This was my second river cruise, with both being on Scenic. So my only basis for comparison is ocean cruises, of which I've had many. So some of my comments may be due to the nature of the product and its differences from ocean cruises. Embarkation. Even though we made our own air arrangements, Scenic met us at the airport and whisked us to the ship. There were about a dozen of us, and we were taken straight to the ship in Budapest, where the prior passengers were still disembarking. They made us comfortable in the lounge, and prioritized the cleaning of our cabins, so we were able to access them quite early. This gave us the opportunity to explore Budapest a bit on our own, after a light but satisfying lunch in the River Cafe. The location of the ship--directly across from the Parliament Building--made this exploration very easy. In other words, the embarkation experience was perfect. Crew. Simply outstanding. The Hotel Director, Cruise Director, and Food & Beverage Manager were very much present, and infused the entire ship with a sense of joy. The waiters and room attendants seemed to share this sense, and made the entire experience an enjoyable one. They all handled a major glitch (see below) well. I have to say, though, that I don't get the point of the butler. Ours introduced himself the first day and was never seen again until our final evening in Portabello (the specialty restaurant), where he waited table. Much less effectively than the regular waiters, but I suppose that's to be expected. When we tried to call him for one thing, his line was busy and did not go to voicemail. We flagged down our room attendant, who happily took care of that and all other room-related matters the whole time. The people next to us had an incident where their laundry came back wet. He said he'd take care of it, but never did. They wound up hanging things around their room to dry. Food. Inconsistent. Breakfasts were wonderful, with an omelet station, plenty of buffet choices, and a galley menu of hot dishes made to order. Lunch was the weak spot, with little variety on the buffet and sometimes unappealing galley choices. Though there was a superb vegetarian goulash one day, and the soups were generally very good. Dinners were a mixed bag. A few were outstanding. The rest not so much. Evening menu main courses usually included a meat or poultry, a fish dish, and a vegetarian dish. The vegetarian choices usually depended on cheese for protein. Fish was not their strong suit--most tasted overcooked and dry, though they did nicely with salmon and halibut. They did an excellent job with lamb, and with a seafood dish for the gala dinner toward the end of the cruise. Whether the food was good or not-so-good, the waiters were outstanding. You couldn't help but enjoy any meal because of them. Beverages. Alcohol flowed freely, and the choices of included spirits were very good. The wines poured each evening for dinner were usually based on the location of the ship. Some were to my taste, some were not, but the staff bent over backwards to find us wines we would like if we did not care for the featured pour. Entertainment. The Enrich evening was at Palais Lichtenstein in Vienna--a beautiful setting and a lovely concert. Well done. Sundowners were in the lounge on the ship. Rather a disappointment. Some local acts came on in a few ports, and were interesting and entertaining. The nightly musician, Mark, was a highlight. With an engaging personality, a beautiful singing voice, great piano skills, and a good sense of the crowd for his DJ'ing, he made the evenings come alive. I would take this cruise again just for Mark. Ship's facilities. Because we were sailing in mid-October, the Sun Deck was rarely an option due to chilly weather, so the lounge tended to become crowded. All the more so because this was definitely a partying group. Because the lounge was really the only viable public space, the ship felt claustrophobic at times. We did use the upper deck for viewing the illuminations in Budapest, or to watch the ship go through the locks, but few people stayed up there for long because of the chill, particularly when the ship was moving. The gym is tiny, but has a treadmill, elliptical, bike, and rowing machine, as well as a few weights, jammed in. There is a walking track on top deck, but passengers are asked not to use it before 8:00 am, since it is over people's cabins. The salt room is supposed to be good for respiratory and skin issues, but was rarely used. I did try to use it, but found the lounges uncomfortable and the strange lighting triggered a migraine. Excursions. These were generally good to outstanding. Most were not over-populated, so thus not obnoxious. Much depended on luck of the draw in terms of guides. All but one of my guides were outstanding, peppering their talks with stories and observations that made the sites come alive. Communication. This is Scenic's weak spot. Advance information about excursions is sparse, so we found ourselves trying to make plans with very little knowledge about what the excursions would really include. This was particularly frustrating for those who had some time in the embarkation city beforehand, as they didn't know what to leave for the excursion there and what to do because it wouldn't be included. Other than that, in the end the scarcity of information was not a problem, because the cruise director, JJ, did an excellent job of laying out onboard what the tours would be like, and was very flexible in letting people switch. In the end, I don't think anyone was shut out of a tour they wanted. Glitch. Of course there was a glitch. Not water levels this time. Instead, an unusually wide cargo vessel further along in the river had an accident and destroyed its propeller. The result was that it blocked the river, backing up river boats on either side that could not get past it. We were bound for Regensburg when this happened. So it became questionable how and whether we would get there, as Scenic was being told that it could be as long as a week before it could be moved. So, while JJ and his team struggled to find arrangements for us without knowing where we would wind up, we wandered. We tied up once in front of a manufacturing plant of some kind, and I watched during breakfast as someone who looked like a local official appeared to be ordering us out of there. Sure enough, minutes later the gangplank was taken back up and off we went again, in search of a place to dock. We spent much of one night and the next morning sailing backwards (an interesting challenge for Captain and crew) toward Passau, the last port we'd left. Indeed, we wound up docking back in the Passau region, in the place where we had last docked. We were then bussed to our Regensburg-based excursions. Because of the increased bus riding times (in fact, the Regensburg walking tour was supposed to have been a step-off-the-ship-and-you're-there tour), a lot of passengers opted to stay on the ship. In fact, the bus time was, at 90 minutes, an hour less than JJ had estimated. We had a very small group with a plethora of guides, and a wonderful day. The disappointment from all of this was that we missed Nuremberg, which we were supposed to tour after disembarkation there. But we had to disembark from Passau instead. Oddly, though, not a word was said about the missing Nuremberg tour. We were left to realize on our own that this would not happen. Post-cruise. We had taken Scenic's post-cruise extension to Prague, and were glad we did. We were bussed to the Marriott, which was in a great location within walking distance to the Old City, the Lesser City, and the New City. The hotel was standard Marriott, though with lots of noisy construction going on. Fortunately, the noise ended in the evening, so we only got about an hour of it each evening, though it did accompany breakfast a couple of days. The evening we arrived, we were taken for an orientation walk around the neighborhood. The next morning was an excellent walking tour, and then the guides made themselves available that afternoon and the next day to help us plan our free time. Our guide in Prague was superb, with great stories and histories to share. She also was good with restaurant recommendations and recommendations for shops for particular purposes. My only complaint was that the group was much too large--nearly 40 people per guide--so movement was hampered. We could hear well, though, thanks to walkie-talkies, and the guide was very skillful in making sure we were all there. Read Less

