I decided to take a girls trip with my daughter who had never been on a cruise. We chose this cruise because of price and itinerary and wasn't really particular about the ship itself, other than I like somewhat newer ships. Turns out that we absolutely LOVED the ship and have already booked another cruise on it for next year! (I NEVER do things like this!). The cabin was wonderful! My booking category was BF but it is really a BB. I have booked the same location for our next cruise and it was a BB for that same cabin. I think at the time we booked a guarantee and just got lucky. It is in a very nice location in the center of the ship and half-way between the forward and aft elevators. It was nice and quiet. There are no cabins in the area across the hall. I think it is an area that they store the supplies for cleaning, but we rarely ever saw anyone coming or going. The decks above and below are all cabins, so there was no noise from public spaces. In fact, there are several decks above and below that are all cabins so the nearest public area are decks 8 & 16. Ours was a balcony cabin but was very similar in size to the mini-suites on the Celebrity and Princess cruises we have been on. It has lots of storage space! The difference between a mini-suite and a balcony suite on this class of ship is the bathroom is larger in the mini-suite. That is about all. But we found the bathroom to be very comfortable and had plenty of storage. There are a couple of shelves above the counter and more shelves below the counter. Plus a nice size cabinet under the sink. There are hooks on the back of the door to hang robes, etc. In the cabin, there were 2 nightstands with a little storage area and a couple cabinets near the TV. Underneath the sofa there are 2 VERY large drawers. The bedding for the sofa was kept in one but we asked the steward to take it and used one drawer for all my shoes and the other for our beach things. They were not even close to being full. The luggage fits nicely under the beds, even the largest piece. We each had 2 under the bed. The closet had plenty of hanging space, even for 2 women, plus a top shelf and several smaller shelves on the other side of the closet. There is a safe in the closet, which looks small but was large enough to fit my tablet, kindle, camera, passports, jewelry, and 2 wallets. The room temperature was great and actually could get quite cold if we turned it all the way down. Beds were comfortable, although the sheets/comforter at the bottom aren't tucked in so I woke up with it all twisted around me. LOL. I learned to tuck it in myself before going to bed. The beds are twins that convert into a queen, but the twins seemed bigger than a regular twin to me. They were very comfortable. The TV remote was a little quirky and was annoying when we would hear the announcements begin and couldn't get it to come on, but not really a big deal. We were told that they were all like that, but I still think it may have been the batteries. We requested robes and the refrigerator to be emptied out so we had room to put our water bottles we brought with us. The balconies aren't as large as the Celebrity ones, but adequate for 2 people. For a family of 4 it would be tight. Lots of outlets to plug in your electronics (USB & AC). There are USB outlets by the light on each side of the bed and 4 AC outlets on the desk. There is a small coffeemaker, which was great to get a cup first thing in the morning. Also a hairdryer under the desk. Pre-cruise - We arrived in Miami late the night before the cruise and stayed across from Bayside Marketplace at Holiday Inn. Older hotel but still nice and in a perfect location with our limited time in Miami. In the morning we had enough time to go to Bayside Marketplace and grab some breakfast, visit some shops, and go on a Miami Millionnaire's cruise. We walked back to the hotel and took an Uber to port. Embarkation was smooth and not busy. Cabin was ready upon check-in at approimately 1:30-2:00pm. We had lunch, went to the excursion desk, walked around the ship, and when we got back to the cabin our luggage was there and we unpacked. Photos are attached - sorry many are sideways. Public Areas - The public areas are very nice and spacious. My favorite thing was the outdoor dining areas. Each specialty restaurant has an outdoor dining area, plus there are lots of seating areas outside on both sides of the ship. The pool area is crowded, loud, and not nearly big enough on sea days. But if you don't need to be next to the pool there are lots of other areas to find a chair. For such a large ship, it was still somewhat easy to get around. We were located mid-ship so I think that helped not feel like we had to walk forever to get somewhere. I know we didn’t see everything and am excited to be going again next year to see it all again. Entertainment - We saw the 2 main shows: Choir of Man and After Midnight. While both were good, we thought Choir of Man was the better of the two. They both start a little slow in my opinion. They were good, but not the best I have seen. The entertainment in the Atrium was the most fun! Next time will make that more of a priority and try to see more of them. Dueling pianos was really good! And the comedy club was good too! Restaurants - We ate in a different restaurant every night. We made reservations ahead of time online for all but one night. Manhattan Room (main dining room) is beautiful and has live music so it is lively and entertaining (and loud), Savor and Taste are quiet and more intimate. O'Sheehans is like going to Applebees. Nice option when you don't feel like a big fancy meal. We ate at 3 specialty restaurants: Cagney's had the MOST amazing steaks! This was our favorite by far. We ate sitting outside on the first night and practically had the place to ourselves. Teppanyaki was very good. Typical Japanese restaurant where you sit with others