We chose this cruise to get a taste of New Zealand & because we had been advised the Sea Princess was a beautiful ship. After sailing with P&O & MSC prior to this cruise however, we were a little disappointed with our experience on the Sea Princess. Aside from the outbreak of the norovirus, which we fortunately didn't catch, the restaurant menu was very disappointing. It hardly seemed to change whereas other cruises we've been on had theme nights of food on the menu. The food was quite plain & inedible at times. We decided to eat in the buffet mostly, but even though there was lots to choose from, it was always the same. Our outside cabin was quite small. Here again on P&O and MSC we always had a couch in our cabin, but only one tub chair on the Sea Princess (for 2 people) and just as well we're not large people because there wasn't any room to spare either side of the bed. A point of caution, be careful to choose a cabin of 55 sq ft, not a 47 sq ft cabin. Our steward did a great job of getting around our bed to make it each morning. Still don't know how he did it. The ship also lacked shops so not much to browse. The staff on the ship were very good so no complaints there. The entertainment in the theatre was excellent. There was no one monitoring the library, so considering the outbreak of the norovirus, it was concerning to see the turnover of books without any cleansing the book covers. Also one of the cabin boys advised us they're not allowed to wear gloves when cleaning the cabins because passengers would question why they need to wear gloves. My query is, why are they NOT wearing gloves when there's an outbreak of the norovirus. Also, why were they not wearing protective clothing when entering each cabin, for their own protection, as well as the passengers. I wear gloves when cleaning my house. The cruise line needs to review their health & hygiene policies. This cruise has definitely ended our cruising days. Read Less

To celebrate Xmas and new year and to see Milford sound from our balcony which was so great & beautiful enjoying the company of outer people , making new friends. See other from the world cruise as well as the crew members experience the ports such as Christchurch ,Auckland , Napier having fun in the vintage car being a Queen going around the towns ,to see a new suburb grown up from the earthquake in 1930 ,to experience the sea life and tower in Auckland was a wonder . No we didn’t have any kids or teenagers, but see that they were having fun , Like the on board games , enjoyed been waited on so I didn’t, have to cook , but disappoint in some crew (cafe members )not listing to me about my chai tea with soya milk as I do have a reaction with the mixed milk Well I only hope that they will know next time Read Less

Prior cruising with Princess, always excellent service and food. Entertainment needs tweaking, but okay for 1st time cruisers, as can be repetitive from prior cruises. Steward service very good....friendly and professional. Restaurants are excellent, with superb menus and quality food. Wines expensive in dining rooms. Buffet food excellent with brilliant variety and very good food and drink service. Bar and coffee areas are spacious, again with excellent service......a coffee card is a must. Plenty of bar areas to spend time in for coffees, teas, hot chocolates, really nice cocktails, and good selection of beers and spirits. Wheelhouse Bar has two-daily happy hours....buy one drink, get the next for $1 ((fill up your cabin fridge!), includes bottles of bubbly (unopened). Majority of service staff seem to enjoy their jobs on Princess, being ever so helpful and friendly, and knowledgeable. Book at the right time and get good on-board deals....complimentary balcony breakfast, complimentary wine, and complimentary Steakhouse Resaurant meals. And, if you play the pokies enough, you’ll get free play on your next cruise. Overall, Princess know how to look after cruisers. Read Less

I particularly wanted to cruise in Milford Sound and Fjordland - absolutely spectacular. On a previous visit to NZ by bus, I was unable to get into the Sound as the road was blocked by snow - so the scenic cruising was a real treat. The entertainment on this cruise was the best I've ever seen, especially the 'Encore' show, with visiting opera singers. I enjoyed it so much I went to both sessions!. The staff throughout the ship were efficient and friendly. It was good to have regular updates about sickness, also to see the extra precautions and safely measures that were in place. As a solo traveler, I appreciated the dining room staff, who ensured I was seated with friendly people. Anytime dining is ideal for singles. I have often recommended Princess cruises to friends, and when I plan my next cruise, it will definitely be with Princess. Read Less

