We ended our perfect cruise with a disaster. Viking Air Travel cancelled our reserved Business Class seats from Zurich at the end of our post-cruise excursion. We paid $600 extra to "customize" our air travel thru Viking. We wanted to fly KLM and wanted to connect thru Amsterdam to go home. We did not want to deal with Paris airport transfer. 11 hours before our departure, we received an e-mail ( not a phone call) telling us we were now flying on Air France to Paris. We lost our reserved seats on KLM with 11 hours notice. When I called Viking Air Travel, I was told by the agent that the KLM flights were cancelled. I checked with KLM to learn that this was a lie. I called Viking back and spoke with Marta who put me on a 45 minute hold, only to return and tell me that the airline cancelled my reservation because the connecting flight was departing 5 minutes LATER than originally scheduled. How does that justify cancelling my seats? I have gone thru 2 supervisors who refuse to tell me why my Business Class seats reserved and paid 6 months earlier, were surrendered by Viking to other people. Our new flight did not allow my wife and I to sit together or pre-order our meals. We did not get the meals we wanted. We connected in Paris which was a nightmare. It is clear that Viking sold our seats for a profit and put us on another airline to make money. They have no regard for their customers and have no integrity in telling the truth. I will never use them again. Read Less

This review is for the Viking "Rhine Getaway" cruise on the new longship Ingvi from Amsterdam to Basel with the two night pre-cruise extension in Amsterdam. We made the mistake of trying to take advantage of an offer from Discover Card that required us to use their travel agency. The only "special" request that we had was that the cabin be equipped with a refrigerator to store my insulin, all of the new longships and several of the older ships have this. The first six trip proposals that we received were for ships without refrigerators in the cabins, by the time that that we could book a reservation on the longship Ingvi it was for seven weeks past our requested cruise date. Our credit card was charged for a higher amount than I had authorized, we eventually received a refund for the excess amount. We only received the Viking cruise kit two days before our sailing date. Whenever we tried to contact Viking for information we were told that we had to work through our travel agent. Every time that we spoke with someone from the travel agency it was with a different agent. We booked flights and transfers as part of the package, big mistake. I'm sure that we were charged twice as much as we should have been for airfare. For our transfer from Schiphol airport to the Moevenpick hotel we had to search for an agent who made it clear that she didn't care about us and that we should "wait over there". We ended up riding with eight people in a van with seating for six and holding our luggage on our laps. At the hotel our room was not ready, so they checked our luggage and carry ons. After spending four hours walking around Amsterdam on our own we were allowed to check into our room at 4:00 pm but had to wait five more hours for our luggage to be located. The hotel said that they were "very busy". The Moevenpick hotel room was adequate but not worth the price, the included breakfast was spectacular. We took the mediocre Viking walking tour around the same section of Amsterdam that we had previously explored on our own and spent additional time walking and on a canal cruise. When we returned at 7:00 pm our room had not been made up, the hotel said that they were "very busy". There was a Viking representative at the Moevenpick hotel, but her dining and tour recommendations were very overpriced compared to what we found on our own. Don't go to the recommended restaurant at the library, there is a Subway fast food restaurant three doors down from the hotel with better food. The "included transfer" from the hotel to the Ingvi consisted of walking from the hotel to the ship. Once again our room was not ready, once it was we had to wait another three hours for our luggage to arrive. We took another Viking walking tour of central Amsterdam which covered the same area as the tour the previous day. The exterior of the Viking longships is very unattractive compared to the ships from other cruise lines. The interior is acceptable except that the lounge is too small for events attended by all passengers, the cabin layout is very efficient given the limited size. We had a cabin on the lowest level, we didn't mind the porthole window but the noise was terrible. We missed not having a clock or a top sheet for the bed. The service from the cabin attendant was excellent. Dinner the first night was seated at 7:00 pm, we didn't get any food until 9:00 pm. In general the ship's breakfast buffet was excellent, the lunch buffet/service good, and the dinner service skimpy and slow. Tuesday night was German food night served buffet style in the lounge, the restaurant, and the galley. There was five times as much food as anyone could possible sample. The food was better than anything else served on the cruise, I wished that they had saved the leftovers to serve the next two days. If you don't order the 'Silver Spirits' drink package you are out of luck getting any beverage service. The included Kinderdijk windmill and Marksburg castle tours were very good. Our guide for Cologne spent all of his time talking about how Catholics mistreated the Jews, celebrities he had met, parties he had been to, and current middle east politics. The Heidelberg and Strasbourg guides abandon you in the middle of the cities and tell you that you should look for your busses "back there" after shopping for a couple of hours. On the Black Forest tour the bus drives on winding roads past beautiful scenery at 100 kph without stopping so that you have more time to spend in the souvenir shops. The guide was from Italy and couldn't answer questions about the region. We didn't take any of the optional tours. We enjoyed walking through the towns of Rudesheim, Speyer, and Kehl on our own during these times. Our flight out of Basel Switzerland was at 6:50 am, so we had to get up at 3:00 am to have our luggage ready at 3:45 am and depart at 4:45 am. They did an efficient job getting us off of the ship and to the airport, but I don't understand why they schedule leaving at that time for what is supposed to be a leisure trip. In summary we do not feel that this trip was a good value and we will not be taking any more Viking cruises.   Read Less

