Well, this is my 5th cruise, and 2nd time sailing Holland America and believe it or not, my second time on Ms Rotterdam. I had my first ever cruise with her and I loved it and had fond memories of the ship, however this time not so much. I’ll try to just stick with the basics and facts. First, the cleanliness of our cabin was horrendous. One of the first things we had to do upon getting into our cabin was pee, and that’s where I noticed blood on the shower walls from my view whilst on the leu. After that, I entered the main cabin and lamented to my gf there was blood on the shower / tub from the previous guests and that’s where I noticed stained walls from what looked like dried Coke that had sprayed all over the walls behind the couch. And I mean all over, like how could you miss that cleaning crew. So we called to have our room cleaned and that led to a whole other incident where we were locked out of our cabin for 3 hrs. mind you we just got there, wanted to shower and change after a 10 hr flight. So it was not ideal right off the bat. The staff was very laid back about everything, and not in a good way. No hustle to get us situated (that will also come up later) During the process having to walk back and forth over 10 times to the front desk - to see if this key worked and if that key worked they finally resorted to call a locksmith that leasurley came 3 hrs later. Our toilets backed up daily and our room smelled like poop well because there was poop floating in our toilets that wouldn’t flush. At the first port I went to buy some Lysol wipes and wiped the cabin down myself. Being grossed out from everything upon arrival. The blackness that came off everything was nauseating: the phone, the switches, door handles, all black and filthy. I was trying to be a good sport and not complain bc it was my girlfriends first cruise and I wanted her to have a good time. But it just continued to disappoint. The food was not great. Everything was heavy, fried and very salty. The staff in the lido deck didn’t really interact with you and didn’t listen to any requests. Like go light with the salad dressing, they would drench the salad anyway and hand it over miffed and just want to move on to the next person. Customer service in all the food areas were bad, staff had a bad attitude and pretty much just lazy. they had lines at certain stations for 20 minutes or longer, when they had plenty of staff and should have made adjustments for the busier stations, like open another omlet section or salad station. So when having dinner with your companion that ate something different than you, they would be done with their meal by the time you got yours. Never saw any food managers, either. The only thing healthy was the salad bar and the lettuce was often the “last day of lettuce” if you know what I mean. So cleanliness- very poor, food not great, staff - pretty over it and other things like the internet package is 100 bucks for 5 days, but they don’t tell you the internet doesn’t work if you’re in the fjords (that happened to be about 24 hrs or more) and your guest in the cabin has to buy their own internet so it goes by person - definitely felt ripped off that - and when I told them they should have a disclaimer when buying the internet that it wouldn’t work docked in the fjord, she just looked at me like I was speaking another language and had this expression like “oh well” and didn’t do or say anything else. So. Customer service also pretty bad. All in all I was very disappointed with the “management” of the ship. The last thing they messed up was our debark- we didn’t receive luggage tags and had to get them from the long line at guest services. Then they were late delivering our luggage to the luggage drop off center and it caused us to miss our transport bus, that we had to now wait for another bus that in turn had us RUNNING to catch our flight. We debarked the ship at 7:45 am and had a 8:30 am bus, but had to take the 10:30 am bus. So while we waited and waited- we watched the luggage handlers just take their time like no one had anything else to do that day. Very disorganized and very over their “jobs”. New management and new crew ASAP. The ship itself had a lot of cool artwork, and I liked the “antique” vibe - but that’s the best thing I can say about the ship itself and Holland America. There were just a handful of delightful people that do work there with a smile on their face but it kinda sucks the 95% of the bad staff was so bad that those 5% don’t really get the review. We chose this cruise for the itinerary. As always when we cruise with HAL we found the staff to be helpful, friendly and very hard working. Perhaps it's us but we have certain expectations in regards to a ship. This one was clean and comfortable, but it was evident that it needs work. Many windows were cracked and there were leaks along many of them. We heard of plumbing leaks in certain staterooms, as well as seen leaks in the Lido and the Crow's Nest lounge. Our itinerary needed to be changed because there were too many icebergs in Prins Christian Sund as well as in one of the ports of call, which was fine with us since safety should come first. The Captain was great in finding us alternatives. As always the food was plentiful and of very good quality in the Lido as well as the dining room. We went to the Pinnacle Grill on three separate occasions and the food was spectacular each time. My husband and I rarely eat beef, but the filet mignon at the Pinnacle Grill was astounding. On board they had many talks about the ports of call and the areas in general. The ones we attended were very good. However, we found there were few other activities on board. Read Less

