It was the first time I went on a cruise but I am thrilled and want to go back or to a similar tour. I went ashore everywhere and enjoyed the excursions very much thanks to good guides. The atmosphere on board was very friendly and the staff did everything to make us feel at home. Lovely arrangements around Christmas with excellent dishes. Good discipline and everything went very smoothly. On embarcation everybody had to go through emergency drill, which was mandatory in every port with new passengers coming on board. After the accident with the Costa Concordia this felt very necessary, but I know this is in accordance with the regulations of all cruise ships. It is good to know where to go and where to find the rescue boats in case of emergency. Being a vegetarian I was very happy to find that the meny in the dining room Aludaria had vegetarian food every evening. Read Less

After deciding on a five day stay in Rome, we chose Costa Deliziosa due to the return route, and time of year. The boarding process was routine, however, the rest of the trip went down hill from there. For the lifeboat drill, we were told to report to three different locations by three different staff members. After walking around the ship, looking for the right place, we missed almost the entire life boat drill. A female staffer said don't worry about it. The only acceptable part of this cruise was the cabin and steward. He was very accommodating and friendly. The food was beyond terrible, with a main stay of pork. The only meal that was acceptable was breakfast. Limited coffee and tea and payment required for any extras. The food lacked quality, taste, and any form of seasoning. Limited beverages during dinner hours. Most of the shows were terrible, mostly catered to the European passengers, who many were rude and pushy. The ports were mostly mediocre at best, and it appeared that Costa was trying to save money in every manner possible. Anyone desiring to take this cruise ship needs a good session with a psychiatrist. We have taken two other Costa cruises originating in the USA which were acceptable, prior to this one. If there were any ratings listed below one, most of the categories would be listed in the "This must be a joke or a prank" section. We could not wait to get off of the cruise ship. A total waste of time and money. Read Less

This was my fourth crossing and my 20th cruise. My first time with Costa Cruise. Pros: Well laid out ship. Entertainment around the ship was excellent. The entertainment staff wanted you to have fun. They worked very hard. Drinks were very reasonable. Wine bar, Atrium bar very nice. Cabins were very nice and ship was very clean. Cons: The food was sub par. Some nights it was truly inedible. They charge for pizza and ice cream!!! No kidding. Coffee was limited. It was available at breakfast, at 4:00 and 9:00. You had to ask for coffee at dinner. The shows were sub par. Some nights were terrible. They penny pinch you at every opportunity. Do not take tour to Fez, it was a rip off. They basically took us shopping. I have been to Marrakesh and it is wonderful. Unfortunately, I will never cruise on Costa again. It was my worst cruise ever. Read Less

We selected this cruise for the itinerary. This was really the only good thing about it. From the moment we boarded, we felt as though we had been had. Never have we been on a cruise that was so terrible! EVERYTHING is extra on this ship. They do NOT offer complimentary coffee or water. They do NOT have free ice cream or pizza. Their drink packages FORCE you and your cabin-mate to take the most expensive of the packages selected. It was a disgrace. The food was hardly edible. Very salty and lack of variety. Don't even try to ask for a cup of coffee after your meal. The dining room refuses to serve coffee. They force you to go to the bar where you have to pay for it!!!! Breakfast in the dining room was a disgrace. The a la carte menu, once again, not edible. I don't know about you, but when I opt for dining room over buffet, it's because I don't want to get up and fight a crowd to have my meal. Well, guess what... It's exactly what you will have to do, even juice is not served at the table. Good luck finding a cheerful waiter to bring you a horrible cup of coffee and take your a la carte order (basically the egg dish). Anything else (fruit, pastries, juice, etc...), you have to get yourself! This ship only has 1,000 crew members for 4,000 passengers. It's no wonder they are frequently impolite and irritable. My husband came across several restaurant crew members in the bathroom and I'm sorry to say, they failed to wash their hands.... This cruise line is a disaster, and if you hold it to the standard expected of cruises, you will be disappointed. My advice: find another cruise line. Read Less