Our first river cruise; wife and I, and 2 grown girls wanted to see some of Europe and thought a river cruise was a good way to do it. Booked 1 of 2 suites for ourselves and I standard balcony room for kids. I booked with Viking because told "the best" and seemed to have good overall reviews. Expensive. Booked the airfare with Viking travel; excellent value and flexibility (started with a few days in London). Arrived in Budapest; Viking reps met us, and took us to ship. Included with the suite was a private car; gave us a van, which was ok since we had girls with us and they then came with us instead of bus. When checking into room, was told the "hotel manager" would take us to room (part of the "suite" deal). Manager was from previous cruise and begrudgingly took us and showed us room, all the time talking about how he was supposed to be on vacation now. Not a good start. Began with some excursions in Budapest; including a food tasting. That night my wife and I became ill, we assumed from the food, and stayed in the next morning. I attempted a walking tour in Bratislava that afternoon, became ill and passed out/hitting my head. Ended up in ER, but was OK. The guide was able to contact ship and advise my wife; they put her in a taxi to Hospital. We were basically on our own from that point; understand there are no doctors on board unless they are cruising with you! Fortunately there were very nice people on board who helped us out. Made it back to ship, not much from staff other than please fill out an accident report. Ship itself was clean and pretty nice. It seemed there may have been nicer ships on the river, but Viking seemed to be on the better side. Our suite was roomy and nice, but its in the very rear of ship and is noisy when moving. Cleaning staff excellent and very nice! Food was usually good; did return a few plates, with food overdone. Everyone eats meals at same time, so I can understand would be hard to serve that much at the same time. You don'd have much privacy at meals, tables seat at least 6. There is an optional spot upstairs however very limited seating as they only have 1 server there, so first come first serve, and was a popular option. Would be nice if they allowed mover service there. Waiters very nice, however some have limited English- not a big deal however some cruisers had difficulty communicating. Excursions were OK; we noticed later that many people did self-tour which I would have preferred, as I don't need all the details the guides sometimes over explain; sometimes I feel to fill the time. They want you to book early; however they always had space and were trying to get more people on them, so don't feel pressured to advance book. Towns very picturesque! Enjoyed walking around. Upon departure, they again supposed to take us in private car to Munich airport. They tried to put us and they people in other suite on 1 large bus by ourselves, because "the bus has to go to the airport anyway, so just go on the bus." The other suite complained enough to get a private car; we at this point didn't care so went on the bus (by ourselves); our kids had already left on another bus. That was unacceptable; we paid a lot for the suite that included the car. Overall, the managing staff on the ship mediocre at best. The working staff very nice and helpful. I would not do a Viking cruise again; the value not there. Read Less

