This was our 3rd cruise with Viking. All three experiences were A-1, Top Shelf, Some additiona busing on one,but we still had a fabulous time. The staff on our most recent cruise was particularly enjoyable. Mario the cruise director was knowledgeable and always ready to assist and answer any questions. The two game nights were especially entertaining. The wait staff in the dining room, were beyond delightful. Carman, one of the dining room captains, along with Chip, were a delight to be with, and they took the extra time to assure we had everything we needed. The staff in the lounge, led by head bartender Armando, and his trusty, knowledgeable duo of Robert and Matej, made sure whatever drink we desired was prepared, and prepared properly. The Chef and his staff always had a great menu planned, whether breakfast, lunch or dinner. My all time favorite, from a cruise in 2012, is the oatmeal. don't know how, but I've never tasted anything quite like it. In closing, Viking River Cruises, delivers a quality product.if you haven't been on one of their cruises, you should, you won't be diappointed. I'll be booking my next cruise later next year and can't wait to see the next adventure. Read Less

My husband & I choose this cruise because of the 2-for-1 price including airfare! We felt very catered to for the whole trip! The veranda suite was comfortable and posh. A bottle of sparking wine upon our arrival and, fresh fruit and beverages stocked everyday! We only participated in a couple of the evening festivities in the lounge. Instead enjoyed cozying up in our stateroom with movies that we thoroughly enjoyed. We spent 4 days on the Jarl. Then because of drought conditions the Danube had low spots. We were bused to the Alta further on down river. Then spent 2 more days cruising until the next low spot! Had to be bused into Budapest. But Viking handled EVERYTHING! Extra night at the hotel, transferring our luggage, etc. The staff on both ships were fantastic! Mario was our program director and was excellent at his job which was made complex due to the dought! We took advantage of the included tours at each port of call. They were great! And not to be missed! Great tour guides and you had a radio with an earphone for the tours. This was good so you didn't need to be right up near the leader and could stand back and take in the sites. We ate primarily on the Aquavit Deck to enjoy the views and fresh air. Every night I had the regional special and was NOT disappointed! Breakfasts and some dinners we ate in the lower dining room and were delighted by the friendly servers. It was sad to leave. Think next time a longer cruise! Read Less

We wanted to cruise on a river in Europe. People told us that Viking was the best, and they were right! The entire ship was always very clean and neat. The staff was very accommodating. I have a food allergy and they worked with me to make sure my meals were prepared according to my needs. The tour guides were extremely informative and friendly. We really liked our experiences ashore. Meals on board were great with lots of variety especially the local selections. The relaxed and informal atmosphere on board allowed us to make numerous acquaintances and friendships. The entire experience seemed very well organized and geared toward making things easier for senior citizens, as well as those with handicaps. We celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary on the ship and the staff graciously helped us make the event memorable with cake, champagne, and song. The music program and special events in the evenings were very enjoyable. We got the impression that Viking partnered with local historic and scenic organizations to help make the tours especially enjoyable and fruitful. At the end of the tour, we elected to add on the trip to Prague. This was very well organized and seamless. We LOVED Prague. Upon return, we found our friends quite curious in our experiences. We hope to take another Viking cruise on a different river in the future. Read Less

Itinerary was perfect. The staff outstanding and food wonderful. We were especially pleased with the extra personal attention the staff provided. Also the walking tours provided a nice option with a slower pace for those with mobility problems. The private tour of the bridge by the captain was delightful! The ventilation systems in our suite were outstanding, allowing us extreme comfort no matter what the weather conditions were. The boarding and disembarkment procedures were very well planned and efficient. We always had an extra hand with luggage whenever we needed it. We found the on board library to have a nice collection of options for reading during quiet times. The cruise director was outstanding and provided extensive background on each port we were to visit. The table waiters were extremely attentive to any requests and often remembered our preferences if we were seated in their areas again. Overall an outstanding experience!! Read Less