Our ship was changed from Ruby to Jade - same layout, same design, same cabin. The cabin was spacious enough. Lots of storage. Having the balcony window move up and down allowed for fresh air and picture taking. Found the wine selection wanting. Not terribly impressed with the meals. One that stood out: the herb encrusted lamb was delicious. Ordering off the breakfast and lunch menus took quite a while. Mixed messages from servers: 'no hamburger at lunch only at dinner'; another would say 'any time'. The burgers were very good. Most passengers used the buffet for breakfast and lunch. Shore excursions were well presented and executed. What a variety! Going through all the locks from Budapest to Amsterdam was fascinating and interesting at the same time. Some were narrower than others and consequently the ship bumped against the sides - what a way to wake up in the wee hours of the morning! Read Less

This cruise was highly recommended by several friends who had done many scenic and other cruises. Obviously scenic came out on top and this was the cruise we chose - with absolutely no regrets. The fact that we had to change ships because of low water levels only added to the adventure. The next down side was the comparison of ships. The Jasper was every bit as luxurious as anticipated, but the Jade was older, a little more tired and our wardrobes not as friendly! ( in need of some maintenance!) but overall it was the people on board who made it. The crew on the Jasper spoilt us to the extent that the crew on the Jade needed a day or so to catch up - and they did. Our cruise director Szylvia was an exceptional bonus and an absolute gem. She made our trip the 5 star success it was. The organisation, communication and management of such a large group of people in a situation which was sometimes stressful was amazing. Most of us got sick (colds) and changing boats etc was all managed with smooth seamless efficiency. Szylvia made our trip. Thank you. The food was great and everything supplied in abundance. We are already planning our next cruise. Thank you again. Read Less

The most relaxing active vacation ever! Sounds strange but it’s true; active because there is often something going on or somewhere to be, relaxing because Scenic takes care of all the logistics. It truly was all inclusive; no tipping, even on the airport transfers from/to home. Scenic bills itself as 5 star all-inclusive so we were disappointed to read in the information booklet that “if we received exceptional service” we were free to add a gratuity. Sorry, for what we paid, exceptional service was expected! 68 locks, 803 bridges so it’s definitely a worry about low/high water levels. We were very fortunate as a few days after we passed Passau ship swaps happened. Cabin 206 was perfectly situated, bed was very comfortable, roomy shower with rain head and hand held shower wands. Ample storage; everything was soft close (cupboards, drawers, cabinets, toilet seat). Very impressed with the number of outlets. Great lighting and mirrors make the cabin seem very spacious. We had a couple of minor things that needed attention and, within a half hour, the issues were resolved. Excellent service. The individual blankets had not been washed prior to our arrival so we made sure not to put them back in their zippered pouch so that our cabin steward was aware they had been used and needed cleaning. Our cabin steward was excellent – the best we’ve ever had. They make a big deal about your “butler” but, other than introducing herself the first day, we had no interaction with her at all. That being said, we didn’t have any need for the included services or they were provided by other individuals. Toiletries were great. Hair dryer, Nordic walking sticks, large umbrella, ear plugs, even a long handled shoe horn were provided. Undecided if the sun lounge was worth the additional cost; rafting and/or facing public areas often left us unable to enjoy it but it does make for a larger cabin. Breakfast and lunch buffets were excellent; lots of variety and the breads at lunch were awesome. The pastry chef was outstanding; apple turnovers, croissants and other breakfast pastries were light and flaky. I absolutely loved the butter machine which provided a fresh portion of butter at the touch of a button; definitely a hit with all guests. There are fresh made options available for both breakfast and lunch. Smoothies were tasteless as was the “flavoured” water served at the Late Riser Breakfast in the River Café. We had lunch served in River Café when we opted out of the excursion to Salzburg and, while the selection was fine, the food was lukewarm. The same situation with the Sun Deck BBQ. The warming trays just don’t do the job. They do not serve “fresh” milk and we normally drink milk at lunch and dinner. Opted not to visit Portobellos as we didn't like the menu (beef cheeks!) and we don't drink alcohol so the wine pairing wasn't of interest. Very small portions for dinner. Even by Canada Food Guide recommendations Scenic portions fall far below the minimum requirements. Vegetables and starch are almost non existent! My husband has a small appetite and TWICE he woke up hungry during the night; NEVER happened before in his 72 years! There are limited selections; two cold appetizer options, two hot appetizer options, one soup, one meat, one fish and one vegetarian. Fortunately they have “always available” options. Soups were “made with love” but would definitely benefit from being made with cream. They were watery despite being called “cream of”. My husband said the soup spoons were more like shovels and would come in handy digging in the garden. Meal descriptions left much to be desired and were often not an accurate depiction of what the meal really was. We only ordered room service once and the meal was delivered promptly and the food was piping hot. I have menus and pictures of the meals at: https://www.flickr.com/gp/22259946@N08/Fi6264 With the exception of one employee who twice refused to take an order for coffee in two different venues on two different days to two different people (he just pointed and said “self-serve”) everyone was friendly, efficient and eager to please. There was wonderful interaction between staff members and a very warm environment. Some great moves were witnessed on disco night! Our cruise director Richard (distant relation of Richard the Lionheart) was entertaining, knowledgeable and energetic. Miljenko, Restaurant Manager, was charming and always willing to assist with food concerns. Mario Alberto, Hotel Manager, was an absolute delight and ran the operations with a warm smile and a firm commitment to guest satisfaction. The reception staff were wonderful; always a ready smile and can do attitude. There were 148 guests; Australia, New Zealand, Canada, U.K., a few Americans and one couple from Curacao. It was a great group with everyone having an enjoyable time without any drunken behaviour in spite of the included alcohol. Unfortunately a few guests didn’t make use of the hand sanitizer, complimentary water, shampoo and shower gel and preferred “au naturale” to using deodorant. Opal Lounge had ample, comfortable seating but the very low black tables were a hazard at night as both a tripping issue and trying to find the surface to place your glass. I loved the glass straws! Being non-alcohol drinkers we would have appreciated frozen mocktails. Hot chocolate, teas and coffee available 24/7 in the Opal Lounge was excellent. We were pleased with the offered entertainment. We enjoyed listening to David; a talented musician. The excursions were well organized and stress free. We especially enjoyed the Palais Liechtenstein concert and we have NO interest in classical music. It was definitely an experience not to be missed as was the visit and feast at Marksburg Castle. The banquet is for everyone, the Castle Tour is definitely NOT for anyone with mobility issues or a fear of falling. We really enjoyed the high lock experience, it was so well done with dramatic music added! The highlight for us was sitting on the Sun Deck soaking in the passing scenery between Koblenz and Rudesheim. Life just doesn’t get any better than this. The Scenic Taylormade app was hit and miss on excursions but the City Guides and River View options were excellent. We would rate our experience a 10 but, value for money, 7-8. We’re glad we ticked this experience off our bucket list but with the high cost and the anxiety over water levels it’s not something we’ll do again. Read Less

