We were referred to Scenic by our travel agent after looking at several choices, even though we had never heard of it, nor did we know anyone who had taken a Scenic river cruise. My husband and I decided to keep our expectations in check so we would not be disappointed. However, the ship was brand new and pristine, the staff totally customer-oriented, and the all-inclusive river cruise of the Danube was perfect, from the first glass of champagne to the final toast with the captain! Our fellow travelers were nearly half from the US, but couples from Canada, Australia, the U.K., and one mother/daughter pair from New Zealand kept conversations interesting. There were several absolutely beautiful days and a few that were overcast, but the weather never kept us from doing our tours or special events. The beds were fresh, new, and luxurious, with housekeeping coming twice a day to change out towels and make up the rooms. The balconies on our boat were part of the room, with glass that opened and closed with the touch of a button if the weather was chilly. We are now spoiled for any other river cruise, I am afraid. We chose Scenic because we wanted all-inclusive, no surprise bills at the end or worrying about tipping. Scenic went above and beyond our expectations. We flew in a day early and Scenic arranged for pickup and took us to our hotel in Budapest. We also added the 3 days in Prague to the end of our trip and it was well worth it. Scenic put us up in Marriotts in Budapest and Prague and they were very nice and near city center, easy walking distance to downtown squares. The staff was extraordinary, paid attention to every detail, even anticipating our needs each day as we visited the lounge. The rooms were nice size and the bathrooms even better with showers much larger than the average cruise ship. The window on the balcony that lowers when you want fresh air was nice to have too. The dining room had wonderful meals each evening and service was exceptional. The ship was only on it's 3rd voyage, you could still smell the new carpet. The excursions were all well thought out and planned and they took into consideration all needs. The private concert at Lichtenstein palace was quite the experience and wonderful! The motorized bicycles were fantastic to be able to ride from one town to another and meet the boat in another location. Wonderful experience to ride through small river towns on the Danube. As is typical with cruises though, you don't have enough time to really see the town. If you take one of the guided tours, there isn't enough free time after to go explore on your own. For the price, level of service and attention to detail that they provide, you will be happy with your selection and be able to enjoy every minute of your vacation. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to experience cruising first hand for the first time. We really enjoyed the whole trip. The ship's crew, including the restaurant and bar staff, were very keen to please (without being overbearing) and really added many positive aspects to the cruising experience. The senior staff on the ship were very accommodating and helpful with advice on shore excursions. We chose the staterooms on the lowest deck, and were pleasantly surprised to not hear much in the way of engine noise. The stateroom was plenty big enough, and well appointed, with a comfortable bed and plenty of storage room. However, we might consider moving up a floor next time (and there WILL be a next time!) just because the view out the window is a little limited. The ship itself was beautiful; very modern, and again well appointed. Lots of interesting books in the library, plenty of room to stretch out on the deck, and, even though it is a relatively small ship, there was plenty of opportunity for privacy or socializing, depending on which you might prefer on any given day. The daily briefings and presentations were a "can't miss" attraction. Not only did Mircea keep us entertained and informed, but the company brought in local craftspeople or academics to show us things like glassblowing or German history, sociology and geography. Every shore excursion was great, entertaining and educational, and although we seemed to cover a lot of ground, we didn't feel rushed at all. I would have preferred a little more time in Vienna, Nuremberg and Cologne, but it gave me some ideas for future trips. Highlights included Budapest, downtown Vienna, Passau, Wertheim, Cologne, Nuremberg and Amsterdam, although I would hasten to add there was no place on the entire trip that we did not enjoy. However, by the time we left Wertheim, I think we were a little tired of Austro-Hungarian Empire stuff - not the history, so much, but just shocked at the level of corruption and inbreeding that occurred in the Hapsburg family. Special mention must be made of a tremendous guide that we had in Wertheim (Rudi), who was able to provide us with a first-hand experience of what it was like to be part of a family deeply connected with the SS, but not to understand until age 14 just how brutal the Nazi regime really was. He really brought the experience of our Wertheim tour to life for us. Service in the bar and restaurants was top notch and the quality of the meals was outstanding. The staff were very flexible if there were any special requests for dietary restrictions. We were happy to hook up with a really wonderful group of very experienced cruisers, who walked us through expectations and helped us a lot. These fine folks will remain lifelong friends, because we had a great deal in common. Would I go again? Absolutely! We will keep our bags packed, so we can leave at short notice! Thanks, Viking! We choose scenic because it was all inclusive, ie. tips, tours, alcoholic beverages. The food, service, staterooms and overall attentiveness was unparalleled. We had a balcony suite and it was perfect. Loved the glass windows that moved up and down. Variety of food was first class. Never boring. Absolutely anything you wanted at any time. I've never had a more pleasant and attentive staff wherever I've traveled. Only slightly negative aspect was that I would have preferred more 'cruise time' instead of some of the tours. All were good and interesting but some took too much time. Of course we had the option of just staying on the boat. All senior staff on boat were very accommodating and open with their time. Variety of menu choices was outstanding. Being invited to the two exclusive restaurants on board was a treat. Cleanliness of facilities and friendliness of staff was outstanding. I would definitely use Scenic again. Read Less