Have just come off Sea Princess. Travelled from Brisbane to New Zealand for second time. Chose this cruise as we have been on Sea Princess before and enjoyed it both times. Were able to get into Fiordlands both times. The revamped ship is lovely. The rooms have been renovated to a lovely standed and the bed was something else. So soft you just sank into it. Yes, there was a smell of effluent at times but hey, with 3000 people using the toilet at least once a day what can you expect. It wasn’t there all the time. Only ate at Horizon Court for every meal and could not complain on anything. Plenty of variety. Very attentive staff. Only thing I could complain about was I found for me there were too many movies that targeted mainly males, also I think a printed movie guide for the TV in each room telling the times they start would be a good idea? All in all a great cruise and will be doing more cruises with them. Would LOVE to see a cruise from Brisbane to Tasmania, as would a lot of people I spoke to. Embarkation and Disimbarkation very very quick. Stayed in B617 Read Less

I took a 3 night "party cruise" on this ship on the 5th October 2017 from Brisbane to Sydney Australia with one stop in Newcastle. I have been on the ship before but not since it was refurbished inside. The Sun Princess is a unique ship as that it is smaller than the other Princess ships and has some nice public rooms but also outdated areas that cannot be fixed. Since the refurbishment Princess have turned the nightclub from what used to be a dark and dingy place into a bright and roomy sports bar. This was a quiet and good place for an evening drink or before the party crowd came in at the late hours. Also the bars around the Atrium are popular but with limited spaces. If you have anytime dining then you will have more chance of getting a seat at these bars. The bar service is great and the seats are comfortable. I found the entertainment to be rather mediocre for Australia. The theatre itself does not seem to have the ability to put on the high tech and energy filled production shows that the newer ships can cater to. None the less the entertainment was interesting enough to not ruin the experience, but at the same time I have seen better from Princess on other sailings. In some way it was good because I enjoyed more time at the bar. Food in Australia is hit and miss. All the Princess favourites are removed from the main dining menu. I absolutely love the baked New York cheesecake for desert in the main dining room and to have it completely removed on Australian based cruises in favour of a pavlova is rather disappointing. It is also sad to see all the regular wines disappear from the menu as well. To sum up it is still a decent ship and can offer a really good and enjoyable party cruise or short cruise. I would cruise on this ship anytime for a short party cruise but would not do it for a longer holiday. Read Less

Felt that the Princess experience has been dumbed down for the Australian / New Zealand market. More focus on partying and sales than anything else. Port lecturer delivered what was standard spiel even though the detail did not apply. For example talked about the market in Noumea and how to get there and noted it was open to mid day. We berthed after 1pm! Buffet seemed to have a really random selection of items. No theme. Quality not that good. Food in MDR generally better. Overall a pleasant experience. Certainly not one to rush back too. If you like beaches and drinking then you might enjoy it more than we did. Was really surprised at the number of school aged children aboard. As it was not school holidays they were missing school! Fortunately they were not to intrusive however they did take over the pool area. Embarkation and disembarkation very smooth. Read Less

