellent reviews and Which star rating. The Good points The transfer from Copenhagen Airport to the ship was excellent. Viking representatives met us in the baggage hall and escorted us to the awaiting coaches, porters assisted us with the luggage. We were soon on our way to the ship. The check in at the cruise terminal was very quick, the best we have experienced, within minutes we were on the Sky with a glass of fiz in hand and 30 mins later we were in our cabin with all of our luggage. The ship is beautiful, the interior design is exceptional with light wood and relaxing furniture in abundance. The cabin bathrooms are well equipped with an excellent shower and fog free mirror, I know people complain about the lack of cupboard space but we were fine. The cabin attendants were great and were very polite and there were some excellent members of waiting staff. The entertainment was good, the shows, the musicians, we loved the pianist. The food at the buffet was generally good. The disembarkation was painless and well managed. The Bad (or not so good) points The service in the restaurants was at best adequate but more often absolutely dreadful. Wrong orders, painfully slow service and queues to get a table. Table allocation was unfair, the same people seemed to get the best tables. We eventually complained about this and were allocated a window seat on the last night. The food wasn't great and certainly not special. I recall the scallop main course which goes down as the smallest main course I have ever received!!!!! The food & service at Manfredis was no better. The service at the buffet was often erratic with no one taking responsibility for tables. It took forever in bars to order a drink and even longer to get them. I kept asking myself Do They Have Enough Staff ?..... They say they do but our experience indicated otherwise. The TV's in the cabins are slow to respond and have a poor picture. In simple terms the ship is beautiful but the service is awful. I had great expectations about cruising with Viking but I will stick with Azamara & Seabourn and consider Saga, Oceania and Regent. This was the first Viking Cruise we have taken, previously having sailed with Disney. The whole ship exudes quality both from the quality of furnishings, food and crew. The transfer arrangements went smoothly and without hitch. We had a starboard cabin on deck 5 (5053) which had everything we needed and exceeded the quality of Disney product. The self service restaurant was where we had breakfast and lunch and food and choice were excellent. Evenings we are in The Restaurant which was waiter service and had the most wonderful server in Sophia - a credit to Viking, in our view. The food was well presented and delicious. One night we ate in Manfredis which was Italian specialty and delicious. We didn’t visit the Chefs Table but did lunch a couple of times in Madsens, the Scandinavian restaurant which was excellent. My only criticism was that some guests seemed to get to eat in Manfredis regularly and there should be limitations so that everyone can benefit! I have to say that the entertainment team were awesome led by Cruise Director Bevin, no mean singer in his own right either. His assistant Brian Rodriguez had an amazing voice and the vocalists Dan, Becky, Maddy and Damien performed shows each night that would not have disgraced the West End and backed by a terrific band. The crew from Capt Olav downwards were friendly and could not do enough for us. Special mention for Olex our barman as well. Shore excursions lived up to Vikings cultural enrichment theme and were well organised. We have already booked our next cruise whilst onboard! Read Less