Don't mean to sound negative, but didn't have the fantastic experience so many others report. Airport pickup at Budapest went well, as did the pre-cruise experience, despite poor weather. Guide for Jewish Budapest one of the best on entire trip. However ... Had no lunch on embarkation day as it was supposed to be provided on board. We were a bit late arriving at the dock, so nothing available until dinner that night. Many passengers in larger groups, so a bit awkward at mealtimes; not to say we didn't encounter many nice, interesting folks, just that they tended to gravitate in their groups. Staff were unfailingly nice, excursions very well presented, although one guide I found very political. Director did a terrific job advising of photo opportunities from ship, as well the lock process. Food was adequate, if not outstanding. Breakfast the best omelettes I've run across, lunch a hybrid salad bar + pasta station, along with ordering from a menu. Dinner was truly a mixed bag. Soup wasn't just broth-based, but downright oily. Fish was very good, but meat selections not so much. Dessert varied from terrific to ho-hum. Want to give the staff full credit for being zealous about catering to dietary needs - at breakfast they made a point of consulting with passengers to plan the day ahead for them. We were warned ship wifi wasn't the fastest. Unfortunately, my phone signal did not work well in the cabin, though off the ship it was fine. Laundry a bit expensive, but prompt service with good results. Held several hours on boat for last transfer to Munich Airport, cutting departure closer than I'd have liked. Not sorry we went, but just didn't get the "Wow!" factor. Read Less

I enjoyed last years Danube cruise so much I had no hesitation to re-enlist with Viking. However, since ours was a last minute choice I WOULD HAVE TRIED ANOTHER LINE IF ONE Had been available. I received no discount for signing on to a previously cancelled stateroom. We were on the bottom level, whereas last year we had a French balcony. We feel the French balcony was not worth the extra charge even if we could have gotten one. The ship , cabin, dining were comparable to last year although I felt two of the dinner meals I had were average. Last years activities were only slightly better. Service was on par with last year. I I felt Viking air might have gotten us non stop to Amsterdam from JFK ( maybe a result of a last minute reservation To say we saw 4 countries is really not true. You see nothing worth mentioning in Amsterdam and the cruise through the Netherlands was dull. Didn’t see anything of Basel Switzerland, just busfrom boat to airport. We did not travel with anyone We would not go again perhaps another river in Europe One word regarding superior seamamanship : excellent He got is through when other boats couldn’t get through Regarding an optional tour in Strasbourg Pricey 179 euros each but definitely the excursion highlight Read Less

I understand that river cruises have smaller ships and therefore smaller cabins. This was my first river cruise and I can only compare it to Regent Seven Seas, Paul Gauguin, and Carnival. This is not an inexpensive trip and the price per day excluding airfare costs more than RSS and PG but not Carnival. Viking does not come close to RSS in terms of food quality and the quality of the included free excursions. Most free excursions are at most a short bus ride around town and a walking tour. Some were just a tour guide who met you at the dock. Well prepared food but not gourmet quality. Very friendly staff who went the extra mile. Cruise director seemed very friendly and knowledgeable. Unlike ocean cruises one afternoon/evening was spent traveling with a docking in Budapest at 10PM. Seemed like a wasted day to me. I would more than likely not return to Viking. Viking ocean cruises is the top rated line? Must offer a completely different experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise from Basel to Amsterdam because of the diversity of the the ports and we were not disappointed. From the Swiss Alps to the below sea level Holland, every view and port were extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, every staff member made us feel appreciated and special. Every local tour guide was knowledgeable, personable and entertaining! We loved hearing their stories and better understanding their history, culture and architecture. The food was fabulous... breakfast, lunch and dinner!!! Chef Bobby will forever be remembered. His humor and passion for his craft were infectious. We primarily cruised at night so we could get to our next location. But the Middle Rhine... included daytime cruising past numerous castles and other sites. We appreciated the Activity Director's running commentary abouttes we were passing. Even though we had a standard cabin, it had plenty of storage to help us keep our belongings organized. The bed was comfy and the bathroom had every amenity we needed. The public areas offered plenty of places to sit, enjoy the view and visit with friends. Read Less

