We booked a 50 day cruise with Cunard Queen Mary 2 primarily to visit Petra, Rome plus about 20 other countries. The cruise departed Feb 23 from Shanghai to April 14 in South Hampton. While boarding in Shanghai, I was bumped by a luggage handler and my knee was scratched. The scratch became infected by Feb 27 and I had to take antibiotics for the whole cruise, so we never saw any of the sights we intended. After the cruise, we submitted our claim to a Cunard cruise claims adjuster because I needed to continue antibiotics April 15 to June 12. The Cunard claim adjuster gave us a runaround and distorted facts to avoid paying any fair compensation. I wrote the President of Cunard asking to be treated fairly in compensation, and were emailed in return indicating since we purchased our cruise in the USA he could do nothing! I wondered why they are marketing in the USA if they cannot treat folks that book in the USA fairly in compensation. I must say the Cunard medical staff is excellent, but their onboard antibiotic selection is limited. The exercise facilities are limited for a person with a knee infection caused by Cunard. The pools are beautiful and clean, but someone with a leg infection can not use the pools or hot tubs. From the stern from the 11th floor or above, one can see 3 pools on 3 different levels. Dining room food is limited quality but good variety; and deserts are for a European palate. With my leg infection we were forced to do things we normally would not do, viz. painting, read and gamble. The casino has really nice folks working there and the odds aren't bad as my wife and I bot one several times. The art classes or lessons was a fantastic experience. On level 2 at the pursers desk or level 3 at the shops the central foyer is a classic 0 the flowers display is the nicest we have ever seen on any ship. Read Less

We selected this cruise specifically for the stability of the QM2 and Cunard's reported quality. We had never been on a long cruise previously and didn't know if we would even like the experience. In the event, we loved it and have indeed book further world cruises with Cunard for 2020 and 2021. You need to book much earlier than we expected to even get on one of their ships! All Grill Suites for both were sold out while we were still on the ship in April. We appreciated most of the shows, not all to our taste or to the same quality, but there was something for everyone and we certainly enjoyed over 80% of the performances. The Guest Speakers were a real highlight and most were exceptional. Although the tours were expensive, they were well organised and Graham the tour Manager did an exceptional job presenting and "selling" the various tours. Again, another asset to the business as he has a real wealth of experience. On the down side, there were rather more medical emergencies among the ageing guests on board than we had expected and we had to make a few non schedule stops to facility these. Cunard however handled these really well and we never missed a planned port of call or were late arriving. We also though a good number of people complained and moaned a LOT more than we would have expected. There appeared to be a sizeable cohort of "professional moaners" on board, which we found hard to understand given the luxurious surrounding, excellent food and simply magnificent service. I wouldn't care but it always appeared to be people less use to these things who complained the most. In short, we loved the experience, which certainly exceeded our expectations. Expensive? Yes, very. BUT who goes on a world cruise at this level and expects it to be cheap? Well done to all the staff on QM2. Read Less

Booked this cruise for two reasons, the itinerary and to see for ourselves if Cunard is what they say they are. The itinerary was great, Cochin excepted but we expected that. We had three complaints about this cruise, first of which was the visas for India. We had no plans to go ashore in Cochin but was told that we must have full tourist visas otherwise we would not be able to embark the ship in Singapore. Due to a lack of time we had no choice other than to use Cunards intermediary CIBT visas, at a significant cost to us. Due to a lack of communication it turned out the visas were not required pre cruise. We watched people board the ship who had no visas. Cunard have since agreed to reimburse us, but only because we complained. If you were on this ship and had a similar experience then complain, they won't contact you! Secondly the stateroom------ We were in 13024 which is a club balcony cabin. The room itself was very nice with a roomy balcony and was well maintained by the steward, thanks Salvi.There is tea making facilities in the room which is always a bonus. Further to the stateroom there is significant vibration most of the time which is apparent to both port and starboard. Theses staterooms were a recent addition made during the last refurbishment. Cunard of course are aware of this and I'm told by a guest services executive that they are looking at ways of factoring it into the brochure stateroom descriptions. Too little to late for us, Cunard got our money, my wife got no decent sleep. As a matter of interest the vibration has nothing to do with sea conditions as it was present when the ship was on its mooring lines. Finally, the food--------I was served raw ( yes you read it right, raw) chicken with bloody juices running from it! As you can imagine there was mayhem, the servers, maitre d, chef and executive chef all arguing amongst themselves as to who was at fault, with fellow diners looking on in disbelief. I left the dining room and went for a meal. The outcome of this was that I was not allowed to make a formal complaint at the pursers desk,I wanted a case number so that I could take the matter up when I got home but was refused and told to drop the matter.I was given a complimentary meal in the Italian specialty restaurant, special it wasn't. Since being home Cunard agree that we have had a shocking experience with the three complaints and have offered us 20% of the cost of the cruise plus reimbursement of the cost of the visas. Is this commensurate with the cruise experience ? The service in the dining room was, we found, fine. The food in general in the dining room was adequate, but no more. A bit hit and miss. The service in the bars was, at times dreadful. Gone are the days of being escorted to seat and waited on for a drink, like it used to be. More often than not I got my own drinks at the bar and carried them back to where we were sitting. Staff work hard enough but there just isn't enough of them. The experience made me that I was at home in my local Wetherspoons. The entertainment for us was a mixed bag with no hint of a wow factor. The two productions shows were very poor and most certainly the entertainment was geared toward classical recitals and ballroom dancers with some jazz thrown in. The resident orchestra was very good as was the dance band. All in all we found the entertainment to be low key and not to our taste. Some of the sea day lectures were good though, as was the planetarium. Shore excursions were robbery but they are everywhere. The price of drinks was also robbery but we have seen worse, can't remember where. In the end we were glad to get home. Would we cruise Cunard again? Highly unlikely. For the life of me I can't see any evidence of a White Star experience, perhaps it's reserved for the grills? As for us we will continue cruising but methinks we will body swerve Cunard in the future. Read Less

