The locals were charging people to go swimming here so I didn't go in. I went for a walk up the hill to Our Lady of Lourdes and then down to St Francis Xavier's - not much to see at either location. Friends who went snorkelling said that it was fantastic so perhaps it's worth the $15US if you're keen on swimming. Read Less

Lifou, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia Lifou is a tender port and there is not a lot available around the jetty as you depart from the tender. There are several tin huts and small structures with a two tent area for fried and barbeque food items and souvenirs. Some of souvenirs are made in China, so be sure to check. The items are also pretty expensive and there is no bargaining. The nearby beach was rather small but adequate with toilet facilities nearby. As you leave the area, there is a main road: to the left is the old Catholic church requiring some vigor with 200 steps to reach it. You can see the church from the beach. To the right is a road leading to a small area with another church. There are ship tours available that take you to farther out regions. There are some mildly interesting areas to explore around the port. A campground, huts and some houses were nearby. The ship passengers were unaware of a ceremony that took place between the island officials and the ship’s officers as this was the Explorer of the Seas inaugural sailing to Lifou. There was a local cultural performance before the ceremony. The ship’s officers received a lei and traditional woven straw hat and the ship had several bags of gifts for the islanders. We were nearby when we heard the singing and went to view the ceremony. Unfortunately, it was raining, but the officers were under a tent and the natives didn’t seem to be bothered by rain. Those of us who had umbrellas or gear were more fortunate. I suspect that the ship didn’t want that many people to crowd the ceremonial area and that is why we were not told ahead of time. Most people on the ship were totally unaware of this event ever happening. Read Less

Family members walked around the island. Took photos. In total 25 family members traveled together to celebrate my nephews 21st birthday. Those that did leave the boat say they had a great time on the island.

We had perfect weather. We snorkelled off the beach, looked at the markets and went for a walk to the church. It was a really nice day.

We walked to Jinek Bay, the church on the hill and the Cave with swimming hole. Jinek Bay....5-10 minute walk from the wharf. Walk up road to t-intersection and turn left then right at sign. Free to visit Jinek but $15 to swim or snorkel. Beautiful sights. Church..... 10-15 minute walk. Walk up road to t-intersection and turn left and keep going. Some steps but not too many, take a break and enjoy the view on the way. Free to visit but a donation bucket in church. Cave......10-15 minute walk. Walk up road to t-intersection and turn RIGHT. Turn left at the sign and find the guide to take you there. $5-10 each to visit depending on the time of day. A steep slippery walk to cave, so be careful with kids or oldies. Fantastic sight inside the cave with only one light, blackness and a black spooky swimming hole to enjoy. Read Less

Lovely again, some people stung by small jelly fish. We walked up the hill to a church and lookout. Would possibly do a tour on this island next time.

Walk to both churches. They are both different walks. Worth it though. Amazing views at the one on the hill - and beautiful wild flowers along the way. And the other one is a nice walk - see a traditional hut along the way and also houses of the locals. We didn't book an excursion for this one. No need. We walked down the beach and found a quieter spot and had a nice snorkel. We looked at the markets too. Read Less