at a cook table. Brazilian Moderno was disappointing. Went because my daughter had never been to a Brazilian restaurant, but it was not nearly as good as the others I have been to. We ate at the Garden Cafe every morning and at lunch when on the ship and there is such a huge selection that we never really got tired of it. We also stopped in for coffee or a snack as soon as we got back on the ship on port days. It is a busy place but we chose simpler food items on days we were in a hurry and saved the cook-to-order omelets for sea days. Service - Cannot complaint at all about the service. We felt like the entire staff had a friendly and happy attitude. Our room steward was very nice and took good care of us. I felt like the worst service we received was from Moderno Brazilian. It wasn’t terrible, but just not the same as the rest of the ship. The most friendly were the staff in the Garden Café. I’m not sure I could keep up being so happy with all the people that go through there. Quite amazing. Ports & Excursions - Loved the ports: Great Stirrup Cay, Costa Maya, Harvest Caye, Roatan. At Great Stirrup Cay we got off early and walked a ways down the beach to find a quieter area. My daughter went parasailing (booked through cruiseline after getting on the ship - note that they take 7 passengers at a time parasailing and there were spots available for singles but not for 2 people). The food was included and drinks as well if you have a drink package. In Costa Maya (our favorite port!) we reserved chairs at Yaya Beach directly with Yaya. Walked out of the port area and grabbed a taxi ($4/pp). It was in a quiet area of the beach and we absolutely loved it! We paid about $25US per person to reserve a double padded chair with thatched umbrella for the entire day. And then that money was applied to any food and drink purchase. We each had a smoothie in the morning, then each ordered a lunch meal, and a couple of drinks. The pork BBQ tacos were fabulous! We ordered a side of guacamole and chips and even my daughter who doesn’t typically like guac really enjoyed it. Soooo good! In the afternoon we had booked a snorkel trip with Dive Doctor (direct). The office is right on Yaya Beach and the boat leaves from there as well. We could have booked something through the cruiseline but it was simpler to leave from the beach instead of going back to port. It was fun and we saw some beautiful sea life. We also got a massage on the beach for $25. We took a taxi back to the port for a little shopping to end the day (make sure to check out the flamingos). The whole day felt like heaven! Harvest Caye is a private island so not much to do or see there other than beach-type activities (volleyball, swimming, snorkeling, etc.). We booked an excursion through the cruiseline called Monkey River Eco Tours. The boat is right at the dock and it takes you to the Monkey River to see all kinds of wildlife, including howler monkeys. Besides the monkeys, we saw lots of different birds, iguanas, turtles, etc. I think kids would like this excursion. Then we still had plenty of time to go to the beach after the tour. It is a really nice island with food, drinks, and fabulous restrooms. There were plenty of chairs in both sun and shade. Our last port was Roatan. It is a VERY small port so if you don’t do an excursion anywhere else you will want to here. I arranged to go to AJ’s Monkey’s and Sloths first thing in the morning. Booked it directly with them. The owner, Ashley, actually sent her grandfather to pick us up and he was waiting right outside the port entrance with a sign with our name on it. It was about 30-45 minute drive and we felt like we got to know a little about Roatan. AJ’s is a very small park in back of her home, but so worth it! We held monkeys, sloths, and birds. Then he took us back to port. We had also scheduled a tour to swim with dolphins which was to begin about 10:30. This was our favorite excursion of all! You take a small bus to Anthony’s Key Resort, then a small boat to a little island. For 30 minutes the trainer talks and interacts with the dolphin and it does tricks, we got to touch it, etc. THEN, we put on snorkel gear and got to actually free swim with about 18 dolphins! It was amazing! We did a little shopping at port before getting back on board. Shopping – One of the shops in the ship was giving away a free bracelet and a good deal on charms to go on it. We each ended up spending $50 but now have a “cruise” themed Pandora-type bracelet. There is a different set of charms available for purchase every day, but you can wait until the last day and get the free bracelet and the charms all at the same time. On the ship there is a port talk early in the cruise. I thought we would get a bunch of good tips about where to get the best deals, but it was mostly about high-priced diamonds and watches. They give away prizes but nothing that was worth wasting an hour of my time so I would recommend skipping it unless you are very interested in buying diamons. We bought the most things in Costa Maya on the beach. Yes there are a lot of people selling things, but we found the people to be so friendly and nice and the prices were really good. We bought ankle bracelets, a necklace, and coverup. Bought a few other jewelry items in ports, some coffee in Honduras. Disembarkation - We set our large luggage out the night before and carried off our smaller one. Had breakfast and then got off at our designated time. We booked an excursion throught the cruiseline for a 2-hour Miami tour with a drop off at the airport. This was the day before the Superbowl in Miami so were afraid to do much else because of traffic, etc. This was the WORST and most BORING tour! Bus was fine and the guide was nice enough, but it didn't go anywhere of interest. It was mainly an architecture and historical tour. It was supposed to go to Miami Beach, but the beach road was closed so it took us through the town of Miami Beach instead. It was supposed to take us past Little Havan and Winwood Walls, but didn't. My daughter and I both struggled to stay awake. Definitely would not recommend it! Read Less

