We had an opportunity to sail so inexpensively, I simply couldn't say no. Honestly, we had two inside cabins for two weeks at a total cost of $256, plus taxes and gratuities. On top of that, we received credits totaling over $400. None of that is a misprint.
So it's hard to be hard on HAL. I'm not "that guy" - I almost never, ever write negative reviews. But ...
I'll start with the positive. ...
We were on the Rotterdam VII for 21 Days (January 25 to Feb 15) for the Seafarer & Wayfarer Collector Cruise. Let me first say that:
I waited to write this for a month - so, I could consider all the issues that we had dispassionately. I’ve tried to be as hones as possible - hopefully it doesn’t come off as some sort of “get off my lawn” rant….
We are 4-Star Mariners - these were our ...
Initially, we chose this 74-day cruise based solely on the “Grand Voyage” itinerary. The ports-of-call for the cruise, most of the excursions we took, and the passengers & locals we met were great fun & exciting. However, Holland America’s cruise ship (the Volendam) was awful - and based on that we would never want to cruise w/ Holland America again or recommend the cruise line to anyone. We ...
We purchased a Neptune suite in the rear corner, so we had good all-round views and a large veranda. The only thing that was good about this expensive cruise were the workers on board. Very good people.
Cabin - Large but many issues listed below.
Food - Good at start but got worse over the trip. The specialty restaurants were much better than the public ones.
Entertainment - Similar all ...
The food was sub-par. Some examples are sandwiches with 1 piece of paper-thin meat and fish that had an ammonia taste (meaning it's old and not edible). Most, not all food tasted as if it came out of a can or box-example, coconut shrimp. At best the food was inconsistent, upcharges for steak and lobster in regular dining. little entertainment on the ship. For 16 days, 2 different comedians, ...
The Nieuw Amsterdam is definitely dated. Looks, smells, and feels like an old ship. The Pinnacle class ships are much nicer than this Signature Line ship or the even older Vista Class ships. Will never go on HAL on other than a Pinnacle Class ship.
The entertainment was horrible. Almost non-existent. There is literally nothing going on-- day or night. Main entertainment was watching a ...
I just got off the Nieuw Statentdam (aka Hospice of the seas). I've been on dozens of cruises, and this was by far the worst.
The ship had far fewer common areas than any other ship I've been on. It's not an old ship, so why was it designed so poorly? I don't need water slides and go-carts, but at least a few places to sit. They shoved in as many cabins as they could with little thought to ...
I travel often and booked this cruise with my family for my parents 40th wedding anniversary 3 months before we sailed.
I booked two Vista suites online 7039 and 7041 3 months ago to be next door to my family since we were a larger group. Our total was over 13K for the rooms.
As we boarded the ship. Without any notice our rooms were downgraded to the 6th floor with separate beds. We were ...
We chose this ship because we wanted to go away for the Christmas Holiday.
Embarkation was easy for us. This was our 4th HAL cruise and the 2nd on this ship. We have also sailed Carnival, Princess, RCL, Celebrity and Azamara. We had always enjoyed HAL, but we won’t sail the Nieuw Amsterdam again.
Pros:
Band in BB King’s Blues club is fabulous! The live entertainment in all venues was ...
The mainstage performances were the worst that I had in my 10+ cruise experiences. There were all male performers for the entire trip with very low quality. Obviously, the ship chose to save the cost of using low profile performers. The cruise entertainment director did a very poor job. Also, my first time use luggage case was damaged in the transport from the room to the dock. The food ...