I selected the Viking Grand European River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. I was attracted to this cruise because everything was included in the price and the route takes you through most of the big name cities and attractions of Europe. After experiencing the cruise I could not be more pleased. The service that the crew and staff of the Viking Baldur provided was outstanding. The level of service we received on the cruise is totally unheard of in the US. The crew and staff went out of their way to make the voyage the most enjoyable trip of our lives (thus far!). For example, we arranged our own air travel since we wanted to spend time in Warsaw before flying on to Budapest to start the cruise. When we arrived in Budapest, I asked the Viking reception team at the airport if we could pay for a ride the transfer bus to the boat since we had not arranged for the transfer in advance because of our uncertain arrival time. The assistant for Viking said that we could take the Viking transfer bus, but that it would be less expensive for us to just take at taxi at that point. I do not speak Hungarian, and the Viking representative took us to a taxi and provided detailed instructions to the driver on where the boat was parked, which she would not have had to do since we did not use the airport transfer service. This is just one of many examples we experienced over the next 15 days on the cruise of the way the Viking representatives go out of their way to make your voyage the most enjoyable experience possible. Regarding the cruise categorization; I would call it a Luxury Cruise. It was not specifically a seniors cruise, although there were no children on the boat (much to my relief). Most people were north American, although there may have been a few Aussies there also, and virtually everyone spoke English, as did all the crew and staff. The food and wine were gourmet quality and there were choices of several different items at each meal. If you didn't like to eat in the more formal "sit down" fashion at the main dinning room, you could eat more casually on the terrace. There were no formal seating assignments in either dinning area and you could sit wherever you wanted and with whomever you wished. Dress on board was casual; no fancy clothes required. Read Less

When I retired from teaching after 40 years of service, I wanted to celebrate my new life with a European river cruise. We chose the Grand European Tour for 2 reasons. The first reason was that it was highly recommended by friends and family and the second reason was that a close friend had already booked on this particular cruise. As my husband is an amputee, it seemed like a good idea to travel with someone we knew, just in case there were difficulties. However, we needn't have worried about that, as from the moment we arrived in Budapest until the time we departed the cruise in Amsterdam, we received amazing support and guidance from the whole Viking crew. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly because all the crew was involved. The food and wine were delicious and plentiful, prepared and served by attentive and friendly crew members. The focus on food and wine specialties of the regions we were visiting increased our enjoyment and added to our cultural knowledge and understanding of those areas; but there was also a wide variety of alternatives to satisfy everyone's food tastes and requirements. I can't live without fruit and salad and they were available with every meal! The ship's facilities, such as the walking track (which I personally loved - fresh air, exercise and beautiful scenery), the sun lounge and the indoor bar and lounge, provided ample opportunity for travelers to relax alone or to meet up with others in a comfortable central location. The entertainment presentations and daily briefing by the Tour Director in these areas were fun and informative and the advice regarding tours suitable for my husband was always appropriate. We chose a cabin with a veranda because we thought that if my husband was unable to join in some of the excursions, he could still be outside enjoying the passing sights. We loved the small, compact bathroom (my husband went so far as to declare it was the best bathroom he had ever used), because the heated floor dried out any water quickly, the folding shower chair provided by Viking fitted perfectly into the shower recess, and the solid bench tops gave him stability when moving around. The most important experience I would like to share though, is not about the wonderful tours and highly competent tour guides we had, nor the ready access to a wheel chair for any tours requiring a lot of walking, but about the professionalism and care we received when my husband had the misfortune to have problems with his back during the cruise. Simply bending over to tie his shoes one morning, resulted in him twisting his pelvis, which brought on painful muscle spasms. One of the waiters helped me to bring food and fluids to the cabin for my husband as any movement caused him extreme pain. He made it clear he was happy to do anything to help me. The hotel manager and concierge organised a doctor's appointment for that afternoon, and a taxi to take us to the doctor. The doctor recommended and gave a cortisone injection and anti-inflammatory tablets as the best course of action, given we were leaving the town that afternoon and would not be in a big city for the next two days. My husband immediately felt some relief from the injection, and the pain and stiffness eased over the next few days. We could not have anticipated this problem, but the Viking crew treated us with the care and concern as if we were members of their own family. They continued to watch over us and check that we were doing OK. We will be forever grateful for their gentle and considerate support. This cruise was a once-in-a life-time occasion for us, but we would go again in a heart beat if we were able. Read Less

