brochures and promo not accurate. We knew low bridges would restrict us from using the sun deck at time. But not for days on end. We knew at some ports of call we would be double and triple banked. It happened too many times to be comfortable. So don’t get a Balcony. All this information should be spelt out and told how many times it would happen. in the promo. Cologne was the only port we had local entertainers in the Evening. Unfortunate we missed it due to going on an evening excursion. Promo gives you the impression this happened every night. Where possible. Our Entertainment Director Kane was brilliant so he made up for the disappointment. Could not fault staff. Staff brilliant food good enough could we have a chocolate treat with coffee. tours OK I got churched out talked out and walked out in the end. I thought the quiet vox was a device so you could wander around the sights by yourself if you did not want to be hearded like sheep around the sights, I stayed with tour group in case I missed out on something amazing. And the fear of getting lost. Make sure you have plenty of 50c Euro coins for toilets. overall enjoyed my trip. We made the Journey without changing boat. We were the last boat to do this from to Passau. The band was very average but the nights where Kane had quizzes and trivia were hilarious. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I wanted to see Germany and especially Neuschwanstein Castle. The trip included cities I had always wanted to see and the included excursions were perfect introductions to the towns we visited. The accommodations were comfortable; cozy but not too cozy! It was so wonderful to be able to unpack and enjoy the trip...unlike touring by bus where you have to repack every night and put your suitcase outside your room at the crack of dawn. The additional excursions were amazing too! I was thrilled that I was able to go to Neuschwanstein, even though I was the only person who signed up for that tour! The staff did everything in their power to make our trip fun and easy. We were pampered and catered to....like royalty! The food was excellent, and there was a variety that included regional dishes and more traditional food as well. We were able to sit where we wanted with various people which helped us to make new friends. Our evening talks with the Terry, tour director, allowed us to know what was going on the next day so we were prepared for the fun that awaited us. He had fun activities that kept us all in stitches laughing. Would I go again? You bet I would! In fact, my friend and I are going again on another Viking cruise next year!! Well worth the money! I loved everything about this cruise (except the weather which was cold and rainy). Our cruise went from Budapest Hungary to Amsterdam. Castles, vineyards, beautiful scenery, churches, shopping, history, demonstrations-so much to see and do. Our cruise director/stand up comedian/singer was positively amazing and multi-talented. He coordinated all the activities and shore excursions so everything ran smoothly. He was very knowledgeable about the ship and the history of the places we saw along the way. He was also very entertaining, cracking jokes and keeping us in stitches. All of the staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Our Cabin Steward was really sweet and did an excellent job of keeping our room tidy. The meals were amazing, I think there was something for everyone and everything was top notch. Our room was a tiny bit cramped, but there really isn't any way around that. The ship can only be so wide to sail the rivers and get through the locks. Even though a bit small, there was ample storage and closet space. Just to manage expectations, if you are used to sailing the big ocean ships like carnival where there are pools, rides, Broadway shows, spa, casino, gym and all kinds of shops etc. This ship is tiny compared to those big ocean cruise ships and space is limited. They have internet, a small library, a tiny shop, a bar and a nightly singing duo, and occasionally demonstrations and history classes about the places we sailed by or visited. Most everyone of the guests on the cruise were retirees. If you can't live without all the bells and whistles, this is probably not the cruise for you. That being said, we sailed during the night and were in another port the next day with an included walking tour or optional excursions, shopping and sightseeing on your own. Even when we sailed during the day, there was so much beautiful scenery to see along the way, we were never bored. I gave a 3 star to the fitness and recreation catagory because they don't really have any fitness or recreational activities per se. There is a walking track on the top deck. On the other hand, I felt like the shore excursions themselves gave us plenty of walking exercise. Read Less

Found our 14 Night Grand European Tour for the time of year and price that suited us. I would take another river cruise in a heart beat. Little disappointed when the walking track was closed for days on end so I just had to find another way to get my 12,000 steps in per day. The staff on the Gefjon were awesome, loads of fun, it was just great to spend 14 days with everyone. The shore excursions where packed with loads of things to see and do, no shortage of shore excursions to chose from. The dining was excellent, great selection of food for all meal times, sometimes it was difficult to select an evening meal as they all sounded so delicious. The deserts where over the top!. Very much enjoyed the entertainment and all activities onboard the Gefjon. The embarkation and disembarkation were top notch, we were well cared for at all times Read Less