We want to do several European trips and started with this one on the Rhine. Going back to go on the Danube cruise with Viking later this year. The included tours were really good, interesting tour guides, a lot of background and history provided at the places we went. The Viking staff was (by and large) outstanding, my wife even tipped one of the waiters 10 Euros as he remembered our names so well. The only not so good comment is that on a few occasions at dinner, when they say that wine and beer are included, I was completely ignored at dinner with an empty wine glass. Even those at the other end of the table were served and I was ignored. Maybe you have to go to the end of the room and pour it yourself. No onboard pool, fitness room or fitness activities other than a walking track around the top deck. Read Less

We arrived in Budapest 2 days early. Fanni and Andrea were wonderful. Great concierge service. Gave us great ideas and directions. Agnes took us on the Taste of Budapest tour. She was a wonderful guide. Carmen in Melk was also a terrific guide, wonderful sense of humor. On our post extension tour to Salzburg and Munich, Fred was so knowledgeable and was an outstanding guide. It was also interesting to take a brief bus tour of Marcos' home town (Oberammergau). Friends ask us what was our favorite part of the cruise. Difficult to say...too many choices. All shore excursions were very organized. Cabins are a little small. Next time we would upgrade to a suite with veranda and French balcony. Wonderful service. Dining room staff were top notch. We celebrated our 50th anniversary on the cruise in Vienna. The Dining room staff made it memorable. The pre-cruise hotel (the Corinthia in Budapest) was an elegant hotel. The post-cruise hotel (Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg) was wonderfully refurbished with huge rooms. The Munich hotel (Hilton Munich Park) was a typical business man's hotel, but walking distance to a bier garden, and restaurants. We would definitely take another river cruise. Read Less

We have been ocean cruising for years and wanted to visit inland countries and cities. This cruise offered us the opportunity to visit both large cities and small villages. We also took advantage of a post cruise 3 day visit to Prague. Transfers were handled expeditiously on arrival and during the post trip excursion. Only issue that arose was result of Delta computer snafu. Viking rep at our Hotel insisted we go to airport when we knew from experience that there would be no earlier departure than the one we booked. We were left at the hotel and took advantage of another day in Prague. When we went to the airport our fellow travelers were there disgruntled after having spent the day in an airport. The ship was immaculate, the service impeccable and the food delicious. River cruising is a much more intimate experience than Ocean cruising and we made some good friends. We missed evening entertainment although there was a piano player and dancing. On a few evenings entertainment was brought on the ship. As a result of high water levels locks were backed up so we missed the excursion to Salzburg that we most looked forward to. Our tour guides on most excursions were well informed, energetic and sometimes entertaining. Our cabin was smaller than expected and we are not large people. Staff on the ship were friendliest we have experienced on any cruise. Overall, it was a great experience and a memorable trip. We are looking at cruising with Viking again on one of their China itineraries. Read Less

