We cruised on this ship when it was the Destiny and had a great experience. This was the total opposite. Let me first say that our cruise director Mikey was AMAZING. I’d sail with him as CD again any day, he went above and beyond. Pros: JiJi Restaurant was wonderful! Make sure to try the pork belly, pot stickers, and the wide noodles. This is family style dining so everyone gets to try each dish. Service was amazing! Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse is a must! Our top choices were the smoked oysters, essence of tomato shots from the chef, and of course the ribeye. Great service & great food. Cons: This is the first cruise I’ve ever been on that most of the staff were rude or just plain ignored passengers. We normally tip very well, but walked off this ship without tipping above those already billed. The lido buffet was AWFUL! The only thing we ate in there was breakfast 3 times and two salads for lunch. Same bland, greasy, over cooked food every day. Not sure what was going on with the elevators but they were slow and most of the time blew by your floor. Waited more than five minutes several times. Maybe the elevator problem had something to do with children allowed to play in the elevators. An example, we entered an elevator with a approx 12 year old boy sitting in the floor eating an ice cream cone. The boy was laughing at the fact he had pushed all the buttons and was just riding up and down. His buddy was doing the same in the adjacent elevator. Want a deck chair? Better get up at 5 am to reserve one. Staff were allowing passengers to hold chairs by placing their belongings there for hours at a time. Want peace on the Serenity deck? Better find a better place, like front row center at a heavy metal concert. No where to sit, loud, kids running around. I think Carnival really missed the mark when the started doing away with the aft adults only pool areas. Did I say the staff? We had Your Time Dining, one side of the dining room was pleasant and the other actually gave me a dirty look. The bright spot was Nestor and his team including Jennifer who never stopped smiling. I’d give the other wait staff’s name that gave me a dirty look but he never gave us his name & didn’t spend enough time at our table to notice his name tag. We did enjoy our room steward but the cabin aft deck 7 had an odd amount of dust everywhere. Also we had a mildew smell in our cabin that seemed to be coming from the drain. Read Less

We sailed on the Sunshine in June 2018 and we enjoyed the ship so much, that when we returned home we booked a New Year's Eve cruise on her. Even chose the same cabin. I don't want to be redundant, so I won't repeat everything from my review of our June cruise, but I do want to let everyone who hasn't sailed on the Sunshine know that the negative reviews I have read are way off the mark. The ship is clean and the crew is wonderful. Always cheerful and helpful. This cruise was just my wife and me, no kids, and we had an absolute blast. We have our own way of cruising, so maybe our opinion doesn't apply to everyone. First, we rarely visit the main dining room...ever. It just takes too long for us, no matter the food or service. We did enjoy the steak house very much. We went on the first night for the free bottle of wine. We highly recommend JiJi's Asian Kitchen. Outstanding food. Also Bonsai Sushi. Guy's burgers of course, and the pizza was great. The lines moved along, no long wait. Buffet was very good when we tried it. Not everything is perfect, never is, but when I read reviews that say "it's always cold" or "it's inedible" I just have to laugh. Simply isn't true. The Alchemy bar is our favorite bar, great bartenders. The Havana Bar too. Helpful hint: You can order great coffee drinks here and avoid the lines at Java Blue. New Year's Eve at sea was so cool, definite bucket list. Kissing my baby at midnight while the ship blows its horn was unforgetable. Then dancing on the Lido deck with 3000 of my best friends. Awesome experience! Missing Amber Cove on January 1st due to high winds was a bit of a let down, but I never heard anyone complain, or saw any fighting over deck chairs (we were poolside when the announcement was made about Amber Cove). It is what it is, don't let it ruin your day. We decided to take a nap (a little hungover). We didn't go on this cruise for the ports anyway. Grand Turk is always fun. Walked the beach to Jack's Shack for a few drinks and a swim. Then back up to the Whales Tale for one more cocktail. (maybe two) Finally, a shout out to Mikey, one of the best CDs on any ship, anywhere. Always a pleasure. Also to Agus, our room steward, and Parviz at the Alchemy Bar. Thanks guys, you all helped make our vacation fun and relaxing. And to all the nitpicky, negative Nells out there....um, never mind, why bother. Read Less

This ship reminds me of a six year old mini van. It will get you there and back but it has no style, grace or wow factor. After a 100+ cruises I believe I have a decent idea of what to expect. This review takes a quick, broad view. You can have a poor meal or cabin steward on a great ship and a great meal etc on a poor ship, it is the overall experience that counts. Ship-Is old, worn (not dirty) and poorly designed. It therefore feels cramped and crowded. It doesn't have the style/grace of some older ships or the wow of some newer ones. On the up side all the public restrooms I visited were very clean. On the down badly worn carpet, pealing wall paper and just a general look of heavy use deter from experience. Our sliding door would not lock and we had high winds for a day, this resulted in a high pitch squeal in the cabin. The adult area is large, away from the kids area and overall nice. The one main pool is a mess. Had an incident on one sea day that they had to close the pool, One pool and it was closed, great! Three hot tubs and one of those closed as well. Just overall a poorly designed ship. Overall below average. Food- Better then expected, small servings, but you can always get two. Interesting the MDR was better then expected and the upcharge one's were below expectations. Much better then a recent RCL cruise and on par with a recent NCL. The lack of staff in the upcharge locations was troubling. Overall above expectations. Staff-The ones we dealt with were good, but there are not enough. Every position, bars, dining, room stewards etc were under staffed. Carnival has cut back to the point that it is a continuing problem. We did have several problems with the photo department, including closing a portrait location while we were in line to get pictures. Overall above average, just not enough. Entertainment- I though it was good, but it fit my style. I like Disco and one of the shows did this very well, not so much if you are a county fan. Hate to even comment on it because it is so based on everyone's tastes. Overall above expectations. Getting on and off were ok, again crowded. The cabin keys are now on the ship in your room. Saves time and works well. Overall Average. Chances are I would not rebook this ship, but if you have dates or ports that this is the only option (as we did) then it will work. Read Less