The ship's is in great shape and has many top deck activities. I enjoyed the aft top deck where they had a bar, hot tubs and showed movies on a giant screen at night. The food was average, long wait for average steak at cagneys. The buffet was typical, could always find a seat. The public decks 678 were always crowded, they held many shows in the atrium as it seems they could have used another lounge or two. it was always noisy and crowded. The casino was open to the other spaces so the smoke permeates the adjacent spaces. Comedy club was standing room only book once you're on board! They did have a second arcade near the atrium which as very underused, with bowling, pool, darts plus some arcade games. Strangely the bowling alley was a nice quiet area. Crew and service was average I think they needed more bar servers long waits to get drinks with everyone having the free packages. great ship for warm weather cruises not so much for colder weather when you'd want some indoor space. Food republic (NCL Escape) During my cruise on NCL Escape January 25, 2020 I enjoyed dining here on multiple occasions. The dining room is open and roomy. The main feature is a glass wall with sprawling views of the ocean and sunsets. Stools are also available at the counters overlooking the chef’s preparation area. Plates are as advertised with 4 choices included with a dining plan- you eat very well. If you don’t have the dinning plan, I ordered a la carte, very affordable good quality/price. Perfect for solo travelers or sharing in groups. I love sushi and wasn’t disappointed, it was fresh and of excellent quality. I mostly ordered maki/rolls with salmon, shrimp and tuna. Squeaky clean open kitchens. I enjoyed conversation with hard-working but engaging chef (Wayan). Even on the busiest evening there was no wait, food was on the table in minutes. An important part of this experience was the Maître D (Edelyn Tuzon), always greeting patrons at the reception, polite, courteous and efficient. This lady remembered my name and last order every time, very helpful with explaining the menu or the use of the tablet. (for those afraid of technology, no worries the maître D and servers will assist with everything or a paper menu is available). All around fantastic experience, a cut above the rest, I would highly recommend. Mandara Spa Barbershop and Thermal Suite aboard the NCL Escape (January 25, 2020) Amir is the best barber! Very nice experience. Amir was courteous polite and attentive. Took the man facial with haircut that also included a vigorous facial, neck, arm and shoulder massage. Easily surpassed all my expectations, I’ll be back! Used the thermal suite pass throughout the week, relaxing, peaceful & quiet, views from the large windows are spectacular, the water features, especially the juts in the T-Pool help relive aches and pains. I recommend and will be taking on my next cruise. Read Less

Pros: Very clean boat and warm, friendly attentive staff. They treat you like gold. Casino is large and fun. In general, the entertainment was good. We saw a great comedian and enjoyed the dueling pianos. Staterooms are nice and comfortable. Great Stirrup Caye and Belize private islands were nice and fun with plenty to do when ported. Cons: This boat is very crowded. Expect to be jam packed into every elevator. Pools are tiny and very overcrowded. Impossible to find lounge chairs on pool decks as well. Hard to find open seats at buffet during breakfast and lunch times. They just put too many people on this ship and after a week of being constantly overcrowded it became annoying. Food is ok, not great. Speciality drinks are ok, could be better. Costa maya and Roatan Honduras ports were terrible unless you paid for an excursion. Basically just a crowded shopping mall. Just some history ,This was our 42 nd Cruise and 17th on NCL ,we're Platinum Plus Members . I won't bother going into the all the problems caused by the previous Cruises Noro Virus ,all I can say is that everything I've read in other reviews Is 100% true . It didn't start well ,as we arrived at 9.30 and didn't board until 1.30-2.00 pm Since we're Platinum Plus we were allowed into a separate waiting area ,and we were supposed to be the 2nd group to board , As soon as we boarded we rushed down to the information deck to sign up for the Vibes club ,this was the second disappointment as we were informed that it was already sold out . I found this really disappointing as we were within the first 150 people onboard. The only groups that got on before us were the Haven Guess's and the Handicapped . This brings me to a new complaint that I've experienced on a few cruises ,is that a large family group sometime 8 or more bring grandma who is in a wheel chair ,and the whole family gets priority embarkation, I'm not against someone with a true Handicap getting special service , actually I hope they do, but is it really necessary to give the whole group ,when really only one healthy person is necessary, after all there all heading to the same place, now multiply this by 50 or 100 and you will see what I mean. We've cruised on the NCL Breakaway 3 times ,and never experienced the crowds ,and lines like we did on this ship. I guess the Escape holds more guess than the Breakaway , It took us a few days to find a comfortable place to hang out ,H2-0 Spice was the only place we found that thee were still lounge chairs were usually available . I have to give this ship 4 stars for the quality of the food in both the free restaurants and the premium dining options ,even the buffet was quite good ,as they did a great job at having specialty nights . As far as entertainment , we found