Lovely ship and a good overview of New Zealand's East Coast

Honesty upfront...I did not choose this cruise. My 82 year old Dad did but ill health prevented him from going so Viking kindly allowed my Husband and I to substitute. At 55, the passenger demographic (more like 75-85) was too old for us and the activity level for the included excursions was too sedate BUT, for older and/or less mobile people, this cruise would be perfect. The ship is ...

HUGE Fan of Ocean cruising - however the older I get, the smaller the ship! I do not want to travel with children , (will take grandkids on Disney and love kids there), appreciate a contemporary ship with quiet elegence,, do NOT like snobbery, expect decent food, expect excellent service, friendly staff and my choice for paying extra for a beverage package. I also want an excursion at every port, ...

Though we've traveled on many different cruise lines, this was our 1st Viking cruise. Prior to boarding our experience was so-so. Viking brochures clearly tell you that on board tips & gratuities are included for ocean cruises in general and this trip in particular, yet as soon as you pay they ask you to prepay onboard tips and gratuities. We booked with 2 other couples (6 people total) and asked ...

My husband and I are in our forties, so we understand we’re younger than the typical Viking guest. We have done two Holland America cruises in the past (although in 2010 and 2015, so several years ago) and enjoyed them. We did a Viking River cruise in 2019 and loved it, which was our primary motivator for booking with Viking Ocean. We’re avid readers and generally quiet people, so the appeal of 1) ...

This was our 1st ocean cruise with Viking after doing 3 river cruises with them. We did the Australia/New Zealand itinerary. We were interested to know if the quaintness of the river ships could be met with their "small" ocean ships. We found the Orion to be a delightful experience. The ship itself is beautiful. Well decorated in an understated manner. Lots of public areas to meet up with ...

We have been on a three Viking River Cruises and wanted to try an Ocean Voyage. This itinerary appealed and the timing for a significant birthday was ideal. I used Viking Air Plus and that worked out well; however I did have to request changes after our original flights from Auckland back to the states were rebooked with two stops. We spent a week in Sydney on our own over New Year's Eve (a ...

Three days at sea with not much to do. Trivia game, working on a puzzle; we did not even see a movie posted on those days. Looking for things to do in the evening all we saw was music here, music there, and more music on stage. Only four hours in one town--not nearly enough. Akoroa would have been a better stop than Lyttelton (though we did go up the gondula). Did not like having to leave room ...

Our first Viking Cruise was the most comfortable and relaxing cruise we have been on...probably because it is geared for people of our age group (late 60’s-70’s). We enjoyed the spa, lectures, entertainment, and all the open spaces on the ship. The staff was very good and friendly. We mostly ate at the buffet (World Cafe) and enjoyed the convenience of that (we appreciated the staff’s concern ...

I have traveled on 9 previous Viking River Cruises and realize I enjoy smaller ships more! I chose this ocean cruise because I wanted to see New Zealand and it was the only Viking Cruise available. I found that with river trips, people are more interested in the places traveled while with ocean cruises it seem to be the cruising itself. Also it is easier to get to know people and make ...

Overall, the cruise portion of our Aus/NZ trip was good. The itinerary was appealing as it included Hobart, Tasmania, and smaller centers in NZ. We arranged our own flights. Viking Orion is a classy looking ship with wonderful, friendly fellow passengers. The vast majority were Americans, average age was a good 70. Public areas were well used but comfortable. My partner used the spa and really ...
