The experience was first class.when there was an issue the team made it disappear as best the could, like low water level. The service was second to none from the time we first met the team until the end. Food was fantastic and wine options great. The crew people made the difference and we have already booked our second cruise. The rooms were very good and well thought out as for the best usage of the space. The ship facilities were all there, pool, spa, gym, etc. Nightly entertainment was great with special presentations on some occasions. All the excursion options were good and well planned out. Again, the service of sf the boat was second to none and the cruise director JJ was excellent. The excursions ere great and options very well presented each and every day. The dining options ere good and the food falntastic. Recommend this to anyone. Read Less

We chose this River Cruise on the recommendation of our Travel Agent and because it was "all inclusive". That included EVERYTHING and all was fantastic. This ship is only 3 years old and beautiful, really nice cabin arrangement (we were on the Diamond deck). We especially noticed the difference when compared to other ships on the river. Fantastic service from all personnel from top to bottom. Our butler brought coffee precisely on time each morning and immediate service for everything from ice to extra supplies for the mini fridge. Once the service people knew what we liked, the mini was "custom" stocked to our requirements. We can't say enough about the food, there were two special meals for each passenger during the voyage and they were way above anything we would do on our own. One was a full 5 course meal with a different and special wine for each course. Entertainment was great every night with our on board performer (Mark) and 4 nights there were additional local demonstrations. We also were treated to two performances just for our group during shore excursions. We are already looking into our next trip with Scenic!! Read Less

Essentially took this tour with another couple who where wanting to celebrate their 30th Wedding Anniversary. Despite the fact our airplane arrived well over an hour late in Prague the very approachable Scenic representative was their to greet us and take us to the local hotel. Likewise for the balance of the trip all the services from presentations by the Cruise Director, departure for excursions to opening of the restaurants were completely on time and very timely. The Chef on our cruise provided an excellent array of culinary delights both on the buffet and a la carte services. The cut on everything from slices meats to vegetables and dessert items was flawless. I inquired with the Chef who frequently made table checks about the "secrets" about a "Clear Tomato" that was being served for lunch. Chef Broccoli was most generous and provided a recipe for this exceptional soup. The effort put in by the entire staff of our trip was 110%. They worked well as a team and professional ignored the occasional unthinking and too casual guest. My only concern would be that the dining room was a slight bit noisy and congested and that for "older" folks (70 +) might find it tiring after more than a week. Likewise the rooms will be a tad small for those on the "heavier or tall" side. The Tailormade Scenic software very innovative and highly effective. I only recently have been using a smart phone but found it enhanced the trip. The system was occasionally nonfunctional when listening to the tour guides in large congested areas. However the information and pictures while sailing down the picturesque Danube River very complementary. Did find the survey questionare at the end of the tour rather long and time consuming. I thought it might take 20 minutes to complete but it had so many questions that I ran out of time and had to omit the last quarter of the survey. Cabin balcony excellent. Really liked the size, the glass, even the comfortable chairs. Read Less

We chose this as our first river cruise as it was an area that I wanted to visit - Prague, Vienna, Budapest. We chose Scenic based on good word of mouth references and the all inclusive feature. The operational aspects and service from being greeted at the airport in Prague to being dropped off at the airport in Budapest was excellent. The staff were warm, welcoming, attentive, fun - everything I could ask for. I am a picky eater so was pleased by the variety and selection of food at breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had great meals every day. I didn’t intend to work out during the cruise but would have liked to be able to do some Pilates/stretching. There is absolutely no room in the fitness room to do this. The cruise did offer morning stretch, yoga, workout on the deck but it was at 7:00 am so didn’t fit with my schedule. Our suite was the only downside to this cruise - we booked the Royal Panorama suite. This is a 420 square foot luxury suite. We had a king size bed, couch, two comfy chairs, a lovely bathroom, with a separate water closet, lots of storage, a comfortable balcony with a large window looking out over the river at the back of the boat. It was exactly what I was looking for when booking and paying extra for this space. Unfortunately, it is not habitable while sailing. The noise and vibrations from the engine/propeller prevents sleep, hearing each other speak or even relax. There is no indication in any brochure about the noise of these cabins nor was there anything said by booking agents. Now that I have cruised, I would know to ask but I find it unethical that Scenic charges an additional $6,500 for this suite with no indication of the problems inherent in the location of this cabin. Our cruise was saved as we were able to sleep in another cabin ( sadly other guests had to leave) but our next door cabin mates had to bear with no sleep for five nights and every other unsuspecting person booking this suite will get no sleep. I have sent an email, to Scenic, I will be interested to see if they respond. Read Less