We have been ocean cruising for over thirty years, taking at least 2-3 cruises a year, but never been on a river cruise. Looking back over the whole trip I doubt I would do it again. The ship was nice, we had a Royal Suite on the top deck which was ‘compact’ , you couldn’t sit on the toilet without hitting your knees on the toilet roll holder. The dining was excellent, the food variable, well cooked and stylishly presented. The Head Chef and Dining Room Manager where always available to us and extraordinary helpful and the Hotel Manager, Mr Mauricio ( I think) even shared his private supply of Piri Piri oil with me. Richard, our cruise director , was amazing. He is definitely the best cruise director I have come across in over 30 years. Always pleasant, unflappable and very amusing as well as highly efficient. He made our trip. The bar service was generally good. If I had a criticism it was that there was insufficient waiter service on the pool deck when we were sailing. Regarding the tours the concert in the Liechtenstein Palace was definitely the highlight. Some of the other were just too long. When we stayed onboard the day we had to make an unscheduled stop because of low water levels, it was unfortunate that the pool was out of action for cleaning on a day when the temperatures were 38=40C surely that could have been changed to accommodate the circumstances My main complaint was about the hairdresser who had never heard of a hot brush, didn’t have any rollers and unbelievably ran out of hairspray. I asked her why she didn’t tell me before I went, or even give me chance to go to my cabin and collect my own but she had no answer for that. As we had been moored up all day, on an unscheduled stop, I asked her why she hadn’t gone off the ship to the Aldi supermarket just across from the gangway but she told me she hadn’t had time. Firstly, I can’t believe that as I had been able to change my appointment as she had spaces, and because of the unscheduled stop and the adjusted tour timings other people had cancelled their appointments, and secondly i’m sure if she had asked Richard or the hotel manager they could have arranged for someone to fetch some. Surely she must have been aware several days before that she was running out or down to her last can? Read Less

We chose Scenic as we were looking for a cruise that was 100% all inclusive. It turned out to be the right decision as we never once had to pull out our wallet. The only additional cost was a massage! Scenic lived up to everything we expected. Rooms were excellent and the addition of a small balcony was great on mornings when we wanted room service rather than eating at the restaurant. Food was very good with incredible selection. Tours had enough variety that it appeared there was something for everyone. For people considering a river cruise for the first time here are some pointers that I was not aware of and had I known it would have made the experience even better: 1. Don't take the top deck for a room if you are travelling in the summer. Air Conditioning works better on the lower level. Rooms closer to the back of the boat are louder due to the engine. If you like white noise then they are great. Rooms closer to the front you hear everyone passing your room. 2. Do your research on destinations along the river you are cruising on along with tours. Some of our tours were two hours bus ride before you got to your destination. My assumption was destinations would be a virtual walk off the boat. (I understand the Rhone is more like this). When it was it was a walk off the boat such as Durnstein it was fantastic! 3. Compare docking stops. On the Danube we sailed by Passau. It looked fantastic but Scenic does not stop there...… Viking does. 4. Understand how often you can be up on the sun deck on the river cruise. Depending on low bridges or locks you are limited to just the lounge area below. This is when you really want a balcony ….. or pick a different river. The channel between the Danube and Nuremburg there are many locks. Although interesting we loved being up top so that is a disappointment. 5. On Scenic you would do a tour and the boat would continue down the Danube and you would pick it up later in the day. One day we passed on the tours and enjoyed just cruising. Again look at the schedule..... this may have been my favourite day! Ultimately identify how much you want to be busy or relax and choose the right cruise based on this. 6. Beware that the success of a cruise can be very dependent not only on the staff but also who you have the luck of cruising with. With a minimum of less than 200 people if the group is fun..... you will have fun. We met many ships along our cruise and it became obvious we were very lucky with the group we had. 7. Cruise success is also dependent on whether the water is at the right height. Check months and get some statistics from your travel agents to try and ensure that you will be on the water for 100% of your trip...… or book last minute like we did. Read Less

