first time cruise - last time now this company. Welcome aboard - had to argue that we had pre-purchased a drinks package! Food was only ok - most days stale bread was delivered to the table. albeit the waiting staff were very pleasant and attentive. Spirits (drinks) watered down. Which i proved to the staff. The surcharges and additional fees are a total rip! Whilst I embrace a multicultural world and appreciate that English is not the native language of the Nightly MC - it would have been to understand what he was saying not having to second guess every other word. The evening activities are extremely limited and only one entertainment bar open - which (my opinion) allows children to run around the dance floor till the early hours - why? The casino, both time i visited - closed???? The cruise director - i really didn't need to hear ''i love you all'' every-time you spoke. When departing the ship we got hit with unexpected charge of nz$480.00 fees and charges we couldn't understand.... leaving the ship was similar to boarding, we felt ripped. Congrats Carnival you sure understand customer service - not! Read Less

Where should I Start? This was THE worst experience ever. The entertainment was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed, that is all that is good on this ship. The food throughout only catered for asian customers. Even the Western Restaurant was western food with asian flavours? asian spices, weird food pairing? we were served steak on a bed of noodles? unbelievable, plating combinations never before seen not to mention we were served stale bread every single evening. Drink orders took in excess of 30 mins every single time in every single venue, most drink orders would come back wrong. The staff are not across the english language therefore the entire cruise was very frustrating. We tried the coffee in every single cafe/restaurant/eatery, no-body on board could make a proper cup of coffee. We were in a group of 7 and we all purchased drinks and coffee vouchers on arrival to find we cannot have a cup of tea instead of a coffee as it was terrible. The staff refused us tea which is cheaper than a cup of coffee, therefore we did not use our vouchers. No customer service and no effort to make customers happy in any way. Staff smiled and greeted us constantly all through the ship but could not show any compassion or accommodate any reasonable request. We collectively will never recommend this cruise to anyone. Choose this cruise line as first time down to Australia and needed to explore. We have been on many cruises in the mid range but this one was well below our expectations. Chinese line. Need a lot to learn about what Western passengers expect. Apparently this is normally a gambling ship out of Singapore and HongKong. Rooms were clean. Single beds which we did not expect. Staff were very polite. Wines were fine and well priced. Food up in the LIdo was mostly cold to warm. Food in main restaurant was just OK. Bread always stale. Set menu in Chinese restaurant no choices. Cordial as juice for breakfast. Last day was for excited as on the menu was eggs with smoked salmon. When it arrived asked where was the smoked salmon.Answer it was minced into the scramble eggs. Not what was expected. Could only have Lipton tea. Any other types like decaf or peppermint etc needed to pay for. Free coffee was terrible. Coffee from cafe bar was Ok but you needed to buy it. Port days times of arrival and departure very poor. For example arrived Melbourne 3pm left 12 midnight. So by the time disembarked which was very very slow all attractions closed. Captains communication was none existent. Only heard from him once and that was when we couldn’t leave Sydney because of bad weather. No communication when we could disembark just had to watch other people making moves. Never again. Not cheap compared to say mid priced R.C. Or H.A. Or Celebrity. Stay with them. Read Less

We had never been on a cruise and it came up on email and the travel agent highly recommended it even though I subsequently discovered she had never been on the ship. Amenities and cabin were good. Staff good but difficult to communicate with . Mostly Filipinos and Indonesians . Got hassled as soon as I boarded to purchase vouchers for alcohol- “today only very cheap price - bought the 5 bottles of wine package and 2 of the $70,00 individual drink packages. Drink packages are okay but the wine is almost undrinkable. Had to have a few spirits each day before attempting to tackle the horrible wine. On the last day we asked to settle the bill and we were each charged AUD140.00 for gratuity. I said but I have paid already 18% gratuity tax on everything I purchased and was told it was for cleaning the room.i refused to pay it and they immediately removed the $280.00 from the invoice . It was a try one and how many of the few thousand on board didn’t query it. The other complaint was the lack of entertainment. Their is virtually nothing to do except read and drink or play bingo if u are into that. Their was a handful of bored children on the cruise but most of the movies were children’s movies - mostly cartoons. Read Less