Holiday of a lifetime planned for early in our retirement. Negatives - health and safety issues. 1) We question the practice of the same member of staff responsible for cleaning the cabin also being responsible for bringing coffee/milk new cups etc to the stateroom.i.e. the steward comes straight from cleaning the bathroom/toilet to delivering new cups/coffee/milk etc. This is not the fault of our steward who was friendly, helpful and attentive. More it is an organizational fault instigated by management and should be rectifed by them. 2) Many of the tables in King's Court are unstable. Not only does this make eating a meal somewhat unpleasant, but one table we sat at was so unstable that we spilt a cup of scalding hot coffee. Given the status and calibre of QM2 it seems unbelievable that this easy to solve problem had not been rectified by the end of the voyage despite a number of complaints from passengers. 3) The facilities at the guest laundrettes are woefully inadequate for the number of passengers -18 washing machines (when they are all working) for over 2,500 passengers. The numbers tell the story. The situation was exacerbated because the cost of having the laundry done by the ship was so high - at the cheapest it was two dollars per item. This situation bought out the worst in some passengers with angry outbursts and aggressive behaviour. Our suggestion that the cost (of having the laundry done by the ship) be brought down to alleviate the situation was rejected. Positives - 1) Stateroom was large, comfortable, well decorated and on a day to day basis worked very well. We loved the balcony which was spacious enough to sit out in comfort and afforded us some spectcular sights. 2) Ship was spectacular with a wide range of activities although we did find that many started too late in the evening for us at 9.45 p.m. Day time activities during days at sea were good - regular bridge, art lessons, craft activities etc. and some one off events including a passenger choir, line dancing and even a class where you could learn how to juggle. There were lots of famous and informative speakers giving talks and presentations. The swimming pools, games room, library, gym etc. meant there was plenty to do on board ship and most of these facilities were well run. However some of the teachers were not up to scratch - notebly the first bridge teacher we had at the start of the cruise, and the art teacher who was very knowleageable, but had a poor approach to her students and who could not actually paint very well. This opinion is based on the paintings done by her that she showed us to demonstrate techniques. 3) The staff on board ship were smart, attentive and generally efficient. Many went out of their way to help - the deck hand who climbed the ship's railing to retrieve my husbands hat, the World Voyage conceierge who was so much help when we had to go home early because of illness. Her assistance was of real value and we cannot thank her enough. The disembarkation was as effiicient, fast and as comfortable as it was possible to be given the circumstances. 4) The ship's shore excursions were varied and well organized given the very real constraints experienced in some ports, but we did find the cost of these to be high. We ended up using other cruise excursion operators and found these to be less expensive and more geared to our individual wishes. 5) Food was generally good, varied and there were a wide range of venues although some incurred additional charges.The Brittania Restaurant served lovely food - I can reccommend the ice cream!. We also took advantage of the free room service - breakfast on our balcony was particularly welcome on the days we went ashore on excursions. Overall we had a fabulous time, and were particularly impressed with the care taken by Cunard staff in difficult circumstances. Nothing was too much trouble when there was a problem,evident in the care taken of us when I was ill, which was second to none. The ship is magnificent, lots of stylish and attractive areas with the WOW factor. It attracted a lot of attention in virtually every port we visited. A trip to remember. Read Less

First time on QM2...Arrived Dubai by air and spent 3 nights in JW Marriott (outstanding hotel)and had an "evening with Katherine Jenkins" which was excellent...did several private tours within Dubai...very good value. Overall impression of Dubai was Very good and would go again for a holiday. Boarding QM2 was not good and waited for over 6hrs for our luggage to come to our stateroom. As we were in the Queens stateroom on deck10, unable to attend our first lunch as we had no change of cloths.....shorts not accepted for lunch. Went ashore (privately) in Muscut. The trip round Yemen into Red sea was uneventful, thank goodness, although QM2 was well prepared.... Aquaba and Petra came next....outstanding trip and well worth going all this way for.... The 12 hrs though the Suez canal was another highlight of this trip...(think even better than the Panama canal)....Onto Limasul (Cyprus) and Messina and Naples, where we again went on a private trip to Sorrento, so had the day to ourselves...Then onto Lisbon and finally Southampton. Disembarking was another nightmare, created by Cunard. .Being on the Queen's suite, no priority given to us. They wanted to wait till ALL baggage we in hall before we could go down, this meant a huge jam in hall....top Suites should have been released much earlier..... Having done a World cruise on QE 2 yrs ago, we expected better from this cruise.... Entertainment was poor to very poor and we walk out twice.....only one lecture was of a high standard, John Peters....the others not so good. The Royal Theatre was not that good. No seats are bookable, so you had to rush your dinner to be seated 1 hr before the shows to get a good seat. The seats are like a 'big couch" with no arms.....not very comfortable either. The Pursers office seemed not to care about their jobs very much and on the 3 occasions I used them, found them rude....it was as though they were talking down to the older passengers.....ave. age must have been 65.....I found this attitude very concerning. Our Queen's stateroom was excellent, and made up for other short comings of this cruise. Very big with plenty of room and cupboards....Balcony was huge and excellent for sunbathing. The Grills dining couldn't be faulted either. Excellent choice of menu and service outstanding. This cruise left us with the impression , that Cunard were at the end of their World cruise and wanted to fill up the ship from Dubai with 900 people....that meant entertainment and ports of call suffered.....even the Captain, who was retiring, seemed to have lost interest. The QM2 has just been 're-mastered', unfortunately they should have looked beyond the new furnishings Value for money , this was a poor cruise and we would not travel on the QM2 again but stay with the QE instead....we have already cancelled our cruise on QM2 for 2018 and will go in 2019 on QE......speaking to our fellow passengers in the "Grills" they too had the same opinion, that QE was better. We booked an excursion to Paphos in Cyprus. The description of the tour which appealed to us was 1. Taken to Paphos and have three