Cruise Critic's review of the Nieuw Amsterdam is overrated.

Review for a Caribbean - All Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

After good experiences on the Westerdam we decided to try the Nieuw Amsterdam. Cabin service was average. Dining service was not good, top to bottom. Menu was not outstanding. One night I asked for "just a dish of chocolate ice cream" for desert. The answer from our waiter was; It's not on the menu so order something off the menu. What?? Every day the man sitting next to me ordered a vodka ...

Review for a Caribbean - Eastern Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

I had always wanted to do a cruise, but couldn't find a partner in crime with whom to travel. I started dating a gentleman who was able to go, so after just a few short months of dating, we booked the cruise. I figured it would be an easy way to figure out if he and I were going to make the long haul (spoiler alert: we did not, but I'm glad). The embarkation was easy, though we had upgraded to ...

A Delightful December Cruise on the Westerdam

We are experienced cruisers having traveled frequently on Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and the now defunct Majesty Cruise Line. We were always curious about Holland America so we finally took a trip aboard the Dec. 13, 2014, 7-day Eastern Caribbean sailing of the MS Westerdam, out of Fort Lauderdale. Reviews of the Westerdam seemed variable and confusing so we were anxious to find our own ...

A cruise to relax, but to relax too much, I guess

Review for a Caribbean - Western Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

Hello. What we were looking this time... A last minute deal cruise, with good food, in a relaxing environment. What we got... An incredible good rate, excellent food, and an environment that was maybe too relaxing for what we were used to (for not saying a bit boring). We're not into the frenzy/craziness of Carnival, but we found Holland America to be too passive for us (we're in our 40s). Most of ...

I have just completed the Christmas / New Year 20 day South America and Antarctica cruise aboard the Zaandam with my wife and two daughters ages 10 and 14. What a trip!! Firstly on board the Zaandam:- Excellent, friendly and attentive service. Special mention to Imbuh and Tatang (our Cabin Staff). Christina our Cruise Director was the absolute professional. Friendly and approachable. Jeremy ...

My now wife and I did our honeymoon on the Zandaam and had an absolutely wonderful time! To start out with, we are both young. I turned 30 thirty two days before we got on this boat. When we got there, we noticed that the AARP would highly recommend this boat as it was 90% over the age of 60. That's fine though, as we realize that Holland America is the "old people" brand and one of the reasons we ...

Best bet for the Price: Sailing in the Caribbean with HAL

Review for a Caribbean - Eastern Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

In a Nutshell: The elegant MS Nieuw Amsterdam is a ship designed for this decade. It reflects how cruise ships have evolved from a medium of transportation to a hospitality vessel. The seven day Eastern Caribbean “holiday” cruise exceeded expectations. HAL is working hard to keep up with the competition, trying to appeal to the budget cruiser who is looking for a bargain. The food in the main ...

Embarkation was good although we were not introduced to our cabin stewards until a couple of days into the cruise. Beds comfortable and pillows excellent. No drawers in the stateroom to unpoack small items into so do not understand why there is a lidded BOX in the room instead. A chest of drawers could be put in place of this wasted item. The elevators were plentiful and always working. The ...

We have cruised HAL many times. After this cruise we both noted that service and shipboard life have slipped. Embarkation was good....lines moved, on board and into our balcony cabin in no time. We had been on the Noordam once before and she is in good shape. Learned that she is going into drydock in February for an update...wish i checked on that prior to booking. But the ship was clean. Things ...

Happy New Year Fellow Cruisers! I have never written a review before, although I certainly have read many of them, so please forgive me if I don't use the proper term or structure here. We have been on many, many cruises through the years starting in 1963 on a four day voyage from Miami to Nassau to Freeport on the old SS Florida. Since we are retired and live in Naples, Fl, we are fortunate to ...
