We wanted to visit Scandinavia, and this cruise highlighted many of the areas we wanted to visit. We have been to Europe many times, but this was our first trip via cruise. We would like to take a river cruise next time. Our embarkation was excellent, and we were greeted right away after landing in Amsterdam. The food was out of this world! Every meal was awesome with wonderful service each time. Our staff members for our cabin were wonderful and very courteous and kind. The weather could not have been more perfect as well, so we thank the captain for arranging that for us, too :-). The port talks and TED talks that were available were all very informative, and the entertainment on board was excellent as well. I loved seeing so many wonderful books so readily available all around the ship as well. Thank you to all the staff for helping to make this such a wonderful experience. Read Less

It was part of a special Viking promotion. The ship, itself, was excellent and the service was excellent. The Restaurant meals were excellent and the waitstaff was efficient and friendly. We were disappointed in some of the included shore excursions as we felt as if we had not gained a sense of the city. The exceptions to that were Oslo, Norway, where we had an outstanding tour guide and Hamburg, Germany, where we had more time to get a feel for the place. The visit to Skagen, Denmark, was good, although our tour guide didn't give us a chance to stop and take in individual sites. But it was a beautiful little city with friendly people and interesting shops. It would have been good to drop one of the Danish stops and add a Norwegian stop. If we were going to take the cruise again, I think I would sign up for some of the optional tours to get a better sense of the towns. Read Less

This cruise was to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. We took advantage of a last minute cabin upgrade offer and were glad we did. The ship was beautiful and easy to get around. All the restaurants served delicious food and the service is always outstanding with their specialty restaurants particularly standing out. We enjoyed all of the shore excursions and took advantage of a couple of extra ones. This cruise took us to ports we haven't been too before. The local guides provide a wonderful perspective and offer personal bits of information making the tour more enjoyable. The staff is always pleasant with a smile and kind word when encountered. We are pleased with the house keeping and dining staff which we see several times a day. They are always helpful and quite responsive. We enjoyed the entertainment, especially having a live band to dance to. The port talks and enrichment lectures are worth attending. They are enjoyable, entertaining and educational. We can't wait for our next Viking cruise. Read Less

Informal, impromptu, catered to our every need, every detail covered. Super easy getting on and off. Definitely going again on the Mediterranean next time. Great local guides, the sound devices give you freedom of movement during tours. The ship never has to tender, we can always dock and just get off and walk around. We love walking, and these cities are built for it. The Danish towns of Skagen and Fredericia were just lovely, the people so welcoming and friendly. These lovely small towns said farewell to our ship with their little marching bands! We loved Copenhagen, too, extended there on the start of the trip. Kiel, Hamburg and the Kiel Canal were also highlights. Entertainment on board was exceptional, as were the historical folks on board. Lots of food choices, never had to get too dressed up, we were able to dine when and where we wanted without having to make a reservation. Read Less

A friend suggested it because it was new and had an interesting itinerary. I had been on a Viking tour of China so was familiar with the company. I was very impressed. The ship is lovely, the service is excellent, wine with lunch and dinner was included and was very good and generously poured and the places we visited were interesting. I liked the entertainment and the lounges. We were in room 4094, a medium priced choice. Very nice and quiet as well. We ate in both specialty restaurants - the Italian themed one was very good - as well as in the dining room and the buffet. We were able to eat some lunches and dinners out on the deck and that was very nice. When I got back home I told all my friends that I wouldn't go on any other cruise line besides Viking. The good news is that they are building a lot more ships in this same style! Read Less

