We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. We had never been to Iceland and we thought this would give us an idea of what to see there. The embarkation process was horrible. Long lines and only two windows open when we arrived. We had to drag our luggage with us through the whole line. We were assigned the wrong dining time. It took us three days and a lot of haggling to get it changed. The head maitre d “ Anton” was not helpful or caring. Every employee on the ship seemed as though they had never cruised before. No one knew what they were doing and could not make a decision by themselves. We were offered a “welcome” cocktail party one evening. The waiters were very efficient bringing out dozens of trays of cocktails for the guests. However, not one officer from the ship showed up to “welcome” us on board. When we bought our cruise we were offered an incentive of 12 drink coupons per person. When we arrived on the ship there were no coupons. We asked at reception and were told that the offer had expired so we would not get the coupons. I sent an email to my travel agent. The next day we received a message in our cabin to come to reception. Our coupons were waiting for us. Usually on other cruise lines I have a case of water sent to our cabin. MSC did not offer only water. You have to buy a drink package that includes water. Our interior cabin was adequate. It did have two closets which was nice. No one had tissues in their cabin. We were told it was an environmental reason but if we really wanted them we could call the front desk to request them which we did. If it was environmental there were a lot of other things they do they could change. The food in every venue was horrible. The buffet was so crowded at all times. The food was comparable to a low end restaurant. The dining room was the same with food that could have been prepackaged frozen items. Mushy shrimp cocktails, fishy fish and white rice with everything. Our server Widiana was excellent and the head waiters Mircea Bercaru and Jamal also went out of their way to make our dining the best they could with what they had to work with. We bought a specialty dining package they offered online. When we got on the ship we had so many conflicts with shows we wanted to cancel it. We were told anything we bought online was not eligible to be cancelled. We juggled our schedules in order to fit it in. We were very disappointed in all the specialty restaurants. All the food was no better than the dining rooms. Also, you expect a more upscale dining room. This was not the case. The rooms were just an area stuck in the side of the ship painted a different color. The shows were typical MSC. There was a lot of opera and classical music. The production shows were mediocre. The premise for some of the shows was something you would make for grade school. One of our seatings was cancelled in the middle of the show because the curtain got stuck and the could not open it. However, the dancers were exceptional. They all deserve a better place to work. The Cirque de Soleil show “Sonor” was cancelled for the whole cruise. We did not find out until we arrived for the show after having skipped our dinner because of the time conflict. The other Cirque show “ Viaggio” started on time only to stop three times due to “ technical difficulties “. All the shows such as the ventriloquist had to be translated into five or six different languages which was very annoying. The showroom was beautiful but the stairs had lighting that was very bright and blinding. We saw three people fall at different times. The grand staircase in the atrium was the same but accented with crystals which was supposed to be beautiful but was only blinding. Our room steward Dixon did an excellent job. Most ship employees were good. A lot were unfriendly. The captain interrupted our day every day an noon to tell us the weather and the ships position. Then his announcement had to be translated into six languages again. They did not make any other announcements on the PA system leading to the passengers not having any knowledge about what was going on. The ports were very nice. We only took one excursion with the ship. It ran smoothly. We were told by other passengers that the excursions in Iceland left so late they were touring in the dark and visited the stops in the dark. They went to see the geysers in the dark. The restrooms on the ship were all outfitted with new fixtures that were supposed to be automatic but never worked. You could never get any soap and the water was always running all over the floor. Every charge on the ship was in Euros. Even if you registered your credit card online before you left as you do with every other cruise lines, you had to go to a kiosk on the ship to authorize a minimum $250 (275 euros) before you could buy anything on the ship. One thing we learned that was very upsetting was that even though all their charges were in Euros they pay their employees in American dollars. They lose a lot in the exchange rate. The Meraviglia was the largest cruise ship to ever dock in New York. We were to spend two nights on the ship in New York. We were advised to leave the ship on our full day there and not return for at least 6 hours. This was because customs would be coming on the ship and they were not sure when they would finish. We did this only to return to the ship full of outside people touring the ship. We and many other people on the ship that we spoke with have decided this is the last chance for MSC. We will never travel on one of their ships again. Read Less

