I am reading the review written by Disappointed in April 2019 and it could have been written by us ! Such a tired old boat , it's like an old peoples home . We have been on 2 previous wonderful Viking cruises which were wonderful so decided to book this one . So disappointed we may not do another. The ship including cabins are from the dark ages and really let Viking down . To emphasise this we are docked next to a brand new Viking ship and feel like moving over. Staff as usual are wonderful and a credit to you , just the ship which ruins the trip. The food and staff in the dining room is great but the room is boring and tired Looking at other companies for our next cruise, the stafg will not be as good but it may be more comfortable. In summary the Viking Legend is the Travelodge of the Viking fleet . Read Less

We have been on a number of sea cruises previously and this was our 3rd river cruise that we chose for the destinations. We had not been on Emerald before so this was a new experience for us. We were met at the airport and transferred to the ship without any problem and greeted by the crew who were very helpful. Our luggage arrived at the cabin safely that we found that the cabin facilities were clean and well prepared as was the rest of the ship. Our first lunch was a little disappointing as there was not a great deal of choice but this improved at dinner where there were more choices available - the main criticisms that we had at dinner was that it did take a long while to be served and we found that the noise level in the dining room was so loud that it was difficult to hold conversations and this was evident at all dinners except where there was a split dinner. We were not alone in these criticisms as other guests made the same comments. The other main criticism was the noise in our cabin from the vacuum toilet system and again other guests made the same comments in adjacent cabins. The excursions were very well organised and some of the guides were very good. The disembarkation went well although we were left at the airport with no support from Emerald and had to queue for over 30 minutes at check in. Some passengers were unsure about where to check in and as there was no representative available felt a little disappointed. Apart from the noise issue it was a good cruise but this would put me off using Emerald again as this was not a problem on previous cruises. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the tour down the Danube. Our first river cruiswe and we were thrilled. We met wonderful people and the staff was amazing. Very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. The cruise itself was so fun and picturesque. We really enjoyed the tours and learned so much about the history and culture of the cities and tours. We started 2 days ahead in Prague and then went to Passau, Germany to start our cruise. So many places to see! The ship was clean and the cabin, although small was very organized and you had room to unpack and put your suitcase under the bed. The ports were fun and the excursions we chose were enjoyed! Panoramic tours of the cities: a wine tasting in Austria, bread making at a farm in Linz, A market tour with our chef in Vienna, A Mozart/Strauss concert in Vienna. We would have loved to stay in Brataslava to enjoy the Slovakian food but sadly we were there just a half day. Such beautiful cities and towns. We loved them all - Budapest is very interesting and beautiful. We arrived at night and saw the beautiful parliament building all lit up looking gold with a full moon shining also. Very impressive. I think people with mobility issues would find this trip a challenge. Lots of walking and cobblestone streets in these centuries old cities. The food was delicious with many choices and fare from the areas we toured, The piano player at night was great. Someone complained in a previous comment - we enjoyed him. Read Less

This was my first river cruise. It was to visit parts of southern Germany I hadn't visited before. It was also supposed to spend time in Esztergom, Hungary, and plenty of free time in Vienna. Didn't get either of those. Reason: owing to the hot dry summer there was possibly insufficient water in the Danube to complete the tour so we had to rush to get there. But after Hungary it hardly stopped raining. Had a bad fall on the soaking wet gangway, badly injured needing first aid. But worse: I took part in a Round the World picture quiz. Some of my correct answers were marked incorrect. Crew refused to listen to me, shouted me down. The captain joined in, shouting me down, bullying, sent me to my cabin without dinner and even threatened to throw me off the ship. This is a French company - anti-British. Food is possibly okay if you like fancy fine dining, but much of it was barely edible for my fussy delicate stomach. Cabin barely big enough for one person. My cabin was two doors from the noisy engines. Entertainment consisted of a keyboard player and a cabinet of French games. Cruise not worth half the money paid. Excursions rushed and rarely gave time for toilet visits: insufficient free time. I couldn't wait to get home! Read Less