After booking this cruise, I started reading the reviews posted by Cruise Critic and I started worrying I may have made a mistake. 53% say they loved it I thought was low. So we were forewarned of possible issues with the ship. The cruise itself was great! The problem starts right from the beginning when you board, there are serious language issues and that is our fault not the cruise lines. We should have checked out their clientele, the VAST majority were Italian, Spanish, German and French. Barely a word of English was heard the whole cruise and when you're asking important information mistakes were made in conveying to us what to do. To start, there seemed to be a rush, EVERYTHING IS A RUSH..... you're on an elevator, getting off at a floor, you have these people who absolutely have to get on before you get off as if the thing will drop.... People seem to lose common decency, they barge through you shove you out of the way, respect seemed to go out the window on this cruise. The buffet restaurant was passable at best, the staff were not very helpful and for cleaning off tables so you can use it, a soiled napkin was fine,,, Not once were tables actually strayed with some cleaning solution and wiped down... I hope this is done in quiet times it certainly wasn't done during mealtime. COSTA is gonna COSTYA everything they do is to make extra money off you. We purchased a drink package but Costa did not put it on our card we had to constantly tell the staff we have a paid package, understanding that was pretty difficult it appears, the serving staff would look at us as if you;re nuts... Just to give you an example of the cheapness of this line,, THEY HAVE WARNING SIGNS NOT TO FILL WATER BOTTLES AT THE WATER Dispensers.... Can you believe that? We had an excellent waiter at the evening restaurant, he was well versed in English and was very fast and pleasant and made us feel very welcome. Same with the room person, he was very pleasant and was always asking if everything was good. He kept our room clean and fresh and it was much appreciated. The various excursions were nice, okay but for what you paid, not worth the money.... Again there was a major language issue... We actually had one excursion cancelled at the last minute since there were either not enough English speaking people OR they could not find an English speaking interpreter... Very disappointing .. We are experienced cruisers - this was our 35th or so cruise. We have sailed on RCL, NCL, Princess, Celebrity, Carnival and Costa through the years. We chose this ship due to the departure date and exotic itinerary - figured how bad could an Italian cruise be and it could be fun and lively. Well we were very wrong. This was the WORST cruise we have ever taken and our sentiments were echoed by our Norweigen and British tablemates who had cruised numerous times in the past as well. I will list Pros and Cons. PRO - Embarkation from Rome (Civitavecchia) - Exotic Itinerary (5 of the ports we had never visited including 2 cities in Morocco) - Large ship with attractive public rooms - Cabin - interior on 8th deck (only available at time of booking) was kept clean with a fridge and had enough space for both of us - Entertainment - Flamenco dancers, Cruise ship singers and dancers did a good job; White Night deck party was festive with DJ, dancers, confetti; lounge bands were lively, piano bar was busy nightly; casino was fairly busy; the ship had lots of music in various lounges in the evening and The Voice gameshow with 7 contestants which was entertaining. CONS - Embarkation fiasco - no idea we could not be dropped off w/rental car to embarkation entrance...no info provided...husband left son and I on port access road with big pieces of luggage - no bus or cab would stop to pick us up...port police intervened and forced a shuttle bus to stop and let us load our luggage under the bus (seems we should have loaded our luggage on shuttle bus in town of Civitavecchia - we had no info on this procedure. - Only approx 20 Americans on board ship of approx 2800 passengers - 70% Italian extended families; 25% mostly French & German; 5% Brits, Americans, Spanish & other - Msgs repeated in 5 languages all day long - Food was HORRIBLE!! WORST of any cruise we ever have ever taken! Buffets very limited, no real selections, same cold cuts, cheeses, breads and salads daily, same buffet choices both sides...grill outside on decks was normal fare; eggs at breakfast were only possible at the formal breakfast and were set types of eggs pre-made; formal dinner was barely edible - the menu choices were bizarre fare and not tasty - minute steaks, thinly sliced chicken breasts with no sauce, pastas with odd sauces, appetizers no one enjoyed - night after night we all felt the same....what type of menu is this - this food is unsatisfactory - we complained to guest services - we were told the menu was supposed to have been changed; dining onboard was such a huge disappointment - we dreaded our days at sea! We later found out by a fellow American traveler that all the food onboard was PREVIOUSLY FROZEN!!! She said look at the snowflakes next to every item on the dinner menu - the key says previously frozen. We realized thats why the food was soooo bad!! There was no fresh produce and no dishes being cooked onboard!!! Never heard of this policy on a cruise ship. There were NO speciality restaurants either - I guess not if they are not cooking on board the ship! - No late night buffets or special touches like a chocolate fountain or specialty food events. - Air Conditioning barely worked in our cabin - technician came twice said it was a bad, weak system in this line of cabins and close to pool deck with hot air coming in. - Pool deck extremely crowded - 3 pools and 1 slide; slide was always closed; no adult pools - all pools overrun with kids and teens - one day at sea - two of the 3 pools were closed - they claimed seas were too rough - early morning yes - a bit rough but by noon sea was very calm and pools never re-opened. - Rear deck cabins felt a terrible vibration almost nightly when the ship was traveling at 20 knots - made it hard to sleep. - The ship had a lot of movement daily - you could feel it pitching and rolling onboard - we never noticed this onboard any other ships we took and we cruised from Southhampton, England in a rainstorm in the North Sea. - Disco and late night club could not be used by adults (well, it was open to all) however, the 12-16 year olds used it nightly as a teen club occupying it until 3am - most adults would feel uncomfortable dancing in the club with 12 year olds late at night - seemed odd yet, the bar was serving liquor to whoever ordered it. We brought this to the attention of Guest Services and they said this is normal on Costa. - Crew had a private party directly above our cabin on the pool deck with a DJ - our whole cabin was shaking with the music and dancing - we complained 3 times to no avail and even went up to the party to speak to the officer - nothing was done and we were kept awake until 3 am! Other passengers went up to complain and were told sorry party is authorized. - Crew did not seem very concerned about issues or complaints - they seemed indifferent to our concerns and we were not offered any form of compensation either for a bad Costa tour experience we had with some aggressive passengers towards our daughter or the crew party till 3 am above our cabin and the lack of air conditioning every night in our cabin and our 2nd cabin....we both had barely any A/C. - We found out an American couple had chosen to opt-out of mandatory tipping - which was only possible for Americans who booked through American companies - we opted out also and tipped those deserving of tips. All in all this was a difficult cruise experience for us - my kids were bored - 19 and 24 year olds - they always meet others passengers their age on ships - there was no one in their age range....only families with small children or older couples traveling alone. Our two cabins were extremely hot every single night although turned to lowest temps. This was our 5th or 6th European cruise of over 11 nights and we NEVER experienced these negative issues or ever complained about the food on board. We will never sail with Costa Cruises again and would not recommend it for any Americans familiar with cruising. This was not up to American cruising standards. It seems to be a "no frills" operation, with many cost cutting measures in place. The most disappointing was the food and the fact that the dishes were all previously frozen. I had no idea cruise ships - which are known for their food would do this. Fortunately, some of the ports were very exotic and educational. Read Less