I’m so pleased I chose the Danube to introduce me to river cruising! Climate changes are affecting river levels and we were unable to cruise the section from Nuremberg to Passau, which was disappointing but Scenic did their absolute best to keep us happy!! We were bused to Passau and there we docked for 3 nights. To see the tours we had scheduled we had to be bused anywhere from 2-3 hours which was tiring - decisions to skip out on tours were made so as not to get overtired. The sights were astounding and the guides knowledgeable. The audio system was inconsistent and needs to be streamlined. I especially enjoyed cruising on the Danube. The Pearl was beautifully maintained. Clean, modern. Meals were delicious. Lots of options. Well displayed. I thought perhaps there could have been an earlier seating for those who didn’t do tours - at times it was a long wait for dinner as late as 7:30 to wait for the buses to return. All staff I found professional and attentive. Vienna was astounding and I would only ask that the cruise stay an extra day there! Our cruise director was terrific! 5 star service! She explained everything well. Always available for questions. This won’t be my last river cruise! Read Less

We are reasonably experienced cruisers (Silversea, Regent, Oceania, Princess) but this was our first river cruise. We chose Scenic based on their all inclusive 5 star claim and the advice of friends who had sailed with Scenic before. The Danube itinerary suited our interest in visiting both Budapest and Prague and the Scenic Amber was reported to have the kind of amenities we were looking for. We were quite looking forward to this cruise but unfortunately Scenic seemed intent on failing to meet even the most basic expectations. First the Ship. Sadly we never got to experience the Amber. A couple of days before our departure for Budapest we were advised by Scenic that we would be traveling on the Pearl not the Amber. No explanation or apology offered. Had the Pearl been the same class of ship as the Amber it would have been a non issue but as the Pearl does not have a pool, which my wife was looking forward to using for daily exercise it was a major disappointment. We understand the vagaries of river travel but this switch did not seem to be justified other than as a scheduling error by Scenic as the Amber was in the same stretch of the Danube as we were and indeed we actually met her heading for Budapest on our way to Vienna. As we had no prior experience with Scenic or river cruises we were not aware of some of the other amenity losses; including no separate dining room for the Table Rive and (hearsay) some people were very upset that the class of cabin they had booked on the Amber was not available on the Pearl. The lack of prior notification of the change did not leave them an opportunity to change plans. Cabin: We were booked on the Diamond deck with butler service and while small the room was more or less as expected. The Pearl is designed with a "separate" balcony area with a window that can be lowered if you wish the outdoor experience or raised in inclement weather. It provided me with an opportunity to get out of my wife's way but being separated from the rest of the cabin reduced the flexibility that the additional space could have afforded. We noticed that some of the other lines incorporated the balcony area into the cabin proper allowing some space for sitting. Service; We cannot fault the staff aboard. Hotel staff worked their butts off trying to keep up but the Pearl is so grossly understaffed (Pax/crew ratio 3.3) that is impossible for the staff to meet the advertised 5 star standard. Our butler was doing double duty as a dining room waiter (on call it would seem). It may seem like a small thing to some but the bean counters at Scenic seem to require the servers to limit a pour of wine to no more than 3 ounces (champagne 1 oz). This would be ok if you could find a waiter to top up your glass but they were usually too busy. At a table of four where we were all drinking the same wine they refused to leave the bottle implying this was against policy. Food: It is hard to find words. First impressions are important and for our first dinner I ordered the Sea Bass. When it arrived, it looked like a sardine on the plate. I have never seen such a small portion. I'm not a big eater and don't tell me I could have ordered more, I know! But as this is a five star ship I shouldn’t have to order two meals to get one! The quality of food was poor to average. Anyone who wishes a balanced meal is out of luck. I ordered extra vegetables every meal. My specific request resulted in a second broccoli floret being added to my dinner. Given the huge amount of wonderful vegetables available in the local markets the lack of vegetables was very disappointing. My wife has an allergy to asparagus and this was made known to the manager. In one instance she wished to order a wrap and asked if there was any asparagus in it. The waiter acknowledged the request but brought the wrap anyway without comment. a close call! Interestingly the quality of the food improved a bit a few days into the cruise after a re-provisioning. Makes one wonder why they didn't start that way. Again, the staffing issue was a problem. Dinners were rushed events, more typical of chain restaurants than a five star dining experience. Due to river level issues were not able to sail to Nuremberg as planned but had to turn around at Regensburg and return to Passau. The extension visit to Prague was a highlight. Great hotel, tour director that was the best ever. All in all we were quite disappointed both with Scenic, the Pearl and river cruising in general. River cruising has too many uncertainties if our experience is typical. I've seen it written that river cruising is like a package bus tour without the unpacking. this is certainly true so if that style of travel is not your preference stay away. Read Less