We chose this cruise to get a good overview of the countries along the upper Danube. We arrived in Budapest a day prior to embarkation, in order to have more time to explore the city. We stayed at the Marriott, which is the preferred hotel for Scenic. We were picked up at the airport and transferred to the hotel, and then picked up at the hotel and driven to the Crystal. Everything went so smoothly, once we arrived, we were invited to enjoy a drink in the lounge and get our room cards when ready. This was a great way to avoid a lineup of everyone in the lobby. The food and service on the ship was excellent (although my mom, with whom I was travelling, felt that the food she had on a Caribbean cruise with Celebrity was just a touch better). The choices for excursions were plentiful and varied, although I found that with a few of them, there was either not enough free time, or too much free time, depending on how large the area was to explore. In Vienna, we ended up taking the hop on, hop off bus tour in order to see more of the city, as we had free time, and one of the stops was right in front of our ship at the pier. Our cabin (110) was fine for sleeping, although the shower was far too small. I can't imagine how a larger person could even move! The bed was comfortable and the cabin crew came in twice a day, once in the morning to clean and then again to turn down and leave the next day's schedule. Disembarkation was also quite smooth, and they even provided a tour of Nuremberg which was not listed as part of the trip. The also dropped us at our privately arranged hotel at the end of the tour, which was great, as we had expected we would have to arrange our own transport from the ship. Read Less

Scenic provides a high end cruising experience and if you need to, start saving your money and book a cruise! We chose Scenic at the suggestion of friends, with whom we travelled. As people who have never been on a cruise (either river cruise or ocean cruise), we were excited about the all-inclusive nature of Scenic’s cruises. We were not disappointed. From embarkation until the penultimate day of the cruise, we had an excellent time. The boat itself had a luxurious feel. All the common areas were very clean and comfortable. Our room was spacious and well appointed. But what made the cruise exceptional were the staff. Everyone from the room attendants, Butlers, serving staff, bartenders, Hotel Manager, and Restaurant Manager were all friendly, kind, and helpful. They were able to accommodate dietary issues without hesitation. If the room attendant saw that you prefer certain items in the minibar, they would ensure you were properly stocked for the next day. We appreciated the hard work the staff did to keep the boat maintained at a high quality during the cruise. The level of detail from the staff was astounding. We will always remember the staff with fond memories. Shoutouts to Marica, Zania, Sijlvia, Snez, Milan, Dejon, Branislav, Vuk, Martin, Marko, Mauricio, Nemanja, Milos, Alex and Stan! They were the stars of the cruise. Special mention to Birgitta, our guide in the Wachau Valley; Wanda, our guide in Cesky Krumlov; and Dominic, our guide in Nuremberg. As with most things, there were issues that were out of Scenic’s control. While river levels were good, there were issues with the lock system on the Danube. The Cruise Director, Beate, was able to troubleshoot issues with ease; however, we took issue with her plans for disembarkation. High water levels on the Danube meant that we could not make it to Nuremberg. Instead, we were let off about an hour away. We understood why we had to disembark outside of Nuremberg, but we took issue with how the Cruise Director planned transportation for those who were to stay in Nuremberg after the cruise. Beate scheduled us and five other couples to disembark at 7am and take a coach ride to the Nuremberg airport, as we assumed some of the couples would fly out that day. From there, we were to make our own way into the city of Nuremberg. Whilst on the coach, we learned that none of the six couples had flights from Nuremberg and that the Cruise Director essentially kicked us off the boat at 7am and had us escorted to the airport when none of us had flights. We were so disappointed. Other passengers headed to Munich or Prague were able to remain on the boat until late morning. Fortunately, our guide Dominic decided to bypass the airport and take us all into Nuremberg city centre. From there, we checked into our hotel. In addition, Dominic had time to give us a tour of Nuremberg’s Old Town. It was early morning on a bank holiday, so it was like we had the city to ourselves. What was such a disappointing end to a fabulous cruise was saved by Dominic. Read Less

Had been on Ama (wonderful), Uniworld (good) and wanted to try Scenic. Also wanted Danube cruise that went to Salzburg. The service was excellent, room kept very clean, and excursions good. Wine far better than we were expecting but food was a disappointment. Beate, the cruise director went out of her way to help everyone but she was leaving at the end of our cruise for a private job opportunity. Some of the excursions groups were too big and they should have hired another guide or 2 to keep the groups smaller. The new system for the headset didn’t work well all the time, but that was due to too large groups. The biggest disappointment was the food. Breakfast was a 10 but lunch and dinner fell short. Sometimes the food was lukewarm. The veal schnitzel was almost inedible. There were no wow factors. The salmon and tenderloin that you could always order were under seasoned. The gala night had Canadian lobster tail and beef Wellington and it was very good. Then the closing night was turkey. The turkey was good but it doesn’t seem like a luxury dinner on the last night of a luxury cruise. They could Improve by doing a grill on deck with bratwurst and cheeseburgers! Soups were generally pretty good. Desserts were average except for ice cream. We are excellent home cooks so food is very important to us. I will stick with Ama for future cruises. Or try Crystal. But Scenic and Uniworld are out. If you are a foodie, go with Ama. I’ve attached pictures of menus and wine lists and daily plans. I wish I could have received this information in advance so hope it helps others. Mark, the musician, was excellent. The dancers were ok. The concert in Vienna was very nice. Portobellos had excellent appetizers and desserts but mediocre entree. Have to submit photos separately because they don’t attach from an iPad. Read Less

We chose the Scenic line thru a recommondation from our travel agent and also friends. There were low river issues before we left, but there was no talk of postponing or cancelling. We started off our holiday with a 10 day bus tour of Poland. We chose to pick up the river cruise in Budapest to have a relaxing 2 weeks after busing for 10 days. We were on the Pearl for 4-5 days, switched to the Opal for a few days, then bused to a location, missing a major portion of the cruise we where looking forward to. Then switched ships to the Amber. It was not relaxing after the first 4 days, Constantly packing up, unpacking and meeting new crews. The Positives: Each ship was a little nicer each time The Crew was wonderful and accommodating The Amber crew was really taxed with cleaning up after the guests switching to the Opal and preparing to accommodate the Opal guests. We all needed a holiday after that. Read Less

