This Scenic Danube river cruise plus Oberammergau was a once in a lifetime event. Almost everything was perfect, and it was a truely five star all inclusive experience. I had a single cabin with a balcony which was especially built for solo travelers. This made the single supplement relatively reasonable. I especially liked the Scenic app which had a personal narrative keyed to each portion of the river and the towns along the bank, including a short history just as we approached. The Oberammergau Passion Play was one of the highlights. Another was the beautiful little town of Cesky Krumlov. The private concert in Vienna at the Leictenstein Palace was wonderful. One serendipitous event was on the final day of the cruise. Due to low water levels, we ended the cruise in Passau instead of Nuremburg. This was just perfect for me, as I have always wanted to attend an organ recital in Saint Stephen's Cathedral in Passau, which I did at noon. Those who wanted to visit Nuremburg were offered a bus tour from Passau.
The cruise director, dining, service, and excursions were all wonderful. Included were all gratuities, with one free laundry and a butler. As I am not used to having a butler, I only asked for one thing. That was to shine my shoes after being on the road for almost one month.
I have only one complaint which I attribute to Scenic having a small administrative back office team. I arrived in Budapest one day prior, and I stayed in the Intercontinental Hotel right in the heart of the city on the banks of the Danube. Next door was the Marriott Hotel. Both of these hotels are often used by Scenic for pre cruise bookings. I could not find out where the Scenic Amber was at port. Neither hotel had any information. Other cruise lines such as Avalon and Viking had tables in the lobby with dedicated staff. After striking out many times, I finally used a cruise mapping app which showed where the Amber was at port, the farthest distance from the city center. After a long, expensive taxi ride, I made it to the ship.
Excellent choice for a relatively less expensive single cabin with a balcony.
