Lifou is a beautiful island accessed by tender boats. It's very hot so take water with you and money for drink (coconut or soft drinks available). They take AUS$ and NC Franc. Try to travel light or with a backpack. You may do a bit of walking if you choose to visit the church on the hill (worth it for the view and the butterflies) or Jinek Bay. We really wanted to go snorkeling at Jinek Bay but there were no tours on offer pre-cruise. The ship did not advertise that we would could only purchase permits to Jinek Bay on the ship so many of us were turned away when we rocked up expecting to buy them there. Really disappointed because it looked stunning. Had to make do with swimming on the main beach near the wharf which was still nice. Good idea to take reef shoes with you as the beach is covered in broken coral. Read Less

this is a beautiful spot and if you have the energy ( you need to do it once in your lifetime) take the walk up to the church on the cliff top - along a bitumen road for around 500 metres and then up the side of the hill - bit rough walking but there is a handrail - remember to take some water and just stop along the way for a rest - the view at the top is fabulous and it makes you wonder how did they build it up there plus how did they get the statue there it is enormous. We went to the beach and snorkelled with the turtles. Great experience, great clear beach. Would have liked more time to explore. Highly recommend the visit.

My husband and I decided not to take an excursion, for it was a short stay in Lifou. The ship arrived at about 8 a.m. and all aboard time was 3:30 p.m.--a rather tight schedule. Lifou, Nouvelle Caledonie is mostly beach area. Perfect for sunbathers. The ship was docked away from the island, away from the reefs, thus, we took a tender boat from the Jewel to Lifou. Many places to see when you walk up a long winding but slight slope (such as a big open market where in it are individual tables filled with souvenirs; various foods and drinks cooked and made in the premises; hair braiding; even a money exchange table out in the open attended by three elderly female government officials. There is a bus that runs every half hour that takes you to town (a 45-minute ride). On top of the hill is the most beautiful and picturesque view of the ocean, palm trees, the beach, the docks and the NCL Jewel in the background. Breathtaking! Read Less

Jinek Bay is world class snorkeling. $10usd is an absolute bargain. Unfortunately as there are no tours here everyone comes here even though they can’t swim and snorkel and will ruin the coral

Lots of coral on the beach and in the water. Wear reef shoes if you want to go swimming. Walked to the little church on the hill overlooking the bay. Lots of people got their hair braided here.

We walked up to the church on the hill first, then walked back along the main road to Easo, not much to see there. They dont have many market stalls on this island. Went snorkeling and was loving it until i encountered the biting fish. They were only anout 10-15 cm but they charged at you and they bit you on your toes until you left their area. They were a lot of them in the water and a lot of people got bitten, they didnt leave marks or break the skin but were still scary. The bonus was the giant turtles were swimming around near the pier so you could swim along with them and touch them on the shell. Read Less

Snorkelling at Jinek Bay was excellent. Cost is $15. The island itself was hilly and the swimming beach wasn't very big but it was very pretty.