Theis ship is horrible, the service is so bad there is no excuse for it. It takes ages for a waiter to come to you for drinks in the main buffet even tho you have a bell for colling them, one time the waiter came to the table canceled the call and just walked away without takeing our order, when we asked him why he did that he came with such a dumb excuse, and thats is all the staff have for you is excuses. When you want to go to shore there are harbors with only steps as gang walks so disabled people cant disimbark, on the ports that disabled people can disimbark you will go thru hell when you imbark, first of all they will make sure that you know that they doing the disable people a big favor if they let 1 person to acompany the disable thru security, we had 1 person with an oxigen mask on her and security made her stand in line for 10 mins for security, they made me choose betwin my disabled father and my child ( who didnt speak english) so i had no choice but to wait for my child, so my father had to wait for me and my child and they put him near a trashcan so god forbid he will interfere the other guests, when we whent to complain about it, the costomer service made me feel like I was the one to blame, he didnt wrote my complain right and ofcourse the complaint was nulled with the excuse that you cant expect them to let 3 people cut the securety line (and I remind you 1 person is disabled and one is a child) and leting the other guest wait. The dishes in the buffet was dirty we got glasses with lipstick marks on them, plates with pasta still on it. On other ships at the evenibg of your first imbarkation the person in charge of cleaning your room comes and introduce him/her self to you and tells you that every thing you needs room wise to come to him/her, on this ship we saw him only on the last night of the cruise. The one bright light on the ship is the food, it was tasty and good and you had a large choice of dishes to choose from in the buffet, and every day was diffrent dishes, too bad you couldn't had plates to put those delicious dishes. We took an excurtion in kiel and asked the woman who booked us the excurtion if it takes us to see the city itself including the city center because they had 1 tour only for the harbor and the tour we took, at the end both of the excurtions was only for the harbor and we didnt saw the city at all. Pass these ship there are other ship lines that are much better with the same prices as this one. Read Less

This cruise was chosen for its itinerary. The ship is a fancy barge where you pay extra for anything you may need. We were expected to pay for a glass of tap water in the formal restaurant. They do not provided any facial tissues in the balcony stateroom. They allow open smoking in several areas inside the ship which permeayes the showroom and other bars! There are over 21 points for improvement with this cruise company. The entertainment us cheap, appears unrehearsed and karaoke like most nights. Embarkmemt required showing proof you were a real person I've 3 times and queuING each time. If you are a first timer cruiser this cruise may be good for you as you would not know how low a standard MSC is. Of course you may like to pay to have open dining but other crise companies have all the above plus more included in their offer Read Less

Liked the look of the cruise itinerary, and departing from Newcastle is more convenient and an easier port to get to than other ports. Booked an executive suite which are supposedly the best cabins on board and are on deck 10. Bad decision. Must say the cabin is spacious and well furnished BUT the inescapable element is constant noise from the deck above. We noticed it initially during the first day, noise of furniture being moved and scraped along the deck. The first night we were woke at 5am, then at 1.30am second night. It appears the deck was being cleaned which needed furniture to be moved. Formally complained in writing, no one responded and had a third night of disturbed sleep. Altogether had to complain 3 times to the “hotel manager”, not impressed at all with the response. The cruise was spoiled by the noise as it is a constant irritant when in the cabin, even during the day. A number of other issues occurred such as on embarkation we were told there was an IT problem which meant long queues while dropping off luggage in the car park and within the terminal building. Luggage was not unloaded on time from the ship after disembarkation, again huge queues in the car park whilst fork lift trucks were coming and going delivering suitcases. The food generally in the restaurants is adequate, not of a high quality. Got the feeling that some of the crew were very inexperienced, and required further training. Overall, it is downmarket, it was a bad experience and will not be going anywhere near a Marella ship again. Read Less