We chose this cruise to see if cruising was for us.(we are now converted) and after reading previous reviews on this site we had an open mind.My wife and I flew from NZ to Brisbane to link up with my wife's sister and partner and had 2 adjacent ocean view cabins on Baja deck(10). Embarkation was well organised and the enthusiastic welcome as we walked onto the ship was the forerunner of excellent service and organisation from day 1 to day 7. There was a real cross section of passengers, from children in strollers up to older people with walkers, some even with powered mobility scooters, plus a few groups celebrating birthday milestones. We are in the mid 60's to 70's range but the on board activities, entertainment, shows made us feel young. Service and organisation in all areas was top notch and the food presentation and variety was excellent. We tried most restaurants and dining rooms and could not fault anything. The Sterling Steakhouse was brilliant, thoroughly recommend it, perhaps it could be expanded in size as it was booked out every night. Didn't see too many diners in the Japanese sushimi restaurant on this cruise. We went ashore at Noumea and did a Hop on/Hop off tour that we picked up from the local Tourist centre, Not over impressed with Noumea but at least we can say we have been there. Travelled overnight to the Isle of Pines and went ashore via the ships tenders.Spent a few hours on the island, had a swim, bought some souvenirs and generally strolled around. Did not get off the ship next day at Mystery Island as we preferred to relax on board but by all accounts other passengers said it was better than the Isle of Pines. Our luck! Participated in many of the on board activities such as trivia, bingo, casino etc and enjoyed the many bands and musicians wherever they performed, indoors or outdoors. Special mention of 2 of the production shows in the Theatre, "Bravo" and "British Invasion" which were of real Broadway standard. Needless to say we have taken advantage of making a future cruise deposit while on board as a result of this enjoyable experience. Read Less

We picked this cruise because we we invited to cruise with friends that surprised us with them renewing their vows. The Captain did the service and the staff made the day so very special for our friends. It was very special to be there with them to see them do it again after 30 years. I was their bridesmaid 30 years ago and was so happy to be there again this time and be part of it. All staff concerned were very professional and made the trip just so special. The fine dinning waiters from table 10 were absolutely spot on with their service and deserve a Huge 10 out of 10. Thank you guys for making out trip memorable. All in all considering this was our 1st cruise we would give the whole experience a huge thumbs up. Thanks again for helping me with my dissabilities. I was very impressed with the hygiene practiced by the staff and the lovely personalities of all of the staff. Read Less

Joined the cruise at Brisbane on the 08 September 2017, the grain terminal is not the most inviting point of departure but boarding was ok. However as my wife has a disability the extra long walk to get on to the ship was problematic, I except that this was out of the control of princess cruise line. On the ship made our way to find our state room which was ready on boarding, found the room to be nice if somewhat dated ample storage but an extra small bathroom. At this time also meet out room attendant Maxi a big thumbs up to Maxi he made our stay well worth wile and a credit to Princess Cruise Line, in fact found all the staff on the golden princess to be happy and helpful again a big thumbs up well done! There are however a few negatives and I do hope that princess cruise line take them on board; 1. Food/Dinning This was our second time cruising with princess and we were traveling with relatives that were cruising for the fist time, I had spent many months praising the standard of the food on princess compared to other cruise lines. I could not have been more wrong, I could not believed that the standard could have dropped so much, both in quality and quantity. The main dinning room offered few options and was repeated its menu, wile the food in the Horizon Court was poor at best and in some cases inedible. The food however in the extra fee dinning options was very good and well worth the extra $30. 2. Entertainment By enlarge entertainment was lack luster, with the theater being way to small to cope the number of guests in attendance on most nights that we did get into the shows it was standing room only. The same goes for the international café and Atrium Way, Way, to small for the number of people on the ship, during any show you had difficulty just walking though this area let alone seeing the show. All in all the experience of this cruise was a big disappointment but I saved the best to last; I became ill on the last night of the cruise (And highlight this as a warning to future cruises) dew to falling very ill I was taken to the ships hospital where I spent the night, the staff were wonderful and looked after me well. The next morning in Sydney I was discharged from the Hospital and presented with my bill. $5500 that's right for the night and told that the account would have to be paid before we disembarked the ship So Don't get sick on a cruise, but DO Make sure that you have Travel Insurance. Wile we had to pay the bill we were covered by our insurance thank god!! I am sure that all cruise line operate in the same manor but it was some what of a shock and well worth a heads up! Yes I would sail with Princess Cruise Line again but not on the Golden Princess! Read Less