Having never been in Europe before or on a river cruise, my wife and I were interested in experiencing a river cruise to see if we would like others in the future. From the Viking folks that met us at the airport and accompanied us to our buses to them taking us back there at the end of the journey, it was a marvelous experience. The ship was beautiful and a perfect size - our cabin was well appointed and always sparkling clean. Every staff member from the cleaning crew to the captain were so hospitable and glad to be our escorts. The service was magnificent and we had so much fun with wait staff, bartenders, entertainers and especially our cruise director - all of them so geographically diverse and engaging! Unfortunately for my waistline the food and snacks were remarkable at every meal. We tried to sit at different tables every meal and met so many wonderful people in doing so. The shore excursions and tours were first class from the beginning to the end and we always felt we had been treated like royalty - from the wonderful motor coaches to the hearing devices that made listening to tour guides so easy, especially in large crowds. The guides themselves were all natives of the area we were touring and so knowledgeable. We looked forward to the entertainment every night and fully enjoyed ourselves. Viking has it down - we will definitely be back! Read Less

We wanted a small ship cruise in the spring to this part of Europe. Viking was recommended by a friend so we booked the Grand European Cruise. The daily itinerary was busy enough to meet our exploratory and educational needs and balanced with relaxation and down time. We loved the Thermal baths, the architecture in the cities and villages, the castles, the hikes, learning the history of the various regions by our tour guides, dining out to sample the local cuisine, the operatic vocalists in Vienna, the numerous cathedrals and town squares, etc. On board our ship, we became very comfortable within a few days. Checking the TV for weather helped to know how the dress for our busy excisions. The lounge was a great place to just hang out and chill when needing time to relax. The staff and people on board were very friendly as well! Our meals were delicious and everything went off like clockwork. We had a blast!!! Read Less

This cruise was booked for my husband to spend his birthday on the Danube. We had fabulous weather, no rain for 17 days. Unfortunately we were cruising over Easter which limited some shore activities. The crew were great, very friendly and helpful. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. The food was good quality but a bit weird at times. They must eat some odd things in parts of Germany. We have done ocean cruising and I found our cabin small in comparison. We loved the under floor heating in the shower. There were lots of little extras with viking that made it special. Real champagne for drinks parties for example. The shore excursions were well organised and with one exception we had excellent local guides. The program manager was very funny and told some interesting stories along the way. My main complaint was the sun deck was flattened for five consecutive days. You are told there are times during the cruise when this can be the case, but I think it should have been made clearer. We signed up for this cruise because it coincided with peak tulip time in the Netherlands. Despite the crowds Viking was able to provide access to sites that generally avoided the crowds and gave us a good insight into the people and culture of Holland. Although a bit nippy at times the weather was excellent. The tours were generally extremely well done - although in Amsterdam museums would be better visited on one's own. The guides were well-informed. The food was great - variety, complimentary wine and beer The wait staff was superb - prompt, attentive, friendly. Game nights were hilarious. Pre-dinner talks from the master chef were an event to be looked forward to. The entire staff was extremely helpful, good-natured and provided advice and many small extras that made the cruise special. Embarkation and debarkation were handled very efficiently. I would not look elsewhere for a river cruise! While the cruise offered a lot there were several areas that we visited on our own by renting a car and getting local guides to visit special sites: Madurodam, Den Haag, Delft, Amersfoort, Leeuwarden, Franeker, Harlingen, and Marken. We wanted to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with a trip that was big and exotic! We travelled to Hawaii for our 35th anniversary and needed something bigger and better. We had been to Europe previously twice before but not since 1980 and then 1989. We loved Europe!! Then we saw an advertisement on our local TV station. GRAND EUROPEAN CRUSIE ON VIKING! We contacted the travel agent advertising this trip. Francis from Travel with Us Inc. did all the leg work. From the time we boarded the plane to Europe to the time we landed back home in Edmonton we had a great experience. There were a couple of hiccups with the low water levels in a couple of areas but Viking handled everything with great professionalism. Viking never left us guessing of what to expect. it felt like these hiccups were just part of the experience. The ship was very clean, the cabin was always cleaned promptly, the food was excellent with tons of food choices, the entertainment was cultural and fun, the staff were always courteous and helpful, the tours were handled like well greased machines, the ships tour director was very knowledgeable and just a perfect personality for a job well done. The two week, Grand European River Cruise appealed to us much more than a weeklong cruise. We believed it would allow us to “settle in” without immediately counting how many days we had left. And “settle in” we did. We began in Amsterdam after a four day jet jag adjustment in Amsterdam. Embarkation was efficient and welcoming, and the wine tasting on the Aquavit Terrace was a grand introduction. We were immediately impressed with our stateroom, and the overall condition and appearance of the Viking Longboat. Exceeding both were the professionalism and warmth of the ship’s staff. The variety of food and beverage selections ensured there was something for everyone. Service was outstanding, as was the quality of the meals, from breakfast through dinner. Shore excursions offered were varied and appropriate. Guides were uniformly outstanding, from personality and communication skills to their professional knowledge. It was hard to depart in Budapest. We wanted the cruise to never end. We came with very high expectations, and they were exceeded in all respects. Read Less