We chose this cruise upon the recommendation of several friends that have previously cruise Viking. I will list the pros and cons for our 15 day journey below: Pros: 1. We were very pleased with the personal service provided by our Cruise Director, Rob and our Concierge, Tamara. 2. Most of the remaining Ingvi staff were friendly, hard working and appeared to really enjoy their day to day work. 3. Our Chef was amazing and the food exceptional! 4. Our sailing in April was a very good choice as the water level of the Danube, Main and Rhine were high so a ship swap was not necessary. 5. As the Viking Ships are small we established some close friendships as a result of our cruise. 6. Our daily stops were excellent and our included tours very interesting. 7. Our Cruise Director and Concierge accompanied us on the shore excursions even in inclement weather. 8. The included wine with Lunch and Dinner was enjoyed by all. 9. Our German theme night was truly fun! Staff dressed in German attire and exceptional German food delicious. 10. We did a 3 day pre-cruise extension in Prague that was truly amazing! Cons: 1. We did have our top balcony closed down for five days due to low bridges as a result of the high water level. 2. Our bedding was not changed for the entire 15 day journey. Not sure whether this was just our cabin or routine for the cruise line. 3. We went through 68 locks on this transit. At first the entry and exit of locks was interesting but near the end of our journey they were a great deal less so! 4. Our evening entertainment on most nights was a piano player. Unfortunately his accompanying vocals were those of a poor Karaoke singer so we did not spend time in the lounge after Dinner. All in all, we will definitely consider Viking for future travels. We enjoyed the cruise immensely. There was one major thing that we should have payed more attention to. First we had a great time in Budapest , our embarkation point; however, we spent maybe a couple of hours in Amsterdam, our destination port (at the airport). To do over we would have stayed a day or two in Amsterdam (and not part of the extended tour). The cruise itself was great. Good food and excellent service by both the cabin attendants and the wait staff. Some of the land tours were a stretch--seemed like the tour guide was wasting time; but overall they rated very good. Take advantage of some of the optional tours-- The Hungarian Horseman, Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, the Mozart Concert, Rothenburg ob der Tauber (a must see) and the BMW factory are all worth the extra money. We started our cruise with 3 days in Prague, organized by Viking. They had a desk manned 12-13hrs a day at the wonderful hotel they booked us into. They were very helpful getting our British Airways lost luggage back to us. We had a newer, clean bus to take us from Prague to Budapest, where the river cruise started. The Viking cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam was fantastic. The ships were almost brand new, the crew and the meals were wonderful. Through no fault of Viking we had to swap ships halfway along the route, as the water level was too low in a stretch of the Rhine/Main canal for the ship to navigate. A sister ship was coming the opposite way from Amsterdam, so they took a bus ride from their ship and we took a 3hr bus ride to their ship. Luggage was all handled and the new ship was exactly like the one we had just left. The local guides at each port were fantastic and very knowledgeable of their area. Meals on and off the ship were excellent and tours were arranged to accommodate almost all levels of fitness. Embarkation and Disembarkation were as painless as these two activities can be. Only two words of caution. If you are used to large ocean type cruises you will need to get your head around the idea that this will be a totally great but very different experience. The river ships are smaller and do have the amenities and staff of larger ocean ships. Also we do not think the cost of upgrading to a full balcony on the small ship is worth it. Many times we docked we were 2-3 ships deep and the only thing you saw outside your balcony was another balcony. Read Less

Booked this cruise 1 1/2 yrs before taking it. We did a pre-cruise 3 days in Prague thru Viking and it was wonderful. Fantastic Viking staff right in the hotel where we stayed - Hilton Prague. The hotel was within walking distance of the old town (a must see) and was great. The transfer to Budapest from Prague was well organized and was on new Viking bus. We sailed first on the Viking Alsvin and then the Viking Ingvi, identical sister ships. The staff and service on both ships was great and the food was 5 star all the way. The excursions at every port we stopped at were very well organized and the local guides conducting the shore tours were very informative and very professional and range from a university student to a retired German military officer. The cabins were small, but then again are river cruise ships. They were well appointed and the cabin staff did a wonderful job. Not much to say about Embarkation or Disembarkation except they were as painless as this process of getting on and off the ship can be. A words of caution. If you are used to Ocean Cruising you will have to get your head around the fact that this is a totally different experience. The ships just do not have the size to have all the amenities found on ocean ships. There is a smaller staff, no pools or hot tubs and no large theatre productions. However the ability to see all the wonderful sights along the way is great value for the money. Also because this is a river and not the ocean the ships are far more susceptible to changing river levels. We need to swap ship half thru our cruise because there was a section of the Rhine/Main canal that did not have enough water to allow any ships to pass. Viking also did a wonderful job of this transfer between ships almost painless. Viking made some compensation thru an open bar and made some optional cost shore excursions free. However be aware that changing water levels, either too high or too low may affect the transportation mode you will actually use for your trip. Read Less