This cruise was a part of our honeymoon, so I spent extensive amounts of time researching and planning. I am writing this review because I found it difficult to find a straight-forward review. We loved it & would have booked sooner with more confidence if it wasn't for the cruise snobs complaining about the smallest trivial things! This is what we wanted in our cruise: 1. Clean and comfortable 2. A way to see a lot of Europe without having to re-pack our bags every day 3. Good food 4. Stopping at good ports 5. Fun activities on the cruise (although we spent most of our time on shore) And we got all of it! Here's what I was confused about even after reading all the reviews: 1. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BUY WATER. I drink a lot of water, so it sounded like you have to buy every cup. That's only if you're in one of the fancy restaurants that you have to pay extra for. There's Buffets for every meal that is included in the cruise without extra charge and all the free water you want. People seems to complain for the extra cost of water at the fancy restaurants but that's typical if you ask for bottled water at any restaurant. You can also buy bottles of water on the ship, we prepaid for 12 large 2 liter bottles for like $3 a piece. Really reasonable and we were never thirsty. 2. There's open breakfast buffet upstairs, but you can eat a nice sit down breakfast downstairs at no extra charge. You can order eggs, burritos, and any of their pre-set hot meals. I guess europeans are used to eating small breakfast (like cheese and croissants) so it wasn't crowded downstairs. Lunch buffet has pasta, pizza, salads, etc. So no extra charge to eat, only at the fancy restaurants that you need to make reservations for. Also, the ship does have a lot of Europeans, I think we only ran into a few Americans, but there was no problem communicating in English. Read Less

I'm sorry to have to write this and perhaps add to Costas problems, however I believe people should be able to make an informed decision. We went on this cruise with no prior views on the changes Costa has made in recent months. On the good side we booked directly with costa UK and got a good bargain for a premium balcony cabin. if I had paid any more I would probably be more scathing in this review. Embarcation was a shambles. Rome was not the main port for embarcation, but i still ended having to queue in 4 different wrong lines after being directed by costa staff. All costa seemed to be interested in was to sell the all inclusive beverage package, which compared to other lines seems to be a good deal. This being the case, there was only water available during breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Tea and coffee was only available at breakfast time and during afternoon tea. Any other time it had to be purchased. Unless you had purchased the package or had the USA water exemption, water had to be purchased at dinner. Food at night was good, however if you missed your set dining, the only other option was to pay for food. Don't know what happened if you were on a costa excursion and came back after your seating time however. Lunch was varied, but with the same choices every day. Breakfast was diabolical. If you wanted anything either than a continental breakfast, the dining room was an option serving "International" fare. This was wait served And consisted of a full English - bacon, eggs, terrible brownish coloured beans etc., if for example you did not want eggs, this was not an option - you always had to have the lot as it was a preset plate. A Belgian breakfast - waffle and synthetic cream, an AMerican breakfast - pancakes and maple syrup and I can't remember what else as after the second day of trying to queue, and it was a long queue, I lost the will and kept to the buffets at the Lido. These were the same every day, nothing varied whatsoever, but you could get tea, coffee, water and concentrated fruit juices -until they turned the machines off. Entertainment was dire. Ok if you liked to hear the same Italian songs sung by different singers. There were good acts, one female singer, one male singer, an illusionist that was good but there was a lot of walking and prancing about, a variety show that was saved by a man using members of the audience and proceeding to pick their pockets. The dancers were average and unfortunately they put a show on every other day. There was major uncertainty about the itinerary, one of the stops was Ashdod, but this was cancelled. We were notified at embarkation therefore had no time to rearrange any private tours. Seems ironic that they could email me to remind me to book costa tours and the beverage package but not about things like rescheduling stops. At nine o clock when we were having dinner, either the day prior to a sea day, or the day before, the stop, I'm sorry I can't remember, but the port of Crete was cancelled due to industrial action at the port and was replaced with santorini. All in all the cruise was turning into a mystery tour! We had no choice but to book a costa tour for a full day in Galilee on the 7th November, but this was excellent due to the guide. We also had a wonderful meal at a hotel, which to be honest was the best meal we had all trip. They took our passports off us at embarkation and kept them until we got to Isreal despite us requesting them back for when we went ashore. We asked what would happen if we missed the ship at one of the ports, we were told that our costa card would be sufficient. I can just imagine how that would go down if we tried to book an airline ticket! The queue to get the passport back was incredible. All in all any arrangement by costa was shambolic, but no one seemed to care. I talked to several people who, for them, this was their first cruise, and have stated that they will never cruise again. Shame, as it's a wonderful experience. The entertainment staff in general were noisy, shouting even when they had microphones. One good thing though was if you liked ballroom dancing, they did actively encourage it with lessons on Deck and dance partners in the evening. This seemed to be enjoyed by a lot of people. If you want a library book - forget it, take your own. If you want games, unless you booked them out early you had no chance. All in all we have cruised with costa 4 times now, and this will be the last unless they get their act together. Read Less