I chose this cruise, number 4 cruise for us, as we had never been with Dream Cruises. I read the reviews and thought they were a mixed bag, so I booked this cruise for my husbands 60th b/day. Embarkation was very quick and disembarkation (although there was no time for breakfast) went very smooth and quickly. The ship itself was beautiful. Most of the staff spoke very little English so it was hard to have a conversation. The entertainment and activities were very limited and undesirable. On our other 3 cruises, there weren’t enough hours in the day for us to do all the activities and go to all the theatre shows. They had so many more choices of activities. The food was very Asian inspired, very ordinary compared to P&O & Royal Caribbean, no variety of fruit, just the basic. Dining experience again was very Asian, not enough choices for Aussie cuisine. 2 family members are vegans, poor food choices, they ate hash browns and bread for 3 days until we complained, then an alternate menu was given, again, extremely poor food choices eg..fruit for dessert for 3 days straight. We paid extra to eat different food restaurants and we ate offshore at every opportunity. Only one option per port for off shore tours, a bus drive city highlight tour. Nothing else was available. There were 6 of us, and it was my son in laws first ever cruise. After telling him all the wonderful things on our past 3 cruises, he was very excited to go but we were all very disappointed and unfortunately would not travel with Dream Cruises again. Dream cruise staff should experience a P&O or Royal Caribbean cruise to see the difference between them. I usually never write reviews about trips and we are a family that loves cruising. We are very casual and enjoy most things, but this cruise was very disappointing, I’m sorry to say. Read Less

We chose this company solely on the price & sailed with them last November from Sydney to Gladstone, Mooloolaba, Brisbane back to Sydney. This time we sailed Sydney, Port Arthur, Hobart, Melbourne, Burnie back to Sydney. (Sydney Port Authority did not allow us to leave the harbour till the following evening due to VERY rough seas & bad storms, some passengers complained but I didn't, as a seasoned cruiser I appreciated it! We had smooth sailing from then on, the shows exceptional, it was our birthdays & they went above & beyond making us feel special! The staff remembered us from previous cruise & continued to give excellent service! We definitely will be back cruising with this company. We get to one port so they reimbursed us a considerable sum!! Never had this previously with ANYONE! Their cruise ship is amazing & staff fantastic, food was excellent too! We were inside cabin & found the room very clean, bathroom excellent, shower had A LOT of room. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was a new company to New Zealand. What made our trip was the entertainment, which was world class. Also the piano player Ronaldo Raz, just made our days as we listened to him playing and singing, just fabulous. We got to as many of his gigs as we could as It was so enjoyable, also it was world class. Food mediocre, beds very hard, which made them uncomfortable., we all had painful backs each night to contend with. Why put folk that ask for a wheelchair to come onto the ship and disembark in the cabin we got, we had to walk to the lift to deck seven, then walk the length of the ship to go down to deck 6 for our meals. This does not show on the deck plan at all,we were the last cabin on deck 6 which showed that we could walk straight into the restaurant , or so we thought. We did go to the quiz days, which we have loved on other ships, but sorry to say could not understand what they were saying to join in, a language problem. Read Less