Embarked in Warnemunde, embarkation was fine. Went to the rooms, was room 10241,aft balcony. Large balcony however the engines shook so much, I couldn’t sleep half of the 10 nights. Then, the food. Half of it was inedible, the other half was disgusting. I ate salad and salad the whole cruise. There was lack of diversity in food. No prepared sandwich, no omelet station, the burgers were stale, all the food was so gross, I was popping tums and zantac the whole time. The staff, came out with a roast beef that they couldn’t even cut into with a chef knife. Everyone on the ship was complaining on how hard it was, and then i found the same meat cut up in the dining room. NO one speaks English, no one helps, the shows are laughable and the rooms are tiny. We booked a excursion for handicap and they showed up 1 hour late. One of the ports they didn't put a ramp for wheelchair and it was impossible for handicaps. I would never go on this cruise line again. I cruised on here 8 years ago on a Caribbean itinerary and it was great. I don’t know what happened but it took a turn to the worse. Heed the warnings in this review, this cruise is for EURO traveler, unless you are VERY adventurous traveler and don’t care about customer focus. I have been on over 50 cruises this one ranks number #50 on worse. No sympathy or compassion towards their customer Read Less

Hot water in urns not hot so Luke warm tea.Food dried up and not hot just warm .Food in restaurant menu very limited and not to British taste mostly meat not enough veg .Not enough lifts and we were constantly squashed .Cabin had no sofa so no where to sit only on bed which was rock hard and uncomfortable ,holes in curtain and sheets carpet had catches in .No extras had to pay for everything . This was a special cruise for us as it was our first cruise and we were looking forward to sailing at night so that we could spend each day exploring a new country. In fact we only stopped at 2 of the 5 ports. We had no information prior to joining in Copenhagen that we would be there for 2 days (we would have arranged to arrive on the ship later and conduct a tour of Copenhagen), although those joining in Germany had been told to embark at Copenhagen. We missed Germany, Sweden and Finland and spent an extra day in Estonia. What a waste of time. The ferries were running from Tallinn to Helsinki, but the modern, high tech, stabilised Norwegian Breakaway could not sail the short distance. At a Q&A session with the Captain and Hotel Manager over 500 people voiced how angry they were that NCL had ruined the cruise offered nothing to compensate i.e. no free movies or internet or dining options. The entertainment stagnated and certainly the Flyboys had come prepared to offer a different show from the one already seen by everyone, but were never asked to do so. The inside cabin was clean, roomy and well designed. The food was good but the buffet was absolutely packed and like a cattle market. The junior staff were generally helpful, but the more senior they were, the more evasive they became. We were told by the Captain that the decision not to visit the other ports was made by NCL Head office in Miami and went to the President of NCL for the final decision. Did they apologise, offer any sort of compensation or do anything to try and compensate for all the disappointment. Nothing but excuses and poor entertainment at sea. Read Less

We chose this cruise as our friends wanted to visit Germany. Well we got there and as it was a Sunday, no shops were opened. We were not told about this before getting off the ship and getting into a bus. It was infuriating. We were due to go to Finland, which I was so waiting to see and the captain decided that due to some "rough" weather he sailed straight through. We have since found out that smaller cruise ships docked. The food was very average. Even if you dined in one of the speciality rooms the menus were the same. Young kids helping themselves to the soft serve ice-cream and making a mess. So many children running riot. Have no idea where their parents were. People talking so loud and yelling to each other across the room. The cost of buying things onboard were ridcules. Maybe bring down your prices. We have done five cruises before getting on this ship and it was very disappointing. We will never cruise with any Norwegian lines again and we will certainly be letting our friends know. Read Less