As with Highfler's review (we must have been on the same cruise), we were disappointed with the 2 ship swaps and corresponding bus rides - in particular the 3 1/2 hours on the bus to Cologne was annoying. As noted by Highfler, our bus ride was along the Rhine where we saw the Scenic Opal going upstream in the area where the Scenic Jade wouldn't sail through - puzzling and annoying to say the least. Scenic Amber was great - staff took an interest in us, food and drink was super After the ship sway, we went to Scenic Jade. The thing that most stood out for not only my wife and I but our other cruise mates, was the staff. They didn't seem to be as interested in our needs as the Amber crew. Service was average. Then another ship sway onto the Scenic Ruby. The crew here was super just like the Amber crew. But the annoying and disappointing issue with the 15 day cruise is the ship swaps - we wanted a cruise where we could unpack, leave our stuff in closets for 14 days and then pack to go home. During these ship swaps, I forgot my converter in my cabin. The bus ride to Cologne was a disappoint as well - we get to Cologne and we have to carry our hand luggage around for the "short" guided tour of the outside of cathedral. Our bus got to Cologne after 11:30am and the tour was finished at noon. Then we had 1 hour of free time to browse (while lugging our hand luggage around). We get back to the bus to take us back and then we were informed that our luggage wasn't at the ship, and we could spend more time in Cologne - at this point, I was frustrated as were all on the bus - just take us to the ship! Our Cruise started off wonderfully on Scenic Amber. We left Budapest September 3 and started sailing. However by September 10 we had to disembark, as a result of lower water we had to pack the night before so we could change to Scenic Jade. On September 9 we were not able to do our desired choice excursions due to time it would take to get there by bus. Instead we were offered a last minute tour of Linz, which was not what I had wanted to see. This trip was our one big expensive journey with many expectations. So when we got on Scenic Jade the staff were not as attentive as they had been on the Scenic Amber. The Service on the Jade was not up to the standards of the Amber ship. Restaurant staff and bar staff were extremely slow in their service, you could tell that they weren’t happy with there job and this came across to everyone. We had to endure this ship change but the staff on the Jade were taking their frustrations out on passengers. So we continued on sailing till we were supposed to be going to Cologne but were not able to sail any further and we had to disembark once again. That next day we would take a four hour bus ride to Cologne where we were going to have a shorter tour of city and then free time. We had not been told the night before that our buses we got on in the morning were not going to take us to the ship. We found this out just as we were getting on the bus. Our bus left late for some reason and also decided to take a longer route to Cologne so we only had a short tour of this beautiful city, 1 hour in total. This was originally to bean all day tour. There was one good thing we got another Crew on the Scenic Ruby, they were very friendly staff, more like the Scenic Amber although our staterooms shrunk with every ship more and more. Our luggage also got lost so we didn’t leave Cologne till after 5:30 so this meant that we wouldn’t be able to sail to Amsterdam and get there on time. So in the morning we once again had to go by bus to reach our tour trip on canals on time. The ship arrived later in day. So overall this was far from the trip of a life time, if I had wanted to take a bus so much I would have booked a bus trip. Scenic knew about water levels before and should have offered us a seven day trip with a refund for the rest. Or offered a full refund to sail when water levels were higher. We met wonderful friends on this trip and that is one thing they did give us. But I don’t feel we got compensated for the two full days of sight seeing we missed. Or the unfriendly and sub par staff of Scenic Jade. I think they should be reprimanded for the way they treated Scenic Passengers. I wouldn’t travel with Scenic again unless they compensate passengers better. Read Less