There is nothing luxurious about the Dream Explorer. Despite the millions advertised spent in renovations, most guests will not feel it because a good bulk of the renovations went into the palace suites that 95% of the passengers will not be able to see or experience. Regular rooms remain old, outdated, small, and oftentimes dirty. The casino, VIP palace decks, expensive non-inclusive restaurants, and smoking areas occupy way too much valuable space on the ship that the majority will not be able to use. The rooms are old, average cruise ship sized, and dirty. The bed was small but comfy, the bathroom is tiny and really old will be a problem to get into if you are overweight. I am 180cm, 72kgs (Tall and slender) and the bathroom was way too tiny for me to get in and out. Pillows were absolutely filthy with years of stains if you, unfortunately, have to take a look under the pillowcase. Walls and ceilings squeak at night when the ship sways back and forth. The sink and shower have trouble draining, the bathroom cups don’t get changed the entire week. The shower and bathroom have mold, the hallways smell, the balcony is small with a tiny rusty stool looking table that can only fit an ashtray. Walls are thin and you can hear outside the halls. At times, the rooms smelled inside from other passengers who were smoking from the balcony. Overall, very poor, dirty, and outdated rooms. Couldn’t wait to get off the ship! The food from the 3 inclusive restaurants will get tiring quickly despite daily rotations. The food is very average at best with some days below average and quite disappointing. Afternoon “all day” snacks are very cheapo, consisting mainly of French fries and one other Coscto-type fried frozen food. Drinks outside of coffee, tea, water, and the apple juice machine are not included. It seems like the staff is constantly trying to sell you something everywhere you turn whether it’s drink packages, discounted watches, perfume, tickets to paid shows, overpriced “duty-free” liquor which you can’t even open on the ship, and of course day trip excursions. This can be tiring to see. The worst part of the cruise is no doubt the other passengers. Consisting of 1400 guests primarily from Mainland China, Australia, India, and Southeast Asia, these are some of the loudest, poorly mannered, and rude people to be stuck on a boat with. Many are inconsiderate, greedy, wasteful and don’t know how to follow directions. The safety drill on the first day was a clear sign that the ship would be unable to handle an emergency as many of the passengers during the safety drill could care less and didn’t know how to follow directions. Meanwhile, the staff has a hard time enforcing any rules from dress code to safety. Also note, there are several smoking areas onboard which can be bothersome to non-smoking guests. The staff is very young, energetic, and pleasant to be around. There’s about 1000 staff primary from Southeast Asia. They may be a bit inexperienced at times, but extremely attentive and overall looked happy to serve. Entertainers from singers, dancers, and other performers came from all around the world. It was truly an international cast at a high caliber of talent. This was probably the highlight of the trip. The cruise director did a fantastic job. The new Sydney to Auckland route has stops at Wellington, Dunedin, Gisborne, and Auckland. Pretty much all these port stops were very unexciting for those who have already traveled the world. It’s definitely more of a convenience cruise for those who already live in Australia and can easily board the ship. Gisborne has almost no tourist attractions at all besides a few statues on the beach. The small run downed town is very quiet and not very catered to tourists. The wine in the city's "wine center" is horrible. Dunedine has limited sites and it's claim to fame is having the worlds “second” steepest residential street and an old railway station. Wellington is of course the capital and a pretty normal city with nice views from the the top of the cable car ride. The best part of the cruise was passing by Milford Sound early in the morning. However, it is not a port stop. Where the boat shines is high-quality entertainment. There’s a different show every day and a wide variety of music choices that will keep you entertained. Shows consists of magic, and several original productions that consists of acrobats and dancing. They’re all very good. There's a very talented couple called Twice As Nice with the husband, Westley Stevens claiming to be a former member of The Stylistics. He supposedly also worked with Lionel Richie and many stars to write several hit songs including Sister's Sledge's "We are family" etc. However, once you go home and google him, there is absolutely nothing on the internet that proves that Westley Stevens was an original member of The Stylistics. There's even quite a few internet posts claiming he is a fraud, yet Genting Cruise lines continues to heavily promote him as a former member of the Stylistics etc. Overall, I will never go on another Genting cruise. It is basically a mass-market cruise that fails to break into the luxury market. Given the many choices in luxury cruises, there are far better with higher standards. Read Less

We are group of 5 adults and 1 child currently on cruise. Ship we feel has lovely decor. This bit of a review is our opinion only. We love some of the shows. Fantastic costumes and unreal lighting show. Normally Kids club a hit, unfortunately has not hit the spot this time on this particular cruise. You can always fine something to eat among the limited choices. Unfortunately we are just use to been spoiled for choice on other cruise lines..The BBQ on the lido grill is absolutely fantastic but unfortunately its only on once per every 7 night cruise. So look out for bbq..We had a stop at Dunedin, the cruise line has a return shuttle from ship to Dunedin for $19 per Adult/Child or there is a local one inside terminal for $6. TV channels are pretty darn good when you get a chance to watch it. I did not get one but the Drink packages are a big hit on the cruise and a great value. At this stage unfortunately no drink package just for kids like other cruiselines. However we just brought cans of soft drinks on. You can get a bottle of wine for $20 + tips or 10 drinks for $65 inclusive of taxes etc includes some spirits, wines, beers. 5 icecream vouchers for $12. Also you can buy a bottle of vodka or jimbeam etc that you can drink in your room if you want too. Internet package the dearest I've seen, about $145 for 7 night cruise..We all passed on this. Staff are among the best we have ever experienced, unfortunately a few terribly rude and aggressive staff spoiled it. Few language barriers at times but eventually you can get it sorted..Swimming pool, spa and water slide are a favorite with all. Be aware no information at this stage is given freely. Which was very frustrating for all the I talked too. This miscommunication lead to 2 to 4 hours wait to get off the boat at different ports. Most people became really upset angry and frustrated. This was the worst experience I've ever seen on any cruise of ever been on. Wellington Te Papa museum is certainly worth a look. Fantastic Gallipoli display. It was so life like, it was incredible. You get your luggage labels at night on the last night of your cruise. This would have been better a day or two out as they disembark deck by deck so if you've got family members on Deck 10 and 5 and deck 8. You could be waiting 3 hours for them to get off the boat which can cause a big problem. so they weren't allowing you to swap which was terribly fustrating for a lot. Some weren't getting off the boat to 1:30 p.m. They did not tell people that they actually had to meet in the theatre then get escorted of the boat in Wellington so this made delay of hours for some people and half the theatre nearly end up rioting. Unfortunately people became terribly upset and frustrated after hours of waiting. I'm sure everything will work out better in time and each cruise will make the next cruise better. Why they did not put some of the crucial staff on sample cruises on each company before it came into Australia New Zealand Waters is beyond me and they could have iron out all these problems in advance. However they were open for suggestions so give it a few months of tweaking problems and everything should be fine. Once again I will have to say the staff one of the best I've ever experienced they were just so lovely and helpful. Read Less