hours free time to explore independently or 2. Visit the Villa and see the mosaics and the tombs of the kings and lastly 3. Take a stroll along the harbour. However, we were given no choices at all! We were dropped off at the harbour and left there. There was only a few restaurant and tacky gift shops. I was in a wheelchair and on 24/7 oxygen. We tried to find some shops but it was a long trek and we only found a very small mall and went back to the harbour and waited there for a coach to return. We put in an official complaint at this persons desk when we returned and received 10% refund which was an absolute joke we had wasted our money and our day in Cyprus. The literature is completely misleading and if we had known what was in store we still could of taken the free shuttle bus or gone to Limassol where apparently the guests had a fantastic time which made us even more fed up ..... I keep trying to get in touch with the excursions specialist team as we was advised to do once we got back to UK but I have had no luck getting through so needed to vent my feelings somewhere. As for the cleanliness of the newly refurbished Kings Court, we found it dirty, especially the walls next to the tables, the skirting, the windows. Infact, a lot of the communal areas needed TLC. They were cleaned but the staff were very lethargic and did everything at a snail's pace and didn't seem to take any pride in the fact that they were on a Cunard ship, although they cleaned they didn't clean the edges or the corners. Just been on board for 10 days and was pleased to get off, personally I found the food not to be 5 star, the buffet area, although the food was better, I likened it to a motorway dining area, with the seating arranged so people were walking around you while eating. We wanted to do our own thing when we docked instead of organised tours, the tour people were not interested in the least in helping. I said at one time we wanted to go snorkelling and did they have any information, I was told in no uncertain terms I would have to ask when we went ashore. There were no information leaflets of the places we were visiting, it was organised tours at expensive rates or nothing. The last 2 days the ship was in lockdown as there was 120 crew members and a few passengers went down with norrovirus, an ambulance was called when we went into port, but this was all kept quiet to the oncoming passengers. The entertainment was pretty poor. This was by far the worst cruise I have been on, this was my first and last time with Cunard. Read Less

I chose the QM2 because of its reputation and a desire to sail on her. It was the smoothest sailing I have ever experienced. The ship is spacious. The stateroom was very comfortable. QM2 is a true ocean liner and a grand ship. The pre cruise package purchased through Cunard was dreadful because the transfer from Singapore's Changi airport to the Fairmont hotel didn't happen - nobody was at the airport to pick us up. After an international flight we had to walk all over the airport trying to find someone who could answer our question 'where is our transfer?'. We ended up getting a taxi to the Fairmont Hotel where we were persuaded to pay additional money to upgrade our pre-paid room. Nobody from Cunard or the transfer personnel contacted us to apologise for the confusion. We were told somebody would pick our bags up next morning and deliver them to another hotel where we had to walk to and claim our bags before boarding the transfer. Unimpressed with this chaos we decided to pay for a taxi to port ourselves. Cunard have never offered any compensation despite the matter being reported to them. The room at the Fairmont was lovely and we had use of the club lounge for food, drinks and breakfast. This privilege was only because I paid to upgrade as otherwise we had to walk to another hotel for breakfast. Embarkation was a chaotic nightmare as the computers broke and thousands of people waited hours to embark. As far as the experience on the Queen Mary 2 I have to say it was wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the viewing window to the bridge. The dining experiences were wonderful and the food delicious. The captain was a gentleman. After exploration of the QM2 we were not that impressed with the kennels as the outside area seemed insecure in terms of fencing and it looked like some dogs could just jump the railing. We travelled through high risk waters (pirates) without incident and there was a black out each night with curtains drawn. Yet I had to alert the reception that the outside lighting / ship's night lights were still on so I think those pirates would still have seen us! There was a viral outbreak during the cruise which made things unpleasant as it is with all cruises that have these outbreaks. Yes I would love to travel on the Queen Mary 2 again as it was a grand experience. Read Less

This 7 night cruise was our 4th time aboard Mary, and our 5th week in terms of days. We were keen to see the changes made during the refit last year as we had spent 16 nights on her just prior (BNE/HKG) Boarding at HKG was great, we were in the 4th group called and were on board by 1pm and by 2pm we had squared all our clothes away and were enjoying the complementary sparkling wine on our balcony. Refit Changes - As mentioned by many others, the carpet is a little odd, not the design (I think the starburst design is good) but mainly the faded aspect of one side of the passageways. The Carinthia lounge is much better than the Wintergarden but alas, we liked it before because it was so quiet and now it is very popular, so that is a success for the ship, we still spent a fair bit of time there for lunch. The new deck 13 cabins provided a "deck 14" viewing option which is awesome (see photos), gives a really good aspect without detracting from Mary's overall look.We talked to one lady who was in the new single cabins and she offered us a look, these (as expected) were fantastic, lovely marble bathroom, king single bed and a chaise lounger to look out the large window, the wife and I wish we could book one of these for us as a couple - so roomy! Food possibly was not quite as good as previous voyages, we dined at the Veranda and that was top notch quality, ambiance still poor as there were only a few diners, Cunard need to reduce the price to get more people dining, last year it was USD50 for us both in Todd English, now the V charges USD50 each and I dont think we would go back again unless it was bustling. Smoker's still occupy a small area on the main pool deck 8 as well as deck 7, I think they should be confined to deck 7 as aft as possible. Our cabin being balcony deck 11 was terrific, bed just as relaxing as ever, loved the balcony, hopefully the next refit will see the bathroom improved which is now a little dated, especially seeing the new single stateroom bathrooms. Our only port stop was Laem Chabang and we did not feel like a long bus trip to Bangkok and wanted to maximise our time on the ship.Overall another great trip on Mary, shame it was so short but this was a great value trip for us and looking to book our next trip to continue our round the world trip on her, one sector each year..... We chose this ship for a very special holiday. It was our 55 wedding anniversary and my wife birthday and my 80th. We paid top money for a good kabin.We paid £16.500.00 For the trip. Flying to Hong Kong and sailing back to Southampton.The facilities on the ship where all overcrowded. The buffet in the day was good that is when you could find a table. The evening meals were very poor. All the excursions where expensive The drinks were.The was an outbreak of the novo virus which I unfortunately court. We also spoke to many other passengers who had paid a lot less than We paid.0verall we did not like this ship at all. We would not recommend this ship to anyone. When we wrote to Cunard they never even had the decency to reply.This was a waste of time and money and we will never use Cunard again. Read Less