This was my 7th Viking Cruise... and sailed again with Viking because we have ALWAYS had the finest serviced and experience on every ship and Cruise we've been on with Viking. Ships are magnificent... clean and comfortable. Crew and staff are always first rate... always there to help, service is beyond reproach, in fact laudatory .... "service with a smile" ... the breakfast chef even knew my name on the second day and remembered my mundane breakfast order before I arrived at his station!!!! On tours, optional or otherwise, we never felt "lost" or felt the effort ( or $$ ) wasn't worth it ! Again, another great trip with Viking. A plus and a major reason for choosing Viking is that there are no casinos on board, nor ferris wheels, or sandboxes for juveniles ( though you will find a putting green ! ). The Viking experience is pleasurably a 55+ community on the water ... and please keep it that way!! Read Less

Never been to Europe and never been on a river cruise. Been on several ocean cruises and really liked the “smallness” and tranquility offered by the river cruise. Selected this river cruise because of its itinerary. We were more than pleased with the quality our rooms and quality/variety of our meals. Because there were less than 200 people on board, we got to several people over our two weeks plus we got to know many of the staff. Excellent choice of tours to take at each city and the guides were all very, very good. All the tours were well-organized and the transportation to all the tours was comfortable and organized well. The evening get togethers in the loungewete both fun and informative.Breakfast choices were excellent as were the lunch choices. I also really enjoyed sitting on my veranda in the evenings when we were cruising because it was so peaceful. Service was awesome and I will do another Viking river cruise in the future!! Read Less

My wife and I saved and planned for a couple of years to take a 14 day romantic river cruise through Europe, our dream vacation. It turned out to be the worst trip we have ever taken. To summarize; 36.45 hours on a bus, 14.25 hours of free time to explore the towns visited, 10 hours of daylight cruise, includes 3 hours of Rhine valley cruise during 2 hr lunch on lower level of rented tourist day boat, changed boats after bus transfer, upper deck closed most of trip, unpack/pack 3 times, optional tours a great disappointment. Viking knew about river issues for weeks, yet no communication, rescheduling or cancelation allowed We did not board the boat until the 4th day, after docking at a gravel pit. Due to hotel stay for 1st two nights, all the busing and lunches serving 200 people at once in local restaurants, not on the boat, as advertised, we did not get full use of the "Silver Drink Package". We had to change boats 1/2 way through the trip, thus another long bus ride and lost time cruising. Most cruising at night. Ships were docked 3 deep thus we had to walk through other ship lobbies or across their upper deck and could not use our balcony as the next boat was 6 inches away. We passed through 69 locks BUYER BE AWARE, 2 weeks later, still no call from Customer Service as promised. Read Less