We picked Scenic for a few reasons. Good ratings for the cruise line. We liked the itinerary. Would have been better ratings from us if we had been able to stay on the ship we had booked. This alternate ship (the Pearl)had a wonderful crew. The crew on the 2nd ship seemed to find us an inconvenience. This is understandable since it was inconvenient for us as well. We were required to change ships for one night due to the low water levels in the Danube. I can't imagine all the extra work that means for the crew. The cruise director (Richard) was great. The worst thing about moving the ship was leaving the hearing devices on board. So we were without those fantastic devices for a full day. The guide we had that day (Regensburg?) was great, but very soft spoken. I would have had a more interesting time if I could have heard her. Read Less

We chose Scenic because of it’s good reviews and that it was all inclusive. Communication from ScenicUSA left much to be desired. We cruised with mostly Canadians and Brits. They were all offered an extension in Prague after disembarking the ship. We were never offered this option. Thus, we had arranged 3 days in Munich on our own at the end of the cruise. In the end, this was fine as we loved Minuch. The Danube was at at all time low and our original boat, the Amber, never made it to Budapest. The Pearl was fine and the staff did an awesome job of dealing with low water levels and making the best of plans that had to change. We didn’t get to spend any downtime in Reggensburg and never made it to Nuremburg. Breakfast and lunch was boring and not that good. One guy making omlettes for 160 passengers just doesn’t cut it. Dinner was mediocre and a couple of times my entrees were not good. Dining is definitely the weak link on the Pearl. All-in-all, we had a great time and met some super people. The reviews that say you don’t need to dress for dinner are wrong. Women should bring 1 dress, some dressy shoes, gitzy jewelry, etc. I was always under-dressed. Read Less

Nothing was too much trouble and everything ran like clockwork. The dining and bar staff were exceptional as was the young lady who cleaned our room We sailed from Budapest to Amsterdam for 15 days. My only complaint and this is a huge one was about the location of our stateroom. Never ever take the last suite on the middle deck. My husband called it the cell from hell. And we became very sleep deprived due to the boat engine being right next to our verandah We did complain however the boat was full so no change of cabin was available Excursion and entertainment was super. The food was tasty and the wine ran freely My husband loved being able to check a bike out and ride when he wanted to. A lovely trip minus the cabin Read Less

We had taken 3 previous cruises with Scenic and the cruises had been beyond reproach in all phases. On this cruise it was the little things that were missing. We shouldn't have to ask to have to have the shower gel replaced. We had to change ships because of low water levels and we left an apple Tablet pen behind in our cabin. The Cruise Director appeared unimpressed and unconcerned about attempting to have the pen retrieved and/or sent home for us. It was apparent that no attempt was made to even determine if the pen was found. On our last night we waited for 2 hours to get a cold meal. What was supposed to be tenderloin was like shoe leather. Again, the Cruise Director did not seem to care. When the issue was raised with the Chef he offered to by us a drink. He had to be informed it was an all inclusive cruise. Poor employee awareness. Our butlers on both ships were excellent. They tended to our needs in a timely and professional manner. The Bar and service staff were also very good. The Bar quickly learned what your beverage of choice was and would often have it waiting for you. The entertainment that was provide on a nightly basis was superb. The Brass Band and the Schuhplattler Folk Dance group were especially good. The DJ on the Jade was terrific. He engaged the audience and had everyone up and dancing. The DJ on the Jasper was lame. He made no attempt to engage his audience and was not up to Scenic's usually high standards. As always, the multiple excursions at each Port of Call, met or exceeded Scenic's standards. To have multiple excursions included is one of Scenic's major pluses. Scenic's no tipping policy is also an advantage as far as I am concerned. Overall, we enjoyed the cruise, but it was certainly not up to Scenic's usual standards. Neglecting the little things makes the difference between a 5 Star and a 3 Star enterprise. We will sail with Scenic again in the hope that the issues we encountered on this cruise were an aberration and not a sign of things to come. Read Less

The ship was beautiful. The common rooms were large and inviting! The restaurant food was good 3.5/4 out of 5, but the waitstaff was amazing!!!! The food presentation was lovely! The portions were good sized, meaning non-American portions which was a good thing! The alcohol was top brands and a nice to even a heavy pour. The wine was lovely at every meal. The dining experience was great! The staff made every effort to help you find a wine you liked at dinner, but usually this wasn't necessary as their picks were terrific. Our boat was approx 1/4 Australians, 1/4 Americans, 1/4 Canadians and 1/4 Brits. It was a great mix and we loved meeting people from all over! The excursions were great! One negative was that I would have appreciated less time on a bus to get to a destination for an excursion. Sometimes up to 2 hours each way. When we were in Vienna, instead of touring Vienna we bussed an hour or so away. We had time to explore Vienna on our own time, but it would have been nice to have a guided tour. Another great thing: E Bikes! So one day the boat cruised for 22 miles / 35 km and passengers had the option of riding with guides that distance using Ebikes! They were great, even though the terrain was fairly level, if you fell a little behind, you could turn on the battery feature and speed up to catch up! Also, one thing to consider when thinking about a river cruise. Water level. We didn't think of this. The Danube is a shallow river and when we hit the port of Passau, Germanry, we were grounded. The Danube was only 30 cm deep as Europe was experiencing a bit of a draught. We couldn't finish the cruise. So we stayed in Passau instead of continuing onto Regensburg and Nuremberg. The staff are great when this happens and they just go with it, but for the passengers, it's kind of a disappointment! One reason we chose this line is that it was an all inclusive. No tipping, no charge for excursions, alcohol, etc. You know.... There truly were no additional charges. They did have massage therapist on staff as well as some spa items, but it wasn't really pushed or advertised. Evening entertainment was a wonderful pianist who entertained those who stuck around in the lounge. A couple of nights, the cruise company brought in local dancing talents which was fun to see. On advise from our travel agent and excellent reviews we decided to travel through Europe on a river purpose built vessel and experience this fantastic trip ourselves , booked a year in advance to secure a cabin on deck 3 ,before the actual cruise we booked through Scenic into the Marriott ( outstanding hotel) and the view on the Danube river to give us enough time to explore the city for a couple of days The day of embarkation , smooth and hassle free, disembarkation in Amsterdam likewise with transfers well organised by our outstanding cruise director Patrik . The Ship is what it is , modern and clean with excellent and very professional and friendly staff who do their best to make this a great experience. We didn't use the room service as we preferred to use the dining facilities in the main mess room, that was our choice , my guess is the cabin (333) is fairly compact but well appointed but not great for in cabin dining :-) The set up of these ships , only one dining room to accomodate all passengers for meals and if the bell rings for ' Chow time' people seem to rush down to secure their seats and if you decide to enter a bit later you feel sort of stranded , Scenic try to sort this out by using their Porto Bello area in the main lounge as well , this helps to a certain extend and this should be done every time , and am sure the hotel staff is aware of this . Dining is okay , I am not a complainer by all means, on a scale of 1-10, cannot give it more than 7.5- 8 , their is choice however , but would love the dining degustation experience that was offered to us at the ' Captains Table ' on every occasion and for all guests, as is the Porto Bello fine dining experience . Entertainment , love our pianist Marco Di Napoli Shore activities , out of this world ! Well organised , loved it 100 % Do I want to make another cruise with Scenic ? Probably as a foody and wine lover perhaps France , make no mistake the German and Austrian wines are excellent too. Read Less