Overall, the cruise was wonderful. The excursions were excellent and the guides were well informed. One exception to the excursions was a guide that left part of the group without notice. Now, we bring a map supplied by Viking. The cabin had plenty of room, the bathroom was big, and well prepared every day. The food was tasty and plentiful. Did not like the special dress code for a few of the Viking restaurants. The size of the ship was small enough to enter the smaller harbors and was located near the city centers. We like Viking's policy of adults only on the cruises. A disadvantage of the Viking provided flights is Check-in is not an option the day before the flight, which is inconvenient. Our final flight was delayed for embarkation, but Viking made arrangements to pick us up at the airport on time to bring us to the ship. We like Viking and have booked our next Viking Cruise. We had not been to Scandanavia and were interested in seeing the fjords and other scenery. We liked the one-stop unpacking of a cruise so that was the logical choice fo;r our next vacation. We had great prior experiences with Viking, one a river cruise on the Danube and one an ocean on a sister ship to the Sun, from Venice to Istanbu. We were greeted by friendly reps at the airport followed by a quick trip to the port. The embarkation was as efficient as could be, particularly having pre-registered on line. On board the cabin and public amenities were great as we expected from the prior ocean cruise. We started out with sit down dining and then found that the World Cafe food was as good and also with more selections made that our usual stop. There were a good variety of shore excursions and in most ports we found an appropriate excursion without extra charges. They had helpful and friendly local guides so we had enjoyable and educational expeiences. Entertainment was very good and the three on board historians with their lectures were and added bonus. A 5 star experience in every category. The food was excellent and plentiful. The staff accommodating, friendly and approachable. Excursions reasonable and interesting. The Spa was incredible! The service was tip-notch! Pre-cruise stopover in Iceland was excellent. Staff met us at airport and provide orientation on bus ride to hotel. A hot, full breakfast awaited us at the hotel. Transport back to airport, though early in the morning, was timely. Welcoming in Bergen was warm and well coordinated. We did not see Our bags again until they were in our cabin. Embarkation was hassle free and very quick. Lunch ready upon arrival and we were out tiring within an hour of boarding. First dinner was at Manfredi's specialty restaurant and was remarkable in terms of food and service. A great way to start the cruise. Twelve hour excursion to Berlin was well coordinated and the private train was a nice touch. Read Less

My sister and I have always wanted to see where our ancestors came from, Sweden and Norway, and what a way to go! Viking was the absolute best choice we could have made for ourselves. We loved our cabin, loved the ship, loved the food - never got bored and wish the trip had lasted at least another week. It really was the trip of a lifetime and I don't know how we'll ever top it. Great service, nice people on board, stunning ship decor, a fantastic spa, no kids running around, no pushing and shoving or long lines. It was EVERYTHING I could have wished for in a cruise. If I HAD to change one thing it would be to add a couple of sea days into the itinerary as I would have liked to have spent more time relaxing on that gorgeous ship. We loved the shore excursions - even the ones that were included at no cost. Wonderful, wonderful, experience and highly recommend to anyone that is even thinking about VIKING. VIKING DOES IT RIGHT! We had visited Sweden previously and wanted to see more of Scandinavia. We had been on two Viking River Cruises and loved them so we wanted to continue with Viking. We loved the educational and entertainment options on board. We also liked the logistical planning so some of the guests could attend a presentation while others went to dinner so everyone didn't go to dinner at the same time. Very clever. We didn't feel overwhelmed by the over 900 guests as there were so many things to do and places to hang out on board that the experience was comfortable and enriching. The river cruises had about 100 guests so we were concerned about the larger number, but we never felt overwhelmed by the much larger size of the voyage. The cabin staff were helpful, friendly and responsive to our requests. They all - the entire crew - were very professional and respectful throughout the voyage. The shore excursions were wonderful - so educational and well planned. The guides were knowledgeable and professional. The buses were clean and comfortable. We have been and will continue to share our praises for Viking to family and friends. we also enjoyed our extended stays in Oslo and Copenhagen. Beautiful and inviting cities. Read Less

Loved the bands that welcomed us in some of the ports. What a fun event to watch. The excursions were very nice but since we had to change our trip dates we didn't get to see as many things as were available because they were sold out. Excursions we went on were very interesting. The food choices at meals were very good. I especially liked the food that was customary in ports. Great job by all the serving staff for taking care of our drink needs. Loved the spa. Had a great massage and had my nails done by a wonderful cosmetologist. Loved listening to the stories the tour guides told us about each country. Read Less

Every country, every port was chosen with great thought and this cruise gave us a wonderful view of the Baltic countries. The ship staff work so hard to provide us with a fabulous experience; nothing is too much for them to handle. The amenities are beyond comparison on the boat. The Scandinavian design and spa is extremely enjoyable at most times of the day. The food and restaurants available create dishes unique to the area and beyond. The wines available with meals are excellent quality. The port talks and educational lectures are extremely informative for the areas that we were visiting. Past experience with Viking put them at the front of our list of cruise ship companies. Our interests were in exploring and experiencing a part of the World that we had not visited previously or to this depth. While a one destination trip will give one much greater depth of experience and understanding of a locale, a cruise such as this is excellent for giving a broader scope of a number of countries and their peoples. This trip showed us the rugged beauty of Norway's fjords and mountains, the rolling countryside and cities of Sweden, the lovely, fertile lowlands of Finland, Russia, Estonia, Poland, northern Germany and Denmark. It truly packed a unique, busy itinerary and frankly, dizzying assortment of countries into a 15 day experience. Especially interesting (and recommended) are the optional home visits available on this cruise - we visited two Danish families and one farm based one in Norway. These put a more personal face to the countries we visited. Read Less