My husband and I were recommended this cruise by friends. Things did not flow quite as well as it had been planned as no rain meant very low water levels. So low in fact that at one point of the Rhine we could have walked across the river! Despite this our trip got off to a fun start in Amsterdam - originally the port to board our ship we ended up staying at the Hilton for an extra two nights before bus travel to Cologne and a quirky quarry where we boarded the Gefjon. Explanations and support was offered all the way to keep us informed of river levels and changes that might/did occur. I am an experienced traveller and also involved at times moving large groups of people on excursions and across countries - Well done to our Cruise Director and his amazing team. As a travel coordinator on the other side of the world I know how hard this is. There are always people that gripe about changes etc I feel very strongly that we got the best trip available. Our cabin was clean and well serviced ( twice a day). The food was always of a high standard with plenty of options available. We did not purchase the drink package and had no worries about any additional alcohol we purchased. The trips we went on were interesting and well explained in the brochure we had previously selected from. We did have to change one of our daily trips but this was dealt to quick and efficiently by the desk staff. We also required a health professional at one point and this was arranged for us as well. The Cruise Director for our trip ( Kane) was fantastic, an entertainer and organiser you should be proud of. Thank you again Viking for the fun and adventure, the wonderful new friends we met, the places we explored and the service we received. We ventured from the furtherest part of the world to sail with you and despite the hiccups would definitely do so again. We returned home with fun filled stories and have already passed on to others that they need to travel with you. Our next cruise is already booked!!!!! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had done the same cruise from the other direction, viz. Budapest to Amsterdam in October 2012, and enjoyed it so much we encouraged friends to go and we accompanied them. Unfortunately because of the the hot weather and lack of rainfall the Rhine and Danube were impassable in several spots. This required meeting the ship just past Cologne instead of at Amsterdam. The Viking staff were truly excellent in explaining the reasons for the problem, keeping passengers informed and arranging very pleasant alternate accommodation in Amsterdam. None of the scheduled visits/tours were missed but they did require bus rides to the various destinations. In mid-cruise we had to transfer to an identical ship again because of low water. Part of the pleasure of cruising for us is not having to unpack and repack suitcases every few days. This pleasure we had to forego, but it wasn't a serious problem. We were very pleased to receive an apology and a credit equal to 50% of the cost of the cruise toward a future cruise with Viking. Apart from the problems caused by Mother Nature to which cruises of all kinds are subject, this cruise met our expectations, which were high. We have already booked a future ocean cruise with Viking as a result. Our experiences with the staff and life on board were uniformly excellent. We particularly enjoy the fact that there are almost no extra costs unlike almost all other cruise lines. Read Less

From the moment you board the ship you will be treated to an amazing experience. The staff was exceptional...from the room steward to the wonderful restaurant staff. Every day is a treat as a tour quide will accompany you on a great excursion. The afternoons included interesting lectures given by artisans, the ship captain, professors from universities and a few days of cruising the beautiful rivers dotted with picturesque riverbanks. The program director, Wez, worked tirelessly to ensure that all on board had a wonderful experience...in spite of two seamless ship swaps due to low water levels on the Danube. I would also like to commend Mae and Normandy for their exemplary service among the restaurant waitstaff of the Viking Gefjon...and also server Edison on the Viking Ve. The meals were delicious...from the best breakfast menu to all of the regional selections that are offered daily. Be sure and stop at the coffee and cookie station located by the library. Would definitely recommend the Viking River Cruises to be added to your bucket list! Read Less

Food not as flash on coach tours and wine and beer not included but half the price for a month. Will stick with coach tours. On our first Viking Cruise we had Viking make all our flight arrangements and this worked with out flaw, perfect, easy, zero problems. Yes I did check to see if I could get better connections, and cheaper fares on my own, I could not. Using Viking Air is the way to go. As a yacht captain, I can see well past any ship board facade, and it is clear to me Viking is the clear stand out in European river cruises. This conclusion is after 3 cruises with Viking and the opportunity to view other river cruise operators close up (as in rafted up alongside). What makes Viking stand out? The largest fleet, this allows Viking to accommodate their passengers when things go wrong, such as low/high water, mechanical failures, by having enough long ships to substitute ships and not have to cancel the entire voyage. Viking has the newest ships and built to a very high standard. The interiors are well appointed in a modern tasteful fashion. The staterooms are very nice, and the heated bathroom floor is one of my favorite things. The dining, I personally am pretty easy to please in this department. but I'll give a 1-5 rating, 5 being the best. Menu 5 Presentation 5 Taste 3.5-4.0 There are no "5's" on board any ships (fresh vs refer/frozen) Waitstaff 6 best in the business, (remembered my name by second day). Honestly I am amazed how well the food service operates, seamlessly serving 200+ people in less than 90 minutes. Among the ship board activities I really enjoyed the "Port Talk" and there were some fun night time games in the lounge ( I did win a bottle of champagne, for coming in last place in the trivia game one night). Not going to candy coat some of the ports, I understand first hand how the preferred dockage/berth may not always be available, and that there will be times multiple ships will have to "raft up" (obscuring your stateroom view) to make port. That is just the way it is, in certain cases you may have pass through other ships to go ashore. The up side for me was that passing through other non Viking river boats assured me that I had made the best choice going with Viking. The shore excursions, only wish we could do them all. We did have one tour guide that was not ready for prime time, but one bad apple does not spoil the bunch. We traveled as husband and wife, no children and toured Italy and Greece after our cruise. As of now we are planing to do a Viking river cruise every year. Read Less