We have travelled from Amsterdam to Budapest and wanted to see the remainder of the Danube. We found the area very different, not as interesting but the cruise itself was enjoyable. The area has seen it share of communism and war. Plenty of bullet holes throughout the region. Budapest and Bucharest are both fascinating cities although the remainder of the owns leave a lot to be desired. The excursions offered were not the best but more than likely there isn't much available. There was quite a mixture of passengers from numerous countries which always adds interest to the cruise. A note to anyone travelling on Scenic. It is suggested a jacket for the men but I saw only two gentlemen bother. It is a more relaxed atmosphere with smart casual dinner dress. The hotels provided both before and after were excellent including the transfers to and from the airport and ship. All in all a good cruise and we would travel with Scenic again. Read Less

We chose Scenic in part, from a recommendation by our Travel Agent (M. Gaw of Vision Travel) and a local presentation by the company. We wanted a slightly ‘up-scale’ cruise. We liked the idea of a European river cruise to minimize our time in coaches and not having to change hotels every night or two with all that implies. The number of people on the ship was to our liking. It is a group tour done “better”. See fewer countries but at a better pace. This particular cruise fit into our dates available, length of cruise (8 days) with the 3-day Prague extension but also, the trip went to an area we have wanted to explore for some time (Austria/Czech). The flexibility of the included excursions and the availability of E-bikes were an added feature we very much liked. In addition, the help from our travel agent to make sure all the deatils were included and explained along with other factors (early arrival, organization of air travel, etc.), made our confirmation of this choice easy. The use of Marriott hotels at both locations (Budapest and Prague) were great. The whole trip, from the early arrival to departure went extremely smoothly. We were extremely happy with the Scenic Jasper ship but more importantly, in our opinion, the crew were fabulous from the cruise director through the wait staff, were the best. Our cabin was perfect for us. The quality of the food but especially the bar were ‘top-notch’ with real champagne, great domestic and imported wines and a good selection of single malt. Cabin and cruise service(s) were teriffic even if we ‘under-used’ these amenities. We met some very nice and interesting people from around the world and were happy to be on board with other French and English Canadians, people from Great Britian and the USA. The excursion choices were a treat and the ‘guides’ friendly and knowledgeable. Their local knowledge reflected pride in their contries/cities which we very much liked. For the most part, they went out of their way on each excurison to ensure we had a pleasant day. The highlight for us was the Ebike trip but it was over too soon and could use a bit of ‘tweaking’ for a better day. True, we were perhaps too many people in one group (38). It may have been better in two (or more) groups if sufficient guides were available but all in all, we really enjoyed the Ebike tour. One negative for us was the slight rush in between and during the excurisons but we understand that they wanted to cover as much as possible where we would rather see less but spend more time. While we did not travel with children (and none were on board), we would suggest that theis mode of travel would suit kids to broaden their horizons on other cultures. The Prague extension was a treat. While a rough entry to our downtown hotel due to traffic (again the Marriott), once we settled, in it was perfectly situated to explore the old town and all that it has to offer. We would definitely recommend the Prague extension. Except for the (sometimes) ‘sea of humanity’, it was still a fantastic place to visit. As you can expect, we highly recommend this trip and this company and really found little to no fault. We would definitely take another Scenic crusie to explore other areas of Europe but maybe other parts of the world. Read Less

Was told it was 5 star but it was let down by poor cold or inedible food . On the whole the ship is great , drinks ,staff ,trips and entertainment all very good especially the cruise director who was brilliant . Cabins very well appointed and places visited very good . Would recommend if the food had been up to standard but it certainly wasn’t a standard we had expected. The trips were extremely well organised with lots of special extras , the guides all very well informed . The staff on board friendly and helpful and the evening entertainment was all local people from wherever we where. The drinks are extensive with small fridge in cabins restocked daily. However the cruise was badly let down by the food , even the special dining at portobello and table Rive was not brilliant . This all spoiled what would have been a brilliant cruise. Read Less

All inclusive. Choices for tours. Great reviews. Free time too long. Would be nice to be able to have bus to return to ship. We felt rushed at meal times as staff very busy trying to serve everyone. Food was mostly good but at times steak and fish undercooked. All meals cooked on rare side. We had no choice. Alcohol was good and many choices. Our cabin very small but beds were not easy to sleep on. Twins are very narrow. Maid service was excellent. Cruise director was excellent and very organized. Massage therapist was good. We didn’t use the butler service as we had nowhere to sit to have a coffee.. Tried to upgrade but only suite left and when we went to see it it was being used to store all the dirty laundry bags. We were not prepared to spend 3500 Euros for something we couldn’t even see. The tailormades were not always reliable. Would not always charge. I would recommend Scenic as we were well looked after and the friendliness of the staff made for a great holiday. Read Less