Looked to learn Baltic, North European and Scandinavia culture and cuisine. We are returning customers who are deeply and sadly disappointed in NCL's new attitude. This was the worst and we would never cruise with them again. The ship was overcrowded with tired and helpless personnel. Demographics: dominated by Chinese, Indian and South-East Asia guests as well as football fans. Super enthusiastic pushy and loud. English was still an option, hardly understandable, not a single announcement made by a ENS. Smoking was allowed everywhere! Food: A complimentary buffet "Garden Café" (15 deck): most of the time looked like the JFK airport in the middle of the ice storm. At the BALTIC cruise we were kindly treated with Chinese, Indian and junk food US, as potato chips and hot dogs, barely warm. At the food stations some guest prefer to server themselves with bare hands, also sticking individual plastic bottles at juice and water stations. We were offered green pee soup every other day. Probably it was a green pee super sale. Pastries tasted all the same and differs only in colors. And if you are still hungry after that - you will not find place to sit down. Service in complimentary a-la-carte restaurants was better but you had to wait 30-40 min to get a table. The stereo in the lounge during lunch time was so loud so it was hard to talk to a waiter. On shore operations: Changes started as soon as we paid the cruise. The email informed us that instead of Stockholm, Breakaway would get docked in a small town 60 Km away with a free shuttle and 2 extra hours of time as a compensation. Later on, a free shuttle was upgraded to a "50 USD free". As we finished our check-in we got a note that in Rostock the docking pier changed for a further remote one and we must pay 15 USD to get to the town. Next day we got to Rostock just to learn that it was Sunday and everything was closed. The town was deserted. After sitting on the bench for 2 hours (shopping time) we return back on the ship. The weather in Tallinn was rainy. On the way back to the ship we socked to the bounces. Sant-Petersburg was nice though the passport control was slow and the on shore operations not well organized. Our next call in Helsinki (Finland) did not happened at all. First due to the storm, later low tide, in reality due to money saving tricks. We could log in to Helsinki port live cameras and watch several cruise liners, including Royal Caribbean Navigator of the See safely docked that morning. In Sweden we took an hour ride to Stockholm. It was a Midsummer Celebrations week-end and the city was closed and empty again.(NOBODY at NCL new about it) Some museums and small shops in the Old town got opened close to the noon. The aria was overwhelmed with tourists. The return ride to the ship was a mass. Last day we were cruising Norwegian fjords celebrating it with Indian cuisine (again !). Read Less

Norwegian Breakaway 9-day Baltic Cruise June 16 – June 25, 2018. Issues: Port of Rostock Ship docked in cargo port in Rostock Germany, not the tourist port. Shuttles (fee paid by guests) were needed to get to Rostock for a promised several hours of shopping. All businesses in Rostock were closed for Sunday. Very poor planning by NCL. Excursions were sold by NCl for Berlin trip (over 1-hour bus trip each way). Again, most businesses and attractions were closed because it was Sunday. Very poor planning by NCL. Port of Stockholm Ship docked in Nynashamn instead of Stockholm 1-hour bus shuttle (fee paid by guests) to Stockholm Reduced time in Stockholm Chaotic bus logistics for the return to the ship – exhausted seniors told to wait for 2 ½ more hours for the “correct” bus transport to return to ship, even though seating was available on the existing buses. Ship docked on Saturday following Midsummer Festival kickoff – most shops and stores in Stockholm were closed. This is an event known to occur at least 1 year in advance. Extremely poor planning by NCL. Port of Helsinki The captain decided to bypass this stop. The first reason given to the passengers was the Baltic was too stormy to allow docking in Helsinki. After the crew learned the passengers had checked the live feed from the Port Authority of Helsinki online and saw the Royal Caribbean ship Navigator (which had been docked in St Petersburg next to our ship and left approximately the same time the NCL Breakaway did) safely docked in Helsinki, the story from the captain changed to “abnormally low tide” in the port. Once again, tidal charts are available years in advance. The suspicion among the passengers was a business dispute between NCL and the Port of Helsinki. NCL has gone to the same business model as the airlines – charge for services and conveniences that were previously included in the base fare. I find this highly distressful. Charge a fare that covers all these items and don’t “nickel and dime” your customers. This added a layer of stress and aggravation to the cruise experience that was not needed. I will investigate this policy with the utmost scrutiny on any future cruise. This cruise was marketed as being sold on primarily North American customers. Among the 4,000 passengers barely 40% were North American. The majority were South Asian (Indian) and Chinese. The usual North American societal norms of behavior (no pushing, wait your turn, the concept of “indoor voice” vs “outdoor voice”, observe disease prevention protocols when dining) were completely foreign to these passengers. There was no venue on board to escape the constant noise and pushing and shoving of this demographic, other than to hide in our cabin or try to drink ourselves into a stupor. The food, usually a selling point of an expensive cruise, was bland at best. There was no effort to provide any good fish dishes that we had been looking forward to. The Director of Restaurants was Indian, and most of the dishes offered were either Indian, Chinese or fast food American style. Extremely disappointing. I would have no desire to book another cruise in the near future. I will never book another cruise with NCL – that door is closed forever. As this event required air travel to and from Europe, 2 weeks vacation and significant other expenses and efforts, my expectations were understandably high. I paid for an NCL experience and got Carnival service. That business model is not long term sustainable in my opinion. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we had heard from various people that MSC offered a cruise experience like no other. They were correct it was a cruise like no other and one we do not wish to repeat. MSC make a great fuss in the brochure about 'Matching the status of another cruise company and giving you the equivalent in their loyalty programme' Nothing could be further from the truth we are both Diamond Members from Royal Caribbean. We were supposed to receive their top level which was a 'Black Card' as well as 5% off the cruise price. Clearly they ran out of Black Cards and the 5% vaporised as neither 'benefit' materialised before embarkation. The so called 'Aurea Experience Balcony Cabin' was so cramped you couldn't swing a cat in it, the hit and miss interactive TV was small. All movies were pay per view at 7 euros each. There was no milk in the cabin only a creamer. The dear cabin steward informed us that only room service would provide the milk, he omitted to mention the most important bit of information, we were CHARGED for a jug of milk 1.27 euros! It gets worse. The menus in both the Sahara cafe and main dining rooms were identical, my wife ordered Eggs Benedict for breakfast in the dining room this was inedible. The muffin wasn't even toasted, the egg was rock hard, the ham just a piece of fat, the sauce had way too much vinegar in it and was too soupy. I had the 'bacon and fried eggs'. bacon was fatty and overcooked and the eggs not even set. This too was left. The waiters clearly didn't know anything about the food coming out of the kitchen. According to the menu the Head Chef was English, this gentleman would have been booted off the Masterchef competition at the first outing. As 80% of the passengers were German the menu gravitated towards their cuisine. In the Sahara cafe no help was afforded to my wife who needed to use a wheelchair the staff just stood and watched as we struggled to locate a suitable table. Clearing used plates from tables was apparently beyond their capability. We discovered that this Cruise company operate a sea going taxi service with passengers getting on at Le Havre and getting off. The same happened at Zeebrugge, Amsterdam,Hamburg and Southampton. We had carefully chosen excursions so that my wife in a wheelchair could be pushed by me on level ground. NO CHANCE! The first excursion in Le Havre was changed and no one had the courtesy to mention this as we collected the tickets, the 'new' excursion revolved around a 2.5 hour walk round Le Havre over uneven bumpy ground. We were forced to sit in a cafe for 2.5 hours near the coach pay 9.80 euros for two small coffees and wait for the return of mainly German passengers and a similar debacle occurred in Amsterdam when we informed by the tour guide that the canal cruise involved a 600 yard round trip walk, we declined and returned to ship. The so called Priority Disembarkation at Southampton was a joke!. The ship was an hour late arriving missed its berth slot and ended at another berth about a quarter of a mile away this meant that passengers were getting off as well as those going on excursions. Finally we got onto a courtesy coach for transferring to our car park. Would we use MSC Magnifica again? Not if this cruise company was the last one on Planet Earth. In all our years spent cruising since 1989 this was without doubt the worst cruise experience of all. We would say to anybody contemplating using this company particularly with mobility issues and who want to eat well, don't bother. Customer care is clearly off the agenda along with the service which is non existent Read Less

