They were a really happy crew and that was reflected in their work and service to their guests. The food was, as usual, magnificent and we met some lovely people along the way. Viking make sure there are alternative trips for all levels of fitness and ensured that no-one missed out. If you felt you didn't enjoy this cruise, then it would have been your own fault! Read Less

I have always resisted the idea of a cruise with 5000+ strangers, but the river cruises did attract my interest. The Viking Rhine River cruise was wonderful! Every aspect ... the staff, the guests (fewer than 200), the food, and the shore excursions ... were outstanding in every regard. The ship, the Viking Hlin, was quiet with no sounds of the engine thrumming; the staterooms were very comfortable and efficient in use of space and never felt crowded. But, the best parts were certainly the people: the staff just could not have been more helpful and professional, and they were genuine in their attention to each guest. A wonderful trip! Read Less

A Rhine River cruise had been on my bucket list for years so I had high expectations for this trip. Viking totally surpassed all of my expectations. I loved it so much I hated to get off the ship. I wanted to go for another 7 days. Of all the great things about the trip, I thing the very best was the customer service that we received through the entire trip. Having a small crew and less than 200 passengers gave us a cozy atmosphere with a crew that took great care of all of our needs. When we reached the city of Koblenz, I wanted to rent a car so that I could visit some of my ancestral home towns that were a half hour away. Well, the rental car agency closed early that day and we weren't docking until after noon time. The concierge got us a taxi that was waiting for us at the dock and they let us off as the 1st two passengers so that we could get to the taxi and the rental car agency. Through their efforts, I got the joy of visiting the tiny towns that my 2nd to 7th great grandparents were born and died in. We also loved the food and the tours (we took most of the optional tours too). I would highly recommend this cruise and can't wait to take another Viking cruise. Now I just have to decide which place to visit next! Read Less

Our needs were well attended to and the meals were lavish! The views from the ship were spectacular!!! The shore excursions were superb--especially enjoyed the small towns and Black Forest. The Mercedes Benz tour was incredible with all the robotics. Our crew was most pleasant. We enjoyed our visit to see the ship's operation and were delighted to see the Caterpillar engines since Cat headquarters are close to where we live. Would highly recommended this tour down the Rhine. The Hlin was practically brand new with all the latest gadgets and electronics. The computer area let us keep up with news back home. We sprung for the veranda but since there is so much room on the ship it really isn't needed although we enjoyed sitting outside each day. Read Less

Unfortunately, what should have been a great Rhine cruise was marred for over half the passengers on the Viking Hlin. Within two days of boarding the ship over 60 out of 188 passengers came down with gastroenteritis. The ship staff took virtually no measures to control the virus so it tore through the rest of the passengers in short order. Sick people were loaded onto tour buses with healthy ones, self-service buffets continued, and there was no systematic disinfection of handrails or shared furniture. To add insult to injury they didn't bother to obtain rehydration solution or antidiarrheal medication, even though they knew dozens of passengers were sick and local shops closed on the weekend. Handling of special diets was adequate, but not up to the high standards they claimed when I booked my ticket. Despite my telling them about my gluten-free/egg-free diet six weeks in advance, breakfast was a sad affair. There wasn't a single bread or cereal aboard I could eat; even the hash browns were made with eggs. I was completely left out of the two afternoon teas because the only gluten-free option was egg custard. If you don't have a special diet or mind a round of gastroenteritis with no medicine for relief, the rest of the cruise is to be recommended. Shore excursions are to carefully chosen sites, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The tour guides are somewhat variable in quality, but most are very good. I was only disappointed by one guide, who was intent on telling a particular story and glossed over what we were looking at. There are both included and optional tours, plus short walks into port cities lead by the conceirge. Be sure to consider the optional tours which go to interesting places and provide good value. Viking provides a transmitter/earpiece system so it's easy to hear all the narration. When the ship is cruising, there are slide shows in the afternoon, appealing spreads of local pastries, and music in the evening. The cabins are well appointed and the information on their website is spot-on. L'Occitane toiletries are a nice touch. The lounge is big and comfortable with floor-to-ceiling windows and plenty of seating. There is a rooftop sundeck as well, with plenty of lounge chairs and the option of sitting in the sun or the shade. Dining room tables seat either six or ten guests and lounge seating is in conversation groups. This is a good arrangement if you like to mingle and talk to other people on the ship. Mealtimes are fairly regimented if you want to enjoy the main menu; breakfast is the only meal with a fair amount of flexibility. Dinner was often later than I would have liked. We were typically seated at 7pm and not served until maybe 7:45. The late dinners combined with 8:30 am excursions meant I ended up a bit sleep-deprived. Because of the relatively small size of the ship there were typically only 3-4 selections for lunch and dinner, plus a menu of fixed options. The food was fresh and well-prepared. Wine is served with lunch and dinner. They serve the same complementary wine with all the meals the whole week. If you want something different there are some really nice wines for purchase on the wine list. Be aware with the Rhine cruises that the ones originating in Amsterdam are going upriver. That means more time on the water and less on shore excursions. Choose your direction by whether you like sitting on the sundeck and watching the river go by, or having more time to wander the local cities. There isn't a right or wrong answer; the cruises are just different. Read Less