Beautiful ship; staff extremely pleasant and accommodating!! Loved Entertainment especially Luis and Viking Band( not a fan of classical music).. Some of the entertainers they brought on board were not my favorites. Ship entertainment staff- very good. Great shows except forgot the Rollong Stones in the 60’s. Liked staying over in Stockholm, St. Petersburg and Bergen. Only one day at sea was great!! Food in specialty restaurants great!!! Liked the different menus at Chef’s Table- wonderful! Manfredi’s was great too! Buffet for dinner was not my favorite; not a fan of buffets anyway. Also thought people should have dressed better for dinner—upscale casual please! Beverage package worth it!! Loved the gym!! Thanks for such a nice one and well equipped. TV and internet in room- generally worked well; good variety of options to watch! Great cruise overall and very smooth. Tours in St. Petersburg ( Catherine’s Palace and Hermitage) were great! Read Less

a cruise i have been wanting to do for a few years. we finally bit the bullet and spent the money to go. service could not have been better. if you can do it for a special occasion DO IT!! service of ice water at the pool - no problem finding plenty of open chairs. then sorbet and champagne around 3:30 to cool you off! high tea at 4pm in the tea room. smiling and accommodating help. great food which included something from the country we were visiting, free beers and wine with lunch and dinner, great burgers by the pool, a spa with a room full of snow, bathrooms with heated floors, lectures and entertainment also about and from the ports of call. an example of the service - i am short and had trouble using the single cup coffee maker that was on a shelf set in about shoulder high. to fill you had to put water in a container at the back of it and then press a few buttons on top which i had a hard time seeing . when we received a survey in our cabin asking for suggestions and comments my husband suggested in the future planning of rooms to switch the safe and the shelf to make it easier to use. the next evening our room steward showed up - "I am here to move your coffee maker!" we aim to make everyone happy. i will fill the back with water for you also! wow was my husband impressed as was I. this is just an example of what we experienced daily - besides the ship being beautiful. the right size also to get into tight ports of call. one great experience! my other cruise experiences pale in comparison. The atmosphere on the ship made everyone feel friendly and at home. The accommodations were exquisite and comfortable and here was always a place to be comfortable in you own space. Viking does a masterful job of bringing in the culture, history and climate of the destinations visited whether it be b y entertainment, port talks, destination menus, etc. The local aides that they hire are excellent and the entertainment on board is also excellent. We love Viking River Cruises, so decided to try this ocean cruise - the itinerary looked, and was, amazing. The many ports and the shore excursions were very good - enough options to meet a variety of interests. The cabin was quite nice and comfortable, with plenty of room for storage and movement. The cabin stewards, the dining room and cafe/kitchen staff, the maintenance people, all staff members were friendly. It was obvious that the desire is to anticipate needs and possible disruptions, in order to help us feel safe and comfortable. My only suggestion is for better communication between the Viking flight booking staff, and the on-board customer service staff, and the airline. Those of us flying to the post-cruise extension had some difficulties and the on-board staff was unable to assist us. Had they called the airline for us, as asked, or communicated with the Viking people who made the reservations, perhaps this group of people wouldn't have had a stressful disembarkation. The ocean-cruise crew may need to learn more about the disembarkation-transport to the airport and at-airport services provided by the river-cruise crew. I trust this will improve in time because Viking strives for excellence. That said, we are looking forward to another Viking Ocean cruise in January. Read Less

Our cabin was outstanding, with the veranda providing us a chance to watch the world go by as the ship was sailing. Being able to open the door between our veranda and the one of our traveling companions provided us a chance to share the experience. The service we received during the whole cruise, from our cabin staff and all staff members on the rest of the ship was what we have come to expect from Viking - friendly and professional They do a great job of representing Viking. Only problem with the shore excursions was there were "too many and not enough time, We especially like the Fram train trip into the fiords of Norway. Beautiful way to begin our adventure. I have always wanted to see the Scandinavian countries. Viking made this possible and it was the most wonderful cruise my wife and I have ever taken! We have taken nine cruises and this was the best!. Viking does it right, great accommodations, great food, great service! Viking is absolutely the best cruise line to sail with! One more thing, the room, the Explorer Suite was a jewel, as good as any hotel suite we have ever stayed in! The food was great, as usual, and the shore excursions were entertaining and educational. Our cabin steward, Adria, was the best ever! He paid close attention to our needs and the cabin was kept spotless. The stops in Copenhagen, Gdansk, Tallin, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm were wonderful with St. Petersburg being one of the most enriching and educational stops we have ever made! I highly recommend Viking for anyone wanting to visit these countries. It was truly a great time and educational to boot! Read Less