We chose this ship because we wanted a New Years cruise. First, I will start with the good. Embarkation was very fast. Mikey, the cruise director tried his best but was letdown from the Vista, which we sailed on last year. Our dining room staff Eric; Carlos and Iketut were incredible and fun. Now the bad. We were supposed to dock in the Dominican Republic but were not able to land due to weather, nothing Carnival could do but disappointing when we were ready for 2 ports. However, there were there did not appear to be any alternative plans made in case we couldn’t dock. The buffet menu was almost same everyday. Staff on ship just looked miserable and many were just rude. We went to walk on the track but apparently during the day it’s not possible because the track path is covered in loungers forcing you to walk through the games area, interrupting the games. The photographers were horrible. Normally we have too many pictures to choose from but the bulk of these pictures went in the bin. The New Years pictures had the words chopped off or parts of our bodies missing. Also for the Veteran Appreciation we took a group picture and were then charged for it. Way to appreciate us. The staff in Pixels Gallery couldn’t have been more unaccomodating and rude if they tried. Having the pictures sent digitally as they were on The Vista would have been better. They were available on the hub so you could see them almost immediately. There were activities that were cancelled and we had no idea until we sat there for a while. Finally, a curfew should be enacted. There were children running around well past midnight. We also had a domestic fight that we had to call security for. Other than that we did enjoy the company of the other cruisers. They were definitely a friendly and fun bunch. Ship could use some remodeling and updating Read Less

Overcrowded ship, not enough employees, long waits for food at dinner (6:00 seating), food quality in dining room noticeably lower than all my past cruises. Our cruise director made too many loud and annoying announcements. He interrupted the poolside movie twice and it took over 20 minutes for anyone to turn it back on (and it did not start in the right place). No one seemed to notice it had turned off until guests went and told someone. Room dusty and no robes in cabin anymore. Room service (sandwiches, etc.) no longer free. Evening stage shows noticeably worse than in years past. No lobster on elegant night (unless we paid $20 per person). Lobster has been a part of all the other cruise elegant nights we have attended. I couldn't believe how far downhill Carnival had gone since my last cruise 2 years ago. This was our 6th cruise together (16 people), and it was unanimously and by far the worst with many disappointments each and every day. There were never enough lounge chairs (fights and yelling broke out on board on the pool deck on the day that we couldn't stop at Amber Cove and had an unexpected "fun" day at sea). Once the announcement that we wouldn't visit Amber Cove was made, people were running and grabbing chairs out of the chair stacks, fighting over them ,and even bringing the chairs off their balconies just to have a place to sit. In the stateroom, the sofa "bed" for the third person was an absolute joke. A mattress, longer than the small sofa, was placed on top of the loveseat size sofa, and the overhang of the mattress was supported by a pillow on the floor. The bed was not suitable for an adult and we were not warned that it would be this short. Carnival, please provide better service and stop cutting amenities. Your longtime customers notice every cut. If you continue to cut corners and cut costs by serving low quality food and reducing amenities, I believe you will see a downturn in the type of clientele you attract. Read Less

Service personnel is great. Every day there was a SEWER SMELL that was OVERWHELMING near the elevators on your way up to eat. Was disgusting. Staff was very attentive. Entertainment was on a high school level as far as talent. Nothing like other ships we have been on in the past. Debarkment was ridiculous. We were asked several times to leave our room from 8:30-9:15 yet only one floor was asked to leave the ship. We had nowhere to wait and then stood in line from the elevators to the exit of the ship for TWO HOURS! Get your stuff together Carnival. That was absolutely the most unorganized cruise I have ever tried to get off of. Never again with that cruise line. No signs or help to shuttles. Another hour and a half of waiting in line with no directions and CLEARLY short staff. The best people in debarkment were the porters!! Food same every day. Spend your money on a better ship. 3rd time cruising on the Carnival Sunshine, picked this itinerary as it fits our schedules perfectly and we've gotten used to spending Christmas in the warm weather. We had an aft extended balcony cabin on Deck 7. We often ate at the specialty restaurants and also had late dining. Didn't use the buffet, but it looked fine at a passing glance, had a couple of pizzas - they were OK too. Staff were great with the exception of a bartender at the Alchemy Bar (first time I have ever made an official complaint on a cruise ship and this includes all cruise lines we've traveled on). Ports of call were fine, sometimes it's nice to get off the ship and other times it's nice to stay on board. We cruise to relax and somewhat go off the "grid" but there was plenty to do. We managed to entertain ourselves quite nicely throughout the entire cruise - they call them "fun" ships for a reason. Weather was warm, the beverages were cold and the service was excellent - seriously what more could you ask for. We've booked on Carnival Magic for next Christmas. Read Less