We have cruised 5 times on other lines but this was a "Bucket List" cruise for us. We felt we were very lucky to get any disability cabin, let alone in Princess Grill. Embarkation in Sydney was fairly smooth, and we were on board in about 30 minutes, with our luggage waiting for us at the suite. We have a small electric wheelchair which is the same size as a normal wheelchair, but entry through the door was so tight that we constantly hit door frame or wardrobes getting in or out. It required a difficult "S" turn to get in, due to free standing wardrobes, in front of the entry, which were mainly unsuitable for disabled persons, being nearly all shelves with only one small hanging rail in one robe unit (no walk-in robe, as pictured online). The accessible bathroom was OK, but access past there, to the rest of the suite, was not wide enough for the wheelchair to pass. Space between beds and lounge furniture, chair & table was too narrow to get to the second bed or balcony and the lack of space also meant that there was no access to lounge or chair seating without moving furniture. The TV was also on the wall behind the lounge, so not view-able, except from the beds. Power points were also badly placed. We had 3 at the writing desk, but none at the fridge & mini bar cabinet where the kettle and coffee machine were positioned. These had to be moved to the desk, to be used. Bedding however, was very comfortable. In all, this cabin, sold as an "accessible Princess Grill" was false, and when we checked a non-accessible suite, it was the same size and space as ours, but with a walk-in robe next to the bathroom and direct access down the passage into the cabin. We spoke to the Grills Concierge about lack of accessibility in cabin and also later, to an officer in the purser's office, but despite their promises to respond within the day, neither of them got back to us for the duration of the cruise. The other problem for wheelchair access was to the outside decks. All door frames we encountered, had no ramps, but more like a house wood door frame, with vertical edges. All were very jarring to cross and some were too high for the front wheels of the small electric chair to climb, so the chair had to be manually pulled backwards (with help from other passengers to hold doors), to get back inside. This difficulty, and possible chair damage, effectively prevented wheelchair use on the upper decks for us. Although the lifts were small, access within the ship was generally no problem, and while there always seems to be some people who show no regard for disabled, the majority of passengers and crew were considerate & helpful. The entertainment we saw was, in general "average" and not as good as on other lines we have previously cruised with. We were unable to take the tender to Port Arthur, but went ashore in Hobart, where special disabled access busses were provided to transfer to and from town. Meals in the King's Court buffet were mainly average and selections seemed to be minimal, compared to some other cruise lines. On a good note, the quality of meals and service in the Princess Grill dining room was superb. We were seated on a table of eight and our dining companions were great company. They were very friendly, well travelled and we always had interesting conversations which sometimes extended our dinners to around 10pm! Would we sail with Cunard again? No. Lack of accessibility in the Suite and Cunard's lack of response to the issues, made for a disappointing experience. Read Less

After raising my concerns on Face book and twitter I was informed that they were experiencing technical difficulties at check-in so could only apologise for the inconvenience. To be assured they are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible however the port representatives should be able to provide further updates. We were sent into a reception centre with in adequate refreshments and space. After some 6 hours we arrived at our cabin. The theme continued on our 29 night cruise so. If you’re going on Cunard expect plenty of apologies and so sorry for any inconvenience. Patience you will need that too. I will go on another cruise with them Not. It took three days for them to finally get in touch. They clearly are not interesting in trying to resolve matters in favour of the customer. Just sweep them under the carpet which is very short sited and eventually they will go out of business, with such a narrow view. Dining was like a free for all on deck 7 little bit of a ruby scrum. The food was repetitive, cold at times. The Britannia restaurant was much better and the quality and service was pleasant. The ship had an atmosphere i would alike to a library at sea. Entertainment at night was ok up till 22.30Hrs then everyone would rush to bed. It’s the ideal floating care home maybe something to think about in later years but not at the moment. Wine was expensive like the drinks poor quality much better to buy off shore and take on board then you can buy quality. Read Less

we chose this ship to celebrate our Diamond wedding anniv on the day of departure (I was actually born on the day QM was launched) and its juicy itinerary. .having cruised about 120 times all around the world the three places that had most appeal were first timers for us Okinawa, Taiwan & Brunei persuaded us to pay up 16 months before cruise commenced. imagine our horror when we received an email on Xmas Eve cancelling all 3 ports of call---yes 2 weeks before boarding at Southampton with no offer of cancellation. the overall cruise was immensely disappointing and yes we feel it was poor value for what we paid (and are still paying the remortgage) entertainment was banal,repetitive & frankly boring.-- hygiene standards were abused, food in the Britannia was just acceptable, in the King`s Court unacceptable ,duplicate bridge (which interested me) was disorganised,chaotic and a shambles. embarkation at Capetown was as usual an utter disgrace, wine prices,excursion charges and quality were unjustifiable, port agents recommended by Cunard for emergency were unavailable all the issues were brought to the attention of senior staff on board and despite promises nothing was ever heeded. care for the infirmed in ports of call was non sympathetic..communication with Cunard is an established horror story and they confirmed this status to Maril & myself. they just ignore you knowing their ship will always be full because it is the QM2. the Purser, Mr Henry Wasserman, took devious measures to avoid even talking to us although we were spending 100 nights on board and were top category Cunarders.. we requested at booking for Southampton to Dubai quote. Cunard insisted for their convenience to divide this into 3 separate cruises which was more expensive and far more inconvenient for us. even the Hotel Manager Mr D Shepherd admitted this was totally unnecessary as he agreed that ourtreatment on board was way below standard a great disappointment overall with many special moments. if we can help anybody call us at marilbrian@btinternet.com Read Less

