We have been on another Holland America cruise ship that went to Alaska and liked it so much we decided to take the Nieuw Amsterdam through the Panama Canal. It was exciting because this was the maiden voyage for the ship to pass through the canal! The service and staff was excellent. Our cabin steward was very attentive to us and took exceptional care to make us feel special. Our room ...

Another Really Good Cruise!

For our background we are in the late 50s/early 60s age category and this is our third HAL cruise with four cruises on another line. We like the peaceful nature of 10 day sailings, the teak wood promenade, and the superior service. Embarkation was pleasant. It was organized and a smooth transition. We were onboard and lunching in the Lido by noon and rooms were ready shortly thereafter. The ...

Worst ever

We chose HAL as we has never cruised with them before. We thought we would try a different cruise line as we have only ever cruised with Princess. A big mistake! What a disappointment! The zuiderdam is in the worst condition that we have ever experienced. Our first cabin 6072 had wooden wedges inbetween the wall and the ceiling to try to stop the creaking in the ceiling. To no avail....hence ...

First time I've sailed on a ship that belonged in dry dock.

We chose this cruise because we wanted to see first hand the progress made on the new canal. Although the excursion to the site of the new locks was all we had hoped for, the cruise itself was a major disappointment. The biggest problem was the number of maintenance projects that were being performed throughout the cruise. There were several days when the paint fumes seeping into our ...

We chose this cruise strictly on the itinerary. The boat itself does have some issues. I definitely would not say it's a rust bucket, I thought the interior was wonderful. The balcony was amazing. We had cabins 7001&7003. Both were quiet and the balcony was way bigger than the Carnival or Norwegian we have previously sailed. Also, 7001 was in the front so the view from balcony to canal was ...

Embarkation for our panama Sunfarer cruise was very smooth. We arrived at cruise port by 11 and were on the ship by noon. We are an older couple (65 and 71) so we fit right in with the much older crowd than we have been with on other cruises. The ship certainly caters to us oldsters, both in décor and musical genres. Our cabin was spacious and beyond expectations. We had purchased a verandah ...

Great first time cruise experience

Review for a Caribbean - Western Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

This was my first cruise and it was a great experience. Being claustrophobic, I was unsure of my reaction to being out on the water and not able to see land. But, there is so much activity on the ship to distract you from those thoughts. The ship was very clean and well kept. The food was excellent!!! You could eat at anytime on the ship. I enjoyed dinner in the dinning room and sitting with ...

Backgorund- ME 63 and DW 58. This is our seventh cruise in 14 months. Second cruise on the NA in that time period. we were in an aft Neptune suite. Embarkation - no waiting. But the guy directing us wouldn't let us go to the suite counter check in since the regular counter had openings. Once there, we were told they would check us in, but we were in the wrong line. They obviously need to train ...

I can't compare HAL to any other line as it's the only one I've cruised on. However, my Mother was on almost every line available in the US and Europe. After she tried HAL she stayed with them and became a 4 star mariner until her passing. She introduced me to HAL in 2010 and I was hooked. Since then, I've introduced cruising to my 3 grown daughters. This was my 6th cruise and my daughters ...

Some Good, Some Not So Good

This was our 20th cruise but our 1st on HAL. We have sailed on MSC (Yacht Club), RCI, Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian and Carnival. We thought it was about time we tried HAL after some friends said they liked it. At the outset, let me say that we are aware that many things about a cruise are subjective so I can only report on our experiences. Also, we believe that even an imperfect cruise is a ...