We booked our cruise last minute, and did not expect much, just to relax and get somewhere warm.. However this cruise proved to be one of our best so far ( 6th cruise) We had an oceanview cabin which was actually very spacious, for the 3 of us. The overall layout if the ship made it easy to navigate and get places fairly easy. The Serenity deck is absolutely fantastic. Food was better at the Lido buffet than the sit down restaurant, but the Mongolian and Sushi were great and worth the extra cost. Mickey, the cruise director was fun and energetic and made up for the average shows:). The shore excursions were great, especially Grand Turk Beach with lunch - unforgettable... Overall, even though nothing on this ship was “WOW”.. it had a pleasant atmosphere, great people, good service, and for the $ , it was truly a great cruise. Would definitely book again!! Read Less

I compare this cruise to past adventures on Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC which we love. I blocked out any negative reviews regarding Carnival and ended up loving this cruise. Here is the real lowdown on the Carnival Sunshine. Let’s start with the things I loved. CABIN-The location of our spa room 11030 was amazing. It was steps from the waterfall and the all adults serenity deck. The size of the room was perfect and had down to the water views from the balcony .Access to the spa relaxation room and steam rooms made this room category a great choice. Make sure that you book high floors on this ship. I will explain later. Our very friendly room steward, Dhimas stocked our room with all of the beverages and items we ordered prior to the trip. He also kept the ice flowing. Loved him. He kept that room clean and ready for us. We had no trouble getting around the ship once we found out that you can walk the entire length of the ship on deck 5. That allowed us to always find elevators to our cabin on the 11th floor. FOOD-While the buffet is small and nothing to write home about when compared to other ships we’ve sailed, Carnival offers additional restaurants for breakfast and lunch like Guy’s Fieri’s Burgers and the taco/burrito Blue Iguana Cantina spots as well as the Asian/Italian , MDR and pizza area of the buffet. We never made it to Bonsai sushi which we know would have been great. The food was simply awesome! The specialty JiJi’s Asian and the Cucina Del Capitano were terrific. I am still dreaming about lamb chops and short ribs and a NY strip that was so tender. I am also still craving that rose crème brulet and the melting chocolate cake with the ice cream. The waiters and waitresses dance and sing at dinner every night. That is wayyyy beyond the call of duty but neat to see. If you sail this ship please note all options for breakfast on your hub app. Walk through the very limited main buffet to JiJi’s Asian and the Cucina Del Capitano Italian in the AM to get to wonderful omelette stations. They also open for free lunch also. Most don’t know that they are there for breakfast and lunch. Also try the breakfast burritos and tacos at Blue Iguana Cantina on the deck and there is also a small breakfast served on deck five near the coffee shop. And those Guy Fieri burgers and fries are amazing. We never tried the steakhouse but loved the steak in the main dining room at no extra charge. FRIENDLY PEOPLE-. We made a ton of friends on this cruise. The passengers were comfortable, having fun and willing to share with you unlike other cruises. Mikey the Cruise Director is worth mentioning. I have never met the Director on any ship except this one. He made sure that he reached out , shook our hands and checked on us. We don’t where he gets soooo much energy but we hope they are paying him well! He kept the fun going on this ship. PORTS-We visited Grand Turk, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten and St. Kitts. Getting on and off the ship was fast and problem free. No tenders! Yeah! We loved our ports. St. Kitts requires an excursion. It can be a sketchy port beyond the shops. That turned into a relaxing day back on the ship. All the others were enjoyable with no booked excursions. Grand Turk and St. Maarten have great beaches right off of the ship. We found a beach in Puerto Rico that we walked to near the Fort. So now for the things that certainly didn’t kill our trip but were in our opinion, areas for improvement. We also heard other passengers complain about these particular areas which make them worth mentioning. POOR CONNECTIVITY-Internet is horrible and nonexistent on this ship. I repeat nonexistent! No one is in the fifth floor internet café because there really isn’t available internet with a plan or not .I paid for a plan as well as my husband. It never worked on my Apple 8. He seemed to have text capabilities and facetime on his Apple 7 plus. I asked for a full refund for my portion and received one. We had to search for internet in the ports to post pics etc. You really have to disconnect from the world on this ship. The Carnival HUB app was helpful and provided activity information in a flash with or without the internet plan. That app seemed to be the only thing that worked on my phone. Royal Caribbean has the best internet hands down. Business travelers would be in trouble on this ship. BAD SMELLS AT TIMES-We smelled sewage with deodorizer smells on the 5th floor on down to 3rd which is unfortunate because the dining room is on those floors. We weren’t sure if they were from bathrooms or some other area. I used the ladies bathroom near the MDR and didn’t smell it in there so the source was something else. They must resolve that issue. That’s not appetizing when you are headed for dinner on the same floor and I couldn’t stay in a room with that. Some guests had that issue. Booking a high floor gets you away from this issue. Some also complained about old urine smells near the toilet in cabin bathrooms. We experienced that too. I believe that this is due to the age of this ship. I usually Lysol clean the bathroom anyway when I arrive. Yes, the casino was smokey but aren’t they all? I wish they could vent it somehow or ban smoking there. I still managed to play slots and enjoy that area. PIXELS PHOTO GALLERY- The picture Pixels gallery was confusing. We never found some pics. They throw up pics in no real order and you must search for your faces through hundreds of photos. Who has hours to do that? Norwegian has solved that issue by computerizing the photos and grouping them by room number. They take your picture and attach it to your room number. You can see them all on a screen with no major hunt. We bought no pictures on this ship. It was too frustrating to find them all. ENTERTAINMENT-Entertainment was so-so! Djs on the Lido deck were good. I cracked up at the sailaway party. They had it but we were delayed in sailing away so it kinda fell flat this time. I know Carnival is known for its sailaway parties but the delay wasn’t their fault. I enjoyed the 70s Dance show and the Killer Beaz comedian. Other comedians were weak. We aren’t into audience participation shows and they were really into that. Motown show was messed up with the performers sitting on stools singing with bottles of water. They said a performer was ill and missing. The crew was talented but that was a weaker show. Other cruises have big themed costumed stage shows. The magician was weak too yet was interested in hawking his instructional dvds at the end of the show. Lounge bands were average. The shows kept us busy I suppose. Movies on the deck were more enjoyable or reading on my balcony. DÉCOR- This ship was built in 1996 and was refurbished in 2013. A lot of the neat restaurants were added at that time. The ship décor seemed 80ish to me and reminded me of an old Atlantic City or Vegas Casino .It is an older ship. They have done their best to keep her going. I prefer newer ships but the décor didn’t kill my cruise. It was ok. There was some rocking of the ship during our return due to rough surf. It was nothing serious and there were no signs of mechanical issues that some were still talking about from the listing incident some weeks ago. OVERALL IMPRESSION-The positives outweighed the negatives on this ship. We truly enjoyed our cruise , the spa amenities of the spa room category and the many ports. The food alone and great service would entice us to rebook on one of their newer ships. Carnival will definitely see us again. Read Less