We took this cruise to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Advertised lots of restaurants and entertainment, however, mostly not available due to crowding and inadequate space in restaurants, theatre and other entertainment venues. Have to make reservations for restaurants or wait with beeper. Reservations only taken for 5:30 or 6:30, or wait. First night waited one hour with beeper. Told we had other options, we could go to buffet. Not enough seating at buffet either. Have to stand and watch for a table then one person guard it while the other goes for food. Awful! Our anniversary was on second night of cruise. We were placed at a small table betwen 2 noisy work stations with dirty dishes and trays even though we told them it was our anniversary. We asked to move halfway thru dinner and our food was carried across the room to another table, so embarrassing. Also, our travel agent had gifted red wine for my husband and white for me to celebrate our anniversary but it took 6 days (4 days after our anniversary) to get the white after multiple requests and even though we gave them a copy of our travel agent receipt on our anniversary. So sad. You also need reservations for most theatre entertainment, but we were never able to get reservations since we were told there were no more places. Only times we saw shows in theatre we stood in the back until we got tired and left. Most entertainment or games we were interested in attending were held in the Atrium. Unfortunately we could only participate once since there was never enough seating other times. The Atrium seats a couple of hundred people, not enough for a ship with 4000 passengers. We would have enjoyed the casino, however, we only went once as the smell of smoke was unbearable. We take cruises so that we don't have to worry about where we are going to eat or having to plan entertainment on a vacation. Sorry to say this was the worst cruise we have ever taken and it was not how we hoped to celebrate our anniversary. Read Less