I will NEVER take another Croisi Europe cruise. I wouldn't even want it for free! The food is a sit down with a set menu and they take forever to serve (sometimes dinner could take 2 hours with over 45 minutes to get the first dish!). With regards, to the food: Zero options. I HATED the food. Every single meal was depressing. It was unhealthy, tasteless, and they kept serving pork over and over. Hardly any vegetables and when they served them they were extremely overcooked. The salad was terrible (no variety, no dressing... just horrible. Apparently, they just expect you to add salt and oil and made an exception with our table bringing some vinegar. Even the bread was bad (again, no whole wheat, rye or even good white baguette. Seriously! The desserts were also lame. The food just made me miserable. Soe dishes were even gross. For the full 11 days, I NEVER ate anything enjoyable. This was the worst cruise of my life and I have been to many. Food is such a big part of holidays and cruising. Every single other cruise I have taken I loved the food. This was just terrible. They could not accommodate any dietary restrictions even when they tried. I swear I asked for a plate of vegetables and got a sliced steamed carrot. That was my dinner. Another time, I asked for a bowl of soup and I got some hot water with some green peas floating. It was disgusting. The staff was friendly, but clearly they are understaffed. A sit-down dinner, under those circumstances, is over pretentious and impossible to deliver in a timely fashion. Needless to say a boat of senior citizens (Jews who don't eat pork, vegans, diabetic, dairy-free, etc) all ate poorly during the cruise. I was traveling with a disabled lady and the crew does not have any kind of empathy or clue on how to help. For starters, we had to tell them to reserve the front seat of the buses for excursions. The cruise animator would take us through streets or paths full of steps, even though there were other options. Another day it was super cold and we went on a little tourist train to the top of a church. I had to beg and insist for the driver to roll down the covers. We all got the flu and were sick for the rest of thetrip after being out in the cold. All I can say is that this cruise line was extremely disappointing. Read Less

Overall we had an enjoyable Danube river cruise, from Passau to Budapest, with a 3 day pre cruise stop in Prague. Danube water levels were fine and we had no issues going through the locks. Food was very good and plentiful, service was top notch. Boris, the cruise director was adequate although a little on the sarcastic side. The cabin was clean and roomy enough. On board entertainment was a decent piano player. Outside singers/musicians were brought on board a couple of nights and were enjoyable. My only complaint with the musicians is that I prefer that they stick to their traditional music. On night we heard My Way and another night it was Take me home, country Roads. REALLY! I believe the best part of the Viking experience are the guides that they hire for the daily excursions. They were all wonderful, very knowledgeable and extremely passionate about their country. We took the Panoramic tours in Prague, Vienna and Budapest, the all day tour to Cesky-Krumlov (an enchanted medieval town) and the Heurigan evening in Vienna. My problem comes in at the end. Our flight home to the US was cancelled. Viking Air, which we booked our flight through, was no help whatsoever. The service desk on the ship said they emailed Viking Air and we would hear from them. They never did. The goal of Viking was to get your off the ship ASAP by telling you to go to the airport. Basically, get out of here and deal with the airline at the airport. We couldn’t get out of Budapest for 2 days so going to the airport, which we did not do, would have futile. We stayed on the ship as long as possible and rebooked a flight through the airline, then got a hotel, Budapest Marriott (which was superb) in town. Viking needs to be upfront with their clients and tell them to contact the airline about your cancelled flight. Claiming they will help you is nonsense Read Less

After having experienced the middle deck room in Uniworld’s Venice Cruise, the next year my husband and I were ready to sail the Danube from Passau to Budapest, but on the lower level. For the most part, I was happy with the room, food and staff. The excursions could have been better described. Most guides but the one in Passau were quite knowledgeable about their subjects. The organization of passengers onto busses and back again was streamlined and easy. I’d highly recommend all the tours except Schönbrunn Palace. It was too warm with too many people and not particularly interesting. I was quite tired after that and skipped the Mozart concert, which everyone said was fantastic. The bathroom had a heated marble floor and towel rack, which was great. The beds and pillows are sooo comfortable, although the AC wouldn’t cool quite enough for me at night. An article of clothing “disappeared” from my room’s closet. I wish I had thought to lock my clothes in my suitcase and then slide the suitcase in the space provided under the bed. Read Less