About 2 years back I developed a desire to sail on the QM2. 50% of my friends who had been on the QM2 loved it and 50% hated it. Because of this I chose a short 7 day cruise from Sydney, Australia down to Tasmania and back to Brisbane, Australia, in February 2017. If it was not good, then I could endure 7 days. It was, in fact, very enjoyable. So much so, that we have booked two more cruises on the QM2. November around the Caribbean and 43 days in January 2018 from Cape Town to Brisbane. Our embarkation in Sydney was so quick and flawless. We were in our cabin very quickly. Far more efficient than on any of the other 14 cruise ships that we have sailed on. We had a balcony cabin on Deck 11. It was spacious and well laid out. We could not fault anything here. When we set out to explore the ship we were astounded by the size of it. Although it carried 2,600 passengers, because of the size, most lounge/bar areas were not at all crowded. Many lounge areas would only have 10 to 15 people in them. The service from every crew member was outstanding. The dining experience in the Britannia Restaurant was equal to any other cruise ship we have been on and we could not fault the quality of the food. The evening entertainment was quite good although we have experienced better on 2 or 3 other cruise ships. On the down side, there were 3 things that could easily be improved. There was always a long queue at the concierge desk due to only half of the service stations being manned at any one time. On the last two days of our cruise we had almost no hot water in our shower and on the last day we had NO shower water at all. Probably due to being on Deck 11. The first time I ordered two glasses of red wine it cost me US20. About $28 Australian. Money is not a problem, but, being Australians, we have an abhorrence to being ripped off. Which this certainly is. We bought no more drinks. So Cunard missed out by being greedy. Read Less

Embarkation took five to six hours no refreshments etc very poor service a lot of time wasted all stuffed into a small area poor communication .After receiving a reply, it seems they are not willing to take the welfare of the very charming elderly cruisers on the leg of the Cape town Australia and Singapore, only exploit them for the stiff upper lip. Cabin was very clean assistant was great. Food a poor choice Deck 7 very repetitive cold to Luke warm. Britannia restaurant staff exceptional, food choice very good. Atmosphere really I will think on that one. Deck 2 customer service let’s not grade that. Entertainment average. Ports of choice good shore excursions not very well supported fend for one’s self. Activities very limited. Wines considering the amount of people you see buying why they are on shore Poor quality high cost. Ship is solid; I like the painting of her deck 3 Britannia QM2 in port should say Queen Mary 2 but SAYS Qneen Mary 2 on the ship. Shame the artist didn’t notice that one. Good ship for a much older demographic 80’s plus I wish I had done my research before. Thought the Brand deflated that aspiration big time Read Less

Certainly nowhere near top quality. choice of dining is Britannia ( formal or semi formal.... jackets must be worn to respect other guests.. Cobblers people want to feel relaxed and it's never that in the dining room The only other free dining is the King's Court which offers 3 star buffet. Otherwise Cunard follow their policy of a great big hand in your pocket. Greedy,greedy company. Lidl wines at £5 sell at £32 on board after just 2 weeks menus are being repeated. Calibre of meats and fruit mediocre. One bright spark for us is a young Mauritius gent called Marco in Atlantic Room who has been great for us Bridge on ship has been as well organised as everything else, in other words -poor Lectures are superb. Tours seriously overpriced Cunard have been un contactable and unapproachable. eg we wrote to Cunard on 10th Dec 2016 and again 3rd jan 2017. We as Diamond Members (top category)have been totally ignored not even a short acknowledgement. So damned rude Entertainments Director is a pretty girl but quite honestly hopeless as ED Cunard have now lost Maril & myself as guests on their ships.the treatment of the elderly and informed is wicked and uncaring. Embarkation & disembarkation went smoothly, however the ship was so disappointing. Cunard market the Queen Mary 2 as the Flag Ship of their fleet. It was shabby and showing its age. In the Britannia Restaurant, The Golden Lion Pub and some heavy traffic thoroughfares their were holes in the floor which were carpeted over. If wearing high heels the shoe heel often would bury itself in the hole resulting in either walking out of your shoes or stumbling and almost falling over, surely this is a health & safety issue. The Kings Court Buffet felt grubby, the paint work was worn, marked and old fashion and the tables and chairs were cheap and nasty looking. It was also poorly designed, a long corridor with small eating areas duplicated on the port and starboard side with two self service buffets. After selecting your food the search was then on for a table which involved walking up and down the corridor in search for a table balancing a plate of food. Tea & Coffee was not served at your table as on other cruises we have been on. Again it involved walking back along the corridor to the self service coffee/tea station and retracing your steps to your table, quite often against the flow of the traffic. The food in the Kings Court was the virtually the same as the dinning room but tended to be hotter. In the Restaurants, generally, meals were not delivered on trays to a workstation in order to serve the whole table together. Meals were bought out individually and served, quite often with extraordinarily long delays resulting in guests either waiting for the whole table to received their meal or commencing when they received their meal so it would be hot, either way it didn't create a pleasant dining experience. It is widely expected wine will be more expensive than at home but the mark up was excessive. A cost of $47US was not unusual for a fairly ordinary bottle of wine. We had a Balcony Cabin. The furniture on the balcony was old & chipped, the paint work was patchy and peeling off. The Cabin was kept very clean & tidy by our lovely & cheerful Cabin Steward. The furniture was old and worn, the TV was old fashioned and small and reception and selection of programs poor. The hair dryer was pathetic, about a 1960s vintage, screwed into a draw restricting its use with extreme heat settings. The Cunard dancers and singers didn't seem to put on many shows compared to other cruises and certainly not spectacular or memorable. The comedians, magicians and guest singers were funny, entertaining and enjoyable. The Shore excursions were variable, generally good although a bit pricey. It was noticeable a lot of guest had coughs (dubbed the "Cunard Cough"), also during the cruise a Gastro Virus effected approximately half the guests. Average age of Cruisers about 80. We didn't experience the Speciality Restaurants as they didn't appear to be very special. A first for us, we usually enjoy trying these and have always enjoyed them on previous cruises. We have sailed on the Queen Elizabeth and enjoyed it however we felt so let down we will never sail Cunard again. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I liked the itinerary and one of the stops was Israel and wanted to see Jerusalem. I have sailed this similar cruise 2 years ago starting in Hong Kong but this time the embarkation was a nightmare. it was difficult to know who was in line for what. I think many of the 1,500 people thought the ship was going to leave without them the way they pushed and shoved to get in line to embark. Anyway we finally got on. Our cabin was ready and our stewardess, which was a pleasant change from having a man, was wonderful. She was like having a personal maid all to ourselves. The cabin although spotless was showing signs of wear and tear. The ship is going into dry dock this spring for a refit. It looks like they are making major changes for the better. The food in the main dining room was excellent as always. I think I only had one main course that was not up to par. Ditto the food in the Upstairs cafeteria, it was much improved, except for these darn steam table vegies. The waiters and waitresses all deserve a gold medal for putting up with some of the "Guests" . As I said to someone who was berating his steward for some minor detail," they are stewards not slaves". The entertainment, well what can I say, it was the same review shows I have seen several times on this ship. The first timers I am sure enjoyed the shows. Too many comedians for my taste but again that is a personal thing.. The ship set sail from New York at the beginning of January and everything was fine till we got to Dubai. A large contingent about 1, 500 got off and 1,500 new people got on and brought Nora virus with them. The people who were sick knew they had it before they got on but lied on the form you fill in before embarking hence it went through the ship like wild fire. This disrupted the whole itinerary as Oman would not allow us to dock nor would Jordan. My daughter who especially wanted and booked to go to Petra did not get there. There we are floating at sea waiting for our turn to go through the Suez canal, we were too early due to not stopping in Oman then too early again for the next port because we did not stop in Jordan. I think it was a good thing they did not say who the first people were that got sick as there might have been a massacre at sea. The tours in Vietnam were interesting and fun and the shopping is great at the large market in Ho Chi Minh , Ben Thanh market. If you don't like bargaining stay in the outer ring of the market where the prices are fixed. Then move in if you think you can bargain for a cheaper price. Bangkok is a must see as the palace is beautiful, but hope it is not too hot as there is not much shade. Cambodia, I did not take a tour just the Cunard bus into the town. It was interesting but the people although very friendly were living in poor conditions. The roads were unpaved in many places, the market although indoors lacked tables. Most of the goods were laid out on the floor. I think the area that the bus took us to was planned so that we would be forced to take a "TUK TUK" as we were inundated with them the minute the bus stopped. The drivers were so insistent to the point it was so unpleasant we got back on the bus to return to the ship. Malaysia is a shoppers paradise and Kuala Lumpur is easy to get around. Langkawi Island is beautiful. That is the island that the movie THE KING AND I was filmed.I did not take a tour this time as I had been there before but stayed at resort and enjoyed the day ashore. Colombo, Sri Lanka well what can I say. If you take the Cunard bus you will only be taken to three different tourist shopping traps with the same overpriced trinkets as all other tourist shops that are part of any tour be it Hong Kong, Bangkok, Israel, India, Egypt, or wherever you are. If the tour shows shopping you can bet it will be in a warehouse that is only for to sell to tourists. Locals do not shop there. The standard line of the tour guide will be that they know the best places and the other will only rip you off. As this was an extended tour with numerous stops I could go on but I am sure by now you will be bored reading this. I travelled with my adult daughter who had not been on a cruise before and she had a great time. We each did our own thing. In the evening we preferred the G37 nightclub rather than the staid Queens room where the dance floor was taken up with more professional type dancers rather than couples enjoying a twirl or shuffle around the dancefloor. There was lots of entertainment, small bands and piano players and singers in the evening, interesting lectures and speakers on numerous topics during the day. The ship was geared to a more mature group, I would say age 45 up to 95. Very few children on board although they have a very good children's programme. We disembarked in New York and almost everyone got off. There was the odd few that were returning to Southampton. It is a slow process as all the luggage has to be off first then we can go. A tip- if you are disembarking in New York, first, get in line for a porter and have him get your luggage. They have a fast track line through customs and immigration otherwise you will be struggling with you luggage in a very long line of people to clear immigration. It is ten dollars well spent. Reading other reviews, it seems that cruisers can be very tribal, “we love P & O, nothing else compares” or “RC is the best by far”. We have written this review with a totally open mind and reported on what was both our personal feelings and what we observed. If people want to either criticise or praise Cunard that is fine with us, as we are all different and have varying expectations from cruise companies. We booked our QM2 World Cruise about 18 months ago, as allocation of cabins for ‘all the way rounders’ is limited and having saved for many years we wanted to secure the best we could afford and enjoy the anticipation of the lead in period and what was before us. We booked a balcony on deck 11 well away from laundries, service doors etc (please bear this in mind when you make a booking, as these essential facilities can be noisy at times!). Cunard offered a very good early booking incentive, including a huge on board credit and free gratuities, this generosity has not been repeated in the 2017 and 2018 World Cruises! Unfortunately, after booking the cruise we found out the QM2 was due for a refit almost immediately after our return, which obviously made us very anxious (would they let it deteriorate below the standard reasonably expected). Therefore, we manged our expectations and were pleasantly surprised with the overall ambiance and condition we found. For those who are considering a long cruise there are additional issues and expenditure to consider not least the cost of Visa’s (cost us over £800.00) and insurance, particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition, which I think would cover a large percentage of 60’s. Not only was visiting countries with a high cost of health care a problem but the length of the journey was an issue with all polices I could find only going to a 90 day maximum, while this cruise like other world cruises are 