Sailed from Sydney to Darwin on Sea Princess. Ship is showing its age a little, but well maintained, clean and fabulous crew and amenities. Cabin (C627) balcony suite was small but very comfortable, clean and in good condition, comfortable bed, very quiet and not far from lifts. Cafe dining buffet was good (probably 7 out of 10), and restaurants were very good (8 out of 10), but steak house was divine (9 out of 10 - no one is perfect, but this went close!!). Fantastic, friendly and helpful staff everywhere despite being poorly paid (they rely heavily on tips to make a reasonable living). Evening entertainment was fantastic, particularly geared for an older audience. Very few children on the cruise, and fortunately those that were on board (this time) were quiet and well behaved. Excellent value for money and Princess cruises will be well up on our list for our next cruise adventure. Read Less

Just returned from 10 day cruise in Pacific. Overall very nice made more special by Renewing our Vows on board. To start with embarkation was as expected a little busy with a later than normal boarding due to extra sanitisation taking place. The average age of cruisers would have been around 70 ,even though we are a lot younger made no difference to us . We chose anytime dining which I understand is relatively new on board and can recommend this as we got to meet new people most nights with great conversation had. Entertainment most nights was very good with special guests coming on board and the usual Princess singers and dancers in between. We had most breakfasts and lunches at Horizons ( ok only) and we choose specialty restaurants for dinners. Special mention to Stirling Steakhouse , very nice indeed. We did go on any Princess organised shore excursions, instead either went for walks or organised our our private excursions which suited our needs and more importantly our budget. Special mention to the staff who organised our Renewal of Vows package, cannot speak highly enough of them , very highly recommended to those considering. Did not use the gym but it looked spacious with plenty of equipment and nice view out to sea. On the last night we watched movie under the stars for something different, can recommend if you need quieter night or if travelling with younger ones. The ship itself overall was very nice ( staff great) with everything functioning and working, did not witness and issues. It is getting a little tired but did not detract from overall experience. Will we go again , yes absolutely. Read Less

We would like to thank all the staff in the dinning rooms , the cafe, the bars ,the deck attendants etc they all deserve recognition, THANK YOU and THANK YOU sun Princess for giving my husband and i a wonderful, 10 day cruise we will never forget , we will be cruising with you again within two years.. We had our annual convention on board the Sun Princess so had no choice of ships or cruise line. This line caters for the old and very old. Passengers lived in fear for the total time of contracting Nora virus which has been on this ship since January The ship is old and out dated. The wait staff were great, they had a huge job keeping the virus at bay. The ship was very clean and food hygiene was also very good. Officers were never seen, staff of rank when about not friendly at all. Customer service desk also un friendly. Our owners suite was large, bathroom excellent. Bedroom was spacious also with a very comfortable bed. Both TV were large and modern. Room steward was excellent. Lounge suite needed a good clean by professional hot water extraction, all carpets also required professional cleaning. We will never sail on the Sun Princess again. We had 4 of us, 1 suite and 1 room with a window. With our room and the other one cost us $11,000.00 for 7 days. Read Less

We sailed with a group of 22 and this itinerary was the first choice of the group, many of whom hadn't cruised before. Embarkation and disembarkation were smooth. For a large group it was difficult to find any public area on sea days to meet together without us paying for a meeting room. In the end we met in the Horizons buffet dining area mid afternoon but not as comfortable as a lounge area. The entertainment was very good - The Adele experience and A NZ singer giving excellent performances and the food was satisfactory. The ship was full and I was told that this is always the case as it is a cruise for which you need no passport so is very popular with Australians. The staff were courteous and clearly working very hard and didn't have much time for casual interaction of to go the extra mile. We were late to embark as the ship had extra cleaning due to the Norovirus on the previous cruise and 2 days into the voyage the captain came over the PA to say that again they had to take serious measures to combat the gastro intestinal illness on the ship. This measure was accepted by everyone I saw and it meant extra vigilance, hand washing, and you couldn't serve yourself in the buffet or drinks which slowed everything down considerably. Two people in our group became ill and were confined to the cabin which is standard procedure. The weather was gorgeous and the port sparkly and warm. We took the little Sugar train in Port Douglas which was a trip of about 20 minutes each way with a short stopover in the middle. It's a little bit of history and quite pleasant without being strenuous. The train stop is next to the wharf. We didn't take any of the ship's shore excursions but noted there were independent operators at the wharf in each port. Tendering in Airlie Beach and Port Douglas was assisted by huge catamarans which joined the ships tenders transferring passengers, making it a quick and comfortable journey. Read Less