My kids love taking a cruise at the holidays, so for 2018 we settled on Carnival Sunshine because of the itinerary. My older daughter read the book "The Cay" in school and wanted to see Curacao and my younger daughter loves Carnival's kids' activities, so it was an easy choice. We drove to Port Canaveral the morning of the cruise and parked with Lots of Honor, which was a very easy process. The staff there is super nice and it was much more reasonable than parking at the port. The shuttle was prompt and embarkation was super easy. The kids kept asking, "where is the line to get on the ship?" There was no line, we just kept walking and got right on after security. Fantastic. I was a little skeptical about this ship because of a lot of negative reviews here, but the onboard experience was pretty decent. Lido tended to get pretty crowded and it was hard to find a lounger to lay out in the sun. (LOTS of people trying to reserve them, it was a mess) Otherwise, none of the other public areas felt overly crowded or uncomfortable. During our days at sea, my 10 year old daughter spent the majority of her time at Camp Ocean and she LOVED it there. My 12 year old has hit the grumpy teenage years a bit early and refused to participate in any organized activities, but the preteen/teen areas looked very nice as well. There was often a weird sewage odor towards the aft of the ship by the kids' areas. I would say that the dining staff were absolutely the best staff on the ship. We ate at the main dining room with anytime dining most evenings (except formal/dressy night - none of us like to dress up) and the service was fantastic. We also went to the buffet and Guy's Burgers frequently and everyone was so friendly and helpful. The food was fine and typical of my other Carnival cruises. We booked cabin 3127 towards the front of the ship on the Lobby deck, as it was an "interior with picture window" for only a little bit more money than a standard interior. The kids like having a window, but I personally prefer the dark of interior cabins. The cabin itself was okay, but I would highly recommend against this location. We had a lot of noise from above us, even late at night some nights, and this particular cabin has a bench right outside of its window so people kept peeking into the room. Awkward! As far as shore excursions go, we did our own thing at each port. I typically don't book excursions through the ship. In Aruba, we booked through AGW Tours Aruba and did their Offroad Adventure Tour. My partner and I did the same tour in 2017 and enjoyed it, and it was just as fun with the kids the second time around. We were in port from 1 to 10 PM, so we showered off and did some shopping after our tour. In Curacao, we did another offroad nature tour with Curacao-Actief, and they were fantastic as always. In Grand Turk, we walked down the beach to Jack's Shack, played in the ocean, bought some conch fritters, and petted their dogs. Paradise. All in all, we had a really fun time on this cruise and I wouldn't hesitate to book on the Sunshine again if the kids were going with me. Read Less

Wanting to go to the southern Caribbean we choose this ship, big mistake, the food in the buffet was the same every day, looked very brown and greasy. Looking for peace and quite we retreated to the so called Serenity adults only retreat !,only to find that people were up at 7 am with there towels to reserve sun loungers !, there is a notice not to do this but still people reserved and some did not use them until well after 11am. There were also individuals with ghetto blasters and music systems blasting out noise most times we visited. I have problems to understand why this area is called Serenity when even music is belted out over the ships own speaker system. We cruised on Norwegian Epic last year and the serenity area there was truly quite. Abandoning the buffet we ate dinner in the restaurant on dekk 3, wonderful food and really exceptional friendly and attentive staff. The minus was the stench of sewage every day from the lift shafts leading to the lower decks, really overpowering and nauseating. Disembarkation was very inefficient it took over 2 hours after the 1st guests disembarked for us to get off the ship. Not recommended for anyone wanting peace and quiet. Read Less