120 days ! Boarding at Southampton Very easy to drop off luggage (15 items !!) but the queuing and booking in was unnecessarily chaotic but compared to an airport just about acceptable. Cabin and facilities Very spacious with adequate wardrobe space, WC and shower area a reasonable and adequate size, usual facilities some would expect (fridge, safe etc) but the TV was poor and very dated. The large double bed and linen were superb and extremely comfortable. Restaurants and general catering We used the Britannia Restaurant most but not all nights and found the food to be to a good standard, obviously some nights were better than others but overall we found it acceptable, as was the Kings Court Buffett once you got used to its challenging layout! We used Room Service quite a bit as we did not want to go out every night, again the speed and standard of service was great along with the quality of the food we ordered. Ports of call As there were so many and almost every one being unique and special in their own way, it would be difficult to do justice to the huge variation of cultures and experiences we were fortunate enough to encounter. So it would be easier and more informative if we said what we did not enjoy or ever intend to experience again. 1) Salvador South America, a robber’s paradise. Not only was there a underlying tension / apprehension walking around but at least 6 passengers, we know of were mugged by way of grabbing neck chains and other jewellery (I know they were warned not to wear such items) but the ones I came across were not ostentatious but seemed to be small and of personal significance. Anyway, putting that to aside, one instance I was witness to was a large (and very nice) American who was set upon by 3 in a public area very close to several police officers. After the incident the chap went up to the police to enquire why they did not help him and was told they did not seen anything! When he wished to make a crime report for insurance purpose, he was asked when the ship sailed, when they were told 4.30, they said it would not be possible to complete the crime report until 5.30. Now you know why crime statistics can be misleading! 2) Ushuaia Argentina. While a unique place (similar to Alaska in many respects) it was made clear that the Brits were not welcome. The captain had a hard time from the Port Authorities making his life as difficult as possible particularly with regard to tender space. While many (but not all) bars and restaurants would not serve Brits. Clearly the Falklands is still a big issue with these folks. My advice if you go there, is to stay on board you are not missing much and clearly they do not want our tourist dollars ! Shore Excursions. As ever we did not use the on-board offerings as they were poor value for money with many people returning from various trips complaining about duration, places visited and time available for sightseeing. We always suggested that they do the same as us and team up with another couple and get a local taxi (the ones outside the port gates are in our experience better value), it depends on the country but it will average about a $75 per couple. Our best and most memorable experiences were the Tut Tuts in Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Cochin (India). With Cochin being particularly amazing as we were shown numerous temples (from a local perspective), Meat and Fish markets, Elephants used for the religious festivals, eating with locals and observing how they fish and a commercial Dhobi (Indian laundry using stone troughs and bashing the washing against the trough and finishing with a charcoal heated iron) we have never seen such white laundry. We spent about 5 hrs on this Tut Tut for $30, everyone was very happy. So our message to those who are frightened about sightseeing other than using any ships poor value excursions, go for it, it is easier than you think, perfectly safe and timely for the ship if common sense is applied. Ships stability and overall sea journey As you would expect with the world’s only ocean liner, it was stable and a superb experience even in the rougher seas we experience in the North Atlantic and emerging into the Pacific Ocean after rounding the cape. Before we departed there was degree of hesitancy on our part with regard to the length of the cruise (120 days), as the longest we had previous undertaken was 27 days. Those fears of boredom and isolation were soon dispelled as we found the on-board activities, lectures and special interest groups filling our day. Learning to play Bridge and basic Mandarin are just 2 small examples along with plenty of opportunities for real down time either in the fantastic on-board Spa or reading via books from the exceptional good library or our Kindle. While the ship was full or just about full on every segment there was always a feeling of space and never being crowded, Steamers and Sun Loungers always available with plenty of room for personal relaxation (Dubai to UK excepted when the Brits got on, more about that later). While I know Cunard like many others add a 15% service charge, I have to say their generosity towards guests at the many and varied receptions we attended was second to none. Unlike another sister cruise company P & O who think a single glass of second rate wine and coloured cordial will suffice for such occasions (getting my tin hat on ready for the misguided P & O er’s to batter me !). While on board, we had a small emergency at 5am when a window on our cabin balcony shattered with a loud bang. The Purser’s office were up within minutes, we were quickly moved to a temporary cabin while the area was made safe and repaired (about 6 hours). Cause unknown but they suspect because it was so hot outside (about 98 degree’s) and relatively cold inside (we run AC, close to max chill) the uneven expansion of the glass caused the shattering! Cunard could not have done more to resolve this unexpected and rare occurrence. Overall the ambiance on board was very special with each segment / sector attracting different nationalities, so at different times we would have a high ratio of either American, Australian, Chinese, Asians etc. according to the segment we either sailed from or were heading for, all very friendly, well mannered (well almost all) and a joy to be with. But that all changed in Dubai when the Brits boarded bringing with them Norvo virus and general disruption on what had been a very pleasant and relaxing cruise. Reflecting upon this change, as it felt like we were on another cruise line / ship. I came to the conclusion that living here and experiencing the rudeness and selfishness on a day to day basis you tend to become immune to the un-pleasantries of life, it is only after having such a long and enjoyable break from such behaviour do you realise, as a county just how bad we are. Some small examples, to the best of my knowledge there was no Norvo Virus or other sickness that is passed by poor hygiene on board before Dubai. From Dubai I witnessed several examples of people (invariably a more mature age group) using the toilet and leaving without washing their hands (so did my wife) when challenged in a polite manner, we were either ignored or treated to some strong Anglo Saxon phrases ! This was compounded by many ignoring the long suffering staff offering sanitising liquid when entering the buffet area, again almost all the