Viking Cruises came highly recommended to me by my friends in several different groups, so it was easy to select the Danube River cruise with my companion. The recommendation was warranted! Two things impressed me right off, Viking's attention to detail right down to the small stuff (like good design of cabins, things many guests might not even notice) and Viking's corporate culture, always welcoming and accommodating. It was great to have staff address me by name by the second or third day. Impressive! I especially appreciated the open table seating at meals, as it was a great opportunity to meet new guests every time we sat down for meals. And a little humble humor here, no other guest was "stuck" with me for a whole week! Viking River Cruises are a great way to travel with little worry about arrangements. From arrival greeting (at the airport and longboat), to shore excursions at each port, to not having to pack and unpack along the way, to Viking staff confirming my return air travel and providing easy transfer to my departing airport. On this trip, my favorite port was Passau, Germany. Just the right size bowl of porridge, not too big and not too small, to explore more in depth. An opportunity to self tour for a little deeper cultural immersion should one make the effort as I choose to do when I travel. I also enjoyed my extension in Prague, Czech Republic. Yes, I took the panoramic tour to familiarize myself, though my greatest pleasure was going off-line by myself, away from the crowds, the shops and the more touristy spots to engage with citizens of the Czech Republic on a deeper level. Amazing what you can discover this way! I'll not hesitate to recommend Viking River Cruises to all my friends whenever cruising comes up in conversation. Thanks, Viking. Read Less

the Ship was surprising in the layout, design and function; and the staff hands above those on the big cruise ships. The people make all the difference. The majority of the excursions where better then we had expected and several last minute opportunities turned out to be the HIGHLIGHT of all of them. The palace tour was way too hot and crowded in Vienna, and we skipped the Abby tour entirely because we simply were too tired to get off the boat. Traveling through the locks was amazing even for someone like me that works in maintenance facilities of a large power station. Their staff is beyond professional, they have dedication almost to a fault. the entertainment OFF ship and brought on board the ship (2 separate times) was likewise excellent, the family horse farm in Bavaria for the Biergarten were delightful - hell everyone on was. The pianist that provided the daily and evening entertainment was enjoyable but they could use a different schedule for each night; hearing the same tunes in the exact same order got to be somewhat laughable. The food was simply fantastic, and the service spot on. the only down side was the packaged air travel arrangements - they have no flexibility and they notify you far to late for you o make any effective changes. I use Delta almost exclusively for the air miles, yet they put me on swiss air, while our friends were put on Delta - when asked about changing even the seats we were simply told to take it up with the airline - which at the 6 week mark was sold out solid and we were basically told too bad. with those 2 exceptions - it was possibly the best vacation we have had.... Absolutely Amazing once again!!! This was my second river cruise and second time on the Viking Jarl. The ENTIRE crew on the Jarl are what helped make this another trip of a lifetime. Their commitment to customer service is outstanding. Everything from the embarkment, dining, onboard activities, lounge, rooms, service and excursions were top notch. I had a couple days in a hotel in Budapest prior to embarkment and a day in a hotel in Bucharest after disembarkment. Everything was handled beautifully regarding airport pickup and transfers and the hotels were lovely. I highly recommend this amazing itinerary to those who want to see what the rest of Eastern Europe is like further down the Danube. FIVE COUNTRIES - Beautiful landscapes and amazing people. For those who are looking for castles and grandeur won't see the typical European display but there are so many other wonderful sights and sounds to see. The Iron Gate is breathtaking!! Lots of handcrafts, folk, and history will delight you on this trip. Read Less

Our hotel was giro and the views at night were spectacular. Buds and Pest are beautiful cities. We had been here before but this was a special Tagore us. We extended our trip by adding a few days in Prague and we were so happy we did. What a spectacular city and the history was fancy. Our day trips there had knowledgeable guides, spectacular sites, and educational opportunities. Old town was a great place to shop and soak in the Stu. A highlight was a visit to the Mucha Museym. This was our third river cruise with Viking. This was the one that best fit our schedule this year and we had not been to Eastern Europe before. The crew was top notch as always. Seemed to care for us even better than our last trip. Small bloody Mary’s and mimosas while on deck passing through natural beauty. Light appetizers in the lounge during happy hour. Wine and beer with lunch and dinner are welcome. Love the fact that it is a small ship and immerses you in the culture of the places you visit. Also like the fact that excursions are included at each stop. Optional tours are available at some stops. We did take the optional tour of Belfast which included a visit to a winery. We enjoyed the visits through the different countries and especially seeing how the different countries are in different stages of emerging from communism. It was also interesting to see the contrast in cleanliness as we traveled from Romania to Hungary. Read Less