Before you choose this ship, please do some reasearch first. My husband and I went on the Breeze in 2014 and LOVED it so we could not help by compare certain things the Breeze had that the Sunshine was lacking. The ship rocked the whole time, I don’t know if it was because of the water being a bit choppy or because of what happened in October. The layout didn’t bother me. Compared to other ships, the Sunshine only have 3 hot tubs total - two on the Lido deck and one in serenity, but serenity does have a pool - that was freezing cold. I agree with others that the serenity on the Sunshine is the best in the fleet. The public restrooms were very tight and only a few had extra room for a parent & kid or wheelchair. Cabin - We were in 6136 balcony and it did not have a fridge, my parents were on the 7th floor balcony and did have a fridge. Seems the fridge placement was just random. Our room steward Digno(?) was amazing. They do ask you when you would like your room cleaned - morning, night or both. Dining- The Buffett is not 24hrs, it opens at 6am then closes in between meals. On the last sea day, Pizza, Guys and the deli open at 5pm. There were huge lines at that time for dinner. I am not sure why they don’t open at 5pm instead. I got in the pizza line and ordered a pepperoni and cheese...waited at least 20min for the cheese while the crew member was making and baking other pizza’s for other guest. If you are a parent, you know your kids don’t have a whole lot of patience. We did eat at in the MDR for a few nights and as always that was great! Steward was attentive and we were very pleased with his service. We eat at the buffet and the food was good. Breakfast was the same each day. Lunch and dinner had a varity of choices. The Spa level room also came with spa products and the thermal spa-- not impressed had to ask several times for the spa products that were included with the room the spa had no whirlpool or plunge pool like other ship thermal spas. The spa level was not updated and did not feel like an upgrade from our other group's rooms on the other floors Service was good on the ship The cruise director Mikey was excellent best I had ever seen We had a great time Would NOT do the spa level on Carnival again it was a waste of money. We always choose a cruise that stops at Saint Martin so we can spend a great nude day at Club Orient. We live halfway between Port Everglades and Port Canaveral so there are plenty of cruises to choose from. We prefer Carnival because we feel we get the best value and we don't like those mega ships with 6,000 cruisers. We had a boarding time of 1:00 - 1:30. Boarding went smoothly and we were able to go straight to our cabin (8152) and stow our luggage - we get everything into a 22" carry-on and a 24" suitcase plus a backpack. We found that our balcony cabin was a little smaller than we've encountered on other Carnival ships - my wife could not sit at the dresser and apply her make-up due to the refrigerator being there. This was never a problem on other Carnival ships. Our cabin steward was great. I asked him to be sure we always had ice - and he did. The food was typical Carnival - not gourmet but good and there was always something on the menu that we found appealing - usually more than one item. We were in the forward dining room at table 157 for the early seating. Wait staff was very good. The shows were typical Carnival - entertaining. The adult comedy shows were very good. The atrium area was much smaller than on other ships and was often very crowded. Disembarkation was a disaster. We do self-disembarkation. We were waiting in the Lido restaurant waiting to disembark when our deck was called. It was very difficult to hear the announcements unless you were directly under the speakers. Decks 1 & 3 were called a little before 8 AM and nothing further was called. At about 8:45 we decided to leave and made our way down to deck 3 - our daughter was picking us up at 9. It was a mob scene - people had difficulty getting off of the elevators. When we finally moved it went smoothly until we got to the baggage area. We observed many people picking-up luggage and it was evident that they were not doing self-disembarkation as many of them were using porters for their luggage. There were only four customs agents on duty - took forever to get through. Read Less

I have almost 25 cruises under my belt, I have cruise the sunshine three times this year, I keep me coming back for more. I can’t get enough of the Motown celebration and Mardi Gras night to name a few. The entertainment staff is awesome they keeps you on the edge of your seat. The dining room staff are very attentive and appear eager to meet your needs, it is amazing that they can call you by name. Shout out to Mikey, one of the best cruise directors I have ever seen and the DJ aboard the ship was awesome. As we sailed away l observed all the passengers aboard The Royal Caribbean packed to one side of their ship, it looked like they were wishing they were aboard Carnival Sunshine, the Dj shouted out Who cares about how much noise we make, we’re out on the ocean and the song played “turn down for what “. The staff aboard the ship were awesome, in the dining area the Casino and house keeping. I'm currently planning to return to the Sunshine again in May 2019 and I have a back to back cruise planned for December 2019 aboard the Panorama out of Los Angeles. Any reason to go on cruise, is a good reason, as I continue on the hunt for more delightful times at sea! Read Less

Great get away just before the busy holiday season. MIkey the Cruise Director is fantastic. Keeps the crowds involved and entertained. Wonderful staff from top of the ship to bottom.Onboard entertainment was great so loved they get the audience interacting with the team. Bingo is getting more expensive with lower prizes. The food coming out at MDR could be warmer. Sometimes i got cool food so sent it back. Perhaps the Bartenders in Red frog pub deck 5 could know a little better english. I ordered a Rum Jumper when i signed the slip i saw i got a painkiller. We didnt order room service as we are pretty low key folks, but our friends did daily coffee and hot water came hot. Great selection of sweet rolls. As we have been to all the ports before we did not do any shore excurisions just got off and walked around the port area and enjoyed a few cold ones while the wifes shopped. Read Less