One staff member even escorted us to a church we wanted to attend, She happened to be going to the same church.. Great cruise made even better by the staff. Our cabin attendants greatly appreciated. Our rooms were also made up and extra towels were always available. We asked them to save the water bottle corks. They make great wine bottle corks which we still use at home. Upon exit for tours we greatly appreciate being handed a umbrella and an extra bottle of water. They came into good use. My wife needed a pharmacy and the staff found us one at the next port of call. The social director made many of the days enjoyable and full of laughter. Thanks to all form the Captain on down. Read Less

This was a great overall cruise. It provided a variety of European cities and waterways all in a single trip. I had never been to Budapest, nurenburg, Augustberg, Cologne, Amsterdam and many of the otehr destinations. I truly enjoyed the staff and boat. Boat is clean and new and staff is very pleasant and willing to help. I had taken another Viking trip to South France - Nice to Lyon with family and enjoyed it as well. They hae taken an number and it was my first. Loved Nice, Chateau Nuf du Pape, Lyon and all of the Roman ruins along the way. Favorable weather and great service on that one too. Suprisingly I met a number of people from my home town in Southern California and a number more who were plesant and good company. Bring a single, it sometimes was awkward which is the only thing that I have that did not go as well as I had hoped. On the other hand, I was not open to meeting any new women, other than as casual dinner companionship dut to recently meeting a woman that I was quite smitten with. We are now an item so you can expect a twosome next time. Is this a useful review? Date of trip is from memory, as I do not have the exact dates with me. Read Less

The route was our primary concern. We had heard a rumor that Emerald was a well run enterprise. Price was important. Would a new boy on the river be likely to be trying harder? So it turned out. Everything on this river cruise was of top quality. The staff worked hard day and night keeping it clean All those panoramic picture windows. some may find the overall decor of the boat is streamlined in the modern sense and even stark. Those who will miss French provincial decorating and other such "frou-frou" might be better looking to another boat. All the staff were of top quality and very well trained. Without exception they were warm and friendly. Much of this because sympathetic and through training by their excellent section managers. The menu chosen for the mix of nationalities aboard on that particular cruise. Local specialties of the country through which we were passing were available in abundance as well as min line food. The staff who did the cooking were of a Swiss based outsourced company and exceptional. The superb dining room staff supported them exceedingly well. An exceptional "Cruise Director" was not only helpful when asked but all the time. In common with all the staff he went out of his way to discover people's needs and preferences. Shore excursion groups were much smaller that those of other boats on the river and all had exceptionally well prepared guides. No doubt at all we would use Emerald again. The staff were very attentive to the needs of the aged, deaf and of limited mobility . But bear in mind no river boat can have the space or facilities of an ocean cruise ship. The disabled especially might like to look closely at both the boat's facilities and help available before signing on. River are often narrow and the boats often have to be moored parallel in pairs. So the only way to get to the boat away from the bank is to climb the steep steps on the outside of the boat(s) nearer to the bank, over its top and down steep stairs again. Not easy with bad joints or other medical problems. Read Less