the H2-0 spice had varied music nights ,and it was great hanging out in the warm Caribbean weather outside on the deck .The Band " Lets Groove " was very good and played for great music from the 80s and 90s . Spent quite a bit of time in the casino which was good ,except the smoke ,I'm an ex smoker [25 years] but the smell and smoke bother my eyes ,the problem is that almost all the tables in the non smoking section were empty ,and I prefer to play blackjack with a table of players . The gym was good with plenty of machines and free weight, but No towels for the first 7 days . you had to go to the desk and ask for a towel ,didn't really understand that. Another small incident that pissed me off was I had brought a sealed bottle of NCL purchased water off the ship ,getting back on the bottle ,still sealed , was confiscated by the so called security , Claiming that it was CONTAMINATED . how could it be contaminated if it was never opened ?. Many of the crew seamed confused and dazed over some of the rules and regulations that went along with the virus protection .I was using my elbow to press the button in the elevators as they looked filthy. Overall the cruise was OK we had great weather , but unless I get an upgrade to the Haven or a owners suite, we Most likely won't cruise on this ship again . The only port I would recommend skipping is St.Johns Antigua.Very poor Island Took a ship sponsored tour [lunch included] to a nice Beach , The beach was nice ,kind of crowded ,and had the normal hawkers trying to sell you whatever, but we're used to that and most left as soon as they figured you weren't buying anything, but the beach house was run down, and the food was horrible . They had some kind of local fish they called butter fish ,better name would be bone fish . Most of the rest of the Islands we did our own tours or booked into a private resort for the day. Embarcation and debarcation total disasters. Novo virus on previous cruise so ship had to be thoroughly cleaned--I totally understand but not enough seats in special needs area. New York cruise terminal is a total disaster!!! It cannot handle a ship with over 4,000 passengers comfortably. Total lack of communication by Norwegian on debarcation--never announced that there were two exits areas from ship--keep your eyes and ears open so that you can make your way. Had a Studio room--felt like I was on a spaceship in that room--so much white. No place to read during the day in a quiet area like on the Gem. Atrium is too close to Guest services, shore excursion desks and all that other junk. Hallways are way too narrow--walk sideways if you're going by a housekeeper's cart. Food in buffet is acceptable but not great--on sea days there were so many people walking around to see what was avaiable I felt like I was in a NYC subway station. Theater is poorly designed--felt like I was in my 1958 neighborhood theater--and ugly--only 2 aisles, need 4 aisles--no one wants to sit by the wall so people always climbing over people. Whole ship is a design diaster. Not enough seats in Atrium to listen to music in the evening--shoud have a different show in the theater every night--not 3 for a 14-night cruise. Pools are small and no Solarium like on Royal Caribbean.. Same Jimmy Buffet tape at 12 noon sharp every day in the pool area. Same 3 movies constantly. Also, annuncements all the time to come pick up your "free" charm bracelet and then in next second "buy 3 charms for only $10,00."--please I did not just fall off the turnip truck! Came home with broncitis because of all the dry bad air on this ship. Hate thr Escape. Read Less

This was part of back to back cruises. There was an outbreak of Neuro Virus on the cruise before. At check in they continuously gave false info kept people waiting for hours overloading the terminal. They never said outright at terminal there was an outbreak. They did not give us option to cancel at pier and get money back. When on board we called NCL and my agent called NCL. They refused to offer us a thing. The ship was a complete mess Everything was cleared away. No menus on bars no spa no vacuum for a week. Service was just absolutely awful and NCL just has terrible customer relations and just don't care. Other cruise lines that had this kind of outbreak offered you option to not sail and refund your money or sail get partial money back and large discounts on next cruise On top of that right while we were sailing they removed tons of drinks from the menu and made their prices outrageous You now have to buy a premium drinks package above the regular one at $35 a day to cover it. That was not available yet. The only thing was after a wrote a stinging not to hotel director did customer service supervisor do something for me on second part of cruise. The Epic just had a crash and NCL refused to give any money back. Only 50% off on next cruise. This CEO is really something. No customer relations at all. They just don't care about anything or anybody. Read Less

We got to see bubbling sulfur coming out of the Earth. The best part was seeing The Pitons. Stunning peaks rising up from the island. They were just breathtaking!! This was our second time on The Escape and we were not disappointed. Embarkation was a bit chaotic as the ship had a problem with gastroenteritis on the previous cruise to ours. We had to wait a while to get into our cabins and we were late leaving New York. Yes there was extensive sanitizing throughout the cruise and we were not able to serve ourselves in the Garden Café but this did not interfere with our enjoyment of the cruise. We thought the staff were very professional and still very friendly especially as they had an extra work load added to their already busy jobs due to the sanitizing process. The food on this cruise was exceptional. I love a curry and they had one on every day in the garden Cafe. The Speciality restaurants