WE loved the 30 day itinerary on this cruise , both the Mediterranean and the Baltic . Ship is very nice, smaller by today's standards but delightful. Older but still a great ship . Holland America staff was fantastic this was was our 16th cruise and some of the best service I have seen . We had a Vista Cabin that was perfect for our needs . Nice Balcony , table for room service and a nice bathroom . Room steward was perfection , always well maintained. Plenty of storage especial for a long cruise . While we were very busy with excursions the entertainment was always good . Dancers and shows very good . Had an excellent Irish comedian who was very funny . Bars were well staffed and we made good use of our drink package . Service was cheerful and fast . As for dinning, the dinning room was lovely and well appointed . Service was fantastic our waiter was spot on every night . Evan anticipating our needs . The menu for me was very strongly Dutch influenced . The did always have a steak and salad. . Some nights it was such a mixture of Dutch and Indonesian that I made a dinner of appetizers . The second half of the Cruise had a very large percentage of Dutch and that perhaps reflected the food choices . It was not what I remember from past Holland Cruises . Having said that I would still jump on any chance to sail on Holland America. Read Less

The Rotterdam is an older ship and does show some wear especially in the bathtubs and the décor in some of the areas. However, once you experience the friendly and helpful staff, the great food and the awesome atmosphere you quickly forget the age of the ship. Embarkation was a bit rough in that requested wheelchair was not available and had to wait in the chilly air outside until it arrived. Wheel chair also had to be requested upon disembarkation. Our balcony cabin was fairly spacious, in fair condition and was always kept clean and well stocked by cabin staff. We did not participate in most ship activities and the entertainment did not seem to suit us but there were plenty of activities if you wanted to be more active. The ports of call were amazing and included Eidfjord, Geiranger, Alesund, and Bergen. We did not purchase any shore excursions and did the ports on our own and had a great time; a bit of walking and HOP ON/HOP OFF buses. We absolutely loved the laid back atmosphere of the ship and we were extremely pleased with the phenomenal service we were provided. We cannot wait to go back! Read Less

My partner and I are in our early 30s and this was our second cruise. Our first was with Royal Caribbean to the South Pacific. We chose Holland America expecting a better experience considering the price difference was substantial (almost double compared to Royal Caribbean). Unfortunately we were disappointed across the board. Food: The food was actually very bad across the board, from in room dining, to the formal dining room, to the buffet restaurant. If food had been perhaps average, it would have improved our perception of the cruise overall, however 3 weeks of meat so hard it crunched when pierced with the fork ( beef bourguignon!!), exactly the same options for breakfast and almost tasteless lunch options really impacted our experience. Comparing the food to our Royal Caribbean experience where you could order practically anything as room service (Holland America had a very limited room service menu), had dessert buffets after dinner and awesome BBQs by the pool with ribs that melted off the bone, we were grossly disappointed. The specialty restaurant at $29/person was pretty good, the steaks were actually edible, but it was a bit expensive, we ended up going 4 times because we couldn't stand the food elsewhere in the boat. Room: We initially had a balcony room on level 7, highest level with accommodation. It was directly below the smoking area where other guests would drag chairs and tables every 5-10minutes as they were sitting and standing up. Each time this happened the dragging echoed in our room like someone dragging nails on a chalkboard. It was unbearable. By day 3 of our trip, having been kept awake till midnight by dragging chairs, we requested to be moved. The staff were very obliging and at the end of the first week we moved to level 6 in a blissfully quiet room. The second room however was not refurbished to the same standard as that on level 7! The bathroom was visibly tired with the bathtub chipped in a number of spots and the door jamb scratched to the point where there was almost more metal showing than paint! Lastly our toilet was leaking, filling up the bowl and eventually, given time, overflowing and filling the bathroom floor with water. We alerted room service, the front desk, and guest services 5 times all up, nothing was done and our bathroom continued flooding on almost a nightly basis. Perhaps the worst part was forgetting that the toilet was filling up and getting up in the middle of the night and sitting on the toilet only to impact the body of water inside... Very unpleasant!! Onboard Activities: Very scant. Other than music after 5pm there was very little to do on board. The best thing was the art lectures hosted by the Art Auctioneer who was delightful and incredibly knowledgable. Evening performances were largely lacklustre. Service: The only area that I can say something wholeheartedly positive about is the service by the crew. Everyone was very accomodating and polite, with a smile on their face. Most of the crew is either Philipino or from the Indian subcontinent and Service was really their middle name :) Locations: As far as the destination is concerned, we felt Choosing to cruise around Iceland was a good option as you see a lot of the island and don't feel like there is much you missed. Norway felt a little rushed and we probably will be back in Norway to cover what we missed. Overall: On the whole we found the experience very disappointing. The ship itself was pretty average with no 'WOW' factor. Coupled with the terrible food and the unfortunate room incidents we are unlikely to ever cruise with Holland America again. Next on the list to try, Princess Cruises! Read Less