The Sun Princess still provides excellent dining, entertainment, activities, port & shore excursions and an overall service experience. The repeated noro virus problem is a worry though. Embarkation was delayed to further sanitize facilities. The steps required to combat this health situation also tends to reduce the overall cruise experience, with library books and written material missing, special sales reduced etc. Whilst I am not sure that Princess is at fault, since cases were reported very early, it does create a lot of extra work for the crew as well!! Perhaps the buffet could be reconfigured though (like the Pacific Eden Pantry) to permanently get away from passengers handling food at the buffet etc. Basically, this short cruise gave us an opportunity to visit family in Cairns, and friends at Port Douglas, so we weren't looking for excursions (we have visited these ports many times before). Although, we were keen to see how Airlie Beach has fared since the Cyclone. We were also keen to see Willis Island for the first time. It was interesting to hear from one of the officers stationed on this Weather Station by radio broadcast to all on board and to witness a weather balloon launch. The entertainment on board is still very good. We enjoyed all of the acts as well as the Princess Dancers and Singers, the Orchestra and the other music throughout the cruise. We are still booked on future cruises because of the overall positive experience and rewards program. Read Less

My husband and I sailed to New Caledonia for 10 days. My review is as follows: Ship: First impression when I walked onboard - old. First impression as I walked down the corridor of our deck (Baja) - old & faded. Sun Princess needs refurbishing and is not as big as other Princess ships. The cabins are very small. Wardrobe space is small. There was no bedside table on one side of the queen bed. Cabin/bathroom was well maintained but needs upgrading. Public areas were dated but ok. I am very prone to seasickness and I took tablets for the whole trip. There was only one day of rough sea and lots of people were sick due to the ship rolling from side to side quite a lot which leads me to think that because of the age of the ship, the stabilisers are not as good or does not have as many as other larger ships. Restaurants: We only visited the Horizon buffet restaurant. For the first five days the food was very bland and boring - same items every day & night. Last five days a few more spicy dishes were provided. The International Café was excellent - all food was complimentary & you just pay for the drinks. Islands visited: All were beautiful with the exception of Noumea (dirty and buildings covered in graffiti) & Vila (dirty). Onboard Entertainment: Theatre shows were good but not long enough (45mins). Daytime shows in the Piazza & Atrium were boring & poor quality. Mostly 'wedding singers'. Although I enjoyed this cruise, I would not do a Pacific cruise again as all places are pretty much the same. Based on better experiences on other Princess ships, I would not sail on the Sun Princess again. Tip: Ship Wifi is very expensive. Find free wifi when you go ashore. Tip: Don't buy the alcohol package unless you are a BIG drinker. It's cheaper to buy as you go. Cocktails were $13.95 ea. There are 2 Happy Hours every day in the Wheelhouse Bar where you can buy 2 for 1 drinks. Read Less

This was my 5th cruise and 4th time to the first three islands on this cruise, I was really looking forward to the last two islands. On the whole the service was good or as good as my first cruise a few things let it down, I was with my wife and daughter, this was my daughters first cruise she loved it, so we all took the beverage package so we wouldn't have to worry about what we were spending, had done this on my last cruise and it worked pretty well. Unfortunately we kept getting charged extra, we knew how it works you buy one drink at a time. It seems some of the staff don't know how it works especially the dining room, we would go to guests services to get things sorted out and they treated us like we were criminals, as you can imagine we were not impressed spending $1800 dollars to have no hassles, I would not recommend purchasing the beverage package. Overall we found the ship to be very nice loved the décor and the design of the ship. The food was of a decent quality with plenty of variety, the service in the dining room was good and friendly. The entertainment was a disappointment compared to other cruises I've been on, only song and dance and comedy in the theatre, I'm used to seeing plays acted out on stage on all the previous cruises I've been on and was looking forward to some of the same unfortunately that did not happen. Seems everything is aimed at the over 70's age group on this ship. Champagne Beach was the highlight of the cruise definitely recommend going there, however I might have find a cruise line that caters for younger adults next time. Read Less