This is our 2nd cruise with Viking. Our 1st cruise was in Russia in July 2014, which we loved immensely. No wonder, we booked our 2nd trip with Viking. We loved the itinerary, the land excursions, the food, the hospitality. Howver, there were certain pitfalls: in our 2nd day in Buda, we were horrified to return to our meeting point to see the bus was leaving. Our local guide did not do a head count. We list our way, trying to take a short cut and was 5 mins late! This has never ever happened to us! We had to take a taxi back yo the boat! We were never told that the bus cannot wait! The ship was Ingvi. We sailed along the Danube, Main and Rhine into Amsterdam. In Vienna, in the tour of Schonnbrunn Palace, the Guide told a time to meet in front of the ticket gate. Thank god I was listening in the quiet box. He started the tour 5 mins early. We had to run to meet him. That was done again, without doing a headcount to make sure everyone was present. In Passau, we were informed of the low water level in Danube and had to change ship in Regensburg and boarded Alsvin. I hate to say: but the food and service was much better! In Ingvi: there was a limited choice of dinner for my wife. she is not fond of Steak, veal, pork or salmon! Unfortunately, the fish she took smelled a little. She was unable to eat her main meal. Same thing happened in Russia River cruise, the waiter was very nice and got something which she was able to eat. We were shocked to hear from the waiter that " He cannot do anything. Have some dessert". We thought that was most inconsiderate and unprofessional! That was the waiter in Ingvi. In contrast, the waiters and waitresses in Alsvin were nicer, friendlier and more courteous! Read Less

We heard about this cruise from our travel agent when we asked about Danube cruises. The trip far exceeded our expectations in every way. The crew was friendly, helpful, skilled and talented. The food was served beautifully. The choices were always plentiful and I appreciated the size of portions- enough but not too much. Coffee of all kinds, tea and pastries are always available. The excursions were led by locals who knew their business. I do a lot of reading and research before traveling and the tours were great. Be aware that the staterooms are small but they contain lots of storage- plenty for two people. Also be careful to ask about the activity level of the tour- they usually offer two levels with the leisurely one having fewer steps and hills. Our cruise had a lady with a walker ( in her 80s) who did everything at the leisurely level. Read Less

For us, food service is acceptable. We traveled with a picky eater which made dinners on board a problem some times. Breakfast was the best meal of the day because of the custom make eggs each morning. We traveled to Budapest for seven-days. Having been on two previous Viking cruises (one river, one ocean), we knew the high standards we could expect from Viking. We traveled with another couple and had adjacent rooms near the front of the boat. Our rooms were comfortable and our balcony provided a lovely vantage point from which to watch the scenic villages on warm cruising days. Our room was kept clean and tidied up during the day. Loved the cappuccino machine (and visited it often), and meals were always delicious. Tours were always well organized and informative. I liked the freedom to roam our port villages whenever we were docked, especially when others in our group preferred to stay on the river boat. Port talks were informative In planning the next day's activities. Entertainment was varied and indicative of the areas we were visiting. Traveling with Viking is always a pleasure. It was recommended by several friends that had already taken it. It was important for us that it was a small cruise oriented to more mature people, navigated on a river, offered excursions in every Port, and everything was practically included. It was easy making reservations and getting more detailed information from the very professional travel agent from Viking. The ship was elegantly set, with many inviting seating arrangements, an upper Deck geared to socialize. Our suit Veranda AA was so comfortable with all the necessary amenities, and a lovely balcony. Dinning was compared to a five stars restaurant, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, the food was incredibly exquisite. The attention of the staff was also beyond expectations, not only they learned all our names, but they had a genuine smile on their faces at all times, and were so attentive and gracious. The entertainment after dinner was lovely and so much fun. We went with one of our daughters and son in law, in spite of being the youngest ones on the trip they also had a terrific time. The cities in the different countries visited, and the excursions on very comfortable buses, were a phenomenal cultured experience, completed by the expertise of the tour guides. Viking made the whole trip from beginning to end smoothly, enjoyable, and unforgettable. We are looking forward the next one. Read Less

