  • Destination: the British Isles & Western Europe
  • Cabin Type: Concierge Class 2

Let me start by saying two things...First, we have always been loyal Celebrity cruisers and Elite + members, having been on them so many times I lose count. Second, the only things that don't lower this rating even lower are the ports were fun, and the crew's enthusiasm and friendliness were perfection !

Having recently been on a great Celebrity South American cruise last year, we were looking forward to the British Isles and Amsterdam, along with friends. From the minute we arrived to the minute we left there were issues with the quality, and care, and attention paid to these cruisers. It just seemed like the cruise was a little "off".

The biggest issues we had were overall cleanliness of the ship, incredible lines for everything, general miscommunication, and substandard entertainment.

I'll summarize the "highlights...

Our cabin...When we arrived it was if it no one came in after the last guest arrived (though they had)

- A very expensive purse with money ID and tkts from the last cruise was prominently left in the open safe

- Empty gum wrappers were about and in the drawers

- And not to gross you out, but there was a pair of DIRTY WOMEN'S UNDERWEAR in the bathroom !

Now if I can see all this after only a minute in the cabin, how much do they really care about cleanliness and germs?

Shore excursions

We were told by customer service and the website that a few excursions had to be booked on the ship. By the time we got there they were all booked up. We made our own plans - and more inexpensively as it turned out.

Edinburgh Tenders to the ship: A disaster. Took over 2 rainy hours to get back on the ship.

I have never seen so many disgruntled passengers. And it took awhile before anyone from the ship would address the angry mob to tell us what was happening. It didn't help that the Captain, while addressing this the next day, tried to make light of the situation. He fancied himself a real comedian throughout the cruise, which most of us didn't appreciate.

You've tendered before, Celebrity, this should not have been amateur hour for you. And I'm sorry...hot chocolate isn't going to make it better.

LINES LINES LINES...for everything...the guest relations and shore excursions, , and even getting passports returned was a hassle.

Secretly Charging your stateroom.

While "at sea" we were approached by the wine cellar staff to participate in a wine event. It looked good and we had a nice time. However, we were never informed of a charge at the time until $82 appeared on our final bill. I guess if we had our daily activity paper we would have known, or perhaps I should have asked. We contacted guest relations to discuss, but never got a response from them or the Wine Cellar.

Entertainment.

Lame Lame Lame. The "productions" were disjointed and amateurish. Costumes would come apart, dancers weren't in sync, the singers were weak. Also, while some of the "one-nighters" that came on the were OK, they all were pretty similar. (worked the West End, been in Les Miz, sang the same Celine/Boccelli songs.) Seems like all the entertainment budgets are being directed to Royal Caribbean ships.

Just some "nits"...

Why does Celebrity have to charge $5.50 (PLUS 18% Gratuity!) for a bottle of water in your cabin? It didn't affect us since we were on the beverage package, but still... Would it kill you to maybe offer that as a "perk" for being a CC member or booking Concierge Class? The "nickel and dime-ing on these ships are starting to get a bit obnoxious.

We received a bottle of wine upon arrival, but unfortunately it was alcohol free. (Why bother ? :-) It took two days, but we finally got another one.

Amenities have been reduced or eliminated in the staterooms. (What happened to the q-tips? :-)

Try to make the ship match the port experience.

- The ship was touring the British Isles, yet the signage and a lot of the merchandise aboard was still promoting the Baltics Cruise (that recently ended).

- Also, the bar staff should have figured there would be in increased interest in Irish Whiskey and Scotch, having visited Scotland and Ireland, and many visiting the distilleries there. They did not and the ship ran out !

That said, we are hoping this is a hiccup, and in good faith have booked another Celebrity cruise...this time to the Mediterranean next year. However, we have not ruled out redirecting to another cruise line for a bit to check out the competition.