We joined the cruise in Basel for a weeks cruise. The whole experience was far in excess of our expectations and definitely of high standards. The ships are well appointed, the cleaning staff are very pleasant, hard working and a delight to deal with. The barmen were attentive, with great sense of humours and their memories to our favourite drinks was impressive. I did find the main female bar member only favoured serving men so we found we had to wait a while sometimes. A bit annoying. The rooms are well set out - I do suggest you upgrade to having a separate lounge. We were traveling as 2 friends and had a twin bedroom so it was nice to have the extra room so we weren't tripping over each other. The single beds are very narrow, I nearly fell out each night but it would have been difficult to have any wider in the room. The bathrooms are super clean, the shower has great pressure and overall nicely designed. The amenities - soaps, shampoos etc are top quality and replaced each day if required. The only niggle was as the sun deck was directly above us we were woken by someone with thunder hooves doing their morning brisk, thumping power walk about 7.15am. Now that may not be early for some but hey we were on holiday and I didn't have to get up at my normal 6am start. The cruise mainly consists of people over 65-70. We are only in our late 40s but didn't find it a problem and most were a delight. The food was incredible, good menus, well presented and I loved the Villeroy and Boch cutlery and dinnerware, very tasteful. One day I overheard a women complaining there was just too much food .......... hello you don't have to eat or order everything! We gave up breakfast by the 2nd day, just didn't need it. Plus even if the desserts do look good - do you really really need it! The only time I faulted was the Banana ice cream and it was fabulous. If we were there for lunch we just had the casual lunch not the full blown a la carte menus. We would either take an excursion or go into a town where we were stopped for the day and have some local food rather than rushing back to the ship for the "free/included" lunch. We were concerned there is no kettle in the rooms for tea or coffee but there are coffee and tea stations just at the end of the corridor from the rooms and the coffee is good. We picked a couple of the excursions but used them mostly as a form of transport and did our own thing. We were "over" the castle/church trips having done that before. The 2 tours we enjoyed were the cheese factory tour (even though I've done ones before at home) and the Lindt Museum tour which we did on our own but I am a huge chocolate fan. The walking tour of Basel before we left the 1st port was very informative and we had a lovely guide. I found the internet connection was better in the rooms or below deck than up on the sun deck but overall better than I expected. The ships are very smooth, no engine noise at night and it was fasinating going through all the locks. It was a busy river with all the traffic and interesting watching all the different cargo boats. All in all I would highly recommend Viking after all they have won awards for service etc for 3 years running and I feel the awards are justly deserved. Read Less

This was by far the highlight of our month in Europe. We have never done a river cruise before, but we will certainly be traveling with Viking again! From the moment we stepped on board to the time we left the cruise in Basel, we were treated with respect, courtesy and friendly crew. Everyone was amazing and went out of their way to ensure all guests had a fabulous time. The shore tours were very well organized and executed. The guides were local to the area and passionate about their cities. We travelled in the midst of the heatwave and our comfort was taken into account every step of the way. We were in the 'cheap seats' as far as our accommodation was concerned, but we had no issues with engine noise or feeling cramped. The rooms were lovely and our steward was amazing! We ate in the restaurant most nights and became very friendly with a lovely couple from Mobile, Alabama. In fact, we still email each other weekly. The food was second to none, thanks to the amazing culinary skills of Mark Anthony. Our waiters, in particular Kyle, Branislav and Jerome were very attentive and super friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. If they could possibly cater to your requests, they would do so in a heartbeat. The entire trip was so well organized and the crew were incredible. I highly recommend the Viking Hlin to everyone!! Read Less