Have been ocean cruising for a few years now and thought we would give river cruising a try. We saw Jane Mcdonald on a Danube river cruise, liked the itinery, so started looking around. Viking seemed to get a lot of excellent reviews, nothing negative that we could find, so we booked with them. First off, they posted a nice personalised brochure to us. I logged onto their website and reserved our trips-don't worry if you forget this, you are automatically reserved on each of the included excursions and can change these at anytime, even on board. The meet up with the Viking rep at the airport and coach trip to the ship is very smooth.Once on the coach you won't touch your luggage again until its delivered to your cabin. On arrival we were shown around the ship and our cabin, and (depending on the time you arrive) were directed to a wine and cheese tasting event to get things going. The cabin was bigger than I expected, at least the same as on ocean cruises. Spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. Bottled water every day. Food was very good. Great choices with local variations at each port. Wine and beer included with every lunch and dinner. Waiters are mainly Philippino, very cheerful and clearly enjoy working for Viking. Nothing is too much trouble. Entertainment is obviously different to on an ocean cruise but the singers, musicians, and Tim our entertainment Director, are of very good quality and perfect for a ship of this size. Be prepared to join in, it makes for a great evening. Tim must eat Duracell batteries for breakfast, he's a human dynamo. The excursions are excellent, they run so smoothly and are fabulous. Water bottles are handed out as you leave the ship, so no getting dehydrated. No photographer on board (hooray! ), no sales pitches,no gym, a small onboard shop for those who collect memorabilia. Basically, what you pay for the cruise is virtually all you need to budget for, no nasty surprises. And no children on board! We are definitely using Viking again, we only need to decide where to go! We would thoroughly recommend this cruise. The staff we friendly helpful and attentive. They were very helpful with my dietry requirements (I am gluten intolerant) There was a good balance between sightseeing and relaxing and there were superb views from the ship as we sailed up the Danube. The daily walking tours with local guides orientated you to each new place allowing you to return after lunch to explore further if you wished. The on board infinity pool is small but pleasant. We will definitely choose Emerald river cruises for another holiday. The cruise director,Darren, is truly wonderful -I am sure you are extremely lucky to have him as he could have a very fruitful career on the stage- but his attention to detail - and everybody 's attention to detail, from cabin assistant, waiting staff and chef- has been truly exemplary and unsurpassed by any other holiday company that we have ever been on and everyone's pleasant demeanour is a joy to behold. Our first river cruise was delightful. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly helpful staff made it enjoyable. The food was enjoyable with the menu reflecting the countries that we were passing through as well as offering other choices plus a standard menu. The evening meals were normally at 7.00p.m. with one sitting and plenty of time to chat over the provided glass of wine. Dress was smart casual with the emphasis on casual. I only noticed one person wearing a jacket. Entertainment was limited. The pianist was good and each evening there was a local "speciality act" including opera or folk. The included trips were interesting with plenty of walking. Several of the cities had many cobbled streets and we were glad of our sure footed shoes. Some of the trips also had a significant number of steps so it is worth enquiring about this before hand if you have difficulty walking as the older buildings tended not to have disabled access. Most cities had a charge for using the rest rooms "Pay to Pee" which varied from 50 Euro cents to a Euro so make sure you have some coins as not all had a person to give change. Even McDonalds had a 50 cent entry machine. The ship occasionally docked outside town and then shuttle buses were freely provided. Most towns were busy and the ship often docked alongside other hotel boats so the view from the cabin could disappear. Read Less

