This is a very nice ship and the crew is very friendly but as far as ports this cruise leaves a lot to be desired. If you like to do ship excursions then this ship will work for you. But if your like me and like to go out on your own and explore away from the hoards of shipmates I would be warned. This ships itenerary is almost designed to force you to use thier excursions. Here is why. Marsielle, LaSpezia, and Civitevechcia have little to no transportation from the port. Marsielle had none. and RCL shuttle drop you off away from the sights. It was a $40euro taxi ride to town. in LaSpezia you must take their shuttle to the port entrance, then its either a $25 taxi and 45min walk to the train station where there is a good chance you will encounter a pick pocket. then a hour train ride to Pisa. In Civitevechcia (Rome) RCL provided 3 busses for 3000 passengers to the city center which was 20min away. (2 hour bus wait) then then drop you off to a taxis area for a $25 taxi ride to the train station. for a hour ride to Rome. RCL has designed this cruise and its time in port to discourage any freelance exploration. While the itenerary will say 12 hours in port. after disembarkation, busses, taxis, trains, and return you are lucky to get 5 hours. and if you get stuck on the extraordinarily poor Italian train system like we did it could be a expensive day. This is my 2nd time cruising with Royal Caribbean, the first time was 8 years ago. This time it was with my husband and 2 children ages 15 and 11. My sister and her family of 4 and mother and aunt joined us as well. The service is excellent, waitors, room attendant, guest services, entertainment staff all provide exceptional service. The food is delicious, no complaints there. However for a family of 4, it is expensive on a 7 day cruise. Every thing is extra like pop, alcoholic drinks, specialty restaurants. There is also an 18% daily gratuity expense for all the staff, which includes the behind the scenes staff. Which I understand is well deserved but if you buy something that is extra like a Starbucks coffee or an alcoholic drink at the bar, you are also charged another 18% gratuity tip and then asked if you want to add an additional tip on top of that. Yes they give you an onboard credit for each room you book, and in our case we booked 2 indoor state rooms because 1indoor stateroom is too cramped for a family of 4. An indoor stateroom is of course the cheapest price and they say it can accommodate a family of 4 but it really can't. However booking 2 indoor state rooms was cheaper than booking a slightly bigger room (with a window or a balcony). However that also means double the gratuity charges. The onshore excursions are also very expensive. Yes they provide convenience of pick up and drop off right at the ship and most likely provide excellent tour guides however for a family of 4, we could not afford the Royal Caribbean onshore excursions as the cost could run us from minimum $400 USD for half day excursions to over $2000 USD full day excursions and if you are at a different port each day, the cost of all the daily excursions add up. This is why we either went out and ventured on our own or hiring a local touring company, which I highly recommend and it will involve months of pre-planning but so worth it and affordable for a family. I have mixed emotions about cruising, the positive is that they provide excellent service and for a Mediterranean cruise, is a good way to see Europe however the negative, the cost for the cruise alone is expensive but it doesn't stop there as there is so much extra you are paying for - pop and alcoholic beverages, specialty restaurants, their onshore excursions, and plus the gratuity and additional gratuity for all the extras. This was our first ever cruise. We read many reviews and had super high expectations. Get ready, the first 2 days you will be a bit disappointed with the service, everyone is stressed and every restaurant is packed and has long queues. 3rd day onwards is when you start enjoying your cruise. Everywhere is more organized and calmer. We also opted to do this cruise due to the many activities in the ship. So we did not go down from the ship often. To our surprise on port days all most all activities were closed and opened up at 15:00 :/. So we did not go down in order to enjoy these activities but in reality they opened up when everyone is coming back form their excursion. Anyways, once we got the hang of opening hours we started enjoying the cruise even more :) Food on the ship was super good. Main dining rooms were our favorite. Drinks were also yummy and had many types too! Unfortunately after an awesome week, the last day just literally ruined our experience. We try to order savignon blanc and they tell you sorry we don’t have any left just chardonay. Ok, Lets go for a Pina Colada.... sorry just finished... same for peroni and corona. I thought royal caribean are the best of the best when it comes to food and drinks and making sure guests are happy. To top it all up , we love love the hot tubs. Some were open 24hours (solarium) so after our dinner and some dancing we used to go up to the tubs and enjoy some relaxing time. It was the highlight of our day. On the last day of our cruise, during the day we were at the hot tubs (adults only) but it was left unattended so kids and teens just kept coming in and we obviously ruining the peace. We decided to head out and come back later on after midnight. So excited after a good night at dazzles we headed to our room, changed to our bathing suits and off we went to deck 15. The last drop of the day.... all hot tubes were drained and closed Read Less