This was our first on cruise on Costa (Favolosa) and did not meet our expectation compare to other cruises we had taken in the past. Although, the ship was fairly new (4 years), we were disappointed by the lack of customer care, limited food selections with average quality and staff professionalism. We paid for the premium cabin service but could never get a hold of room service. When I complained to the customer service desk, her answer was "we cannot do anything since we have a big crowd you need to keep trying". Excursions were another disappointment. Length of tour was shorter than advertised. Tour guides were ok. We will not use Costa again on future cruises. Read Less

I have never encountered such an ineffective customer service (and I mean the customer desk and e-mail customer service, the other staff at the ship was ok). We were 9 in our party and had an altogether good time at the ship based on our own company, the excellent dinners and the party-crew. On the bad side were: It was really cheap of costa to charge for water and coffee and tea were only free at certain times and quite poor quality. In total the cost is more expensive than other better cruiselines after all the extras. We took some proffessional photos and wanted to buy them but somehow we got the wrong instructions on when to pick them up and had to finally disembark without the pictures (which we had already paid for). We left all contact information to the customer service desk and they were to contact us when they got hold of the photografer. That didn't happen. I tried to find contact information online and wrote about the situation, no reply. After a few more e-mail I got an answer that they were forwarding my question to another "customer service". By then I didn't want to wait two moore weeks for them to answer so I wrote directly and actually got an answer that they would get back to me after they've heard from the staff on the boat. I guess they haven't, beacause I haven't heard from them since then even though I have e-mailed them several more e-mails and asked for a phone number etc. We still havent heard (now about 6 weeks later) and certainly haven't got our money for the photos back! They just have no idea of what customer service is. I'm pondering sending them a basic online course in my next mail. If you want to cruise (which in general is lovely) don't choose Costa! Read Less

To begin with are the positive.... The ship was very clean and beautiful. We had a suite which was absolutely beautiful and perfect. Nicest suite we have ever been in. Our butler and room steward were fabulous and willing to do anything to make us happy. Now that is it with the positive! Food was HORRIBLE!! And this was not just our opinion. Everyone in our group plus nearby table guests were in agreement. The chef should have realized this but all the plates being returned with food on them! Only hot breakfast food was in the dining room for a couple of hours each morning. And be sure NEVER to order the scrambled eggs--they must have been powdered ones---absolutely dreadful! No buffet or cafeteria style dining in the evening available. You had to go to the dining room. No extras in dining room---if you wanted a mixed drink you better bring one with you. No coffee as well. Only pop, wine or bottled water. The late seating started at 9:30 pm and by the time dinner was done it was 11:30 and time for bed!! Staff throughout the ship not accommodating and quite rude at times, but there were a very few nice ones. Read Less