This was our first River Cruise and one has to remember it's very different from the large liners which we're used to! Cabins smaller, but adequately furnished with well stocked toiletries in the bathroom. Excellent quality linen and towels and comfy bed (far superior than those in the Hilton in Budapest at the end of the cruise). All the staff were wonderful; so polite, friendly, professional - all the positives. In all the service was excellent. A lovely large deck to sit out on and a quiet library at the back. The dining room was light and airy and food very good. The wines and other drinks (especially the Bellinas!) were excellent. A lounge for entertainment which was very good in the evening, in particular the Dancing Quiz - brilliant!!! A tea/coffee etc. station available outside the lounge, not practical for first thing in the morning. As many, or as few tours could be taken as one wishes. If not, sit in peace on the sun deck and relax. A lot of little touches were provided: face towels when arriving back on board, little drinks when arriving late at night in Budapest. The only downside I can think of was the arrival at Munich for the onward drive to Passu. Left didn't seem to know what the right was doing and we were left hanging around in the airport and outside waiting for the coaches. No one came with us on the coach, hence we weren't told what was going to happen. Relief came when we saw the ship. Also, beforehand our travel agent had been informed by Viking that we may be upgraded to a Verandah suite. Upon looking at the ship, I didn't see any Verandah suites. I would travel with Viking again, especially if Boris was the Programme Director - he was brilliant. Thank you Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary and timing within the year so that 14 of us could take a family trip. (Parents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Friends). The Viking reservation and airfare staff were wonderful in helping us to coordinate such a large group trip. Besides the great excursions, scenic sailing, and wonderful food, it was the ship’s staff that truly made this experience the trip of a lifetime. Everyone knew we were a large group and went out of their way to accommodate us for meals together and to keep us together for the various excursions. The system for shore excursions is so well organized. The hearing devices for the tour worked well so that you could hear the tour guide without having to be right next to them. In other words, you could wonder off a bit taking photos but still hear the guide. We can’t say enough about the staff. The dining staff knew our likes and dislikes almost within the first day. Thank you to our waiters Viktor, Sarah, and Miroslav for great dining experiences. They were so great during our first meal that we made sure to sit in their section for lunch and dinner the rest of the trip! Sasha took care of our room meticulously. By the time we came back from breakfast, the room would be cleaned and the bed made. Korana went out of her way to help me shop on another Viking ship that had different clothing and she offered to gift wrap a necklace I purchased as well. Ivana, the Hotel Manager, always had a smile greeting us as we got back from our excursions. She answered guests questions and kept everything in excellent order. Boris, the Program Director, provided insight and information about our upcoming experiences, and he did this with great enthusiasm and lots of humor. Emil, the Maitre D, made sure the meal and beverage services were top notch. Lagos, the Captain, provided a detailed tour of the bridge and how he navigates the ship with such great skill. We would definitely go again on a Viking River cruise and would hope to see the same wonderful staff! Read Less