Despite low water, itinerary changes and one ship change to Jade on the last night, Scenic handled it all seamlessly (at least to the passengers). We had to leave Budapest one day early due to low water, which caused us to miss one excursion. We could have gone, however would have required a 5-6 hour bus ride. The tour guides, particularly for the Art Gallery tour in Vienna and the Nuremberg tour were outstanding. The guide for the medieval town in Czech Republic (Dieter) was disappointing and we left the tour for our own walk around after about 10 mins. We had an outstanding tour director (Richard) along with incredible service staff on the Jasper (special kudos to Marko and Sonja). Would definitely travel with them again. Entertainment on board and the special concert in Vienna was simply outstanding! Only counterpoints, 1) the staff on the Jade, which we had for only one night, appeared overly tired and service was a step down from the Jasper. and 2) we were unable to complete the departure survey as we were unable to access on-line, and there was no way to access after the fact? Cruise was advertised as unpack once. We had 3 different ships, Scenic Amber for 6 days, Scenic Ruby for 5 days and Scenic Opal for 3 days. This proved to be frustrating, disruptive and exhausting over a 14 day cruise. We decided on the Scenic Jasper as it had a pool onboard and it was one of the latest ships. Scenic Ruby which we were on for 5 days had no pool and was an older model of ship with training staff from Indonesia. It also did not have an updated bathroom or adjustable bed or flyscreens on balcony window and had a small TV. In other words all the luxury items that you would expect from a balcony suite on a luxury ship were missing. The changing from ship to ship made us miss some of the excursions as we were wiped out. The food was certainly not 5 star, no fresh pastries, poor quality fruit. Certainly no mouth-watering feasts or diverse and delicious food experiences, as advertised. We had expected that we would get cordon bleu food on this luxury cruise. No effort appeared to have been made to serve special or extraordinary food. A review talked about lobster not being cooked properly.... we did not even see one. We enjoyed the easy-walk excursions as we were able to take photos and enjoy the sights at a leisurely pace. The best night was the evening at Melk Castle where the food and entertainment was excellent. I didn’t go on the tour as I was rather tired after the steep walk up to the castle. The waiters on Scenic Amber were experienced and professional as were those on Scenic Opal. I think the staff were over-worked and expected to multi-task as food waiters, bar staff and personal butlers. Read Less

We enjoyed our Danube cruise experience very much. The quality of the cabin, service, food and excursions were excellent. My special food requirements were always met.The staff handled unexpected events, due to low river levels, very well. The tours were well planned with free time included. There was plenty of choice as well. Entertainment on the ship was very good and included a waltz display and lessons and a fun disco. Yvonne, our tour director was great, always helpful with a real sense of humour. The dining area was well laid out to meet our fellow passengers. We found Prague a fascinating place to explore with a great tour guide and help to plan our own free time exploring as well. Loved the Art deco Imperial hotel. Certainly an amazing place to have breakfast. Many other highlights but we enjoyed; the classical music concert in the Viennese palace, the abby and town at Melk, the music and wine in Durstein, cruising down the Danube near Budapest and Budapest at night from the boat. We are looking forward to another scenic cruise one day. Read Less

Prague to Budapest, including flight arrangements--land portion, onboard experience, tours, flights and transfers all absolutely top notch. We had an unbelievable onboard tour director (Richard Grey), staff and their service were excellent, food and beverage terrific. Tours were really well planned, and with Scenic having its own bus fleet following the ship, logistics always worked. Some unique experiences (e.g., concert in Vienna, piano virtuoso in Budapest) made the tours all the more enjoyable. Tour guides were knowledgeable, well spoken, and personable. With food and beverage all inclusive, it was very refreshing not to have to sign for each drink, etc. Our shipboard account was less than $100, all related to laundry. Food, both in the main dining room and in the specialty restaurants, was consistently excellent, as was the waitstaff. For the land portions in Prague and Budapest, the hotels selected were centrally located, and rooms were well appointed. A wonderful experience all around--wish we had had another week onboard. This was our first river cruise and it was a great choice. From the time we arrived at the airport in Prague until we left Budapest, Scenic and its staff went out of the way to assure satisfaction and hit the mark. The scenic tour guides await you at the hotel and give you the keys, having already handled the check in for us. The initial stay in Prague came with a quick guided tour the first evening after the orientation meeting and then a fuller tour the next morning. The tour guides also gave a small tour of the Charles Bridge and surrounding area early on the 3rd day when you could see the sites without the crowds. After leaving Prague, we took a bust to Nuremberg to board the boat. The tour guide accompanied us on the bus and gave us some nice historical information about the Czech republic. The boarding of the boat was simple and smooth. We went through a quick informational session and were escorted to our cabin. The cabin was immaculate and nicely appointed. The food was mostly good through the trip, depending on your tastes of course. There were enough options to keep most people pleasantly fed. There was plenty of staff and they were all eager to please. I can't say enough about how they would handle all requests with a smile and handle things very promptly. It definitely seems that they put customer satisfaction above all else. We look forward to sailing with them again. The cabin was very roomy and comfortable. Plus it came with unlimited laundry, which is very nice to have for a long trip. The only negative to the cabin is that it has a very narrow bathroom, as the tub takes up space that could be better used. The next level of cabin had a more functional bathroom, with room for 2 people to move and a larger shower. Read Less