I would like to comment on the excellent experience we had with my wife at Viking Sky. Before leaving, we had apprehensions regarding entertainment on board and the age of the passengers. We are not young (58 and 46 years old) but we knew that the average age was higher. The truth is that although the average age is higher, it was very nice for us to be on the boat without children or teenagers, without a casino, without photographers, without sellers of trinkets. the shows were of quality, the conferences very interesting, the first level gym, the extraordinary spa, the fantastic living rooms to read, the swimming pools with sun loungers available, the exceptional food both in the buffet and in the restaurant, always, and I insist, always with tables available for dinner, breakfast and dinners. This is our 15th cruise and we have used MCS, Costa, Royal, Azamara, Princess and Celebrity, and from all of the above we can say that Viking has been our best experience and best quality price ratio. If you want to travel to Russia the right way, do it with Viking Cruises. Viking took exemplary care of their guests, ensuring that all of us were in good hands throughout our stay in St. Petersburg. Once you get past the brilliantly-designed ship, the fantastic food and the enriching lectures - it all boils down to the destination. And Viking makes sure that the destination shines. They have the most brilliant and hard-working shore excursion team, complemented by an amazing on-board team. I still can’t get over the impeccable design, the attention to detail in every way possible, and the attentiveness of the staff and crew. Quite simply put: this is a “no-brainer” - book a Viking Ocean Cruise ASAP. Here are some quick tips: Dining While everyone raves about Mandredi’s, I thought the real star of the ship was The Chef’s Table. It offers a 5-course chef’s tasting menu, and the menu revolves on a nightly basis. The best one was The Scandinavian Bistro. It was delicious! If you are timing your reservation correctly, choose the evening that serves that theme. When making reservations on myvikingjourney.com pre-departure, they will tell you the theme for the night. The Restaurant was also fabulous. Make sure to order from the Destination Menu - it was always delicious. And make sure to try the Chairman’s poached salmon - absolutely yum. Saving the best for last - my absolute fave: Mumsen’s. I are there almost everyday. Try the following: the waffles, open faced sandwiches (the best was the liver, bacon and mushroom sandwich - OMG!). Service Fantastic! Friendly, timely and personal. The best example of this was in St. Petersburg where the officers personally made sure every passenger successfully made it through immigration - leaving and returning. I felt totally cared for. My only suggestion for improvement is for the upper class cabins (Penthouse Junior Suites) to have a Personal Concierge. That would have been fabulous. Cabins Gorgeous, beautiful interiors! Nothing to fault with the cabins. I love the heated floors. Shore Excursions Best Shore Excursion team in the high seas!! That team took such good care of everyone. Top notch, hard-working team. Special shout out to Alaina, Therena and Geraldine - these ladies were incredible. I still think they should make Alaina’s St. Petersburg port talk the permanent video in the port talk library. She was so funny! Entertainment Small but mighty team. Beven (Cruise Director) was wonderful and you can tell he loved entertaining us. The shows were small but the talent packed a punch. Incredible performers! Word of warning: once you go on a Viking Cruise, you’ll never want to try another cruise line. Be prepared for the best cruising experience of your life. My score: 9.5 / 10. We have previously taken two Uniworld River Cruises. We chose Uniworld because Viking salespeople were too aggressive for our tastes. Uniworld offers no Ocean cruises so, with some trepidation, we signed on for the Viking Baltic Sea cruise. The fact that Viking advertises so extensively, and that the ship accommodates so many more people than a river boat, led us to expect a less pleasant experience. All our fears proved totally groundless. The entire experience, from arrival to departure was marvelous. We were met at the airport by numerous Viking representatives who helped us navigate recovery of luggage and getting on the bus to the ship. Our room (Penthouse Veranda) was beautiful, spacious and comfortable. Service on board the ship was spectacularly good. There seemed to be as many employees, all willing to help, as there were passengers. Every public space was immaculately clean, and our room was kept this way by the housekeeping staff. The ship was so large that at no time did we feel crowded. There were many restaurants, all very good, and we never had difficulty finding a table for two, which we preferred. On several occasions we ordered breakfast via room service. It was excellent and delivered precisely when ordered. The ship offered many opportunities to attend educational lectures, and evening entertainment was well attuned to an older audience (e,g,, Beatles retrospective, Broadway show tunes). The performers were first-rate. Additionally, there were cocktail hour musicians who were delightful. One of the most impressive things about the cruise was the level of organization. Every evening we were provided with a schedule for the next day. All departures for excursions were so well executed that one had a sense of being on a much smaller cruise. All but one of the excursions were of high quality, and the staff clearly anticipated the incompetence of the one poor local guide by sending an additional person to encourage him to tell us about sights. Sadly, that didn't help. We would venture a guess that this local guide won't be used again. All the other local guides were quite good. Finally, the departure of 900 people from the ship at the end of the cruise was conducted masterfully. Bottom line: The cruise was far better than we had anticipated. The time spent on the ship was even more enjoyable than on the smaller river cruises we have taken. We are already planning a second Viking ocean cruise. Read Less

My wife and I are both senior and retired and this was our first and only cruise so far. We certainly chose the best, everything about our Viking cruise was top notch. Embarkation was a breeze, very efficient with our bags delivered to our cabin in a very timely manner while we enjoyed welcome drinks served by really friendly crew members. Our cabin was very comfortable and well equipped. Room service and laundry facilities were excellent. We enjoyed some absolutely fabulous meals; the Cuisine in the several restaurants was par excellence. We enjoyed the daily musical entertainment in the atrium, sometimes provided by a delightful young lady on piano and at other times a female duet on Cello and violin. Onboard entertainment was really well presented; we particularly enjoyed the Beatles and Abba evenings. The onshore excursions were really well chosen and organised just perfectly. Our onshore guides were extremely knowledgeable, really friendly and most had a great sense of humour. The Hermitage was a stand out highlight for us, but then again the whole St Petersburg experience was just excellent. Thank you Viking! Read Less

