This is one of the most beautiful islands on the planet, and very crowded in the summer. Visit here in May or September for best chance to avoid crowds. Also, this is a tender port, so I recommend you book the ship's excursion to avoid the line for the gondola. The excursion puts you on a bus that bypasses the gondola on the way up. Empty when you are the only ship in town, or chaos when three ships at tender. Oia can be easily done on the local bus. Akrotiri is well worth a visit on the local bus, for the sheer scale of the archaeological site (all under a roof) ...

The port area was so busy, it was hard to tell if people were in line for the cable car or something else, or if they were just lost trying to find their way around. I ...
Too busy! I appreciate that I was contributing to this, but the hoards of visitors are making it an unpleasant experience. And don’t get me started on the queue for the cable car……. ...