We had heard from our neighbors and friends about their fantastic experience with Viking River cruises and had been on our ever expanding bucket list for "to do" things. We finally did it in June of 2018. It was a 15 day Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. It turns out that the cruise turned out to be better than our extremely high expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality, service, and the worry free cruise. The crew was fantastic. It felt like we were with our loving and caring extended family. The included excursions were more than we would have asked for. It was convenient and educational having not to worry about what to do and what it is going to cost. The food was exceptional with compliments of wine and beer. We are taking another Viking Cruise on Dec 13 to Cuba & Panama, and one in May of next year. This was a dream come true bucket list trip that we were fortunate to be able to do with good friends. We were NOT disappointed. The ship was lovely. The staff-delightful. Program Director Wez was a delight! So helpful and fun and talented. Food very good (Chef Jan should have his own cooking show!!!). Special meal representing each port was great fun. Our head waiter, Normandy, was so attentive. Loved being able to have a quiet continental breakfast out on deck too. That was a great option. Ports and tours perfect. Evening special entertainment events were really enjoyable. The day tour guides were so knowledgeable! Would have liked more narration on areas we were cruising past while on board though. And were not happy with tipping being requested (and somewhat pushed by front desk staff) with special envelopes rather than included in the overall price of the cruise. I highly recommend this trip. We are actually looking at doing it again but in the opposite direction. We were in the lowest level on the boat and the rooms were fantastic. Good sized closets, excellent shower, fridge, television and comfortable beds. Also very nice shower products (leave your toiletries at home) Viking is very organized from the time you embark to disembark. I would look on the television every morning to view the menus for the day so I could toss around what I was going to order as many days it was hard to chose and everything sounded so good. Chef Jan would come to the lounge every evening before dinner and give the chefs recommendations and explain how the food was prepared. Chef Jan also had a sense of humor. The lounge had music every happy hour and then again at 9:00 pm for dancing. they would change the themes nightly from Country and Western, Classical, and Rock and Roll etc. There was always something to do in the afternoons after our daily tour. There was an afternoon English tea one day and another the Chef demonstrated on how to make strudel. The waiters in the dining room and the lounge were excellent. They quickly learned your tastes to be able to recommend a wine. We purchased the Silver Spirits package in our own currency and it was well worth it. The shore excursions are well managed and there was never any line ups to wait in.We met lots of very nice people and we now have new friends. Another great thing about this trip is there are no children allowed. Viking is there to great you at the airport to take you to your hotel or boat and there at the end for your return home. We totally enjoyed our experience from the beginning to end. Thanks in large part to the crew and our amazing Cruise Director Wez. He was funny, well organized, creative, and attentive. Amazed someone so young handles the older cruisers with such ease. The Captain and his entire crew were gracious, warm, and friendly. They were obviously good at what they do. It was apparent that they all enjoyed what they do and too great pride in their service of the passengers, our safety and comfort, and in keeping the ship in excellent condition. The food was plentiful, loved the variety, and was always well prepared. Our Executive Chef Jan, was hysterically funny, as well as a great leader for his crew. So many of the servers were above and beyond in their service as well as engaging and funny. Meal times were a delight! The shore excursions were well planned with local guides that provided fun little insights and most were humorous and helpful. The ship was gorgeous, well maintained, clean, and bright and cheery. Our stateroom was well laid out even though it was a bit small. We had a small balcony which we enjoyed relaxing on many times. The cabin and bathroom were very clean and they were cleaned and refreshed 2 times each day. A big part of our enjoyment was the group of fellow passengers. We met some wonderful people that have become friends and we’ve had fun times nice we returned back to the United States. It was worth the money and we’ve booked a Viking Ocean Cruise in 2019! We have wanted to do a european river cruise for a very long time. The Budapest to Amsterdam cruise fit many of the countries we wanted to see. Viking picked us up at the Budapest airport and bussed us to the boat, no muss, no fuss. We found our cabin decorated in what I call Swedish modern, sleek and pleasing. We both loved the bathroom, the heated floor was well beyond what we expected. There are two eateries on board: the main dining room and the Aqauvit “cafe” at the bow of the boat. We ended up eating all breakfasts and most lunches at Aquavit because it was like eating at a sidwalk cafe except the sidwalk was the river. We could eat while watching, hearing, and smelling the surrounding countryside slide by. The main dining room was a great meeting place for dinner. The large tables resulted in seatings of groups of people that started the meals as strangers and ended up as friends. Most nights the main dining room offered aregional menu in addition to the standard menu. The Regional menu offered a chance to try local cuisine that would never be available at home. In most cases it was a pleasant surprise. The on board entertainment was uniformly excellent. The two person lounge combo was thoroughly professional and had a breathtakingly broad repetoire. Viking brought in opera singers and a glassblower for unexpected types of entertainment. There were frequent historical seminars, usually as preludes for the next day’s excursions which greatly helped understand the history behind the excursion. When we booked this cruise we were aware that the Viking river cruises were ranked number one. We quickly found out why. Everyone we encountered from the Captain, to our room Steward, to the restaurant and bar serving staff, to the deckhands, were always pleasant, always had a smile, and always tried their utmost to be helpful. The crew made this a gold star cruise. The shore excursions added the local touch that we were looking for. The tour guides hired by Viking were all local residents that had deep knowlege of the subject of the tour they were leading. Each of them had their own personal spin on the subject of their tour, which kept the tours from feeling “canned”. As a consequence, just about every tour contained information that would be hard to find in a history book. Fifteen days, five countries, sixty eight locks traversed, fourteen hundred pictures taken, a million smiles. Read Less