Chose it because we had used Silversea before and were pleased. We were not told in advance that the ship would go into dry dock after this cruise. We were assured that the state room would be equal to our medallion suite on Silver Shadow. We were astounded to find the room no larger than a closet WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING. WE BEGGED FOR 3 days to have the AC fixed as we slept 3 nights in shifts having to have doors open to hallway and veranda. Finally a new thermostat was installed on the 4th day. On the 4th day the lock on veranda door was finally fixed. The room was totally dingy and dirty. Room staff was marginal at best. I had a facial at the spa which was probably the worst I have ever had. She spent a total of 15 minutes with me and I was handed a bill for $186 USD. We wanted to speak to someone on the ship regarding a future trip. There was no one available. We were told that person had to leave the ship because of a family illness later to find out there had been no one for at least 2 months. The ship never should have sailed in the condition it was in. We felt the voyage was a product of GREED! Many complaints from others on the ship with the same problems. Machines in fitness center were broken. Too bad as good memories of Silversea have vanished. We chose Norwegian Getaway for its Baltic itinerary in July because we wanted to bring our children and grandchildren (6 of us altogether) to a cool place for summer vacation, away from the sultry weather in Taiwan, visiting such historic and scenic cities like Copenhagen, Berlin, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Tallinn and Stockholm. We derived great pleasure from this itinerary. Furthermore, the ship is very new equipped with excellent facilities and provides tasty food with great varieties. (The free-style dining was especially convenient for us, not restricting us to one or two restaurants.) The entertainments such as the Soul quartet and the Latin dance were very enjoyable. My grandchildren had a lot of fun climbing the wood framework and playing basketball on top the ship. The crew were friendly and helpful, always wearing a smile on their faces. All in all, we had a great time onboard the ship and also during our shore excursions. Read Less

Over the past few years we have been cruising our way up the Norwegian coast with various cruise lines, the itinerary deciding which cruise to take. However, this year's preferred cruise was fully booked so the next option was Crown Princess, oh what a mistake we should have taken this year out. Embarkation at Southampton was chaotic with a total lack of interest from ship's staff on boarding the ship. There were very long queues for the Michaelangelo dining room with some guests allowed to book tables but others denied. The very strange menus were basically the same day in day out with only sauces or method of cooking varying. The Horizon buffet was a free for all with vegetables presented first before you found out what meat or fish (if at all) might be available. On a number of occasions the "food" presented was inedible. Very often the coffee was Grey in colour and the Tea was putrid. Sadly none of the Horizon staff (or management) were interested in resolving any concerns. The Port and Shore excursions were average with one excursion from Gravdal being cancelled apparently "due to lack of interest" 5 days before it was due to take place which was very strange as a number of other guests had been told that that particular excursion was overbooked! Overall, not impressed at all but what did surprise me was how many other guests, many of whom had obviously cruised with Princess for many years, expressed similar concerns to ourselves. Princess Cruises, never again. Read Less

We chose this trip based on ports selected by YMT. Ports were great---cruise---worst ever. Everything you get on Costa costs you---even water!! Had to buy water pkg for $37. Glass of water at bar costs. Food was horrible---attractive looking in dining room but almost same selections nightly. If you're a pasta lover you might survive. Almost same offerings daily in buffett. No lobster or prime rib meals without additional cost. Had to make special arrangements to have coffee served during dinner. (I guess that's not a Italian thing) You even have to pay for room service. Additional charge of $2.50. That's a first. Nothing is free. Entertainment is very amateur. One show had to leave because it was so dull. Not much to offer during day if onboard. Small casino and poker tables but that is normal for cruise ships. Didn't even offer ice cream. Food not available unless it was meal hours. We traveled with 2 other couples. Had a great time at ports being with friends but will never use Costa again. Restrooms seemed to be closed often. usually after dinner---not available! Really!! Can't this be addressed sooner. Read Less