We booked a veranda suite and couldnt be happier. I was traveling with my widowed aunt, so having a living room, a balcony, and separate bedroom made this trip much more pleasurable. Booking a suite comes with nice perks, fresh fruit delivered, some beer and wine with meals, laundry service. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. The dining option were fantastic, and we got to sit where and with whom we wanted, The service was amazing in all factions of the cruise. The free excursions at each port were great with great guides, except for the bath option in Budapest, that guide was not well planned and wasted our time visiting the baths. I have now booked to try a Viking Ocean cruise next year. Read Less

We had wanted to do a small river cruise for such a long time. Our friends were thinking the same thing, so we sealed the deal when free air and shipboard credit was offered to sail the Rhine. We all had ocean cruised, but the Viking river cruise is rated at the top of our experiences. Our rooms were perfect, housekeeping friendly and efficient. I can’t rave wildly enough about the regional cuisine and dining! The staff was amazing and could make anything happen. Our activity director, Emily, could not have been any more knowledgeable and friendly, a wealth of information. We added days in Amsterdam and were so sorry that we didn’t add them for Switzerland too, Every excursion we took, both the included and optional, we wonderfully coordinated, the guides had excellent English, and added so much to our days. There is no doubt that we will take another Viking trip! Read Less

We enjoyed this cruise with my parents, celebrating a milestone anniversary with them. It exceeded all of our expectations! From the friendliness of the staff, to the wonderful meals, to the fantastic excursions, to the cabin we stayed in...everything was top notch! The servers, stewards & bartenders quickly learned our names & our preferences. We went on each of the daily excursions, as well as two of the optional ones & enjoyed each one - not to be missed! The tour guides were so knowledgeable! The cruise director talks each night describing the next day's events was very helpful. Our absolute favorite day was the day on the boat that we sailed past all the castles & churches - history coming to life! There were so many choices at all of the mealtimes, both in types of food & where to dine. Evening entertainment was fun - we enjoyed the music trivia night. The ship, rooms & dining areas were all very clean. Our trip was delayed by weather so we missed the first day of the cruise & once we caught up to the boat, the staff went above & beyond to welcome us & help us get settled in. Would highly recommend Viking & will certainly be traveling with them again!! Read Less

We had been wanting to do a European river cruise for quite a few years. We had been receiving Viking literature and finally decided to book a trip. We added on a Lucerne pre-excursion. It was a great way to get to Europe early to explore and get accustomed to the time zone difference. Viking was spot on with all the details. All their t's were crossed and their i's were dotted. We felt like royalty from the moment we got off the plane. The ship was wonderful and had all the amenities one would need. Our cabin was a comfortable retreat at the end of a long day of exploring. And the deck was a bonus for relaxing in the evening or watching the beautiful countryside go by while sailing. The tours throughout the cruise were top notch. The free tours were just as fabulous as the paid tours. The food on the ship was fabulous in both the dining room and the Aquavit. Their customer service was wonderful and top notch. As an example, while we sailed through the Rhine Gorge, it was a cool, crisp morning; they came around with blankets and hot cocoa (with a little extra "warmth" to add, if desired). The staff was amazing and most remembered our names by Day 2. They were always smiling and very attentive. We would do another Viking cruise in a heartbeat. Thanks Viking for making our dream come true!! Read Less

We lived in Germany for 5 years and decided to revisit some of our favorite places. This Viking cruise, our first, seemed a great way to go and it was. We flew into Basel and Viking met us and transferred us to our ship with ease. Luggage quickly delivered to cabin. Lunch was immediately available. We loved the daily excursions and walked between 6 and 9 miles per day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner service were excellent. Because of the many options for food, we were able to eat like kings and queens and yet get home without gaining any weight. Wine and beer included with lunch and dinner at no additional cost. Leaving the ship was super easy. Bags put into hall and when we got to the end of the pier, our bags were sorted by cabin number and staff immediately found and loaded into our transportation. We did a 3 day extension in Amsterdam and when we were ready to leave, Viking arranged for a car to take us to the airport. Great trip. Read Less