Lovely cruise on the newer Viking Hlin Longship from Basel to Amsterdam. Cabin was with a French Balcony (picture window with a bar across). Accommodation was just a bit smaller than the cabin on our Danube cruise on an Avalon ship a couple of years ago, but everything was top notch. Bathroom floor was heated, which was a nice touch. Food was okay some evenings and spectacular on others. Never bad. Breakfast was buffet with eggs and omelets and sausage as well as a selection of cereal, fruit, cheeses, etc. Dinner consisted of regional specialties, and always had a steak and fish choice. I don't drink alcohol, but my wife said the wine served at meals was adequate, nothing to write home about. Soft drinks and beer are also offered with the meals, but cost extra at other times. A few people purchased the drink package, but said unless you want to drink constantly all evening it was not worth it. Many purchased bottles in town and brought them back to their cabins. Some people complained that for the price they expected everything to be top shelf. As with any river cruise, it is like having a very nice hotel each night which moves to a different city while you sleep. The day-time cruise through the Rhine Valley with its spectacular castles and scenery is almost worth the entire trip. The included shore excursions (mostly walking tours - longer bus tour to the Black Forest and into Heidelberg) were excellent. The guides were very knowledgeable at each city. I especially enjoyed the WWII Colmar Pocket additional excursion and the visit to the Audie Murphy site. Plenty of free time to shop and explore or to have a meal in town on your own. We ate most lunches and couple of dinners in town and the ship's concierge was very helpful with recommendations. Traveled with a couple who have cruised extensively on ocean liners. We had warned them it was nothing like that, and they said they were happy they were forewarned. They are used to room service, nightclubs and entertainment like in Vegas, and he wanted a couple of days to just veg and relax on deck while the ship traveled down river. There are few times to sun on the deck while the ship travels, as the ship is in port most days, and of course no room service. Entertainment is local people ranging from classical music after dinner, to lederhosen-clad accordion players. There is a lot of walking and hiking. Not the type of trip for someone who wants to veg and relax on a chaise lounge. They do try to make accommodation by bus or van for those who cannot climb the many steps or make it on the cobblestone streets. We had a couple of passengers who unfortunately fell and injured themselves - one on ship, and two while on shore (one riding a bicycle). All in different cities. The ship's hotel manager and crew accompanied the two of them who needed to go to the hospital and stayed with them until they were treated and released. Be sure to have medical insurance which can cover your expenses, although all remarked how much less their treatment cost than if they had gone to an E.R. in the States. The other injured party refused to go to a clinic for treatment, but accepted the first-aid offered by the crew to treat her cut forehead. The crew are professional and accommodating. All speak English and the passengers were mostly from the States and Canada, with a few from the U.K and Australia. Average age was probably 60, but there were three or four couples in their 30s and 40s and two teenage young ladies traveling with their grandparents who were doted on and spoiled by all others. The prior week the ships could not get up to Basel because the river was too high to allow them under some of the bridges and the passengers were shuttled by bus down river to another ship, but we had no such difficulties. Be aware this is a risk during spring and into June. Extended each end. Two days in Lucerne which was wonderful (really recommend the Mt. Pilatus tour) but breathtakingly expensive. At the end spent two days in Amsterdam, and wish we had extended for an additional one or two days more. Loved the city and its museums. Viking handled all transfers and hotel arrangements without problem. Next time i will handle my own flights and hotel extensions, as I know I could have saved a few $100 if I had done so this time. Did so on our previous Danube trip. But by having Viking handle it we were saved the stress of arranging transportation to and from the airport. Read Less