Having enjoyed an excellent river cruise with Viking last year, we decided to try an Emerald Waterways cruise to compare the quality against the more expensive Viking cruises. We booked the 8 day trip from Budapest to Bucharest on board the Emerald Sky. From the outset the service we received was just as good as that offered by Viking. The booking process was very easy and the staff very friendly and helpful. By using Emerald we were able to afford an Owners Suite for the price that we paid for a Veranda State Room with Viking. Consequently we had a much superior room on Emerald Sky. Also by making an early booking we benefited from a free premium drinks package. Other than some interior design differences the ship was every bit as good and comfortable as the Viking Estla on which we travelled last year. The big bonus for us was that with Emerald Waterways, all tips are included in the price whereas with Viking they were not and this represented an overall saving of €300 - €400 and tipping did not become the main talking point amongst passengers as the cruise neared its finale' as was the case on our Viking Cruise. Without exception the staff on board were excellent throughout the cruise. Nothing was too much bother at any time. The land excursions were very enjoyable and overall this was an excellent river cruise. The food was excellent and the restaurant staff very attentive. We enjoyed the cruise so much that as soon as we arrived home we booked with Emerald to cruise from Amsterdam to Basel next year. The main area for improvement on Emerald Sky is the seating arrangements in the restaurant. This is mainly due to the way in which the tables are set out. There are far too many rectangular 6 'seater' tables which made it difficult for everyone at the table to talk to each other. These need to be replaced with round tables which make it much easier to talk to everyone at your table. There are also a number of tables for two situated next to the windows and this tended to encourage some passengers to panic, miss the daily pre-dinner Port Talk from the Cruise Director, to enable them to be first into the restaurant to ensure that they could sit at their favourite table. This was the big difference between Viking and Emerald. Viking actively encourage all passengers to sit at different tables each day to enable all passengers to get to know each other. Sadly this did not happen on Emerald Sky and cliques formed (which did not happen on Viking) and there were far too many on board reserving seats for friends (towels on sunbeds scenario) that quite often made it difficult for others who wanted to attend the Port Talk to find seating. This is the only major gripe we have from an otherwise excellent holiday. Read Less

We did a pre-cruise visit to Prague. The city tour provided by Viking was informational and gave us a nice history of the city. Worth the visit. We boarded the boat at Budapest ( ship name Skadi) and it went smoothly. The cabin suited our needs and the bathroom was a good size. Our room attendant's service was superior and very friendly. The dining experience provided us with a wonderful variety of excellent food and wonderful service. We liked the idea complementary wine or beer with lunch and dinner. Each port and shore excursion gave us a sample of the city's history and famous castles or cathedrals. Viking also offered optional tours, we took advantage of 3 different tours. The tours were very well planned and transportation was on clean, air conditioned buses. Cruising along the rivers was relaxing and the sites on the shore were breathtaking. Vineyards and castles dotted the shoreline. Embarkation and disembarkation went very quickly, with all needed information provided. We also appreciated the provided transfers to and from the airports, this helped to make sure we had a very enjoyable trip. Read Less

A friend suggested the cruise as a reunion for our professional group. We had a wonderful time together on a new, modern, efficient ship. Emerald accommodated our large group. The international staff were exceptional; professional, polished, expert, entertaining, caring, and very personable. The staff got to know our names and we got to know theirs; very comforting and friendly. The staff even gave us a talent show one night; they never stopped working for us. The educational, recreational, and social events were surprisingly good (I'm new to scheduled group activities) and relaxing. It was fun to travel through locks, nature, small towns, large cities, and vineyards. Emerald worked with expert tour guides, bus drivers, bike guides, canal companies, and auxiliary tour options. The captain of the Emerald Dawn was a veteran of the European rivers and was respected by others. Emerald thought of everything-very classy. I highly recommend this cruise line. Read Less

This was our first experience as river cruisers and we would rate it 10 out of 10. We travelled with two other couples, all of us of varying ages. The included excursions are suitable for almost all levels of fitness and mobility. We were very impressed with the tour buses and operators, extremely clean and knowledgeable guides. The city guides in all cases were exemplary. We initially thought the cabin was small but it was very nicely appointed. We did find we spent very little time in the cabin as there is so much public space on board with lots of seating for groups large and small (2). The food was beyond excellent with a variety of meals offered in two different venues. The dining room was always our choice for dinner and the staff was top notch. Lunch was at times in the dining room and otherwise in the lounge upstairs, buffet style. We are definitely going on a river cruise with Viking in the future, hoping for China Sept 2017. Our best advice is GO, it is a great way to travel and Viking took care of everything including air transport and pick up and delivery to and from airports. Read Less

