I actually booked this NYE trip while on Quantum (out of Shanghai) last NYE. Mariner is a very nice ship. I had cabin 9608, junior suite-port side. Very roomy cabin, largest closet I've seen on a ship yet (literally large enough for three adults to go into even after their clothes are hanging. Ship was clean, bar staff and guest services were amazing, as were the casino staff. Made stops in Kuala Lumpur (Port Klang), Penang, and Patong Beach at Phuket Thailand. Friendly SE Asian locales, good local food, and for my experiences not too pushy. I stayed busy enough with activities on the ship that I never made it to any of the shows. Largest single group on the ship were Malaysian, then probably Australian and Indian. Great mix of travelers. Embarkation went very smoothly. Chairs around the pool were not "saved" as I've typically seen throughout my cruise journeys. Read Less

The ship itself is fantastic, really big with plenty of room. Had a balcony room on deck 7 with a really big king size bed and plenty of room. Facilities and pools / spas were great. We choose this cruise to visit South East Asia and spend some time in Singapore plus we spent New Years Eve on the ship which was great. As we are from Australia we enjoyed the cruise with 362 other Aussies on Board. The rest of the passengers were mainly from China, Indonesia, Singapore, and India. We found the staff did not speak very good English and at times found it hard to understand but we did expect this. Service at the pool bar was very slow quite often with just 2 bar staff and heaps of people waiting for drinks. Really disappointed in the opening times for tea at the Windjammer Café, opening only from 6.30pm-9.00pm we only ate here once at night the other times we ate in the main dining room and tried Chops Grille one night which was fantastic. Kids club was just terrible my son aged almost 11 was put with 6-8 year olds combined and did not really want to be there except he made a Friend from Perth. No kids club the first night. Then new years eve they wanted the kids picked up by 10 and the last night they wanted them picked up early. The fitness instructor barely communicated and was really boring, felt I wasted $12.00 on a spin class as it was soooo boring, hardly any communication. The spa, gym, sauna and steam room however were the best I had visited on a cruise ship. Finally we were left with a sour taste about this ship as I believe my son got food poisoning on the last morning at breakfast from Chicken Sausages. He was fine that morning and we ate the same things at breakfast but he also had Chicken Sausages. By lunch time he was feeling sick and by the afternoon he was vomiting with stomach cramps. No one else in the family got sick - just disgusted in RC about this, as we had to spend the next 24 hours in a hotel room with a sick child. I really expected more from Royal Caribbean and felt disappointed in the end. Also Disembarkation took 40 minutes just to get out of a stair well while waiting to get off the ship. Read Less

Xmas cruise with adult family from Singapore for 5 days. Rooms next to each other, balcony doors could not be opened, doors stuck due to age of the ship. Balcony was roomy for 2, bathroom small, liked the shower door instead of a curtain. Cabin attendant very polite & helpful, cleaning our room while we were at breakfast. Dining, not great choices, lots of Asian more than Western food. Staff very helpful. Great to have towel art on our bed every night when we returned. No chocolate on our pillow. Lots of families on board with kids, we did not feel crowded and not one misbehaved child. Entertainment poor, mainly because it was only 5 days away. Ice show was fantastic.Adult area for pool was wonderful,a peaceful area to be in. Target market for this cruise seems to be Asian based. No Happy Hours, towards the end of the cruise they did bring out a small drinks package which was a good deal if you don't drink very much. Mini golf turf very worn, at one time there were no golf balls. Ports not much good, very confusing in Port Klang with a queue for taxis to take you to your destination, Did not do any excursions from the ship. Overall a lovely holiday, would I do it again on this ship, yes after it's re-furb later on this year. Read Less

First impressions were good. Check in and boarding were painless and quick. We found our state rooms easily and left our hand luggage. State rooms were surprisingly spacious, with space under the bed to adequately accommodate suitcase and two roll on cases. Wardrobe easily took our clothes, and had plenty of hangers. However found the bathrooms lack of toiletries irritating....in fact on use of shower found the soap/bath gel dispenser completely empty. Had to call housekeeping to come and fill up. You would think this should be checked on turnover. Shower was not very hot and had to call maintenance to look at it and rectify. Sink tap was practically impossible to turn on, just enough water flowed through to clean ones teeth. Balcony area needed refurbishment, paint was peeling off all areas. Our first visit to The windjammer buffet was a fiasco. Too many people, not enough space. In fact they opened the speciality restaurants to accommodate the number of people which converged on the buffet. A continuous announcement to vacate tables when finished was constantly played. Good choice of food as usual, but also chaotic. Not enough space to manoeuvre round the food islands. We therefore ate in the main dining room, which was a lot better, for breakfast. Dinner in the main dining room was good, but food was certainly way below par to previous cruise line we have been on. There was a choice each evening of Asian or European cuisine. We ate in Giovanni, the Italian speciality restaurant on Christmas night, which was good and service good too. Overall service was ok in all areas, although slow in some due to lack of staff ....Schooner bar a case in point, it took a while before ordered drinks were brought to the table. Entertainment....shows were terrible, musicians in bars good. Casino....busy but fine, not as varied slot machines as on other cruises but adequate. Overall cruise was fine for 5 day break over Christmas period, but was more geared up for the Chinese/eastern market. Surprisingly few Christmas festivities, was surprised by lack of. Admittedly ship was decorated for Christmas but felt more could be done for those celebrating this holiday period. Ports of call....Port Klang a waste of time, unless you had a ship tour booked you were not allowed off the ship. In any case the ship was docked at a cargo terminal so there was nothing to walk around if you had been allowed. Penang....docked right by Georgetown, an easy walk into town....well worth doing. Phuket....short tender ride to Patong.....worth doing, visit shops & restaurants along beach front, or visit the beach for a change. Read Less