This was our first cruise on a Viking ocean ship after having taken the Romantic Danube cruise three years ago. We lucked out on the weather with 14 days of warm sunshine and the seas were calm. We had a junior explorer suite with plenty of room very close to the Exlplorer's Lounge. Our favorite spots were the fjords in Norway and St. Petersburg. Dining by reservation was super fun and we made new friends. The nordic spa experience seemed intimidating at first but we quickly bought in and visited several times! Our only disappointment was one of our shore excursions that was rescheduled to an earlier departure late the night before by the vendor and we missed the notice (and, thus, the excursion). Otherwise, things worked like clockwork and we are Viking Fans for life! On board shopping was excellent and very personalized. The daily previews were very informative and helpful and the fact that we could watch a video replay at our convenience was great. Read Less

I had previously taken a Viking River Cruise and loved it. I like smaller ships (previously having sailed many times on the Star Clippers, and a couple of times on the Windstar Line). I was a little worried that 900 passengers would be too big for our tastes. I was wrong. It never ever felt like 900 passengers. The public spaces are well designed and there were always plenty of places to hang out without feeling crowded. Loved the Explorer Bar. On the whole, loved the service. The only complaint I would make is about the wine service which was definitely lacking. We bought the silver beverage package to upgrade the wine choices, but in the main dining room and in the World Café it was difficult to get a wine list and they just seemed interested in pouring the included wine. The specialty restaurants did have good and upgraded choices with a wine steward who knew what he was doing. Loved Viking Ocean Cruises. Already booked our next one. Read Less

From my first phone call to inquire about a Viking Cruise I knew I had made the right choice! Viking made us feel like friends as opposed to a customer and that feeling continued up until we boarded the Viking Sun. While on the Cruise we built friendships with members of the Viking Sun Staff that have remained in contact with us! Everywhere we went on the Viking Sun the staff welcomed us by name! The restaurants made us feel like we were walking into our favorite restaurant back home where they knew us and were excited to see us and had been awaiting our arrival. I have been to England numerous times for business, but my wife has not. We also decided to try a Viking ocean cruise after several river cruises. The Viking Sun returned from a 'round the world cruise' the day we embarked. It took a bit to get the embarkation organized, the cabins turned, and the wait staff to get in a team configuration. Eventually the excellent Viking service became the norm. The itinerary was relatively new and the ports of call really welcomed the ship with information, greeters, and in some cases costumed actors and dance groups. The excursions were great, except one where the local coordinators really blew it. [The excursion was scheduled to a very popular location on a Bank Holiday resulting in the time being spent in bumper to bumper traffic in lieu of at the venue.] While not as convivial as a river cruise, the Viking Ocean cruise is none the less way more informal and facilitates the making of friends better than any other cruise line. The lack of children, a casino, constant activities at the pool and elsewhere, were not missed by us. The entertainment was excellent! Read Less

What an amazing itinerary! The big cities: London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Dubin, Belfast...; but also the beautiful coasts and countryside: Loch Ness, Leeds Castle, Canterbury, the Orkney Islands, the Shetland Islands... Best way to get a perfect sampling of the UK IMHO. And as a bonus, you end your trip in Bergen, Norway. I had never been (and thought I'd never be) to Scandinavia. Nice that everyone is so friendly and speaks fluent English. Everywhere felt very safe, even the cities. Mostly used the British pound sterling (the Euro in Ireland and the Krone in Norway) so money was easy. Delicious Fish & Chips everywhere. Meat pies. Guinness, Scotch abound. Wonderful Celtic/Scottish music; bagpipe playing. Beatles in Liverpool (and London if you want to do Abbey Road). We did a combination of included tours, Viking pay tours, and stuff on our own. Nice mix. Service on Viking is impeccable and the food is delicious so you "come home" every night to a luxury floating hotel. Highly recommend! Read Less