Been on a couple of Fred Olsen cruises before on the Balmoral & was expecting the same kind of treatment ,sadly I couldn't have been more wrong !. the ship looked shabby & dated .The ship is not disabled friendly . there are only two sets of lifts which are small & you have to walk down very long corridors to get to cabins which are cramped and not well fitted. There were only two smoking areas on board which can only be accessed by climbing stairs ,when I asked they had failed to offer a smoking area with level access I was quite rudely told that this was the wish of the owners & basically told hard luck . the entertainment is abysmal !.the excursions are an overpriced rip-off and they do not provide provide free shuttles out of the ports they charge you five pounds per day . I have read bad reviews about COSTA, but the destinations looked very appealing so I took my chances. Well, I should have listened to those reviews because other than the great port of calls, reasonable price of the cruise and the very entertaining shows by their in house singers and dancers, everything else was bad. There were 14 of us in 7 cabins, and most of us have the same sentiments-never will we take COSTA again! Let me list some of the reasons : 1.Embarkation procedure disorganized, took us 3 hours from arrival at terminal to boarding. And we arrived early ( 11 a.m.). 2.Food low quality & lacked variety , even the specialty restaurant Lobster & Grill ( extra charge of E25 per cover) had bad food - lobster clearly frozen & meat sticking to the shell, Key Lime Pie looked & tasted like the store bought variety. Total waste of money ! 3. Buffet opens only at 7 p.m., frustrating for those who want a quick meal before watching first show at 7:15 p.m. And after 9:30 p.m., there's nowhere to find food . 4. Shore excursions cancelled if not enough people ( this happened twice that I know of with the English ones, could have happened more). 5. Delayed arrival in port, threw a wrench on our tours with private operators. 6.Front desk personnel not very knowledgeable, speak to different people and you get different answers. We wanted to buy their airport transfer upon disembarkation in Amsterdam but no more space- so I asked how much is taxi and the answer was 25E. We took 3 taxis and paid between 70-85 E per taxi, what a nice surprise! 7. Never seen such an unhappy lot of ship personnel, I suspect they are overworked and very underpaid. Confirmed when we spoke with a number of people working there. 8. Cabins were clean, but very warm despite adjusting in the thermostat. 9.Bought a shuttle bus ride with them, trip scheduled for 9:15 a.m. but bus was delayed so we left port at 10 a.m.. And last shuttle back to port was at 12:30 instead of 12:45 so we had very little time for sightseeing. Felt short changed. 10. Pet peeve: shower curtain one inch shorter than it should me resulting in water spraying around. Why can't spend a little money to replace those and save passenger aggravation as well as a lot of work on the cabin cleaners? I usually write a review only when I'm happy with my experience, but this one is to warn others. Unless you're a first time cruiser or you don't mind being stressed, don't take COSTA ! Read Less

The pick-up from the airport and boarding the ship, went very well. The facilities at the ship is very good, but that is probably all at the positive list. The service in the 2 receptions, were non existing. There were a huge lack of general knowledge and understanding of English language. If we asked about general information about the arriving ports, the answer was pretty much, take a taxi or book an excursion. As an overall opinion, this cruise is focusing on Germans and Italians. The service people in restaurants, bars etc. were helpful and service minded. The theater entertainment was about average, due to too little variation in performance. Dining area at our main restaurant was very nice, but the food was way below our expectations. The amount of food were not sufficient and poor quality. At our table for four persons, we had to let the food go back about 10 times. Steaks were impossible to cut and the same for the duck we got. At most meals the staff was trying to sell extras. MSC Galla nights means that the guest is dressing up, but the food at dinner is below average. But you can buy special food and drinks to extra prices that fits to your galla dress. Upsellin all over all the time. Dinner was a horrible experience. The port information were missing and no help in reception. Easy questions like how to get to city center, prices for taxi and busses, a city map was not possible to get. We had to buy extremely expensive wifi to google the information we needed. We had booked some English tours from home, but the guides did most in German language.Getting back from one excursions, we had to wait outside in heavy rain to get trough security check and back on the ship. Very poor organized, in this case in Marseilles. In overall a very disappointing cruise. The first and last time on MSC operated cruises. Read Less