same age group. Many who had the virus would not stay in their room as instructed by the ships doctors thus the contamination continued a lot longer than it should have, spoiling the holiday for many innocent people, which had a knock on impact on the ports that would allow us in ( two did not). Again on the Brit theme, previous to Dubai you could sit on steamer or sunbed any time and where you wished. Then along comes the towel and book brigade who seem to take delight in spreading their belongings on these facilities and then wandering off for the best part of the day again spoiling things for others. While it was not a problem for the more experienced cruisers or those with some gumption who removed the items, if they wanted to rest, others understandably avoided such confrontations (as did the deck staff) ! To conclude, would we recommend Cunard, most certainly as this cruise not only met our expectations but far surpassed them. The QM2 is undoubtedly a special ship, although I accept it is not every ones cup of tea. As we stated at the beginning, this is what we found on that occasion and we have no ‘axe to grind’ or flag to fly as we have used about 7 cruise lines over recent years and they are all different, as we all are, Read Less

Our experience with QM2 world voyage from Southampton to Southampton 2015. "Welcome to our gracious Queen Mary 2 for her 2015 World Voyage" we read in the presentation letter we received from our exclusive World Voyage Concierge first day on board together with a champagne bottle. Gracious? Not anymore! Every people have different reasons to join a world cruise, but many enjoy visit different places without having to pack and unpack meanwhile you can: eat delicious and international dishes, made new friends , know new cultures, visit interesting places, workout in the gym, take a bath in the hot tub with sea views, swim in the pool with warm water, practice tennis in open deck court surrounded by the sea, enjoy different shows in the theatre , go to disco to listen or dancing with music from the 80's or watch a new movie in the cinema every night. So, as cruise lovers we have some expectations when we board QM2 and it was very disappointing to find out that few things fell shorter than we expected. As Spanish couple, we were not sure what will be exactly a ship with British style. We assume that a company with that reputation will have high quality world cruises that will be memorable. So, let’s evaluate our experience with usual criteria: the ship, the accommodation, cuisine, service and entertainment. SHIP Maintenance: The ship needs many maintenance and upgrading. Many washing machines out of service, few fitness machines out of service. Exterior paint reflect the age of the ship, hot tub with large and abundant brown stains, open deck water taps roasted, public areas windows very dirty ( they doesn’t clean in all cruise long…100 days ), access area to indoor pool very dirty, several parts shows lack of maintenance Facilities: Theatre with a lot of blocked views and only second seat row have good views Decor: interior decoration brown colors. CUISINE The physical structure of display units in buffet are disappointing. You need extra-long arms to get the second line trays. QM2 have poor fresh ingredients and menus in buffets only varied in the way to cooking potatoes, other food it’s very basic…dry fish or not tender meat. The food and the service is quite decent in the Britannia Restaurant for dinner, although decidedly not as gourmet and fanciful that the brochures show. You may notice that lot of things cost extra, like orange juice, expresso café... I' m sure nobody who want to make the world voyage will chose the QM2 by the food. Quality of coffee is very bad, at least you have a huge selection of teas. There are not hot hord d' oevres in the bars, and the quality of the complimentary wine in the parties cocktails is almost undrinkable. SERVICE Crew on board have not a positive attitude with regard to hospitality and with little or not at all attention to details, well organized but impersonal and smile less. It is very hard to get “good morning” while you cross somebody. We have been cruising from Barcelona many times, and this is the first time nobody helps us with our baggage in the Port and we had not welcome party. We had to put the 4 suitcases on the security machine and then go up to the ship with everything. First we thought we maybe confuse the terminal, but not, there it is, if you want to embark you have to do it by yourself until the gangway. For embarkation nobody escort us to our cabin. First day we couldn't understand this embarking procedure, but as long the days where on and new embarkation ports comes we find the answer, we are going to start our world voyage in a Hop ON Hop OF cruise, where many passenger will have the same procedure than us almost in every single port. Dining room: professional maître D, steward manager and waiters. ACCOMODATION Beware of cabins next to Poultry Galley because the noise from room service waiters won’t let you rest. The interior cabin is small. There is a lack of space in a cabin supposed for two persons. Our backs tell us there are NOT premium mattresses. Small table where you only have space for the ice basket and a book. Air conditioning flow directly over bed . No interactive TV. Other extra cost: internet or computer classes, yoga or fitness classes, sauna and bubbles hot tub, ENTERTAINMENT The entertainment is good for the first 2 weeks, but successive weeks expect to have repetitions of shows, in every leg: Passionata, Crazy in Love , Viva Italia and Singers in Concert, tribute to Sting, they performed all of them 8 times !!! The only “special “ party is the evening with in vivo music and balloons dropping from above. They repeat it every 2 weeks. The Royal Academy of Dramatic Act didn’t supply company actors , so NO more Shakespearean performances. Very nice planetarium, but only 4 different movies to display, really poor for a 100 days cruise! Practice of sports in QM2 is very limited as there are only one tennis court, very small, and unattended from time ago, ground is in lamentable conditions. And another multipurpose court, same size, where some games are occasionally proposed like badminton, volley or cricket. After left our baggage in the smallest cabin we have never being, we went to the buffet for lunch. We walk around all the 3 courts but we couldn’t find any of the expected selected meals in a glamorous ship like that. OK, we think, maybe the ports day the meals are not so good. But, unfortunately that didn’t change in all the cruise long. All days we have the same poor buffet with: rice, potatoes, carrots and cauliflower, vegetables soup, and some dry meat or chicken or fish. To made friends is no so easy in QM2 that it’s supposed. There are only 250 world cruisers mixed with 2500 passengers, who are changing every segment. There are just 4 Cocktails Parties where world cruisers can meet together. OVERVIEW QM2 is extremely uncomfortable. The quality of food and service is poor and there is a lack of understanding of what is really takes to make a luxury cruise experience, despite is touted in Cunard brochures. After first week onboard we felt very disappointed and we wrote a letter to the purser office (annex). Nobody answer until we resend the letter to the central Carnival management.