After reading many negative reviews was a bit hesitant to book and wasn't expecting anything exceptional, well We were surprised we travelled as a group of eight and found the cruise to be very enjoyable. have cruised with four other lines and found costa to be the most memorable. boarding was quick as was disembarkation . the entertainment and activities were well planned, Décor at first was overwhelming to many patterns on the walls couldn't tell a door from a wall but we got used to it. after the third day. we were in minority as only minimal English speaking passengers on board but staff were courteous and tried very hard to communicate with us. We had a balcony cabin on deck 6 our room was always clean even though we never saw our cabin steward. we only took a few organized tours and did other ports of call independently. The ship offered shuttle buses to town at ports where transport was needed, in our opinion it was not expensive and worth the cost as it was convenient due to being easy not having any hassles trying to find your own way as you are only in port a minimal amount of time. Time is whats valuable. only negative we had was the drinks package while it was good value if you are a heavy drinker everyone in the cabin was expected to buy it. was not catered for individuals. we were three in a cabin and two drank little alcohol so there would of been no value for everyone to buy the package . also the food was ok but the same thing every day with no variety at the buffet . restaurant food was just ok nothing flash .but same food just a different name each night with a different dressing . if you wanted anything special on the menu you had to pay extra for it . all in all the cruise had a European vibe and that's why we took it . it was a fun ship to be on . We would cruise costa again ports visited Savona, Marseilles, Palama Majorca, Cadiz, Malaga, Lisbon, La Coruna, Le Havre, Dover , Amsterdam. only regret we had was we opted to take a shore tour in Lisbon . advertised 5 hrs 4WD to see all the country sites around Portugal. It was useless spent most of the time sitting in traffic and driving through bush stop for a quick photo stop at a lookout then only had 30 minutes at the final destination which was beautiful needed at least two hours there better to have spent the day in Lisbon town independently. Traffic Not Costas fault but this tour was overrated not worth the money spent. Read Less

We have not travelled on the Costa line for 3 years and the change was beyond belief. No carafe water was served in the dining room at any time. Bottled water was available, of course, at a cost and including a service charge. Tea and coffee were available at breakfast, but not at lunch or dinner, unless one was prepared to pay for specialist drinks. The buffet closed at 5 p.m. for everything except iced water, (no hot water available after this time). We do not drink alcohol or soft drinks so this made it more difficult. Food quality was very poor. One lunch time we left the dining room, after an inedible meal, and were so hungry we had to go to the buffet. There was no steak served at any time, in the dining room, and one could have prawns or lobster, but at a price-- this in the ordinary dining room. We remember the quality and variety of the meals that used to be served, and it seems such a shame that it has deteriorated so badly. We are pearl members and chose this cruise for the excellent itinerary, but will never travel with Costa again, while present policy holds. The entertainment was poor, probably more suited to children. Shore excursions, that we were able to do, were excellent, but few available on the first leg of our cruise, as there were few English speakers. After having two tours cancelled we had to tell the tour office that we would be happy to take any tour, but still had tours cancelled late on the day before a tour, and after the tour office closed, so too late to organise anything else. We had pre- booked, weeks before embarkation. Staff and crew were generally excellent, except in the dining room, where there were too few waiters for meals, and too many drinks waiters. The ship was very pretty, but lacking in lounge areas; standing room only in the evenings, after first dining, unless one wanted to sit in the theatre. Comparing it to the 5 other cruise lines we have travelled, Costa does not give value for money. Read Less

We had toured a week in Venice and a week in Florence. As Valentines Day was approaching we started exploring something different for the following week. Since we were already in Europe we wondered about a cruise. This cruise was the only one to fit our interest and time frame. We got a great last minute deal by phone directly through Costa in the week before departure. We were thrilled to find that we had been randomly upgraded from an Outside Classic Ocean View (window) to a Premium Veranda (balcony). Very few English as a first language passengers, but many spoke enough to be understood and were very warm to us. There were a LOT of Families from Italy, Spain, France, Germany and Slavic countries. A TON of kids who were up late after the 9PM Seating for Dinner and would be howling while being dragged down the long passageway to their cabin and bed. The kids at 6:30 Dinner seating were very well behaved. The Dining Room crew was very creatively active in musical "celebrations" both in the Dining Room and also in the Theatre. I'd suggest that they could provide more late night snack and room service options. There was a LOT of smokers on board There is only one inside smoking lounge, but it traveled to other areas in a big way, but it is southern Europe and that way everywhere you go. Bottom Line is... The food was fine. The itinerary was fine. The weather was fine. The crew was fine. The ship was fine. Read Less