I chose this cruise to see parts of the world that I have not seen. The crew were fantastic, always smiling and ready to assist. They all seemed to enjoy their job and were happy to be there. That makes a difference. The ports were incredible, the scenery splendid. Be ready for lots of walking. The tours were fantastic, the buses were clean and air conditioned. Bottles of water always available upon disembarkation of the ship to join your tour. Guides were easy to understand and were very knowledgeable. The ship was a nice size and the cabin (balcony) was adequate. There was plenty of storage so no problems there. I regret paying for a balcony. Several times we were tied up next to other boats so the balcony could not be used that much in some of the ports as you were virtually inches from the balcony of the other ship. I felt jilted. It is not worth the extra money. Just sit on the sun deck. Advance notice about the limited availability of the balcony would have been a nice courtesy. There was a terrible odor the first night and on another night. When I reported it, they said there was nothing they could, it happens when another ship is tied up against ours. Two stars for the dining experience. The quality, quantity, availability and variety were limited. Breakfast was fine. For lunch there were pasta, sandwiches or burgers, etc. Dinner was mediocre. Availability of cheese & fruits or crudites for snacking is not asking for much - I would have given 3 stars for dining but instead, the get 2 stars. Entertainment is almost non-existent but I didn't expect much to begin with. If you are not on the ship during the meal times or if you wanted a snack between meals, then you are sorely pressed to find anything to eat on board and there was nowhere to get anything to eat. I asked in the lounge if they had any appetizers but no luck. I’m glad I experienced it but next time, I will consider other options as it was not worth my money. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and having read some very different reviews was sceptical, Viking did not disappoint!! On arrival in Munich found one of our bags to be missing. On stepping onboard the concierge department took it upon themselves to resolve the issue and it arrived next day just before we were due to sail - thanks again. The ship itself may not be the most modern in fleet but all areas were kept in pristine condition. The food was first class in both the restaurant and the Aquavit Terrace. Boris, Cruise Director gave presentations each evening on the included excursions which were good and never demanding. A mention to Jay in the bar who was very attentive to all patrons and on first name terms within a couple of days - spot on for customer service! A great trip and will not be our last with Viking. A longboat river cruise had been on our bucket list for a long time, and the time had finally come. The pre-trip to Prague was exceptional. We lost the first day due to cancelled flights and missed connections, but after that things went smoothly. The entire staff at Viking was exceptionally good at making sure everything went well. We've never experienced service any better than this. The best part about longboats is the interaction you have with other guests. The lounge was like a big living room, very comfortable, where you could relax with new friends over drinks. Dining was a special treat and our waiter did everything possible to make sure every detail was covered. I have some food allergies, and the Maitre d' met with me each morning to plan my meals for the day and make sure I had what I wanted. This level of service was outstanding, and I really appreciated how they made me feel like I was the only passenger on board. All things considered, this was one of the best vacations we've had, and it was made all the better because of the professional staff and the exceptionally high level of personal service they give. We chose this cruise to celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary and because we wanted to explore Central Europe and in particular, to spend a couple of days in Vienna. The whole organisation of the cruise was impeccable from start to finish and we were very impressed with the standard of the accommodation and the dining facilities. Any comments regarding improvements would be so minor as to hardly warrant mentioning eg. water for the tea machine was never hot enough - but where can you get a decent cup of tea outside the UK anyway? The onboard entertainment was restrained and understated which was fine for us but may not have suited those looking for something more lively. Seating for meals was not predetermined so you could sit wherever you wanted, alone or with friends as you wished. There were choices as to the difficulty of walks and excursions so those who wanted to stride out could do so and those with mobility issues were also catered for. Our Cruise Director was exceptional and always ready to help at any time of day. Given that complimentary drinks were available at lunch and dinner, we found that everything was included other than the gifts we bought whilst ashore. A cabin allowance of 250 euros meant that we could take up at least one of the additional excursions without any extra expenditure. We booked two further days stay in Budapest after the cruise had finished and it was not until we had left the ship that we actually began to spend any money! Altogether we thought it represented excellent value and it would be hard to imagine how it could be bettered. Well done Emerald! Read Less