Firstly, our cabin was delightful. It was an inside one and our porter Daryl was excellent. We enjoyed (very expensive) bingo with Nicky the bingo pixie, and frequent piano sing alongs with Gilbert. Guys, you did a great job for pre-christmas cheer. We really enjoyed the songs sing along and father Christmas arrival in the atrium. The Christmas show in the liquid lounge was very good too. HOWEVER... what's on earth is going on with your food? Seriously, we were a family of 5 and almost all of our meals were served luke warm or cold...we gave up in the restaurants in the end. Even room service was messed up virtually every time we ordered. And in comparison to what we've experienced previously - you've got to get a grip on the food. What you are serving up is not a good as you might think and you are capable of much much better. Read Less

This was my first carnival cruise, so naturally, you can expect me to be critical. Many of my friends had boasted about the quality of CCL so I decided to give it a try. This cruise was planned for months and I put a great deal of research and learned most of the pros and cons prior to sailing. But once you actually experience it, then you'll know why people posted what they did. I normally sail NCL. SO.. with that said, here we go. I'll start off with my short pros. The room was absolutely wonderful. We were in 10102 which is a spa balcony. We absolutely LOVED the room. It was spacious and incredibly quiet. Our steward was great too. Another thing I loved was the PEOPLE! I made some pretty good lifelong friends on this cruise. Good people from all walks of life. The negatives.. from deck 9 down to deck 1, the aft of the ship smells like sewage. Some people said they could smell it in their rooms, others said they just grew used to it. No one should have to grow used to smelling poop when they are on vacation. The seas werent really that rough but in this ship, even on mild ships, YOU FEEL IT. I've never had to take meds for sea sickness but this time, I had to. The ship is old, although remodeled but she is old! In my opinion, she shouldn't make long voyages like that during that time of year. She was rocking left and right ALL THE TIME. Morning, noon, and night. It was awful. Let talk food. Specialty dining is great. End of story.. it's great. But personally, I dont go on a cruise so I have to feel obligated to dress up and eat at specialty dining. It's just my perspective. I was to go on vacation and be lazy. That includes going to the buffet and grabbing half decent food. That wasnt the case on the sunshine. The buffet has no real selection. It's bad.. like real bad. The bread/rolls are old, stale, and hard as rocks. There are also two sides of the buffet. Both sides serve the SAME thing. Now the food didnt ruin the cruise by no means, but it really took me by surprise. I guess you get what you pay for. I'll stick to NCL for having the best buffet, on my list. The spa.. yes.. the spa or lack of. Remember I said we had a spa room? Well let me tell ya.. dont waste your money on it. The spa is incredibly small. IMO not worth it. But I mean, when I compare it to NCLs spa, you can see why my expectations were just blown to bits. Entertainment was totally dated and boring. Carnival needs to update their shows. It was okay but not something I'd go watch again. Ship layout was AWFUL. You'll often find yourself getting turned around or seemingly in a dead end. But my favorite ship. Disembarkation was awful as well, but I was told later that was because of customs. So... understandable. Will I cruise carnival again? Yes. Because I want to give them another chance and cant base my final decision on just one CCL cruise. I've heard many good things about the horizon, so I'll try that next! But if I had to choose between NCL and CCL I'd always choose NCL. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was a premier cruise out of a port within our driving distance and fit our schedule. We had to use our credit from a cruise cancelled due to a hurricane before we lost it so this worked. We booked the International Palms hotel with parking and shuttle thru Go Port Canaveral. Won’t do that again... the hotel was in poor shape. After finding our room and settling in to watch TV I noticed fleas on my legs. We grabbed our stuff and went to the front desk to check out. They were rude and said we are pet friendly so what do you expect. When to the Hilton and they wer very sympathetic. Comped our parking for the week and upgraded us to a king suite for free. Arrived at our shuttle pick up at the requested time. After standing in a parking lot in the sun for over an hour, we gave up an took an Uber. Embarkation was a breeze. We’re platnum so that helps. Brought our things to the room and got our cards. We were greeted by housekeeping supervisor, he was very nice. Also got the first of many premier and platinum gifts. Then headed to the Havana bar for some food. Exploring the ship, she shows her age. But she has good bones. I would say the staff has seemed to not care so much about the details because of her age. They seem to be keeping up with the mechanical maintenance but there was a lot of areas the need cleaning. Our stateroom had popcorn kernels on the floor when we arrived. The balcony was gross, there was what appeared to be maybe ketchup smeared on the glass, what looked like a butt print on the glass, paint splatters all over the deck, and slimy scum collected in the gutter area below the glass. My wife put on socks and walked to the bathroom and back to the bed and they were filthy that quick. The public areas were in good shape as were the pool and serenity areas. The hot tubs were new and worked great. But we’re fullof children and I had to get security to remove a child wearing a diaper. I only used the serenity spa because of that. On sea days, people slept overnight in the loungers to reserve them for the day. Pathetic.. there were plenty of chairs around the pool. Now on to the food. First night we ate at the steakhouse. Free bottle of wine was nice. They offer a Wahlstrom beef option, the waiter suggested it was better than the filet. He was quite wrong, it was a basic flank steak and kind of tough. I ended up finishing my wife’s filet. Next night the MDR was average as expected. The prime rib was bland and cold, we also got lobster tail but one tail was gray and we chose not to eat it. There was a woman near us that complained about it as well. I would say the lobster was dead before it was processed and frozen. These gray lobster tails should have been caught in quality inspections AND also never should have been served. Very disappointing. Next we tried the Italian restaurant. Only a $15 upcharge and well worth it. Great staff and very cozy. Food was good. We also did Sushi one night and enjoyed it. Sea day brunch was nice except the first one we sat at our table without so much as a hello for 20 minutes until I went up to a supervisor and complained. Service was still quite slow even after that. The casino was pretty good. The host was great. I personally couldn’t win anything, however my wife did quite well. It wasn’t too smoky on this cruise, but as usual carnival does not follow its own policies related to smoking and there were always people hanging around smoking all around the casino while not playing any games. There was a pretty good variety of short excursions available, however we didn’t get the chance to book any. The Eastern Caribbean ports on this cruise we’re still in very bad shape from the hurricane damage. We probably will not choose to cruise the Eastern Caribbean again for quite some time due to this. Debarkation went well. We always use a Porter once we get off the ship. They take us right past all of the people waiting for customers to their own special line. We were outside in five minutes. We opted to take an Uber back to our car and that was great. We were on the road home by 9 o’clock in the mornin we always use a Porter once we get off the ship. They take us right past all of the people waiting for customers to their own special line. We were outside in five minutes. We opted to take an Uber back to our car and that was great. We were on the road home by 9 AM. All in all it was a pretty good cruise on a decent ship, we enjoyed ourselves and came home rested. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had not been to several of the stops before. The ship was very clean and the staff was attentive. Mikey the Cruise Director was fantastic and the best one we have seen in over 40 cruises - he never stopped interacting with the cruisers the whole 8 days. This was our first experience at a roll call event and were disappointed in the small turnout, but got to speak to several people. They took a group picture and everyone received it as a souvenier which was very nice. The shows were professional and well done. There were 4 different comedians on the cruise and some were much better than the others. The food was very good. We recommend downloading the HUB app for your smartphone as you can see the day's schedule and menues right there. The pool area was nice and lounges were usually available with no trouble. We would recommend this midsize ship to anyone. Read Less