Very disappointing that the lovely wide promenade deck has absolutely no deck chairs or places to sit anywhere. Regular cruisers always enjoy sleeping/reading or horizon gazing from a deck chair. Charges on the ship were for everything possible and always plus 18% service charge plus GST of either 10% or 15% when the ship was in territorial waters. Even the casual counters for cakes and cookies were chargeable and to ensure guests did not take such things from the buffet back to their cabins, you were watched as you tried to leave the buffet and told you were not allowed to remove any food from the restaurant thus forcing you to buy if you wanted a snack for your room. Apart from a lovely observation lounge facing the front of the ship, there were really no other public rooms where you could sit and relax. The main central piazza which is used for all sorts of activities, including movies is a noisy place as along each side are the old fashioned gaming and slot machines. Plus there is a whole other area of such machines. Evening menus offered very little in the way of desserts; normally just a choice of a couple of small cakes. Certainly not like the offerings of other cruise lines. Security is questionable as the cabin number is printed on every card (or access) key that is used for opening doors and making charges. Should you lose your key any finder knows exactly where the key belongs. All other cruise lines and hotels these days do not print room numbers on keys for the sake of security. As the passengers are predominantly of Chinese origin (at least 80% and even 95% in the Palace section) all activities and announcements are in both Mandarin and English. The majority of the crew is similarly of Chinese origin which at times creates difficulties for Anglos to communicate with staff. A very positive comment on the standard of service for Palace guests but nevertheless overall a disappointing experience for a cruise. A male strip show (chargeable) on a ship is not the usual form of entertainment that to me is indicative of a regular cruise line. Other shows were certainly of a high standard, even though an off stage translator had to describe what was going on at the time. Read Less

This cruise is a mixture of good and bad experiences. Disembarkation at different ports was poorly organised as we did not get of the ship until 2-3 hours after the ship docked and disembarkation started. We found it very hard to make our needs understood by the front desk staff as they did not understand English very well. Buffet food was very average and not varied at all. Our cabin was not as we ordered or told it would be. We ordered a queen size bed, and were assured that was what we would get, but ended up with 2 single beds with a large support pole between them, meaning they could not be pushed together to make one large bed. Very disapointiong. (See cabin report below). On a favorable note, the shows in the Zodiac Theatre in the evenings, were outstanding. (Best we have ever seen on cruise ships). Cabin staff were also very helpful and attentive. The dining room staff were helpful and eager to please. Read Less

It has The Palace and normal classes. But do not let this put you off.We sailed normal class and it was good as any other ship We as seasoned cruisers enjoyed the ship and crew ,things done a little different than the normal western type of ship ship. We would rate the ship just below Princess over all, how ever the production shows are outstanding, the best we have seen at sea any where in the world .5 Star shows each night,do not miss any of them. They do many things very well , including letting you collect tender tickets the day before you need them so no rush on the day. Mixed crew even though the ship is mainly in the Chinese market , all try their best to please .Things can be lost in translation at times ,but they get things sorted in a happy way. Choose cruise on price and destination Layout, size of the ship, staff, entertainment and food excellent. Embarking at Whites Bay was a nightmare as we were relying on public transport. Decided to use Captain Cook ferry and continued on the long walk to the terminal. No time was wasted on embarkation, whole process maybe 15 minutes. Cabin excellent level 5 close to lifts. Spacious shower. Disappointed the advertising pictures of the inviting back pool area, and surrounds with dinning areas are only available to Palace customers who were no where to be seen. Like many other ships they have returned to tiered class ships. The service charge of 18% plus 10% GST + gratuities, choice of 10 extra food outlets all with price tag has taken away what cruising was all about. A beer started out $7 end cost $9 a bottle. Shuttle into Brisbane $35, we were to be docked up the river but ended up in the cargo port We have clocked up 28 cruises and feel now they are just money making machines on water. Read Less