Also enjoyed the spa amenities and fitness center to get some exercise on the at sea days on board ship. It was a good balance to work off the calories from the excellent specialty restaurants and World Cafe buffet that also freshly prepared daily special entrees to order. On Board enrichment lectures, cooking class and tour of kitchen with Chef, classical musicians, pianist in the Grand Lobby and at tea time in the Wintergarden, variety shows and entertainment by resident and visiting entertainers in the Show Room was fabulous. It was our first cruise, and this experience made us cruise lovers! Viking Cruise is all-inclusive cruise line, so our cruise was quite comfortable, but level of luxury was not too much. It is suitable for people who like to enjoy not luxurious floating but exploring. You can have enough time to see around at each port, ports were sometimes a bit far from city center though. (Especially in St.Petersburg, there was no public transportation around the port, and it took more than 30 minutes from the port to the city by car. I personally took VISA and stayed at a hotel for two nights, and it was a good decision.) I stayed Deluxe Veranda Stateroom. It seems to be smaller than other luxurious cruise lines one, but it was enough. My husband and I often went out to see entertainment and play board games in public area, so we didn't stay at cabin for so long. Although we were actually much younger than other guests, we could enjoy the most of their entertainment programs. So overall was excellent. If I say one downside, it would be excursion. We joined walk and guide tour in Copenhagen, because all guests can apply one free excursion at each port. It was OK, but quite orthodox. I recommend that you explore on your own or pay for tours. Each night offered a variety of professional entertainers. Activities during the day were very informative, well educated speakers and relevant to the area visiting. Viking is not "world class cruising". I've had better service, amenities and food on carnival, norwegian and princess lines. I have never heard the word "no' so many times on a vacation. Their website displayed gym equipment on the sky that was not there: is there a spin upright bike? "no". I paid for premium alcohol because their free house wine is chilean. Do you have a ca cabernet or chardonnay? "no", a french bordeaux, no, and oregon pinot nior? -no. Champagne? Not included. Their "premium" wines are from south africa and australia. Is the main dining hall "the restaurant" open for a sit down lunch? - no - just buffet or burgers and hot dogs by the pool. At the italian restaurant manfredi's do you have linguine? - no just spaghetti. Meal times are short - the dining hall opens late and closes early. Nothing for breakfast but bread and coffee after 9;30 - even the buffet closed. Room service gets orders wrong. Excursions are rushed, no time to use a bathroom or shop and then waste time on promoting local businesses like herring tastings. It was obvious a lot of the staff was being trained and new (probably because they lost traumatized crew members after march 2019 "incident") every time i was getting over being annoyed at one lie, refused request, or misinformation there was another. The manager interrupted our breakfast asking me to take time to talk to her at her desk any time. I go down to her desk 20 minutes later, she is too busy, come back later. I never saw her again. The worst by far was our last full day in port in bergen. They couldn't wait until i left the next day to set the room for the next guests. I was shooed off my private balcony by the staff who came barging in to wash it - and even worse. I find a set of sheets in my previously filled dresser drawers. The maid came into my room while i was not there, opened my drawers and found one partial empty and filled it with a new set of clean linens for the next quest. I wasn't checking out until 9 am the next day!! It was still my room, my drawers, and a stranger was rummaging through them!!! You can't trust them. What is promised on their website is not on the boat: the amenities, the dining options, the drink options all not what is described in the website. Lies, refusals, misinformation and no apologies or anything to make up for it. You can't even trust them to keep you safe. 2 nights of rough seas throughout the night was unnerving because of the "incident" which is the word the crew used to describe the previous captain of the sky sailing into a horrible storm causing air lift evacuations. They had 3 ship accidents in 3 months 3/2019-6/2019. They are the worst cruise line in the industry. My recommendation is tauck. Tauck is world class cruising and the costs include everything so the same price. Don't risk your life or your vacation on viking. Read Less

We like to immerse ourselves in a few different cultures per trip. We like to take advantage of excursions, as well as exploring on our won and eating locally. The excursions were a mixed bag-some were very good, others were lacking. Mu husband is hard of hearing and it would be nice if the listening devices were blue tooth compatible. We think the the guest service representatives should be better informed re: each area we visit to assist with highlights and directions. Overall, the food selection and quality was above average and we were satisfied, except for the specialty restaurants which we found disappointing. The wait staff and bar tenders offered excellent service. Overall, we were very impressed with the boat and the services offered on it. We especially liked the free laundrey facilities and free WiFi. We were disappointed with our post trip experience and that no one from Viking seemed interested in our constructive criticisms and suggestions. Read Less