We chose this cruise as a 70th birthday celebration for me. It is very hard to find fault with anything for the week we were on board. The cabin wasn't huge but perfectly adequate and spotlessly clean with hidden storage spaces for the cases and toiletries. The food would be hard to dislike as there was plenty of choice. Shore excursions were included and very well organised . The service was attentive and staff always helpful. The entertainment took in local dancers and singers; on other evenings there were quizzes and the staff put on a show. There was a choice for breakfast and lunch of two different areas; the bar area for lighter breakfast and lunches as well as the main restaurant which carried the larger selection of dishes. The ship itself was spotlessly clean. When we arrived at the different ports the coaches for the excursions were always there waiting for us. There was a small swimming pool at the back of the ship and a very limited Fitness room, but at least it was there for anyone that wanted to use it. We would certainly travel with Emerald Waterways again. Read Less

We went on Emerald's 1st cruise down the Danube last year from Budapest to the Black Sea. We enjoyed it all so much that as soon as we got home we booked to do the journey up the Danube and down the Rhine to Amsterdam. It was excellent in all respects. From arrival at Budapest to departing at Amsterdam Schiphol, everything went like clockwork. The staff are amazing - all of them. They are efficient, calm, friendly, helpful - they made both cruises wonderful experiences and we do hope that there will soon be an Emerald cruise including Russia and the Baltics. The meals were all we could have wished for and the restaurant is informal but slick, service is efficient and local specialties are offered at each stage. Shore tours are well organised, local tour guides were in most cases excellent and opportunites were offered for all levels of activity and involvement. The pool is a huge bonus for us, we do not know of another river cruise line offering pool facilities. Our cabin on the top deck was spacious, had a huge picture window with indoor balcony, was well serviced daily and was very comfortable. Entertainment was available including local artistes, folk groups etc and these were all of high standard. We particularly enjoyed the opportunity to meet a local family in a small group (12) and discuss traditions, education, jobs and prices of daily needs with them. We became more travellers than tourists. Read Less

The Viking crew worked hard to make sure everything was great for us. I only had one complaint about the tour guide during our excursion to Schonbrun Palace. She went so far ahead of us, talking about things in one room, when we were in another room because of the crowd! To make it worse, the chef announced a spontaneous trip to the market that guests could go on but since we had booked the excursion, we didn't go. If we had known that was an option, we would have gone with the chef. The cabin was great and room service excellent. We enjoyed the nightly activities. I especially liked the glass blower demonstration. Overall all our excursions were great. I felt I was on a history tour! Yes, we are definitely going on another cruise! Read Less

From the time of embarkation till disembarkation we were treated like royalty. The crew were just the best and nothing was a bother to them they made the experience one of the best of our lives. Cabins were most comfortable, food was 5 Starr. Excursions were all very well planned and again we were looked after whilst off the ship. On board entertainment was excellent as was the on shore entertainment. The hotels that we were booked into were both excellent for before and after the cruise. The memories I have of this journey will be lasting for a lifetime. The ship was beautiful, and the staff were top-notch. Every effort was made to give us a wonderful experience, and these efforts were successful. My only suggestion to Viking is to in some way, attempt to make the atmosphere more inclusive. We are a same-sex, married couple; and we had to endure no end of questions from our fellow passengers regarding the nature of our relationship. Upon debarkation, the purser presented me with my bill only (despite my having requested the entire bill for the stateroom), requiring me to wait in line a second time to pay the charges that were in my husband's name. When one looks at a Viking ad, one sees obviously well-off, attractive, white, opposite-sex couples. This is in contrast to Princess Cruises (our last major trip), which makes an obvious effort to show a variety of races, ethnicities, and life-styles in their trip photos and ads. I loved Viking, but felt more at ease on Princess. Read Less