This was our first cruise ever. Was somewhat hesitant on cruising as we thought we would not have enough to do and things would be too micro managed. This boat was wonderful. Once met at the airport, Uniworld took charge of the bags and upon boarding the boat all bags were brought to the room. Room and boat were wonderful. All our needs were met on board and tours were arranged with very knowledgeable guides of the various cities. Our tours were well set up and there were options available depending on what your interests were. Our ship had some children on it and there was enough for them to do. We traveled at times during the day to take in the beautiful scenery, although some of the travel was done in the evening. The food was delicious. There was so much variety. Breakfast was buffet, with also an special order option. Lunch buffet with every day a special chef's carving station. Wine and drinks all day. Staff was just wonderful Special bar area for relaxing between meals and after a day of touring the various cities and several evening entertainment. Sun deck had lounge and tables available with bar set up during the day. Room was beautiful and heated bathroom floors and towel rack. We had a wonderful time on our Avalon cruise to Eastern Europe. Starting in Prague the arrival was smooth being greeted by the Avalon staff then transferred to the Prague Hilton where there is a dedicated Avalon area. The transfer to the ship was seamless and the ship itself was wonderful very easy to get around and our cabin P320 was so lovely and peaceful with its panoramic view and super comfortable bed! And the cabin service was beyond compare (thank you Saleh). The dining was excellent and varied with local cuisine while in that port. I eat gluten free and there was a meeting with the head chef before we sailed to address any concerns with food allergies. The wait staff (thank you Nick) always brought me gluten free bread and knew every item on the menu that was gluten free. The entertainment was varied and always fun and a more intimate experience (this is not a large Caribbean cruise). The staff was always there is answer any question and the meetings before each port was informative and downright fun. Robert our cruise directer was fantastic his desk was in the middle of the ship and always open. All of the ports we visited were well organized and all of the guides are local and so obviously love their towns and cities. You are given a headset and receiver before each tour so even if you are in the back you can hear everything the guide is saying. Be prepared to walk a lot on cobble stone streets that are very narrow that you have to sometimes share with passing cars. Avalon also offers a "gentle" walkers plan too. Having done a 27 day European river cruise two years ago on a high end cruise line I was looking for a shorter Danube River cruise to take my mother and sister on with my husband. Gate 1 offered the ports I was most interested in at a huge price savings per day and additional three days in Munich prior to our cruise as well as additional days in Budapest at the end. As others have mentioned there are very few reviews of Gate 1 River cruises. We found the ship to be first class in every way and our cabin had ample storage and of a very good design but the only obvious difference was not having a small table and chair next to the French balcony . The food was very good but perhaps not quite as gourmet as our former experience. Still very nicely presented and many options. All of our city tours had excellent local guides and our Gate 1 leader Krisztina was absolutely amazing in every way. The three day pre-extension in Munich was fabulous with the location of the hotel and touring experience Gate 1 provided. Be sure to go see the river surfers if you were in Munich! We did the optional NEUSCHWANSTEIN Castle tour ifrom Munich and the Salzburg tour from Linz . Both are beautiful drives with good guides Do not do the castle tour if you have a problem walking. My 89-year-old mother struggled with so many stairs. We did two additional concerts in Vienna on our own, both are fantastic. Mozart concert at the Golden Hall and a string concert at Saint Ann’s Church. Be sure to enjoy the coffee houses in Vienna. I must say is the Gerstner Coffee house across from the opera house. Be sure to go up to the third-floor as the ceiling and room looks like a palace . Budapest is where we ended our tour and even though I’ve been there a few times I always look forward to going again. A definite must see is the New York city café which is the most beautiful café in the world. Google it to believe me! Our experience was wonderful with Gate 1 and I would not consider them a budget line except for the price. We will definitely consider them in the future as we met so many people on board that had used them up to 26 times with all fantastic trips! We usually take three trips a year, sometimes booking everything on our own, sometimes going with a land tour or cruise company. I would not hesitate to book with them again. Read Less

At every moment someone was there to help understand where we were, what we should be looking for or just for friendly conversation. Fellow travelers were fun; meeting people from around the world is always educational and expanding ones perspective. Shore excursions were well planned and carried out. Our most enjoyable excursion was to the town of Czny Krumlov. Charming town in a beautiful country. Seeing countries previously behind the Iron Curtain was very eyeopening. From all cruises my wife and I have taken in the past, none of them hold a candle to the accommodations and friendly staff that we experienced on this cruise with Viking. I was extremely impressed with Viking Air and the staff members that met us when we arrived and those who stayed with us till we left. The 3 day precruise visit to Prague was also impressive, with the 5 star hotel acommodations and Viking concierge. The excursions preselected by the cruise line were extremely informative and fun, even though temperatures remained in the 30s F. The food was outstanding in every way with specialized foods from regions we visited. I was concerned about sailing without the many venues and activities seen on larger boats, but my concerned was quickly suppressed in that the staff keeps you extremely busy every hour of each day. Most everyone on the boat were like us. A little apprehensive, but willing to make the best of our cruise. We watched out for one another and helped each other whenever we could. This was the winning solution of friendships made. Our dinner table started at 4, it quickly grew to 12, and still was not big enough to gather and share all our adventures. My wife keeps telling everyone that the cruise with Viking was the best vacation she has ever been on. We developed friendships with many new people, and still connecting online since the cruise. We have already booked another cruise with Viking for November 2020 Read Less