River cruising is much different than ocean cruises. You get to know most of the crew and see the same passengers every day. You can have lengthy conversations and learn more about others on the ship. Because you are in the heart of the countries, not just along the coast, you learn much more about the culture of the country. The shore excursion tours are much more personal and you are told to interact with the guides and ask the “hard questions”. We thought the food was excellent. Generally the menus met or exceeded those I had experienced on ocean cruises. No fitness equipment on these vessels but they do have a walking track on the upper deck. What we really enjoyed was the sea time, because you are always in sight of land, passing by smaller cities, castles, churches and transiting 25 Locks just from Nuremberg to Budapest, as well as passing over a water bridge. Truly amazing scenery! Read Less

Took my family on their first river cruise and visited all the Christmas markets we could. AWESOME cruise in all respects except the weather ( It was very cold ) The cruise staff was excellant especially the Cruise Director. Excellant tour guides that actualy knew the area. The ship was very well layed out and it took all of ten minutes to find things. The cabin we had was very well done with two seperate rooms. That was great because One could go to bed, close the door while the other watched some TV or just read. Cabin had a big bathroom off the bedroom with a great shower. Rare on a boat/ship. Fridg was restocked every day. Room steward was right there any time we needed him and had the cabin redone before we got back from breakfast. He also had the bed turned down every evening by the time we got back to the cabin. The dining room was well done with different tables, anywhere from 2 to 8 people per table. There was an excellant dining staff that immediatly knew our names and remembered what we liked for drinks or salads and things like that. They were impressive. There was always a varied menu for dinner and what you ordered was ALWAYS well prepaired and presented. If you didn’t like one of the specials, the menu always had what I call standard fare you could order. The wine list was very well done as well and I would recommend buying the prepaid drinks because the selection was better than some high end places I have been to. Some of the dining stall worked in the bar area as well as the dining room and knew what we wanted as soon as we sat down. Again, very impressive. Would I sail with Viking again??? Absolutly. In fact we are looking at both river cruies and their ship cruises. We will take another in the near future. Read Less

the reviews on Viking were the main reason we chose this route for our first European trip. Even though our trip to and fro were, to say the least, poor, Viking outdid themselves in every way possible. On the way to the ship we were approx 24 hours late due to all kinds of planes, trains and cab problems. In the end, Viking backed the ship up in the river, and picked us up at a small dock in south of Nuremberg. While they were backing up the ship to pick us up, all we could think was "who does this". The rest of the trip would be answered with Viking. From the fantastic tour guides, to the food and amazing social experiences, it truly was a trip to remember. We did several optional tours, including the carriage ride through Vienna and we have amazing pictures of all of it. Viking is not a standard cruise, but you get up each day excited about where you will be, what you will see and the stories told. Read Less

We chose this cruise because my wife always wanted to on this cruise. It was an awesome cruise with great food and awesome service. We had a junior suite and it was a great room. The wait staff at the meals were very friendly and tentative! All the ports of call had wonderful Christmas markets and we felt like we were in paradise. We would do this cruise again. This was our first river cruise and we met some wonderful people onboard and at each port of call. The embarkation was very easy and the staff were very welcoming when we came back on board. We did notice that there were no kids but mostly an older crowd which we loved. We really loved the coffee machine and the cookies that were always available anytime of day. The coffee was expresso, macchiato, mochas ect. The only thing we were kind of disappointed with was the ship could gave been more decorated for Christmas like other shipping lines. They had a couple of trees which was nice. We mostly enjoyed German night w authentic German food and 2 ompa guys who played great German tunes. Then schnapps afterwards. We thoroughly enjoyed the standard tours; they were very well done. We took the extra tour to Salzburg which was good. Although it was cold during our cruise we had a great time. We were able to use the large or the small dining room depending on how we felt. It was very relaxing. The transfers were well done as well. No issues transferring from the airport to the ship and back out. One night, my mother was ill and the staff were very helpful in assisting me with getting her food and attention. I chose this cruise after looking / shopping for a cruise for over a year. This was our first overnight river cruise but will most assuredly not be our last. The service onboard the Jarl was perfect in every way. I have never experienced anything such as this trip/tour/cruise that was as perfect as this was. The scheduling was perfect and precisely as advertised. I have never seen any this good, certainly none better. The shore excursions in each port were well done and quite interesting. The excursion guides were not only knowledgeable but very entertaining. We were impressed with the choices of sights to see and the routes taken on the tours. Most importantly, none of them were physically taxing! The food!! The only word that comes to mind is incredible!! The choices on the menus were beyond what I had expected and the chef was remarkable in that if something you wanted was not listed for a particular day, he would prepare it for you anyway!! The only thing that could possibly match the food was the service!! The service personnel in the dining room were all simply wonderful although we eventually gravitated to our "favorite" and ensured we got here service area for every meal after about the second day of "sampling" the services of all the others. I will say that due to technical difficulties our in room TV did not work very well. But, the other experiences on the ship helped to remedy that one small negative. The crew was very apologetic over this and I am reasonably confident that it was simply a glitch that could happen on any ship and certainly not the normal experience for this ship or this cruise line. Overall, this cruise was one of the most wonderful experiences we have ever had and we are already looking forward to / planning our next one! I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a relaxing, wonderful get away!! And, needless to say, I recommend Viking!! Read Less