We travelled on Viking 3 years ago and our friends have heard all the stories. 2 of them asked if we wanted to go again with them from Budapest to Amsterdam and there was no hesitation, we accepted. Our only problem was getting to Budapest, we were delayed leaving by 2 hours due to weather, and so missed our connection but we were rebooked on 2 new connections and arrived only 4 hours later than scheduled, though our luggage didn’t make it. No problem, the front desk was on it, I was on it from another angle and by morning we had our bags. The crew was fantastic. They got us robes, slippers, and toiletries as we didn’t know if/when the bags would show up. They also threw in free laundry while the bags were missing, though we didn’t need it in the end. Viking cabins are small, even the “larger” cabins, but that's OK because you are not in there except to sleep, change clothes, and shower. The lounge and sun deck are where most time is spent when on board and are more than adequate for the 190 or so guests on a full cruise. We had 178 on ours, which included a crew from Discovery Channel doing a show on our ship, to be aired in the fall. We were on the top deck of rooms and had a balcony, barely wide enough for a chair but still useable. We tried to sit at the same table every night or close by so that our wait staff could get to know us, and they did. Always friendly, efficient, and eager to get something for us. The food was very good and reasonable portions, though our chef tended to make dry cakes and other baked desserts. A fellow passenger mentioned it to him and he ignored her, blamed it on the recipes, yeah right. The bartenders in the lounge were also excellent. The waiters in the lounge were mixed. One lady and one guy were good but the others were hit or miss, frequently miss. Get to know your bartenders, you might find free wine/beer times with lunch and dinner get extended a bit and if you get them to join in late night dancing, they can be really fun and generous on your next pour of a drink at the bar. I usually don’t go for a lot of the entertainment, but it wasn’t bad and several local entertainers were brought on to give us local tastes in music or activities. There was a free walking tour included at every stop, which we found adequate. Our friends did some extra excursions that they enjoyed, but one of them was 4 hours each way on a bus so it was a long day for them whereas we relaxed after our walk and enjoyed the scenery and the quiet. We booked the trip a year in advance, and did get a more expensive room, but it was worth it. Breaking it down to a daily cost and remembering that our air fare was included, it wasn't that bad for a 2 week cruise that included excursions, food and some drinks, travel to each port, and hotel all on 1 ship. We each got a $100 voucher for another cruise, which turns into a $200 on board credit when we use it. No expiration date, transferable or refundable. You can’t go wrong. Also, nobody under 18 on board, so it's quieter than some cruises we have been on. My favorite? Cruising the Wachau Valley and the Rhine with all the castles, almost a new castle around every curve on the Rhine. DW Read Less

My partner was a "newbie" and not sure that he would like a cruise. So, our friends and I suggested a Viking River Cruise and it proved to be an excellent introduction to the cruising experience. The cruise itself is a premium experience. We sailed from Budapest to Amsterdam and everything conspired to make it a memorable trip, including the weather. The cities along the route were all interesting and the included excursions were well-passed and staffed by locals who knew their locations intimately. The ship was top-notch, with excellent dining choices and pleasant on-board entertainment. One highlight was the cruise through the Wachau Valley of the Rhine where, for 4.5 hours, we sailed past many river towns and hilltop fortresses and castles with a delightful intermittent commentary by the program director. My partner is now ready to try a sea cruise, though he still wants to stay close to land. So, we're considering a North Sea cruise. Read Less