Just got back and had a fantastic time! Somethings that I read and my thoughts on that: "Ship was rocking worse than others I have been on" It's a ship!! I personally love the motion and slept like a baby. However my wife and son were sick the first night. Again it's a ship in the middle of the ocean. We were running hard to make Aruba on time and taking 45 knots of wind across the bow. She was movin! "Food is poor" Everyone on our group (5 adults and 5 kids) loved the food "Dining was slow" We had my time dining and again with a large group of 10 that ate at a different time every night, we never felt it took too long. "Felt crowded" My understanding is our cruise was sold out. I never thought it felt crowded. Always managed to find enough deck chairs for our large group. We saw most of the shows and never had an issue with seats. "Entertainment was so so" I'm not a big show person, though others in the group are and felt the shows were very good. I did (as always) enjoy the love and marriage and quest shows. I enjoyed 2 of the 3 comedians, I didn't care for the magician. My personal thoughts: Onboarding was VERY smooth, no reason for Faster to Fun. Cabin steward was adequate and always provided what was needed though he had a very dry personality. The cabin itself was very clean and beds were very comfy! Shower pressure was surprisingly good. The ship just coming out of dry dock I thought would have had a little more spit and polish though it was clean and crew were always cleaning. It is an older ship. Water features were fun though the scoring system for the racing slides was not working. Slides are super fast! Guys burgers never disappoints, Pizza was ok, DELI was GREAT, Buffet was plentiful and dining room was good. Overall a very good value for the money and we had a fantastic vacation looking to book a future cruise!! Read Less