We wanted to take in as much as possible in the ports we visited. For the most part we were able to do that except for Vienna. Roger and Jahz were fabulous. The were very attentive and knew what we needed before we did. They made the trip. Also, Neli kept our room clean and neat. We visited Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau, Germany. At each port we took the walking tour and learned the history of each city. We also too the Nuremberg Jewish tour and learned of the trials of the Nazi war criminals. In Passau we visited a horse farm and a lovely beer festival. We noticed the Viking long boats on prior trips to Hungary and Germany and thought it may be an easy way to journey without continual packing and unpacking. It certainly was much more than that. From the pre-cruise stay in Budapest and post cruise days in Prague, Viking made our journey easy and enjoyable. Airport transfers were welcoming and efficient. The Jarl staff was always attentive and gave us worthwhile suggestions along the way. Dining was superb with wonderful choices and serving portions. The house wines suited the meal offerings and were adequately poured. Our waiters Jezz and Roger quickly learned our preferences and anticipated our needs. The stateroom attendant, Donia(?) was efficient and more than helpful with some special needs. He appeared and vanished as if by magic. The local guides on our excursions spoke fabulous English and were informed on the sites we visited. Most offered their own insights on their lives growing up in Europe and in Communist Europe now democratic relating the difficulties of both eras and the transition period. There are numerous locks on the cruise. We suggest watching the entire process of the lock journey with such a long boat. One afternoon, we watched as the Jarl entered the lock and then waited as a sister ship came along side without a bump. The space between is a foot or two. Just amazing to witness. Trying to get 16 people to book a European vacation is like herding kittens...almost impossible but we did and it was incredible. Because the dates coincided with our 40th wedding anniversary, we decided to make the trip extra special by renewing our wedding vows. I wasn't able to confirm our desire to do this prior to our sail but was told to contact the hotel manager when we were on board. Joerg Grosmann went out of his was to make this occasion very special for us. They had never had this type of request and both the Captain and Mr. Grosmann participated in the ceremony. Our Maitre D', Dragan Radojcic, had the chef prepare a small wedding cake, champagne for our group, snacks and a bar were set up. They even had a beautiful wedding bouquet for me. We did not expect the details they went to and were so honored by the entire staff's thoughtfulness. Even our room attendant scattered rose petals and had a special towel arrangement. We had the best wait staff every meal and the food was exceptional. The excursions were well thought out and provided so many beautiful and historical places to visit. You can see pictures on various web sites but once you are there in person, it takes on an entirely different perspective. Every stop was enjoyable and experiencing the lock system is something you don't want to miss. Read Less

My wife and I have made many trips to Europe. Previously when we travelled, we prepared our own itinerary, made our own arrangements, carried our own luggage, etc. A few years ago, we decided to spoil our selves and took two land (bus) tours, which made things easier, but we still had to pack each night to be able to move to the next hotel on the following day. Further, we spent the good part of the day travelling from place to place. This year we decided to try a river boat cruise, and heard great things about Viking. We were not disappointed. In fact, everything about our experience exceeded our expectations. The included airfare was a bargain. The ground transportation provided on our tour of Slovenia, from Slovenia to Budapest (to start the cruise), and from Nuremberg to Prague at the end of the cruise was all first rate (note there were only 2 hotel to hotel transfers, which on a 3 week adventure is entirely tolerable). The river boat experience was incredible. It was like taking our first class hotel with us on our travels. My wife and I have food allergies that were accommodated without a problem. The food variety and preparation was excellent. All of the personnel were pleasant, helpful, and efficient. Tours and shore excursions were informative - highlighting the important with enough detail to make it interesting - even exciting, and the tour guides were very knowledgeable.
