First port in the Amazon. We opted for the Ship's half day excursion to visit the rain forest. A 1 hour bus ride through the town and countryside brought us to the Tapajos River park, where we walked for 45 minutes through the rain forest. The Santarem National Forest walk was very interesting. Our guide Eduardo was really enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We also had a native guide, Pano, who carried a machete, and guided us through the forest/jungle. They identified and discussed lots of trees, plants and also the customs of the locals.