As with our previous cruises we found the stateroom to be small but adequately appointed, the ship to be immaculately clean and comfortable, the crew, attentive and knowledgeable, food & wine delicious and plentiful, tours incomparable! In each port our tours were conducted by local guides who speak excellent English and shared their love and knowledge of the areas we were visiting. The coaches are all comfortable, immaculate and the drivers took great care of their passengers. On-board activities are always interesting and well presented. The tours each day in luxury buses were very well organized and fun, learned a lot about the culture and history of the countries we visited. All the folks were so nice! The meals were amazing! And many choices, the wine flowed freely, usually from the areas we traveled through. The only complaint we had, was that the ship had changed the location of embarkation and we weren't notified by e-mail until the night before. We had spent an extra day prior, in Amsterdam, and had not gotten the e-mail on our phones. So needless to say our poor cab driver had a difficult time finding the correct location for us to board. And there was a bit of a language barrior. We were't the only ones that day, that had this happen to them, but the ship graciously compensated us. And no harm was done. And we had started out in plenty of time that day to find our boat. So be sure to check your phones and emails to keep abreast of changes. Or have someone one at home do it for you. This was our first time with Viking. One thing that made the trip so enjoyable was that we didn't have to think or worry about getting where we needed to be. We booked air, pre and post stays. Being picked up at the airport made it less stressful, being in a foreign country and not worrying about directions, etc. We spent our pre in Lucerne, beautiful!! This also included a walking tour of the city. When we arrived in Basel there was also a walking tour. The cruise was so relaxing. Having a planned excursion in each stop allowed us to really see the cities we were in. One minor complaint would be the amount of time spent on a bus to get to some of the sights. To have some time to explore on our own in each city was also wonderful. The cabin was the perfect size for the two of us. I can honestly say we did not have a single meal that was not delicious. The only complaint would be some items were too salty, there were other travelers who said the same. We befriended some fellow travelers, England, Australia and fellow Americans, and had dinner together each night. The post was spent in Amsterdam, which included a walking tour. Just beware of the bicycle riders!! There were even Viking reps in the hotels to help navigate Lucerne and Amsterdam, with restaurant suggestions, places to see. We appreciated the way Viking arranged all aspects of our trip, from airport transfers, hotels, excursions. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we are booked for a Danube cruise next year. Read Less

This was a bucket-list cruise for me and I was not disappointed. We left for Amsterdam early and had two full days to spend there. We were amazed at the number of bicycles there (600,000) which made walking an adventure. We then boarded our ship, the Viking Hlin, and were personally escorted to our stateroom, which was very adequate regarding space and appointments. The best part was the spacious shower and bathroom area. The ship itself had a small library and computer area with Wi-Fi. I was born to eat and found the breakfast/lunch buffet to be excellent. The choices were well presented and very tasty. The scrambled eggs were the absolute best I have ever eaten ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. As for dinner, the choices were less than on an ocean cruise, but WAY BETTER. Very gourmet! The best part was there were only 184 passengers, compared to thousands on an ocean cruise. Having fewer guests and no loud music, made for a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. With no huge stage productions, the entertainment was another surprise....consisting of local talent from the various ports. I won't tell you about it, but you will be pleasantly surprised. Very classy! Regarding port and shore excursions, there was a tour of each city visited. Be prepared to walk! I walk with a cane, but found two walking sticks to be my salvation. We were broken into three groups, with the third being the "leisure" group. Some of the tours included a motor coach and one had a taxi. Regarding the crew, we found them to be more than eager to assist and make our time onboard pleasant. I would have to say that my favorite part of the trip was cruising down the middle Rhine and seeing all of the castles. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day to view them from the top deck. With all things considered, this (our first River cruise) was our absolute favorite cruise ever out of a total of eighteen. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, but not to worry. We left the ship in Basel and spent an extra two full days in Lucerne. It is a beautiful city, but very expensive. Would I do another Viking River Cruise? In a heartbeat. Well done VIKING! Read Less

Really enjoyed the cruise could not fault anything and thoroughly recommend this holiday to everyone. Especially like the way you can sit wherever you like for dinner thus meeting and mixing with more people. The food was excellent with a great variety of choice. We personally like the more relaxed dining of the buffet lunch on the sun deck and was pleased there was no dress code. The free drinks with meals also worked very well. The itinerary worked very well with just the right amount of time in each location particularly liked the microphone system which made it very easy for everyone to hear the guide and the fact that the groups were altered for each excursion thus helping you to mix with more people. The option of having half the day free in many locations also worked very well especially with bus transport to and from towns every half an hour. Also liked the fact that bottled water supplied as you left the ship and also the fact that hot drinks and biscuits were available at all times. The evening briefings and daily news sheets ensured that you did not miss anything. The staff were all very helpful and friendly, indeed nothing was too much trouble. The evening entertainment was generally quite relaxed and fun and it was nice to have the opportunity to dance. One night of the cruise was a themed evening with food, drinks and entertainment of the Country we were travelling through which gave you the opportunity to sample everything. Read Less