The time was right for a getaway an the caring nature of the service personnel an other crew members was excellent. A top Enrichment Guest Speaker presented informative and interactive talks, Stage Performers were also top line, and Catering was tasteful with variety even before considering the speciality dining options. Ports were interesting, with affordable on-shore options. Vanuatu ports stops were marvellous an getting on an off the ship was so easy under the watchful eye an helping hands of the Security Team. Extra precautions were in place due to problem with virus on previous cruise but this was well managed over the early days of the cruise and I not interfere with our enjoyment and participation. Plenty of relaxation lounges and deck options and excellent whirlpools after shore walks to relax the body. Champagne Bay is certainly a South Pacific Paradise, Luganville a friendly town, Port Vila a shoppers haven, Lifou an explorers treat, and Noumea a place to visit. Embarkment went very smoothly, unfortunately, the ship was leaving later than planned because of the Norovirus from the previous cruise. This is the sister ship to the Sea princess, so we had no problems getting around the ship as I have previously done 2 other cruises on her. First time on the Sun. We were on this cruise with 2 friends that we met on the Aria last October. This was their first time on Princess, and they enjoyed this cruise very much. Our cabin was small, I think if we had not had the bed as a queen, it would have been better, I had a very small space to get around the end of the bed and the wardrobe. For the first 5 days, everything was served by the staff because of the problems on the previous cruise... We got used to this, and when after the days you could serve yourself, I saw a number of people standing there, and then realised they could serve them selves, I did it too, it's funny what you get used too... Service in the Anytime dining was very well organised. We found a waiter we liked (Exel) so asked to be put on his table for the rest of the cruise, so basically booked the table for the last 6 days. Tenders were very good over to Champagne Bay, we got there early and did not even need a tender number. All in All, I would say this was the best cruise we have done out of the 5. Meals were substandard compared to other Cruise lines and the Entertainment was also poor with Hypnotist and Magic shows. Some of the passengers even went to sleep in the theater. The Cruise Director Tim left the ship in Honolulu and we were left with his Deputy who was hopeless at the job. The Front desk staff were rude and didn't try to help at times also. Sorry this is a negative review but we will Never sail again with this Old Peoples Home as there are far far better Company's sailing the 7 Seas and many of them don't have this Class System that Princess has. We wanted a 10 day cruise at this time of year but it turned out a nightmare. The start was reception they were so rude,I have never been treated so badly. 2 days into trip I took ill they put it down as the virus which I say was food polsening as I did not have flue symptoms, they then had the bill up to my cabin before I even got back there and wanted paid straight away $860 for which I told them I would settle my bill before I get off ship so they blocked me from useing my card on board no explaination. They Buffett food was cold you couldn't even get a warm piece of toast.i paid the bill even then the atm wouldn't work and they argued with me and wouldn't believe it wouldn't work until another couple tried to use it no go so they came and told him but no apology so I gave him my card to take from and then he said they don't take that card N.A.B then another staff looked and said yes they do no apology again. Then they did get the virus so we couldn't even make acup of tea ourselves. We had to get them to serve us and still cold food in buffet. They then turned the aircon to freezing we were all complaining and were wearing jumpers some with coats on which we were all getting the sniffles it was so cold. It is a trip to remember and after being treated so bad I am deciding on ever going cruising again I would not recommend this cruise line to anybody go if you want to get sick and make sure you have plenty of money for doctors. Cold buffet, rude staff, freezing cold, people coughing all over you trip we will not forget. Never again on that cruise line not recommended at all. Read Less