We choose cruise for destinations and locales We looked forward to an exotic cruise with lots of new sites and sounds. The destinations were disappointing especially since the tours were very expense, misrepresented and very disappointing. Ac,tivities on the ship were underwhelming and poorly timed during meals or land days. Big focus was for passengers to upgrade and spend money. Drink packages, WiFi , speciality dining, Upgraded room service, Even water for tours. Very few Americans , focus was on Asian customers. Price for cruise very reasonable, but travel costs are very high to get there and cruise Is very short 5 Days. RCL felt like NCL in their focus of getting guests to spend money on all activities on and off the ship. They should be more like their sister brand Celebrity to make the cruise more enjoyable. Nice cabin but engine nosies in Jr Suites make nights very uncomfortable. Food mediocre. Upgrade for a steak at dinner????? Rethink the brand...... Read Less

We chose this cruise as a follow up to a Caribbean cruise we took about a year ago with another cruise line. That cruise was a major hit with our two children and this prompted us to go on another cruise with them in a different part of the world. Relatively this was cruise was a major disappointment with respect to the activities for the children- which were non-existent in their respective age categories. Dining at the Windjammer was also a problem, where it seemed like it was always a problem to get table for the family. I attribute this to a cultural difference in the cruise passengers. The largely oriental clientele of this cruise tended to linger excessively. The overall quality of the food was good but not great. Service was great, and the embarkation/ disembarkation process was relatively painless. The ports of call- Penang & Langkawi were very interesting and worthwhile, as was the visit to Singapore before & after the cruise was a highlight. The cruise had an ice show, which proved to be difficult to get in to see. It was a good show but we got in in with standing room only, after being turned away the first time. The other shows were nothing special. On a commercial note- we were put through unreasonable pain to obtain a refund the we were due. Overall we enjoyed our cruise but we will think twice before we take another cruise with Royal Caribbean. This company did not compare well in our eyes with their competitors. Read Less

The Foods served is quite average but customer services super. Dinner at Table 39 well served and attentive with super enjoyable services with smiles. Appreciate Ms Pan Lulu and one gentleman (didn't get his name - Philipino or Indonesian) Both are courteous and providing excellent customer services to make us comfortable though the menu/foods can be better. They offer to change plate of delicacy at all time and politely ensuring whether we are enjoying the main course, desserts etc. Enjoying the ice show, movies and the lounges for nice songs and drinks Casino average as too many smokers (as i am non-smoker) Loves the deck views - first time experiences with strong wind(s) but i enjoying the breezes, the sunset, sunrise - super nice and wonderful. Definitely will introduce friends and family as everything are perfectly managed and the last day of disco (Funs) singing and dancing with free champages provided Read Less

We had heard great reviews of the cruise but started to wonder when we received email reminders about boarding time without any indication of where to board. Also, the different email reminders quoted different closing times for boarding ranging from 2.30 to 3.30 pm. As I was working till 1 pm that day, the confusing information was rather unhelpful. Fortunately, onboard service proved to be great, and our suite was amazingly spacious and comfortable. We were very pleasantly surprised by how big and comfortable the sofa bed was when opened up. The bathroom was also very well designed with lots of counter space, even more than in most 5 star hotels we have visited. Our suite attendant Mr Ren was unfailingly attentive, pleasant and efficient. Dinner in the Dining Room was always very pleasant, and we appreciated the friendly services of Roland and Nicholas, with their great sense of humor and impressive knowledge. We also enjoyed the performances put up by the talented staff, truly multitasking as they dashed from serving dinner to sing and dance. The food itself was passable, but did not impress. It was thoughtful of the staff to open up Chop Grille premises for buffet breakfast, as it allowed us to enjoy breakfast in a tranquil setting. Breakfast was adequate, although I was horrified to find the orange juice diluted beyond recognition. Lunch at the Windjammer was rather crowded, and it was disappointing to find they had run out of ice water one day, leaving me to quench my thirst with strange tasting food juices. Can’t comment on activities and entertainment as I chose not to participate, preferring to spend time reading on the beautiful balcony of our room. Early checkout was a breeze, but it was fortuitous that I joined the queue early. Had been told to be there before 8 am, was surprised to find a short queue already forming at 7.20! Had a good time chilling out on this cruise. Read Less

We were coming back from a 2 week stay in Nepal, and the timing of the cruise out of Singapore was perfect. In addition, my wife and I always wanted to do a Asian cruise. this was our 9th Royal Caribbean cruise, and 3rd cruise on Mariner of the Seas. We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise, and the fact that it was a majority Chinese clientele made the cruise even more enjoyable, although the rudeness of some of the Chinese clientele (especially older Chinese ladies) sometimes tested our patience. Overall, however, I truly enjoyed talking to the Chinese that spoke English, and the fact that a majority of them have an adversion to sunbathing ,made this the absolutely best cruise ever for finding front row chairs at the pool, and a lack of people swimming in the pool The food was fairly average, but not bad in the main dining hall, and the Windjammer was quite good food. The excursions were the worst I have ever been on. The Penang excursion was changed from a bus tour of the island, to stopping by three different places for shopping. we got off the bus and took a taxi home, very disappointed and they only refunded 15% even though the y changed the excursion and did not let us know. That was totally bogus. The Phuket port was changed from the one very close to the main beaches to one that was about an hour away from Patong beaches, I learned about this change the night before reaching port on my own. It would have been nice for them to let us know, as the Phuket port literally has nothing interesting nearby. Overall, had a really good time, and the ports visited were fun. I would just suggest renting your own taxi for the day, and doing your own thing at both ports. Read Less