I really enjoyed the dance lessons by the pool during the day and the shows in the theatre were really really good. 3. The excursions were too expensive. I didnt attend any of them 4. All if the announcements were in Italian and Spanish ( which i hardly understand) i had a hard time understanding the English announcements. 5. The pools and jakuzi were always crowded. The "adult only" pool was full if children. I never saw them empty the water in the pools. They opened the pools a hit late (8) and was not able to go for an early swim. 6. A little background. Experienced cruisers, have cruises with most of the main lines, and this was our fourth cruise with Costa in the past 2 years. We have cruises twice on the NeoRomantica, and once on the Magica. This was a bit of a "bonus" cruise (as we have a lot of travel plans this year) so we did this on a budget which for us, meant no suite, but instead a premium balcony. Being Costa Pearl members - we had no problem - We were very pleasantly surprised to have our table for two, late dining, aft Ceres Restaurant - ALL fulfilled! Great 5* start! Embarkation was the easiest ever. No big port - No queue - no lines, just sign here, photo and "on". We had a premium balcony which is just a regular "Carnival" style balcony. The cabin is showing its age - few cigarette burns on the carpet, and it really is obviously in need of an overhaul. The balcony - sorry to say, was filthy - the gutter in the balcony had long strands of black human hair - I didnt mention it first day, but after the next clean, when it was still there, I did call. The cabin steward was prob the biggest disappointment. he finally did clean the balcony - but it was "an effort". I requested face flannels a few times - he always told me "yes" - but they never ever did appear. He also missed the blue pool towels a few times - just little things which we had to call about - which when one happens after another - starts to grate on you - as I said, not the best steward we have had. It is the first time ever we have not given extra tips(above the standard gratuity) to our cabin steward. I am afraid to say he did nothing to warrant it. The toilet OMG - blocked daily - that did become a pain in the butt (literally) - to a point where one morning we were given a key to a spare cabin three decks below us - not nice - These cabins honestly are in need of dry dock... time for a full overhaul. The ship itself - actually, although gawdy, loud and totally OTT - I liked it! Its all Bling and has aged better than the cabins. It is a bit "1990s" - BUT - it does somehow have a much nicer feel to it than say the Magica. The staff - excellent - For a big ship - one can tell from embarkation that the staff are happy. Thats coming from the top down. Every area has its team, and each team seems to gel well and in general - lots of happy staff. THAT makes the Serena special - and to us, warrants its high rating. We met many staff on board whom we knew from previous cruises, one in particular, Peter, is lke our lucky mascot at Sea, For some weird reason, on every single of our last four cruises, different ships, embarkation day, Peter has always been the first waiter we have seen - bizarre - and wonderful!! FOOD: Buffett - dont even go there - its madness - just a battle of hands and feet and rude rude rude guests - seriously - I am appalled at the manners of these people - animals have more decorum. We settled for continental breakfast in our cabin (Gluten free pastries provided) - Lunch we chose to have in the Ceres Restaurant - I am Gluten Free and anyone with special diets will find the Ceres restaurant IS open daily for lunch - there is a section specifically for special diets. Gluten free choices are a HUGE plus for Costa - I just adore all the choices available for Gluten Free - 11/10 Costa! Dinner at night could run just a tad too late - even for we, who are late diners. However, first class service, table for two aft, what more could we ask for We chose to dine in the Club Bacco Restaurant twice this cruise and loved every moment. For a truly civilised dining experience away from the maddening crowd - at only 25 euro per person - this is well spent. The Club on Serena is magnificent - awesome views over the sea, and a live pianist entertaining throughout The Lobster Caesar was fantastic - The shrimps - just amazing - so fresh - succulent - and what is a simple meal is made into a feast. Favourite mains - the Veal and the Lamb - the lamb especially - perfection on the plate. Special thanks to Chef Lara - what a wonderful young lady who is passionate about her food. She is happy to stop by your table if you wish, and happy to have a gourmet chat. As food producers ourselves - we appreciated this gesture. Shows we dont do. Musicians - as ever Costa excel. I think our only regret on this cruise was the timing. It was already into Italian vacation time, and honestly - the only fault in the ship lay in the guests, some seriously rude and appallingly bad mannered guests. Oh and we were a bit pd off at the Ecig rule. We both stopped smoking two years ago, and use a zero nicotine shisha pen - It is the rule that these are used only in smoking areas - how awful to be made to be back in "lepers corne" once more - We did use our ecig - very discretely - and low key. We did however see smokers smoking in the NON SMOKING areas, and also some idiots throwing a LIT cigarette butt over the side in port waaaargghhhhhhhhhh Other appalling guests included babies in the jacuzzis in nappies (diapers) - We stayed out of the pools - lot of suspect cloudy "water" going on if you get my drift. We would sail the Serena again - but woulc choose a quieter off peak season - Surprisingly great though - BIG ship with staff with BIG HEARTS! Well done Costa! - You treated our loyalty beautifully, granted our wishes, and threw in some nice perks -incuding a lovely gift at the end of our cruise See you soon!   Read Less

Costa really needs to solve the unruly children problem on their ships. This is our 4th costa cruise and it is getting worse - children jumping into the adult pool and whirlpools. " Adults Only" signs need to be posted in different languages and Costa should enforce the rules as the Europeans let their children run wild with no manners . Adult couples at our evening dinner table complained that it felt like a noisy, family kitchen and surrounded by children. Suggestion: Costa should seat families with children on one side of the dining room and couples on the opposite side to ensure a relaxing atmosphere for those who want an adult dining experience. Buffet restaurant needs better organizational flow as long line ups and different food stations require another line up resulting in eating your food cold when you can finally find a table to eat at. Food at buffet was good in variety and taste (remember that this is European cuisine, not American). Evening dining room food was either very good or not so good, depending on the particular dish. Need more menu choices and without giving up quality. For the most part, good service. Recommend the all inclusive drink package. Lovely ship. Evening entertainment had good dancing and listening music with singers. Evening shows did not impress me but were okay for many of the guests as far as I could tell. I was apprehensive in taking this Costa cruise as I noticed the food quality on my last 2 cruises was going downhill, so, I was pleasantly surprised and hope that Costa finally realizes that many customers choose Costa for the experience of good quality Italian cuisine and takes steps to make this a priority on all of their ships at all times.   Read Less