All the staff were wonderful, couldn't do enough for us.No matter what we asked they could sort it out or do it for us. The rooms were very nice and a very good thing for us was we could turn off the aircon and open the window. The room was keeped clean and tidied every day, the drinks and snacks Replemished every day. Teas and coffee was brought to the room any time we wanted some. It was very nice to have a washing and Ironing credit. This was the first time we have been on a all inclusive cruise, it was so much nicer not being having to put our hands in our pockets every time we wanted something.I know it was covered in the overal price but it was just nice not having to carry money around all day every day. We did find the meals were to much and by the time they finished it was to late a time for us to be eating. The stay in Budapest before we sailed was very good; that Marriott was excellent and very professionally run. Embarkation was smooth. The ship was pretty well all that we expected it to be, except for the so-called library which was a joke. The cabin was all that was required, well designed, fitted and maintained. We do not like buffets for dinner (as distinct from breakfast) but the first night was good for a buffet. All other dinners were good to very good, though the portions were no larger than needed and we thought that the choice of either pudding or cheese rather than pudding and cheese was odd - particularly in Portobello's. The wine was far less good than the food. That on the first night was poor, on other nights it was acceptable - apart from the Friday, when it was undrinkable. Service was generally good - better in the bar than in the restaurant. Of the entertainment, the regional dance troop were very good, the second dance night, which involved audience participation, was off-putting. We declined the other entertainments on offer for classic films that we had somehow never seen. Nicola, the tour manager, was excellent and incredibly helpful; top marks. The following criticism in not of him but of what was not provided. There was no historian/ geographer/ cultural expert to bring the experience of the tour and the relationship between the places that we passed or visited together. This was the significant weakness of the tour. The excursions that we took were of a good standard, and our guide in Belgrade deserves particular mention as outstanding. In our view, the visit to Varna was unbalanced. The Museum is quite simply outstanding and justifies a minimum of an hour for even the most superficial visit. We opted out of the visit to the town centre and spent twice that long in the museum and left much undone. As an aside, the lunch in the fake ship was not that great. The best lunch on a visit was in Bucharest; light, simple and cooked perfectly. The Hilton in Bucharest was not a patch on the Marriott in Budapest. The room was basically very good, but maintenance - especially in the bathroom - was poor. The dinner, an early, very mediocre buffet in a too small, noisy room was a low point. Whoever was responsible had no understanding of the space and layout required for a buffet for the number of people to be fed. The staff were totally untrained and mainly uninterested. Breakfast was OK. We had lunch in the outside restaurant associated with the Hilton and we can report that the serving staff in that restaurant were very professional (we obviously had the C or D team the previous evening), but that the kitchen repeated the mediocre performance of the previous evening. We have organised tours ourselves and know how difficult it is to get good hotels for large parties - so the Hilton may have been the best available - but keep on looking. We are not sure whether we should go again with Scenic. I think that if we took another river cruise we should try another company's offering first. In case you note the apparent inconsistency, our other cruises have been ocean rather than river cruises. Paul and Birte Kelly Read Less

We chose this cruise over a year ago for a 60th birthday and and 27th Anniversary celebration based on on-line reviews and advertised 5 star dining. We paid up to be on the Diamond Deck so we could participate in the "La Rive" degustation dinner experience. I'm not sure what is going on with Scenic but the food product served at dinner is 3 star at best and service is seriously understaffed. Each waiter had about 24 guests and were expected to take orders, deliver, clear tables, etc. Everyone on the ship headed down to dinner at the same time - if you came later you might never get your meal as each course is served like at a banquet. First all orders from all the waiters tables are taken before delivery to the kitchen then everyone gets their appetizer followed by soup, entree and desert. All courses need to be ordered at the same time. Several times I ordered two appetizers and no soup course but never got the second appetizer because they had moved on to the soup course. I gave up on asking because it just impacted everyone else and the rest of service. The farther your waiter was from the kitchen (which was in the back of the ship) the longer everything took as he had to keep running back and forth. There were no waitstations in the middle or front of the ship for bussing tables so waiters had to carry everything to the back of the ship. Our ship butlers also worked the restaurant at dinner but did not assist the waiters unless asked by the restaurant or hotel manager-no teamwork but seemed to be a pecking order of who did what. Our hotel and restaurant manager worked their tails off to pick up the lack and ensure customer satisfaction. They couldn't make up though for the poor quality food products, most apparent in seafood products which were often just inedible. Fish filets OK but very thin. We were hesitant to order anything with seafood after the first couple experiences. Shrimp dishes were these tiny overcooked, frozen product with maybe 1 or 2 slightly larger prawns. If a dish said lobster, you needed a magnifying glass to find it. The two delightful ladies serving wine and drinks also served beverages in the lounge at all other times. They each worked half of the dining room so had about 80 guests each to serve. The hotel and restaurant manager went overboard to try to make our experience better once we had expressed our preferences but their hands were tied by the poor food products provided by Scenic. Not a good area to try to cut costs as dining is a big part of any cruise. We have been on many ocean cruises and never had such hit and miss food experiences. La Rive was supposed to be a degustation experience so we schedule for the 60th birthday celebration. To start, we were served about 1/4 glass of champagne - we had to ask to get a full glass which took some time because they evidently had to find and open another bottle. We were served an entire small boiled potato about the size of an egg with a teeny portion of caviar on top as our amuse bouche. Really - a boiled potato? There were three items on the next plate which we were told accounted for three of our courses. Although there was a foie gras item, it was only about 1/2 bite. We all had the filet for entree which was very good and saved the meal. The staff and cruise director did serve a very nice birthday cake and gave my husband a box of chocolates which was very nice and fun. I would not pay up again to be on the Diamond Deck just to dine at La Rive. The table is at the back of the main restaurant so nothing special there. There is nothing very special about the food; diners in the main restaurant were also served filet although it was described as beef tenderloin. It was hard to hear the butlers describing food items. Portabello's dining was for the anniversary celebration. This is held in the area in front of the bar in the lounge. One of us ordered the seafood pasta which we had to send back - the seafood tasted terrible. Again, a very nice cake and anniversary celebration. it was nice to sit somewhere besides the dining room. The cruise director, Cathy, was fabulous. She was very organized and helpful to all. The tours and special experiences were great. Although we did like the Salzburg tour and Sound of Music experience, I'm not sure we'd go again as it was 2 hours there and 2 hours back in a bus. We would also like to have stayed longer at some of the ports either before or after our tours to have more free time then we were given to explore on our own. FYI, tours generally leave after breakfast around 9 then back to ship for lunch and maybe an hour or so free time if you didn't have it already after the tour. Then the ship would leave sometime in the afternoon. Or we would dock late morning, have lunch on ship then take the tour. Seldom long days like on an ocean cruise. Lunch and Breakfast are Buffett. Egg station at breakfast and carving station at lunch. Good wines available anytime. Gym is very small. No weight equipment to speak of. Yoga at 7AM only in the lounge. We enjoyed our Deluxe Balcony room in the center of the ship and the enclosed balcony window that could be lowered in good weather. It made the cabin seem bigger. The closet doors slid over each other so you couldn't open one without closing the other. Seemed like we were constantly sliding the doors back and forth. Nice L'Occitane products. We heard complaints from guests at the back of the ship in the Royal Panorama Suites that they were often disturbed by engine noise into the night. We had some early morning noise when crew was setting up chairs on the top deck above us. Don't know why they couldn't have done this work after we left the ship for our tours instead of early morning. We'd skip Diamond Deck if we were to take Scenic again as upcharge wasn't worth the product delivered. As Scenic was more expensive then other similar cruises, I'm not sure I could recommend to a friend unless the food product and staffing issues at dinner are addressed. Evening dining is a big part of the cruise experience for us. I would like to go to dinner when I want to, be served as though i were in a restaurant not as though I were at a convention banquet where everyone is served the same course at the same time. Scenic could take lessons from Windstar which has ocean ships with similar customer capacity yet is able to serve excellent restaurant style meals and service at three venues nightly. Read Less