Great service from Viking during planning stages. Air departure had a problem due to equipment and weather. Viking was able to reroute us in about 20 minutes and we arrived in Copenhagen only about an hour later than originally scheduled. We spent a couple extra days in Copenhagen before our departure and really enjoyed the touring of the city. Boarding the Viking Sky went very smoothly and our cabin was just as described in the cruise brochure. Dining was a great experience with very attentive staff that provided excellent service throughout the cruise. The food choices for dinner were varied and delicious. Shore excursions, both included and those with extra costs, were excellent and informative. The tour guides provided incite into the local culture and history of the sights we were seeing. Overall our experience was excellent and we will definitely recommend Viking Ocean Cruises to our friends. We will be planning additional cruises on Viking. Thank you for such a great cruise. We chose the cruise because we wanted to see the fjords and enjoy some of the cities. Everything was excellent. Even though we booked our own airfare and arrived 2-3 days before the cruise began, Viking staff were there at the airport, recognized the tags on our bags, and were extremely helpful. This was true throughout: everything was extremely well organized; we felt very well taken care of throughout. It was great not having to worry about any logistics. Information about activities, embarkation, etc. was very clear, delivered to the rooms. The cruise was rather sedate, which is exactly what we wanted. On a prior cruise we took, the loud speaker was always interrupting our peace, mostly trying to get us to gamble or spend money on something. We liked the fact that everything was included; we did what we felt like when we felt like it. I actually enjoyed the books that were scattered on shelves throughout the ship: I read an wonderful collection of short stories by Gabriel Garcia Marquez that I never would have encountered else where. Food was excellent; service excellent; ship was beautiful but not ornate--very Nordic in aesthetic, which we liked. Cabin was comfortable--bed was so comfortable that we realized we needed to replace our bed at home. Every detail of the cabin was well thought out. The excursions overall were great: we felt a bit rushed in one or two of them, but overall their timing and rhythm were good, the guides very knowledgeable. We did explore Copenhagen before the cruise, which was great. It's a beautiful, interesting city, so it was great to explore it ahead of time. We plan to do that again on our next cruise. We also had time for a quick visit with relatives in Sweden. On the return, we also extended the visit one day--also a good idea. The only thing that didn't work was the trip to Berlin: we spent so much time on the train back and forth, and in comparison had relatively so little time in the city that it wasn't worth the trouble. And part of what I actually loved is being on the water. But that was just a very minor part of a wonderful experience. I almost forgot: the on-board entertainment each evening was wonderful--highly professional, lots of fun; and one evening, in an exception to the usual genre, Viking brought on board the most extraordinary Norwegian violinist--came on stage totally deadpan, no personality, and then "blew the roof off" with his brilliant playing. Now that was an experience!!! So all, totally wonderful, and we're looking forward to taking our second Viking cruise this summer. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was a place that we had not been to before and we really did want to see the fjords. Embarkation and disembarkation all went very smoothly. Viking lived up to its usual high standards with impeccable service, great excursions and wonderful food. I required vegetarian food which was prepared for me by the excellent team of chefs. The only thing that wasn't very good was the weather but Viking can hardly be blamed for that! The shows were very good. The Viking Sky is a great ship with so much space. You hardly realise that there are nine hundred passengers on board. There is always somewhere to sit quietly and relax. A definite plus was having someone to lead a religious service on a Sunday. I cannot rate the crew highly enough - totally dedicated and competent. They cannot do enough for the passengers. Read Less