were great, we ate in Cagney's, Moderno, La Cucina, Le Bistro and Bayamo. The service in all was second to none. Our cabin was kept clean and tidy by our hard working steward Jerrry. Anything we needed he provided with a smile. We were amazed at how quickly he would have our cabin serviced, mostly by the time we came back from breakfast. The entertainment on the ship was great, we loved JR in the District, he was very entertaining. After Midnight in the main theatre was like watching a West End show! We loved the themed evenings in Spice H2O there was music for everyones taste. The rope course and crazy golf were also lots of fun. We took a couple of tours from the ship and enjoyed them very much. But our favourite thing to do was to watch the sun go down with a lovely glass of wine in Cellars wine bar on the Waterfront. We were entertained morning, noon and night. We were also made to feel special and well looked after. Dismebarkation was smooth until we got into the cruise terminal. The New York Manhattan cruise terminal cannot handle a ship of this size. All in all we really enjoyed our cruise and cannot wait to take our next one. Read Less

Our cruise left a lot to be desired. We are platinum members of ncl and this cruise was my 16th cruise and the worst, maybe even my last. We arrived at terminal 11:30am. As platinum we should have priority boarding .. We did not ...in fact, when we asked about it we were asked..."are you haven?" we said, "no, we are platinum"  she smerked, "only haven is priority". That turned out to be the theme of our cruise, that AND the ship was filthy, full of airborne sickness and the crew was angry We sat and waited for over 4 hours packed in the terminal with over 4k other people. The ship was quarantined due to a bug effecting over 300 staff and/or passengers. We were not told this until after we were on the ship!!! We were not able to leave and rebook! We were not given a choice. Nope we were forced to embark on a journey trapped with an airborne and contact virus that could cause fatality in the elderly or immunocompromised. Once onboard, the rooms were unavailable for about 4 move hours with passengers standing with their carry on baggage or sitting on the stairways and such. eerie, quite, cold, and none of the staff smiling, as they were clearly exhausted from the previous cruise and seemed to be angry that "we were now there". When the rooms were said to be available they were filthy, yes clearly unvacuumed, with smudged mirrors, walls and doors and oh yes the sheets weren't changed on the bed in our mini suite. Yes, that's what over $6,000 before service charges and excursions got us. It was not only our cabin --it was all over the ship. The walls were dripping with sanitizer water. You could not touch anything. Every surface was dripping. Lines to customer service were very long; even at midnight people were complaining that they did not have their cabins cleaned and their bed were still upside down. Several of the crew were running around with breathing masks wiping walls and your door and handles leaving them dripping and wet. With a foul smelling disinfectant while passengers were forced to tolerate the breathing conditions with nothing. We did nothing at the first port due to late departure from ny it was supposed to be 3pm and we left at 7pm. Many brands of drinks were removed from the so called ultimate drinking package. The communication from the management was tight lipped and unavailable. From their own customer service people, "the home office is aware of the problem and has given us no answer". The food was warm to cold when served. Very bland and constantly the same. The worst food of any vacation ever. Passengers were not allowed to touch anything in the restaurants or buffett unless it was handed to us. Lines, lines and more lines. Angry, pushy staff constantly yelling about watching our handwashing and constantly trying to spray us with their mixture instead of letting us use the gel. I had to try and comfort a fellow guest who was literally shaking after being chased by a crew member because she didn't want to be sprayed. We were treated like we brought a plague on the ship, when in reality, they withheld the fact that the ship was contagious until after we were at sea giving us no way to back out of the cruise as we had insurance for cancellation. I don't know how that was even legal. Except for one comedian and the choir of men, the entertainment was awful and the only show that we booked prior to cruising (the brat pack) was canceled. The onboard activities were mediocre at best. The debarkation was just as awful as getting on the cruise. The ship had to be steamed/fogged due to the norovirus so we had to get out of our rooms early and stand around for hours so they could be ready for the next cruise. My husband and i became sick that first night home and for six days after from the recirculated air on the ship full of bacteria and germs. Who knows what all the sprays and disinfectants along with the germs being recirculated throughout the ship did to us. We had paid for insurance, but they made sure we couldn't use it by not telling us until we were at sea. So disappointed in ncl. Will think about this awful experience when booking our next cruise. Not even a follow up apology or credit on for a future cruise. Are we a valued customer? Guess not. Why does ncl have a loyalty program when they are not loyal to us? Does ncl read these reviews or pay attention to the ones we took the time to fill out for them post cruise? We haven't heard a peep from ncl. I heard jim cramer say ncl was a stock worth buying because the ceo said he had great things planned for the future and it made me more excited for the cruise. I guess i learned my lesson about loyalty programs, they only care about the haven now. New people, double the money, but i think ncl will be sad to learn that those people will expect return loyalty as well by the time ncl sees that,we will switch cruise lines. Read Less