I just read the review from april 30 2014, and I think we were on the same cruise. And I could not agree more. This cruise was not a nice experience. The ship was too crowded, lots of kids running around and occupying all swimmingpools. And the decks had so many sunbeds it was at times difficult to walk around. The food was not of particular good quality, and there were too much waiting in line. And a fight for table space. And often it was no coffee or orange juice to be found. Fortunately I had the possibility for breakfast in my cabin. The restaurant was no good too much time waiting. And small portions of not good food. And having to pay for water wirt dinner? And I missed the possibility to dine in the buffet restaurant, but no such luck. Another stange thing was that you had to pay to use shuttle bus from ship to the cities visited. That should have been included. These are just some of my complaints. And I also tried to talk to the english speeking hostess, but she was not of much help. Whatever I tried to explain, the reply was, it was Costa policy. I tried to be connected to a more responsible officer, but no such luck. I will prepare a long letter to Costa Cruises with all my complaints. I did not receive the cruise I prdered and paid for. Never again Costa Cruises Read Less

Do not chose this cruise line. Regardless of the price. I beg you. There are too many excellent cruise lines. This is not one of them. First, the embarkation process. This was a total disaster. There were no announcements made. There was an "information" line, in which I spent 45 minutes. She checked my documents, and and was told to wait here. It was immediately apparent that there was no purpose to the line. We then saw numerous people walking outside the building, in a pouring rain, with their luggage. We followed. There was confusion once in this new building. After some help from Italian speaking passengers, we got luggage tags, which we put on our luggage, along with a number (6), presumably for another line. We then followed them into the previous building, again in the pouring rain, with our number 6. Number one was called, and all passengers, regardless of their number (1 to 10), lined up, with pushing and shoving. We lined up as well. This was more of a free for all than an orderly process. Costa does this every week. I should have taken this to be a warning of things to come.Suffice it to say, things went downhill from here. We only met our cabin person on the last day of the 12 day cruise, and only by happenstance. We went back to the cabin to grab something at the request of another passenger, and ran into the cabin steward. I am unclear how this happens. We have always known our cabin people from day 1. Next was dinner. After waiting 1/2 hour, we were provided a menu. We were then asked what we wanted to drink. I said coffee. The reply was that I would need to go up to deck 5, and purchase it, and bring it back down. At this point, after waiting for so long, and the coffee thing, we spoke with the person at the front desk. He said that the long wait was due to the muster drill. I said that all the tables around us were being served, and were on the main course, so this was not the reason. He then repeated the muster drill explanation, only louder. As if I would then understand. We ended up leaving in frustration. We thought we could go to the buffet, but there is no buffet for dinner. We also tried to call the front desk, several times, and they didn't answer. On one call, we gave them 45 minutes. We were forced to dress, and go stand in line at the front desk to get answers to our questions. I could go on and on. I think you catch the drift. When you work hard, you expect and deserve a great vacation. You won't find it here. Read Less

As a group of four Canadians travelling together, this is the first time we have had so many negative things to say. Embarkation went well. Ship itself was nice with excellent teen club. Cabin and Dining Service was excellent, and we really appreciated the guys we got to know. Other staff seemed more stand-offish. A lot of them did not look like they were happy in their jobs. Nightly entertainment was appreciated, and some were totally awesome. Cabin with window was very nice--more spacious than inside cabins we have been in on other ships. Disembarkation also went well. **Pet Peeves: ----Smoking was disgusting. We were so used to non-smoking in public places in Canada we were grossed out on the ship. We all were stuffed up every morning onboard and found bars etc too smoky. Non-smoking areas right beside smoking tables did not work. --- Rude, loud children yelling and screaming in hallways outside our room ....up til 1:30 at night. Did not stop until guest services called several times. --- Forced to be assertive/aggressive which is not usually the "Canadian" way.... otherwise you would **:never get off the elevator as some of the mostly Italian guests would plow onto the elevator as soon as it stopped ** never get through the self-serve line as some people continued to butt in front -- Shore excursions cancelled in English several times, because of lack of numbers -- Nickel and diming by Costa... were told not to bring drinks on board ship because of health concerns. Water bottle in fridge was going to cost $2.99! Had no filling of water bottle signs by water dispensers in self-serve restaurant areas. Pops/Sodas extra cost. -- Shuttle service to edge of port given $6 charge per person...would find out night before in newsletter and required to get a ticket if we wanted to use it. They did not tell patrons that in Malaga, for example, there is a cheap public bus that comes right into port, as well as the Hop On Hop Off Bus. Sad! Even some staff that we talked to found some of the Italian patrons rude and bold. -- English was usually the fifth or sixth language used for messages on the loud speaker or stage, (if used at all)   Read Less