Entertainment, activities and Port and Shore excursions were well thought out and culturally informative and enriching. On board Service was 5 star all the way as promised. It was a cruise for more mature and active passengers which was what we were looking for. We will certainly be doing another Scenic Holiday. Some of the highlights included a Classical evening at the Palace of Liechtenstein and the guided tour of Bratislava was amazing and the side cruise to the Weltenburg Abbey which houses the Oldest Brewery in the World. Top notch. Not the cheapest but the best. Food was not only excellent and we know that is so subjective. But the staterooms are over the top and with High end liquors & spirits. The Tours were excellent and we saw all we wanted to see. There are cheaper River cruises out there but the quality was made this so special. We did dock next to another river cruise and walked thru it and was so glad we did Uniworld. You can't go wrong here. We did get a balcony but if you think you are getting more space forget it as the balcony takes up most of the stateroom. if you look at pictures of river cruises you won't see balconies sticking out on the side. Makes sense if you think about it. We went through 76 locks and there was no room for a balcony to stick futon the side. The fitness room was very small as I am sure it is on all river cruises. It's great that there were only 100 people and you meet everyone. The excursions were nice. Sometimes all the small cities start to run together. One tour we chose was the Heidelberg Castle. Did not really care for that tour. I would recommend the City tour instead. Did not care for the post tour in Amsterdam provided by Uniworld. Would recommend to stay a few days on your own and not at the Uniworld hotel. No air conditioning. Food not good. Would definitely sail with Uniworld again. Was one of our best vacations. Read Less

We chose the riverboat cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg ("Romantic Danube") because it enabled us to visit several cities we had not seen before, and because the land tours offered seemed more educational, historical and interesting to us than some of the other Viking land tours. The Viking staff were terrific, and the ship is perfect for riverboat cruises. The ship is modern, clean and efficient. We opted for a cabin with a veranda, and are really glad we did. We enjoyed sitting out on the veranda, and the more spacious feeling the veranda gives the room. We loved the fact that the cruise is almost "all inclusive". We did not have to pay extra for the city tours in each town we visited, nor did we have to pay extra for wine or beer taken with meals. We signed up for optional additional tours most days, and all but one were excellent. Viking does an excellent job. Read Less

We arrived 2 days early in Budapest and greatly enjoyed the city, our hotel, and the Szchecheny baths. Budapest is a clean, safe city and easy to get around using public transportation. Our ship was clean, with friendly, well-trained staff, great food, and good excursions. The cabin was comfortable, if a little chilly (we were at water level). My husband's birthday was recognized and celebrated at dinner with a cake. Tour groups were well organized, with dedicated buses and radio headsets for each small group/guide. The guides were very knowledgeable. Some were more interesting than others, telling stories about everyday life in their city/country and sharing historical tidbits. My husband got a little weary of churches and castles, so a little more variety would have been welcomed. We would have enjoyed spending more time in Vienna - such a lovely city! Basically, you get what you pay for, and we paid well. Read Less

Never been to Europe. Wanted to see central Europe and the Danube. It was incredible. Viking did everything. It was "cradle to grave". Our air was handled by Viking. We flew directly to Europe so we only had one change to get to Budapest. Viking picked us up and took us to the boat. Our luggage was in the room when we opened the door. The service was excellent, the food was terrific, and the port excursions were entertaining and educational. I think the attention to detail in all aspects of the cruise is what made me feel as though the crew really cared about our comfort and fun. The first lock we encountered was about midnight and we had to wait for about an hour to enter. The cruise director stayed with the people waiting on deck to watch the lock entrance. By the time the boat entered the lock it was after 1 am. Now this guy probably had to be up at 6 am but as long as their were passengers on deck, he stayed there explaining what was happening. The whole situation impressed me and set a good tone for the balance of the trip. Hopefully we go on another cruise and it will definitely be Viking. Read Less

The cruise was Viking's Grand European Cruise. It started in Budapest and ended in Amsterdam. We went all through Germany. We spend a few days before and after the cruise in those port cities on our own. The ship was commission within the year. We stayed in a cabin with a French Baloney, which was lovely; my husband and I travelled by ourselves Food was outstanding. Many nights the food was theme based. Beer and wine were served without any extra charge for lunch and dinner. The wifi connection left a little to be desired. The staff and crew were very personable, helpful, and attentive. I would recommend this cruise highly. We enjoyed the ports of call. We sailed the Rhine, Rhone, and Main Rivers. Unfortunately the May weather was unseasonably cool and rainy. There is nothing that can be done about that. Bring a light weight rain coat just in case. Read Less