We wanted to see the Christmas Markets and this seemed an efficient way to do this. It was our first ever river cruise, and we were lucky to be able to sail the entire way given this year's chronic low water issues. Most of the staff were outstanding; very warm and helpful except perhaps for the tour director Lee, who seemed a bit prickly and distant at times. The weather was VERY cold, and this may not have given us a true picture of what river cruising is like, as the outdoor areas of the ship were unusable, and several of the excursions were bitterly cold, including the one I had most looked forward to, to Cesky Krumlov. I have been an independent traveler for most of my life. I don't like tours, and some of the excursions were a bit too programmed for my taste (though the guides were all excellent). Not sure if I will try another river cruise at this point. Read Less

Chose this cruise for 2 reasons: a) My birthday b) Mary Berry on board as my wife is a fan! The crew were excellent; all seemed to get on really well and were very efficient & cheerful Excursions were also v.good with free time to explore. Local guides spoke good English & were easily understood. The cabins have a poor layout & poor sound insulation. The wall which has your headboard has the neighbouring cabin's TV on the other side. It would be better if dividing walls had BOTH TVs on it. Also the bathroom door is a sliding one which is only 18inches from the bed. Every time our neighbours used the bathroom we could hear the door opening and closing. The bed is comfortable but it is 2 single beds pushed together & more floor space could've been made by having a standard double bed. Not shown how to convert the room into a balcony; certainly wasn't obvious. Didn't like sailing at night as we missed many scenic views along the way. Minimal daytime sailing which was a great shame. Also going through locks at 3am wakes you up! Please Emerald STOP SAILING AT NIGHT!! The food on board was excellent; except the one time buffet which was lukewarm and with a good choice. Read Less

Top notch experience all the way around. We were met at the airport as scheduled and the tour began without a hitch. Our cruise was unaffected by low water and we were able to complete our itinerary as scheduled. The Christmas Markets were great fun, we participated in every excursion, and met some ah-mazing people over dinner and drinks each night. Don’t miss Cesky Krumlov if given the opportunity. We toured on a Sunday so there was less traffic and we were able to enjoy “Little Prague” longer. My 20-something daughter fell in love with Budapest and can’t wait to go back for a longer stay. We chose to sit with the same waiter each evening and Vlad worked hard to remember our particular likes and dislikes. He was one of the highlights of being onboard. Our cabin was roomy enough for two and the heated bathroom floors were such a luxury. The common areas were perfect for watching the countryside as we cruised by—we enjoyed unlimited hot tea and sweets while relaxing in the lounge. During some of our downtime, we enjoyed catching up on Downton Abbey in anticipation of the movie set to be released. While we did not require a lot of staff attention, they were friendly, accommodating, informative and quite fun. Would definitely choose Viking again for river cruising and look forward to sailing with them again. Read Less

We choose this cruise because of the Christmas markets and the cities we would visit. We did the pre-package in Prague. The cruise itinerary was changed due to the low river and we lost cruising on half the river, but only one port, Nuremberg. The ship was also changed, but it was sister ship, so it was not a big issue. They did not change the app when you logged in to show the change in itinerary. This was our first river cruise after doing about 5 of the big ocean cruises. What we loved: - The staff on the ship was excellent. Very helpful, very knowledgeable and happy to be there! - Salzburg was an amazing day trip. I would love to more time there. -The guides on the tours were great! Very knowledgeable. - The food was great (but see note below for more information) -The buffets for dinner and lunch that were offered (see not below) - You get to know many of the people cruising with you because of the small boat. What we didn't love - Since it is a small boat you eat dinner all together for the most part. Some of the nights they offered a buffet upstairs from the main dining room. We loved that option when it was offered. -When everyone dined at the same time it was very loud in the dining room. -There is not room service for dinner, only breakfast. - Many times there was only one tour offered so you will split into groups, but then basically walk over each other during the tour. What we would do different -Pack really warm clothes- long underwear, hand and feet warmers. A couple days were very cold -Go out on your own if you are the type who doesn't want to move with 200+ of your closest friends- we did that in Vienna and had a wonderful time - Make reservations on the pre or post trip for dinner. - I would do the post trip over the pre trip if I had to choose. Simply due to time change and jet lag. If you can do both, then for sure do both! Read Less