Dream cruise. The escape is my favorite cruise ship in service. It’s incredible for its versatility, I was able to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted from playing full court basketball, to smoking cigarettes at the waves bar, to getting the best massages of my life at the Mandara after a long excursion. Alvin the cruise director was really nice and as a solo traveler I really appreciated him and the way he would party with us at spice later in the evening with other members of his great crew. The onboard entertainment was awesome, I really enjoyed the live pool band that would play around 3 pm, they really helped me relax and enjoy the time. I couldn’t have ever asked or dreamed for a better experience onboard this cruise ship and I would recommend it to all. It’s perfect for couples, family’s or anyone. The ship accomadates so much but the staff is just the greatest part about it, they always prvoided exceptional service from buffet to security to the amazing bartenders they all did the job at an A+ level. The excursions were excellent. Easiest excursion process I’ve ever had and couldn’t be happier. The food was really great from the buffet to cagneys to room service it was all great. Moderno, cagneys and the buffet were my favorites. Extremely clean ship, buffet was extremely sanitized at all times and I couldn’t be happier to see that honestly I was very impressed with the ultra cleanliness of the whole venue. Also some of the best views can be seen from the garden buffet. Very fair balanced ship price wise, lots for all to do. Bowling was fun, especially after throwing back 6-7 vodka sodas. Casino was very fun and well run as well. Entertainment was impressive. Room steward was perfect. Mandara Spa massages were excellent after a long excursion and usually discounted on shore days as well so it works out perfect. The ship accomadates smokers very well with the waves 17 bar being a nice place to enjoy a smoke if you do that. The deck 19/20 area of the ship forward along with deck 8 waterfront provide nice calm quiet at all times and some of the ships best views. Was able to be extremely active on the ship, the fitness center had everything I would ever need along with full size basketball court. Read Less

Our local senior center was offered what appeared to be a good deal for a 14 day Caribbean Cruise. We thought we would try another cruise line other than one we have frequented.. It was a good value and we enjoyed it. However, there was room for improvement. Two swimming pools with a capacity of 82 for everyone on board not in The Haven is ridiculous. This is a poor design.Cruise guests totally disregard the rule about saving lounge chairs. So, get there early at poolside. The food in the buffet was adequate; but many guests opted for the dining rooms during International and Oriental buffet nights. O"sheehan's is a really good alternative to the main dining venues. The cabin was nice and the bathroom was worth the upgrade to a mini suite for a 14 day cruise. The entertainment varied . Some acts were excellent . Some were fair. Some weren't our style. The Embarkation process was messed up owing to a virus outbreak on the prior cruise. NCL did not react well to this glitch. One guest was told her stateroom would be ready @ 11P.M. for what was supposed to be a 3 P M departure. I doubt that I will ever want to sail again from the Port of Manhattan. Certain parties ( Read as wealthy) can park where and when they want and let the busloads be damned. The port workers can also be fickle.( local & federal) One other note. The PA system is quite loud. Talking at dinner on deck 7 was quite difficult while a DJ was entertaining in the Atrium on 6 Read Less

I love NCL and the freestyle, casual cruising experience. The 14 day southern Caribbean cruise is fantastic and I have taken this cruise out of NYC for the last several years. Living in Long Island, I am less than an hour away from the pier. It sure beats flying and waiting on TSA lines or having travel delays especially when leaving in the winter. It was a rough start as the previous cruise had an issue with the norovirus and although NCL told us to arrive after 10:30 AM, their communication with cruisers was very poor in not stating specifically what the issue was and because the CDC had to do a thorough inspection of the ship, most of the cruisers had to wait on long lines outside the cruise terminal in the cold for hours. Once onboard, the wait for cabins and lines for lunch were terrible with many people not being able to use their cabins until late in the evening. We were in the Haven and our room was not ready until the evening and the lines so long for lunch, we did not have lunch but instead settled for a "liquid lunch" (not so bad!). I do understand that because of the issue, their was no choice but felt that NCL should have better communicated the situation to passengers the day before. I would have arrived much later to the pier and perhaps they should have offered a $50 OBC on this cruise or a future cruise to make amends for the inconveniences. I am sure this experience soured many and perhaps will not cruise NCL again. Once the cruise was underway, it was fantastic. The ship is beautiful, the crew great and I know they had been working long hours sanitizing the ship both on the previous cruise and this one. Being in the Haven, the cruise experience is even that much better, but with the raising of Haven prices, not sure how many more Haven experiences I will have. That being said, I love sailing on NCL and the 14 day cruise out of NYC and have signed up for next year and 2021. The entertainment was good, but I actually thought the entertainment venue was better on the smaller GEM, although a few shows were very good (Cotton Club and Men's Choir). The band in the Skyliner lounge (in the casino) were also great. My Haven Aft Facing Cabin was beautiful and I always book the aft when cruising in the Haven, even though it is a long walk to the Haven and you probably do not exactly experience the Haven experience as much as those situated in the front. I think we only visited the Haven sundeck three times during the cruise and preferred to enjoy our large balcony with very comfortable lounges. The restaurants were pretty good although some of the best dishes have been eliminated from NCL's signature restaurants (Le Bistro and La Cucina) and the cold soups (one of my favorite cruise experiences) was only available in the Haven restaurant at lunch. No doubt, the Haven Restaurant offered the best dining experience and service, but that is to be expected. The ports for this cruise are the best and although I have visited them many times in my cruising career, my favorites are still Barbados, St. Marteen and St. Thomas. We did only one ship excursion in St. Thomas...Kon Tiki and it was great. I would recommend this ship excursion as it is a very happy experience with rum punch, steel drum band, dancing and a visit to a very nice beach. All had a great time. Looking forward to next year's 14 day cruise on the beautiful Bliss! Read Less

This cruise was the second half of my B2B on the Escape, the first was the 14 day Western Caribbean, 1/6 - 1/20;2019. I've already submitted my review for the first leg. Since I was on the previous sailing I was aware of the issues they had with the noro virus and I was prepared for the sanitary procedures that would be in effect at the start of this cruise (see my previous review for the details). For many, embarkation for this cruise was not as smooth as normal. The plan was to have all passengers disembark with the last group called at 9:30 AM so they would have time to do a thorough cleaning of the ship before passengers for this cruise could board. NCL even sent notices out not to come to the pier before 10 AM. Unfortunately the last passengers did not disembark until after 12:30. This caused a large backup in the cruise terminal which was never designed to hold 5000 passengers. Since I was B2B it didn't affect me since once the ship was cleared I was allowed to go directly to the boarding door (normally on a B2B in NYC you no longer have to get off the ship, they bring customs onboard to clear you for the next cruise, but because of the cleaning I had to disembark this time). I can understand the frustration of passengers waiting to board, but these things happen. Once onboard we were told that due to the extreme cleaning going on, cabins would not be ready at 2 PM as usual. Later in the afternoon we were allowed to drop off our carry on luggage, but many cabins were not ready until later in the evening, since I had the Ultimate Beverage Package, it didn't bother me! The ship was delayed in departing because the CDC was onboard and had to clear the ship before she could leave. Again many passengers were upset, but since I was aware of all going on I was fine and felt sorry for the crew that had been working so long and hard to get the ship ready. We arrived at our first stop, San Juan, a little late, scheduled for 3 PM but arrived around 4:15. Some excursions had to be cancelled. My plan was just to walk around the Old City and hang out at Senor Frog so I had no issues. I went snorkeling in St. Thomas, Barbados, St. Kitts and St. Lucia, all with NCL excursions and had a great adventure each time. The other ports I just walked around and stopped at local pubs. I did this cruise as a solo (my wife was with me the on the first leg but she had to get back to work, I'm retired). I was in an inside cabin, not the Studio. One of the great things about NCL is the solo travelers program they have. They meet every day around 5 PM and a member of the cruise director staff organizes group dinners and shows for the group. Even though I was traveling solo, there were other solo's who I already knew and met many new friends. We had a great time at dinner and shows together. I ate in the MDR, Cagney's, La Cucina, O'Sheehan's. Great meals and service. Overall I had a great experience. I never let the little things bother me. If I have an issue I bring it to the staff's attention and get it resolved. I did have some billing issues but it all got straightened out. I had such a good time, I'll be doing the same B2B on the Bliss next January! Read Less

My husband and I booked this cruise to celebrate our 30th anniversary and came away wishing we had done anything else. Norwegian Cruise lines fell far short of expectations. At the time of booking we were asked if this was for a special occasion. We indicated to both the Norwegian online booking and to our travel company that we were celebrating an anniversary. Usually, most cruise ships recognize this with champagne, chocolate, flowers etc to make you feel special. We had to mention several times... at this point it seems like begging for what should be common practice. But this was really the least of our concerns. Arriving at port to find 4000+ passengers waiting to board and no one around to give instructions or directions to was not a good start. Nor was the Norovirus that came with the ship from the previous cruise. Norwegian took way too long to initiate their protocols put in place by CDC. It was total chaos for passengers getting on board the ship like cattle being herded to slaughter. Being yelled at by Norwegian staff and Port Authority to go here or there. Get on ship told to go to 16th floor for food. Not a seat in the place. Many of us had to eat standing up as fellow passengers were rude and not allowing those with food to sit as they played on their laptops or read a book. Norwegian should have had someone overseeing this mob of a crowd and the verbal fights