We had this cruise booked for many months. Weeks before sailing we heard on the news about the "tilt" on the Sunshine. We also had a friend who was on that specific sailing and told us not to cancel our trip, that he had a great time. I personally was very apprehensive about going because of the ship tilting. But we listened and took the cruise. For starts, embarkation was "FLAWLESS". We were on the ship within 10 minutes. Here are the specifics: THE CABIN: We got an interior cabin with a king sized bed deck 7. The bed was amazing!! I wish I could've taken it home, along with the pillows and the comforter. The space was adequate for two adults. Closet space was plenty, but there could've been more drawer space. And also we found that the bathroom was too small. But... we made it work. The water temp was perfect. The shower was amazing, the water felt great. Everything worked perfectly fine including the television which gave us movies and continuous information about the cruise and activities. ROOM STEWARDS: I can only tell you that the service provided by our room stewards was awesome. We had no complaints. They were accommodating and very friendly, kept our room spotless, and they knew our names anytime they saw us. FOOD/DINING ROOM: The service in the dining room was almost always fantastic, especially our server MADE pronounced MAH DAY. He was outstanding!! We had dinner there most nights and breakfast a few times. The food was fantastic. We had the "anytime seating" so we could go eat between 5:15 and 9:30 I believe for dinner. It's a great option if you can get it. We also tried the Lido buffet, which provided a lot of different foods, especially amazing desserts, but the food wasn't always hot enough, but it did not disappoint us. We tried Guys Burger Joint - AMAZING, of course the 24 hour pizza, which also was really good. Food is available at any time. We also tried room service and it was great. Make sure you leave a tip because it's not included in the gratuities from what I was told by Carnival staff over the phone. ENTERTAINMENT: I cannot say enough about our cruise director MIKEY!!! He was AMAZING! He definitely is the right person for the job. He knows how to make you smile. He is infectious and friendly and fun! I highly recommend the Punchline Comedy Club. We saw 3-4 comedians and they were all hilarious. We went to at least 6-7 shows. We did a few activities on board such as trivial pursuit and karaoke and they were a lot of fun. STAFF: Overall, the staff on the whole cruise were friendly and accommodating. We did not have one issue with anyone. THE SHIP: The ship itself was better than what we had heard. For an older ship in the fleet, which did undergo a renovation I believe in 2013, it was very nice. It was clean. The staff was constantly cleaning. The decor was fun and classy at the same time. I loved the hallways to the cabins. The cabin doors were really cool. There is so much to see and do on this ship. Food everywhere, shows, entertainment, fun, and if you're too pooped to party, go take a nap in the amazing beds they offer. Overall, a very nice ship. PORTS OF CALL: We stopped at Aruba, Curacao, and Grand Turk. We unfortunately were unable to do any shore excursions so we made the best of it and did stuff on our own. We enjoyed all the ports, but our favorite was Grand Turk. Aruba offers a lot of shopping and dining and the beaches are beautiful. We did take a bus to go to eat at Hard Rock Cafe, pricey but had the best chicken wings I've ever had, and the fare was reasonable. Unfortunately we had a mishap in Curacao with an ATM (be careful of those), it ate our card. But the crew in Curacao came to our rescue and got our card out of the ATM within 15 min of being notified. Curacao was nice. Offered shopping in a really nice part of town, upscale shops, a casino and a hotel and some places to eat. The town seemed very eclectic, and had a very pretty view of the city from the ship. Again kudos to the people who helped us out. But again Grand Turk was perfect. The beaches are right by the ship, the shops are nice, and there's a massive pool right by the beach. They're all within a small area and you can walk to all of them. My only advice: Be careful when walking the beach. There are men offering to rent you an umbrella and two lounge chairs. We paid $20, but ended up asking him to take the umbrella because we didn't need it, still same price. Then a couple came up behind us and got the same set up for $10. And another couple told us they were charged $30. If you do not need an umbrella, ask them what the price is. Do not accept what they offer if it seems high, especially if there are a lot of people already on the beach because in that case they are more desperate to rent and will take whatever you will offer it seemed. If you are one of the first on the beach, expect to pay more, but I saw people bargaining so do not let them rip you off. Overall, great ports! ACTIVITIES: There were a lot of different activities available throughout the day, ranging from swimming (get there early because the kids will take up the pool, and if you go on the serenity deck, there will be tons of adults in the pool there), fitness center, activities on deck like basketball, checkers, water works (great for kids), and our favorite was the dine in movies. Blockbuster movies shown on a massive screen on the Lido deck minutes from 24 hour pizza and ice cream. We saw movies like Mission Impossible: Fallout, Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, Skyscraper, Rampage. They offer blankets and popcorn. They offer two showings a day usually, two different movies. The shopping is fun as well. Multiple gift shops on board. LAUNDRY: They have, at least on the Sunshine, 3 decks with launderettes, 3 washing machines and 3 dryers. You use your sail n sign card to buy soap and to use the machines. Can get a bit pricey if you have a lot like we did for two adults. But at least they have it available, which I appreciated tremendously. DISEMBARKATION: Disembarkation was not as efficient as embarkation. I would say it took us about 45 minutes to get from the ship to out in the terminal with our luggage in hand. It moved a little slow, but it wasn't that bad. AGAIN, FEW NEGATIVES: Bathroom was small, not enough drawer space, a few spots on the ship it didn't feel air conditioned, like by the elevators, but everywhere else was fine, and the first few days the seas were a little bit rough but then it leveled out after day 3. TIPS: Take some sort of motion sickness medicine with you, even if you have never had it before. There were a few people who told us they never in their life had it, but did on this cruise. You never know. Be prepared just in case. Again, watch out for the men on the beaches renting the umbrellas and chairs. If you want to get to the pool or lounge chairs to lay out on the deck, get there early enough. They fill up fast. Make sure you have all your documents to embark. Most of all: Do not listen to all the comments you read on this site about how horrible this ship is. We read at least 5-6 reviews about the Sunshine and 98% of it wasn't true. You have to judge for yourself. OVERALL: This cruise was great. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed all that the Sunshine had to offer. The weather was great. We sailed in November and it was in the 80's in all the ports and had no rain. We would do this itinerary again and would sail on the Sunshine again. Thanks to all the staff on board and especially a shout out to MIKEY who made this cruise even better than it was! Read Less

Our favorite thing was happy hour at red frog haha. We did also enjoy the casino. The staff in there was super friendly. I made out ahead. The kids enjoyed the waterslides and waterworks area. The racer slides were really fast. We were surprised. The dinning room food was delicious every night. I will say the dream class ships are my favorite and I would most likely sail them before sailing the sunshine again. But it is a fantastic ship with a truly caring staff and cruise director.