Cabin and ship very poor, In the morning you do not even get a pot of tea and a freshly baked hard roll. In every port the worst berths, not a single time a transfer to the city for travelers who even go on a sightseeing tour. It is the by far bad ship with which I have ever taken. Complaints are accepted and one is friendly, but absolutely nothing is done. Every 10 meters on the corridors a bucket that catches water. In the gourmet restaurant sorbet was on the menu, I ordered it. With a grin I was given the cheapest ice with the comment on the table, sorbet would not exist. This is quite typical of this ship, I have experienced it several times. Only positive was the fruit in the morning and the check in. I will never travel with Holland America. Other shipping companies offer much better ships and a real service. Most of the staff on Westerdam made a very untrained impression Everything quite terrible! Read Less

As we were going to be in Copenhagen we thought we should do something from there. 3 days in Copenhagen was great and the HOHO(Hop on hop off Bus) was great to get around. The 3 day pass seemed a bit dear but when you consider we got 2 free beers at Carlsberg Brewery and on our last day you could take your bags on the HOHO and when you got off at the mermaid(forget her name) they transported you to your ship for free. As to the MSC Opera we had a good time on board. The ship was clean and tidy and so was our internal cabin. Mudaffar our cabin attendant was polite, funny and cleaned our cabin well. There was enough room in the cabin because we we always on deck somewhere.Dining was good and our waiter/wine steward Jean-Paul made sure everything was alright.Entertainment was good generally but sometimes did not suit us. Regarding port and shore excursions you needed to deal with Kathy as she was informative , polite and very knowledgeable. Really the only problem we had was with a German Tour Guide who obviously had some 40 people with her. We were in the the stern of the ship on deck 12 and been there for some time enjoying the scenery from the lounge. This woman came in and said anybody who doesnt speak German, out as this is a private function. There was no sign outside to tell anyone this when we went in and as the lounge held about 200 and she only needed one corner. We thought ,and told her, she was very arrogant and rude Read Less

We had been on the Oosterdam before and enjoyed the time on board, but the Koningsdam we found the cabins are too small, the shore excursions a complete not of any real value. The 'Hop on Hop off' bus is the best way to enjoy most port. The most shocking is the charge for hotel service aud $25 a day I did know until the amount appeared on my statement they told me it was tips there is nothing to my knowledge in writing I was told that my travel agent should have told me. The Cabin crew knew nothing about tips only what guest give them in the hand at the end of the cruise cash will do they said.So what can Holland America to fix this problum of just debiting guest account when ever the choose unhappy guest. As far as the Dining just average. Entertainment and activities average. Would I go again NO! Read Less

The reception desk clerk was rude when we complained about the cabin during embarkation, she stated that it's only for sleeping and the other clerk said that's what you paid for, $5,300 including taxes for an inside quad cabin with 3 beds only and unable to put our luggages under the bed. They're going to put a cot in between the 2 beds to make us no space to move around,as they applied that they were approved by the American federation safety regulation. We waited for 6 hours for them to show us another quad room, we we're stressed already from flying in and then from arguing with the clerk. No comfort at all except for our cabin housekeeper that was very good and accommodating. The food at Versailles was no extraordinary and sometimes the service was sloppy since they tend to forget stuff and menu was redundant and you'll have to pay extra $ for a rib eye steak or lobster. The Aqua dining area was so ordinary looking liked a cafeteria dining area. We had to sucked up for 9 days for the comfort of what we paid for. Breakfast buffet was the same menu daily. I've been a cruiser 15x that me and my friends will never sail Norwegian cruise line again. Public toilets wouldn't flushed and disgusting. The only consolation was their very good entertainment and the shore excursions. You can't even use the lap pool for free, had to pay. Read Less

There was much that was good about this cruise, in particular the staff, entertainment and food. However from day 2 passengers were falling ill with gastrointestinal outbreaks. This affected the facilities available, for example closure of the jacuzzis, closure of the gaming tables, some of the toilets around the ship, no table top sales, temporary closure of the gym, no self service buffets, constant hand washing and teams of specialist cleaners washing down surfaces constantly. Etc. All of this meant that the cruise we paid for was not as expected. Fred Olsen customer services have offered platitudes and apology but accompanied by a point blank refusal to offer any compensation. Whilst we did not expect anything other than a discount off a future cruise it is very disappointing that the company consider they do not have any moral responsibility to their customers feeling satisfied. Needless to say our party of 6 will NOT be cruising with Fred again. Read Less