I took my first ever overseas trip with Scenic Crystal in October 2015 and I can say it was the best experience I could have ever have hoped for, it was truly a dream come true. From the moment I arrived in Prague and met tour director Grabriella who was so knowledgeable, helpful and friendly to finishing the trip in Paris with Bernard, also a wonderful tour guide I experienced nothing but pure luxury, friendliness, kindness and dedication to detail. The cruise part of the trip on the Scenic Crystal was amazing and the cruise staff so fantastic, every detail and daily tours so professionally organised I knew I had chosen the best trip I possibly could have. The cruise director Daniella was amazing and knew ever passengers name by the first day and nothing was too much trouble, the allocated butler Vanya was friendly and very organised and efficient. The cabin staff couldn't do enough and the wait staff and chefs were always efficient and so well mannered and eager to please and the food was absolutely perfect. Erica the waitress was an absolute breath of fresh air and engaged with every passenger, I felt I had known these wonderful people forever. The Captain was also fantastic and mingled with the passengers and crew at every opportunity. Your staff and crew are an absolute credit to you Scenic, thankyou for making my first overseas trip a dream come true, I will recommend you to everyone and if I should have the opportunity to travel overseas again then Scenic will be my first choice. We joined the Jasper from spending 3 nights pre-cruise in Prague, which was a beautiful city and the Marriott was quite nice and perfectly located in old town area. Didn't depart our hotel on a 4 hour bus ride to our ship docked in Passau/Vilshofen, and would have been nicer for either an earlier departure or shorter ride. All aspects of this cruise were very good, with service, public areas, and cabins being considered to be top-notch. A beautiful and new ship, with a crew who are really doing their best to make it a 5-star experience. The food was quite good, with plentiful quantities and well-prepared. The breakfast and lunch buffets were outstanding every day--some of the best we have had. The dinners started out a bit below par for the Scenic objective of being a premier cruise line, but got consistently better each evening. They could improve by having a more varied menu and a few more local selections from the areas we visited. Our cabin steward and butler were totally awesome and consistently went over-and-above in providing exceptional service. Our captain did an outstanding job navigating the low water levels in the Danube, but really didn't see much of him or the hotel manager other than leaving/returning to ship each day after our shore excursions. Would have been nice to see them a bit more as they were quite friendly. Our cruise director did a good job in spite of a few curves thrown at him by some of the ships local tour guides- which he seemed to handle very well. He was quite personable and took care of all of our minor issues, but he appeared a bit overworked and could have used some help from some of the many talented and energetic ship's staff, possibly Scenic needs to create a "trainee CD" program like we saw on our prior cruises with Uniworld, to help assist in herding the flock while ashore. The shore excursions were considered "very good" to "excellent" and will only get better as this new ship and staff get more familiar with the local stops and local guides. Overall, this was a very enjoyable cruise and we would love to try Scenic again in the future. Next time we'll cruise in spring or fall as it was blazing hot each day which had a little bit of an impact on our overall enjoyment of shore excursions and on-deck time. Read Less

Just home from a fabulous cruise on Scenic's beautifully appointed Sapphire which included a 3 day land tour in Prague at the beginning of the trip. This enabled us to get ourselves somewhat acclimatized to the 8 hour time difference from our flight from Western Canada. The tour guides were very informative, Scenic buses always at the ready to transport us to and from our land tours. The ship was beautiful with true 5 Star service. Kudos to our Room Steward Dana, Butler Zoltan and Cruise Director Patrik. Food was great & bar service always readily available. My husband & I made many new friends onboard; of the 165 passengers onboard 80% were fellow Canadians with the balance comprising of Brits, Aussies and a few Americans.