The ship is sharp and well laid out . . . it is actually the same ship as the Carnival Legend/Miracle twins with a bit classier decorations and fittings. Costa out shines everyone on embarkation proceedings . . . but is in the "not ready for prime time" class for food and tours. Food . . . well prepared but dull compared to other cruise lines such as NCL and Royal Caribbean . . . and with poor access. A 3 hour only lunch buffet . . . less than 2 hours for served breakfast . . . and no dinner or evening buffet options were very old school. You essentially eat at your assigned dinner time or starve! Food was well prepared but with very limited choices.. Tours had to be pre-purchased and there were no refunds. Costa then mixed languages which essentially gave you half a guide. When questioned, the tour staff shrugged and essentially said "tough".   Read Less

Worst cruise ever!!! I have been on over 20 cruises, Azamara, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival and Premier (got to be old to remember that one). I booked the Costa Serena for 8 of us, 2 families with adult children, mostly due to the itinerary. We embarked in Civitavecchia, Italy (Rome). Most people had embarked in Savona, so embarkation was very quick. Strange thing, they insisted on taking our passports stating that Italian Customs required they keep them in a safe. The passports would be reviewed by authorities prior to disembarkation and returned to us. What if we had an issue in port?? Also in the past 2 years I was on a cruise from Venice and another from Stockholm and was able to keep my passport. Muster drill was done in English for the few of us English speaking guests onboard. We met in a lounge then up to life boats. Paul, the English speaking host was very informative and stated that the ship would sail at only 50% capacity for this week. Wow, things don't look good for Costa. Considering the low occupancy rate, I thought it was funny that we were not given any upgrades. I paid full price for 3 cabins back in November and watched the price go down to $299 pp prior to sailing, after final payment. I called my travel agent and Costa to try to get an upgrade or any other type of compensation but they would not budge. You would think that an upgrade that costs them nothing would be good customer service, especially after all the bad press! Then negatives... -5 Euro charge for breakfast in your cabin -2 Euro charge for room service -10.50 Euro for a vodka and OJ, charge separately for each -no lido deck buffet for dinner, dining room ONLY for dinner -dinner menu with very few choices, 2 soups, 2 appetizers, 2 pasta, 4 main -no steak, fillet or lobster -breakfast in the dining room was a buffet? Same as lido deck. - midnight buffet with all the carvings, but no food. Waiters walked around with trays of cookies?? -setting up onboard charges with a machine that didn't work, purser's desk would not help, yes I did it online prior to boarding -very poor service from onboard staff, purser's desk The only excursion I booked with Costa was from Savona to Monoco which I paid for in March. Three days into the cruise I noticed a very small note in the "Today", daily paper that the excursion had been cancelled. I went down to the shore excursion desk and was told that it was cancelled because it was too close to the grand prix. They stated that I would not be reimbursed with my original form of payment but they would give me an onboard credit to cover all my expenses and tips!! Since I had to pay for tips and onboard charges I figured it would all work out. I was wrong, the last day when the final bill arrived I was not given the credit and had multiple charges?? After talking to the shore excursion desk and the purser's desk no one was willing to help. I was told to dispute the charge with my credit company. When I came home I emailed Costa and a Costa representative called me. She said that in the fine print of the cruise contract it states that shore excursions cancelled after sailing will be reimbursed as an onboard credit. She went on to say that onboard credits do not include reimbursements for tips and that no cash refund is given. After much discussion Costa agreed to send me a check. Just Crazy!! Upon disembarkation, the ship cleared customs and passengers were getting off but we had to wait for our passports. The passports sat behind the desk but we had to wait almost an hour because the desk didn't open until 8am!!! In over 20 cruises I have never had a bad cruise. This is actually my first cruise review, but I felt it necessary to let others know just how bad it was. I think the only positive reviews are from first timers. While I realize cruising has changed in 30 years I still find it a wonderful way to travel! Just not with Costa, never again!! Read Less

People smoking everywhere. Eatable food but not the Italian experience we were expecting. I had better food at the train station in Rome. Crew and staff very disorganized. It was very hard get to our Muster station and once there the safety exercise took almost 2 hours.which we took in Savona, one full day after our departure. Two months after the Concordia disaster! Safety is not an issue with Costa. Crew did not have time for questions, even a simple one. We were always directed to the exceedingly long line at customer service desk. Italian, German, Spanish, Russian take precedence over English. The decoration was a crazy to our taste. Seems like the owner had a son studying art with a Major in Psychedelic 60's and he just let the boy design and decorate the interior of the boat. Disappointing if you have seen Rome/Venice architectural heritage. Itineraries are great, but very disorganized. Read Less