The service was exceptional aboard the Viking Hlin; the accommodations comfortable and thoughtfully appointed, the dining exceptional, the itinerary excellent. The ship was spotlessly clean, and the staff made a point of providing for and even anticipating our needs. The tours included in the itinerary were greatly enhanced by having local tour guides, and the audio system allowed freedom to explore while listening. All of the optional excursions were worth the cost. The itinerary allows a balanced of "programmed" activity and freedom to explore. Sharon, our program director, was visible and helpful, providing an overview of each upcoming day (handily reinforced on a guide left in the room each evening during turn-down, and including museum addresses, hours, pricing, restaurant info--a thorough overview of options in each location). We loved the trip into the Alps to Mount Titlis, the extended time in gorgeous Lucerne, tours of the Black Forest (including a brief hike in the forest, which made all those Grimm stories of children being eaten there seem quite plausible), the beautiful Alsace region (and trip along the wine trail to a family operated winery)--on and on! All of that, and mornings on the Rhine beginning with a lovely breakfast (jams and yogurt made on board), and evenings ending with a sumptuous meal. The river cruise was the start of our honeymoon and we felt unsure what to expect as we had never done a cruise before. Well all I can say it was exceptional and outstanding. The service was excellent as was the food and wine. We couldn't fault other than they need to have some toothpicks which I know is picky!! We were trying to fill out the sheet with comments on how they could improve the cruise and the toothpicks was the only thing we could come up with. The tours were excellent as was the guide. I did do an extra tour to the winery - it was okay but not as good as the included tours we did. In the end we could not fault Viking and considering we were on our honeymoon at no time did we feel over crowded with 197 other guests. Would thoroughly recommend Viking so much so we have just booked another cruise for next year at the Captains recommendation. Read Less

We are sitting in Paris now after disembarking the viking hiln in Basel…after the first couple of outstanding days on the ship, some hiccups developed that disappointed us a little. The food quality went down noticeably during the cruise, which surprised us. On one castle tour, our ENTIRE group was left behind at the ship…. and the confused staff person (her first tour) walked us around for over an hour "looking" for the bus. OK, mistakes happen and we don't judge a whole cruise by one episode….but for the on-board hotel manager to repeatedly blame the "stupid bus driver" for leaving without us….yes, the bus driver drove away in an empty bus… is wrong. An absolute lack of leadership and accountability on the part of a senior staff member disturbed many of us much more so than the screw up. The most anticipated tour for us was the Black Forest tour…we were disappointed by a poor tour guide and what amounted to one stop at a cuckoo clock store. For those of you that have been on large cruise ships and been "escorted" to a "ship friendly" store, you know what i mean….Our original intent was to buy a clock on this cruise... but that changed once we got there, mostly based on prices…we had done a lot of research prior to the trip for cuckoo clocks so we know enough about quality and cost…we figure we will order on-line from the Black Forest and save money. Basically we had an hour and half bus ride through a magnificent area being distracted by an inaudible guide. Then an hour wandering through one store, then an return ride back to the ship. The other tours were good to very good and the staff continued to be outstanding . They worked very hard, always smiling and helpful. The viking owned busses are excellent and plenty of room. Our aquarium room was wonderful. We enjoyed it much more than any ocean cruise ship rooms. The accent lighting in the room, REAL shower glass doors, a toilet seat with that magic thing that doesn't let the seat slam down (really cool) all were great. We surely wouldnt spend the extra money for a balcony, particularly in cooler weather. Will we take a 3rd cruise with viking?…yes, even with the hiccups, we bought 2 future cruise certificates. With the exception of the hotel manager, the staff really made the cruise…..We enjoy river cruising….no art auctions, no long lines at the buffet, no "buy this", or massage that …etc etc. we are not the "Hi, what is your name and where are you from ?" type and we were able to find spots to be by ourselves… although no tables for 2 exist in the dining room, that was not a problem for us…we met some wonderful people during the week and tried to avoid only a few others. You probably know the type…self absorbed and omni knowledgeable about every topic…and NEVER take a breath….. Read Less