Our initial interest was the Strictly Come Dancing aspect and visit ti Spanish Riding School in Vienna. We have never considered cruising before as we prefer independent travel. The overall attraction of a five star vessel and easy travel arrangements all at a reasonable cost was final decider. The ease of booking on phone and excellent service from Scenic booking staff was very helpful. We decided to leave for Amsterdam a day prior and that caused no problem with flights and allowed us to take next flight to Budapest next day.Pick up at airport and transfer to ship was perfect.check in and cabin explanation was also no problem.Cabin although at wrong end of ship to what I expected as 100 yard walk to dining and exit of ship was too far as my wife is not as mobile.Meals and drinks excellent in the main, staff first class and cruise director very helpful.Tours were in the main very good,Vienna evening ,Riding School.Budapest tour, were fabulous.Perhaps as several people did not get to visit horse show consideration of early purchase of tickets would obviate this problem.the guide on this tour on bus was not too helpful re pick up arrangements. The Strictly stars were a delight and were enjoyed by all.Salzburg was lovely but poor communication on mikes and tailor made lessened the trip.many people us included felt the early departure was unnecessary and the tour of Nuremberg then free time not a great idea as our bus then had puncture and caused many distress over flight times although the young lady taking us to airport was terrific. It was recommended by a friend. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the lovely sights we visited. Beautiful scenery and fantastic architecture. Cabin was excellent, food good and staff on ship were excellent. We enjoyed some breathtaking scenery and would not have missed it for anything. I am gluten free and every night the Maitre De would come and speak to me about what I could have on the menu which was suitable. Excellent!!!! The down side was that there was just too much going on with little time for relaxing. Most of the excursions started at 8.00 am which meant setting the alarm clock to get us up before 7.00 am so that we could have breakfast and get ready for the day and be on the coach by 8.00 am. We haven't had to set the alarm clock since we retired six years ago! When we got back in the afternoon we often had to rush to get changed in order to get to the daily "talk" and then go to dinner. Everything was done in a rush and by the end of the week, couples were just dropping out of excursions because they were just too tired from rushing about and just wanted to relax a bit. Also the COACH journeys were chaotic. The guides never seemed to know how many people should be on the coach. Everyone got back to the coach on time but we ended up waiting needlessly for imaginary people because the guides didn't know if everyone was back or not!!! The worst time was the day we went home. We had to be out of our cabin by 8.00 am and then were taken to Nuremberg and told to be back on the coach by 12.00 midday. Everyone was back at the pick up point early but the guide had four people on the list who were definitely not on our coach and we waited 20 minutes for them, knowing there was no-one else to come. By the time we left, the next coach party had turned up at their 12.15 slot for a different coach, and they started getting on our coach causing even more chaos. We then had to rush when we arrived at the airport because of the delay. Why didn't the guides COUNT people on to the coach and given sometimes one guide would take us to a venue and another guide would collect us, why didn't the guides communicate with each other regarding numbers??? One day 15 people went on an excursion and Scenic sent TWO FORTY SEATER COACHES to collect just 15 of us?? Even then the numbers were wrong because two people had decided to stay on the boat and there were just 13 of us which the boat knew about?? On one excursion we were on coach No 2 and were told to go back to coach No 2, but when we arrived back at the coach, the guides were telling us to just get on any old coach!!!! How could numbers possibly be checked in this chaotic way. Things like this spoil the holiday and we would have thought that Scenic would be much more organised than this given they have been operating for years. That said it was a good holiday but could have been more relaxing and organised better. Read Less
