The Nieuw Statendam just came out of dry dock, so this was an opportunity to see what a newish ship was like as well as a transatlantic; the holiday time sailing was an added bonus. The dates allowed us to spend some time in Rome before departure, so we were able to do a land cruise. Returning to FLL helped minimize flight costs.

I would recommend you pick a different ship and even a different cruise line completely. It is really that bad. The worse of the worst? The food. The overall food quality and selection is poor. Not what you would expect from HAL. The food is either way overcooked or undercooked. The service is slow and there are way too many mistakes. We have near 30 cruises so far, split almost evenly across the 5 major cruise lines. Our best tops are HAL and Celebrity. This is our first cruise on the NS and our 4th cruise on HAL. We have sailed on many Holland American cruises and always had a wonderful experience. We just got off a 21 day transatlantic from Fort Lauderdale to Rome. I booked this cruise (along with the preceding 10 day cruise to Scandinavia and Germany) one month before boarding. It was a fabulous price so we decided to go for it even though we had to fly to Copenhagen from Hawaii, and had to take the Covid 19 test in Copenhagen a couple of days before boarding. This was our 5th Transatlantic cruise and by fare the worst as far as entertainment. We booked this cruise for the musical venues. Lincoln Center on other ships was usually great. We chose this cruise as a ticket home, in a more interesting way than a plane ride, after sailing around the Mediterranean on a Norwegian ship (Spirit).