We were told that we would not be sailing from Amsterdam due to a congested harbor, we sailed from Rotterdam. We were met at the airport by a very nice young man from Viking and put aboard a bus to Rotterdam. We were the only ones on the bus. This change was no problem. We were also told several days ahead that the water level on the Danube was low, not the fault of Viking and we might have to change boats with a Viking boat that could not get down river. This we did and our tour director came with us. We packed before a shore trip and our bags were in our room on the new boat when we arrived. Viking even went so far as to give us the same room number, do not remember the name of the new boat The same problem faced us below Budapest so Viking took us to Budapest on a tour bus.To make up for the inconvence we were taken to lunch at the four star Gundel Restaurant . The food was out of this world and the chocolate crape, WOW. Viking did every thing they could to make our trip great. The service on the boats was great and also the food. We learned to make a strudel on the second boat. I have made it twice sense we have been home. All in all we had a great time and could not have been more pleased. All the shore trips we took were fun and we learned a great deal about that part of the world. I am a WW2 student and the WW2 trip to Nuremberg to the Zepplin field and the Court House where the War Trials took place, took care of two items on my bucket list. The highlight of the trip was the concert in Vienna. This was another item off my bucket list to hear the BLUE DANUBE WALTZ played in Vienna. You need to schedule 2 days there please. Great trip. Ready to schedule our third one. Read Less

My wife and I renamed the ship: "Sorrydam." Second HAL cruise, last was the Ryandam, was five start service expected the same on the Rotterdam...let me tell you, it is not the line but ship culture that make it all worth while. Too many sanfus to list... We had Cabin 1882, the air was off at check in, room was very hot, very hot, 3 days and several phone calls...before someone from fornt desk came with a electronic themometer...to confirm we were telling the truth...very hot. The maintenance man came and stood on our chair, with his dirty shoes on and removed the vent cover. He found AC was completely turned off and open it up full. Now it cooled good, but my wife develped cough that lasted for two weeks, I got an URI, that required $200 visit to your ship doctor. I complained to front desk sup, Jo Jo Santos, no action. Wrote 2 page letter to the Captain, no acknowledgement to date...been almost 2 months. Then I wrote email to Seattle Hqs...next thing hammering and sawing and and all behind the walls... problems cleared up. I asked the Captain in my 8 point letter..did Holland ever do study, see if certain cabins had more people go on sick calls or not. As above, no reply to date. "Sorrydam." All we got were sorriest no action. First day my wife was discriminated against in the Lido,by both the staff and the supervisor, Eddie. My wife is Asian. She asked them for some "Fish Sauce" before I arrived and was not told not available. I asked Eddie for it and told same staff person who told her no, to go get it. No one helps you there, if you are in wheel chair either. if you need one for a week, but rent for the whole cruise, at about $30 a day we were told, wife got inflamed tendon...we purchased a chair next stop for 125.00 US. Most all the experienced passengers, Engalnd, Australian, Asian and US....had complaints. My wife and I, had dozens and dozens and dozens of complaints about this ship, the front desk and many others. Now we found and rewarded a few good people on the staff...Tammy Lido part-time supervisor and dinning room seating officer..we tipped him. Marlon and Michelle, drink servers...hard workers, and always smiing and called us by name...we tipped them too. Anton and Muchlafin, our stateroom guys, were the best...we tipped them well too...(32 staterooms...are you seriouus). Tim Hutchinson, sup at casino, made me feel good about losing $4,415.00...nice guy and good host. Eddie the "bar drinks" guy near the casino...big money maker for HAL, I am stock-holder. George the singer was varied and talented. The Sorrydam band was unreal...first class, supporting any and all entertainers. The Lido Turkey burger crew...excellent. The the libarary lady and computer guy...really action people...not sorry people like the fornt desk. John on front desk, was super in action getting our delayed luggage for us and providing some temp benefits, free l laundry for 4 days and some Ts for the wife. ..only one one front desk worthy. The front desk staff messed up my tip wrtten request and when I asked for a copy to show them, waited two to three weeks and then was told they lost it. Then there were broken pipes and resulting bad smells on our deck from time to time. Dirty brown water from time to time as they worked on the system and shutdowns. I would give Holland another chance on another ship...but my wife said never again for her. After about 30 days, my wife lost it and read the riot act the food room service guy, 51 days the order was never perfect...no matter if I wrote out tag for the door or called it in. 51 days and about 29 ports... HAL did get us safely threw the Suez and Aden Sea and all.   Read Less
