Loved learning about Corps of Discovery Expedition and the river locks

Review for a U.S.A. Cruise on American Empress

The boat was period décor throughout. Having a little balcony was relaxing. I was on a Road Scholar booked trip so excursions were included and well arranged. Learning about the hardships of the Discovery Expedition, it was surprising that the trip was completed. The food in the main dining room was sumptuous with a variety of choices. I personally opted for the River Grill. It was more ...

Not worth the Money, would never go again

Review for a U.S.A. Cruise on Ocean Victory

Hmmm, hard to know where to begin. Embarkation was 2 hours late, we were told a mishap on the locks leading into Lake Ontario caused the ship to be delayed. Okay, I'll buy that one. The ship was 2 hours late going through the Welland Canal, and then another half hour delayed due to a medical issue with an elderly passenger. The Captain insisted on leaving Port Colborne on time, even though ...

Cincinnati? to Memphis

Review for a U.S.A. Cruise on American Countess

Warning: This may be long and a bit rambling, but there are many good things to say about this cruise. DH and I are in our 70's. This was our fourteenth cruise overall, but our first river cruise. Way back in February 2020, we booked a cruise from Memphis to New Orleans on the American Queen. After 4 cancellations, 3 due to COVID and 1 due to Hurricane Ida, we said forget it. AQV gave us ...

Rugged Alaska, enjoying the unimaginable

Picture yourself on your first cruise exploring the inside passage of British Columbia and Alaska on a vessel that makes very little noise and even better responds to wave motion with state of the art stabilizers to keep you safe as you roam this beautiful ship. Our balcony cabin possessed all the amenities of home and our cabin steward, Julio ensured our comfort and safety in his daily cleaning ...

A Cruise for a Nature Lover

Review for a Alaska Cruise on Ocean Victory

This expedition cruise was a gift for my graduation with a degree in Marine Science and it could not have been a more apropos adventure. Being that it is such a small ship, it truly felt that the crew did everything in their power to provide the trip that you wanted. The excursions were created with the local culture, history, and nature in mind. All the excursions that we went on were relaxed, ...

pleasant, easy going cruise

Staff worked very hard to please the guests. The crew continually displayed great enthusiasm and many wore more than one hat--and wore them well. Cabin was comfortable. Dining room food was very good for the most part with enough variety for a week on board. Excursions were somewhat limited due to inclement weather and location. Talented musical entertainers. Our first river cruise after ...

Short Staffed

Review for a North America River Cruise on American Queen

User Avatar

For the first 4 days they were so short staffed that it was buffet only! So sick of eating lukewarm food and mass produced! Then they brought on enough workers to have service, at dinner only! Also all their other boats are fully staffed, heard that from a inside source. One bartender per bar, when they were open, should have had at least two, long lines. Wine offered? Maybe 8 types, and I can ...

Slightly disappointing trip

This cruise was booked in 2019 for sailing in 2020, but eventually we did it in April 2022. New Orleans to Memphis. Check in at the Hilton Riverside the day before, plus Covid test, was straightforward. We did not stay at the Hilton, but on departure day made our way to the Hilton by cab. We had booked the pre-cruise excursion, which was excellent. Amusing and informative guide for a 4 hour ...

Understaffed, overrated, not what was promised

I have emailed, left a note on the website, spoken to escalated customer service rep and requested a call from Mr Waggoner to discuss the MAJOR problems on the cruise. Staff on board were wonderful but woefully understaffed. Dining room normally has 16 servers-only six! Food ALWAYS cold-soups always tepid at best. One stop (can’t call it a port) not planned, had NO services! We needed ...

History, geology and geography abound!

Review for a U.S.A. Cruise on American Empress

We live in the Pacific Northwest, so we are familiar with much of the territory that we visited, but we wanted to see it from the rivers. Our special interests were the history and geology. Since we know the area, we did not take many of the special (extra charge) excursions, but the one that we did take...the jetboat into Hells Canyon...was a highlight of the trip for us! We highly recommend ...