This was our 4th Viking Ocean cruise and it pains me to only give the Orion a 4 star review. The Orion is definitely NOT an example of the Viking Ocean quality we have experienced on past cruises. Many new cruisers we talked to said they would not sail Viking again. Viking did a terrible job with communication. Our cruise documents stated we were sailing out of Yokohama, we sailed out of Tokyo Bay which created problems for those who booked hotels in Yokohama. Apparently due to the cruise being advertised as 23 days (it was 22 days) many had flights out of Vancouver the day after we arrived, plus Viking didn't have a berth for the ship so they offloaded our baggage in the middle of the night and then anchored in Vancouver Harbor. We had to tender for disembarkation. It was not as bad as it could have been but the next cruise pax were not allowed to board until 5:30 pm. that evening. FOOD: Manfredi's: food was sub par at best with entrees being so overcooked they were mostly inedible. The service was absolutely terrible. We ate there three times and cancelled our 4th reservation. Chef's Table: We had 4 meals there and most were excellent (didn't like the California one). The service was superior. For a 22 day cruise there were only 6 different menus so the choices were minimal. World Cafe: Eggs benedict under warming lights, no longer cooked to order. Omelette station nice, but the wait, long. The selection for both breakfast and lunch was tedious with most entrees tasting the same. All curries tasted alike. Sandwiched were no longer made to order. Main complaint however was the service with most waiters really not knowing what to do. At most breakfasts and lunches we were not offered beverages until our meal was almost finished. Restaurant: Most meals very good with a good selection to choose from. We would have liked to see some local offerings like Alaska Salmon, since we were in Alaska but none was offered. The service here was very spotty, some nights excellent, some nights not. In general most supervisors in the different restaurants seemed untrained and lazy, not really seeing the problems. Entertainment: Very good Port Talks: OK Enrichment: Very Good Cabin Stewards: Excellent Embarkation: Very good Disembarkation: Tenders Excursions: Nothing exceptional, except for expensive optional tours, mostly which were good. Planetarium: Interesting but a bit over hyped. Explorer's Lounger: Excellent servers We have signed up for another Viking Ocean Cruise so haven't given up on Viking. We just feel the crew in general needed more direction and training. Read Less

Based on our cruising experiences with Viking, we expected another great cruise. They did not disappoint! However, we specifically chose this cruise because of the itinerary. Number one destination for us was St. Petersburg so the fact that Viking offered us three full days there "sealed the deal." In addition our other two highly desired ports were Copenhagen and Tallinn. The Viking Jupiter is the newest having just started sailing this Spring. It is a beautiful ship. There are so many great spaces...the reading nooks, the pool area with pool grill, the theater, the spa, etc. And it never felt crowded! Last year we cruised the Mediterranean on the Viking Star and loved our cabin and its location on the same level as the pool, tea garden, World Café, and Explorer's Lounge. So we had the same cabin # on the Jupiter. We ate most of dinner meals in the World Café. The quality is outstanding and the service is wonderful. And again, never seemed overcrowded. We did eat a couple of meals in The Restaurant but just preferred to dine at our own pace since the food in the World Café was top-notch. The staff is outstanding, too. We commented often as to their friendliness and "going the extra mile." Another plus with Viking is the inclusion of a comprehensive shore excursion at each port. We always had a positive experience and it was only in St. Petersburg that we booked our own tour with a local guide. We have already booked our next cruise with Viking! Read Less

Jupiter is a brand new ship. We chose a veranda penthouse cabin which was very spacious. Traveling on the Jupiter was extremely easy. Embarkment was flawless and disembarkation was also flawless. Our three nights in St. Petersburg were great. Highly recommend the metro excursion and Hermitage Behind the Scenes excursions. Very port was terrific from Copenhagen to Stockholm. We arrived a day early to enjoy Copenhagen and stayed two extra nights in Stockholm. Thoroughly enjoyed the pool grill for lunch, The Restaurant for breakfast and dinner, Mamsem’s for breakfast and Manfredi’s for dinner. Variety and preparation of food is outstanding. Explore’s lounge was our favorite place to relax prior to dinner. Lectures covered a wide range of topics. Entertainment was excellent too. The silver package for a variety of wines and cocktails was a great value. Our cabin was cleaned twice a day. The housekeeping staff was terrific. This was our first Ocean Cruise and we look forward to traveling on the Viking line in the future. Highly recommend this cruise. Read Less

Having traveled with Viking before, I knew the experience would not disappoint. Since the cruise stops included places we wanted to visit it made sense to book Viking again. From the moment we arrived on board we were treated with smiles and professionalism. Lunch was offered. while we waited for our cabins to be ready. There were so many choices and everything I ate was delicious. The cabin was well organized. Our personal cabin staff showed us how everything worked . There were washers and dryers on each floor unless you were fortunate to have your laundry included. The two speciality restaurants had incredible offerings as did the restaurants that didn’t need special reservations. The spa pool and the different spa experiences were fun. There is also a covered pool and a small infinity pool. You could do as little or as much as you wanted. The smaller number of people on the Viking ships allows you to enjoy without crowds. It’s an experience that will be repeated. Read Less