that broke out in front of us. Then the staterooms all had to be disinfected so we were not able to go to our rooms until they called certain floors. This was a couple of hours more of waiting. Understandably health and safety is foremost... BUT so is the care of your passengers who paid a lot of money to take your ship over any of the others. We were not treated with respect and the staff had an "I don't care" attitude. We were unable to book any of the entertainment as the onboard screens kept telling us everything was full. Luckily we ran into the Cruise Director who was speaking with another couple of people he remembered from another cruise and they too were having the same issues so he said he would take care of it and booked our desired entertainment. Many others were not so fortunate. The ship is incredibly noisy and with the first day at sea being inclement weather, everyone was inside the ship and there was not enough space for everyone to sit or stand comfortably. Several times throughout the cruise it was difficult to find seating or a quiet part of the ship just to talk with one another as there was always an announcement or someone on a microphone saying something. Offshore excursions booked through Norwegian were overpriced for the most part and I generally would give the ones we took a slight pass at 50%. One in particular in St. Lucia was 5 hour bus tour that took us to see the volcano and promised us a complimentary beverage (which sadly ended up being a half glass of lemondade and not a rum punch or pina colada that was customary on some of the other tours). Our travel guide tried to promote his books on Amazon to the captive audience on the bus as we swerved for 5 hours with only a couple of stops along the way to get off and stretch our legs. Waste of time! Would have rather explored the island on our own. Then disembarking in New York, we were told as we were part of a group tp meet at 8:00 am to disembark ahead of the other at 8:15. Waited till 9:15 to be called with everyone else to disembark with hundreds of others all looking in thehuge warehouse for their luggage. After 30 minutes searching for our bags, then line up again to go through security. There were 16 available stations with only 4 open!!!!!! Another 45 minutes to go through that mess to walk to find our bus parked way at the end as once again there was chaos in parking and no communication to anyone. After this experience, I dont want to do another cruise ever again and especially will not recommend Norwegian as they nickel and dime everyone and are not adept in dealing with people. I would like to be contacted by someone with authority to reimburse us for this mess of a vacation! Never again!! Read Less

It was a complimentary cruise from Casinos at Sea. This was the date we were able to travel. Was not happy about waiting on line for dinners. Did not like making arrangements for shows. Was not happy about the disorganization of the ship, though I realize the cruise prior to us had Gastroenteritis and it needed to be disinfected. Pass cruises with Norwegian and other past cruise ships we found this one very disorganized which may had to do with the illness on the ship. The handling of embarkation was handled very unorganized and none of the crew handed out any bottles of water or anything to snack on while we waited more than four hours in the terminal. Food was excellent. Disembarkation went well. Shore excursions were good. Did not do much of the Entertainment as you had to reserve spots. We did not like the layout of the Escape. Very noisy in the Atrium which was hard to hear each other in O'Sheehan's and the bars. We were on the Norwegian Jade before and after its restoration and enjoyed it each time. The casino was not laid out very well. It was super smoky. You could even smell it in the non smoking section. Not enough poker machines in the non smoking section. Yes we would go on Norwegian again, but would look at the ships lay out more closely. Not enough closet space in the room. Found the room smaller than I thought it would be considering the size of the Escape. Bathroom was a good size. Like the size of the shower. The faucet in the sink should have been further out instead of so close to the sink. Read Less

Ship was 3 1/2 hours late boarding and departing. No explanation was given in the terminal. NCL didn't offer anything while thousands of people just stood around (no seating available). Could have at least had a bottle of water or a snack. Had to sanitize because people were sick on the previous cruise. The ship was dirty when we boarded. Our cabin was filthy with dirt on the floor and a layer of dust on everything. it wasn't cleaned until day 12 of the two week cruise. The cabin was small. We could barely get our bags in the closet. No table in front of the sofa. Small veranda with two non-reclining seats and a 1 sqft table. Small bath. I could barely move in the shower without bouncing off the walls, and I am not big. Several entertainment events were cancelled. Deck activities were not available for the first week. Food was very low end, unless you pay extra for the specialty restaurants. No quiet relaxing place anywhere on the ship. All places were completely disorganized and extremely slow. it took over an hour to get a bagel for breakfast. Crew, while not overly rude, were far from polite. Fitness center never had any towels. Two days the doors were closed with people standing outside waiting for them to open. An officer walked right through without saying a word and never came back to open the doors. Finally we just opened the doors ourselves and went in. They continued to sanitize for the entire cruise. That is good, except the chemicals were very irritating. About 1/2 the passengers were constantly coughing. And since they never cleaned anything, the dirt and dust made it worse. The entertainment was so-so. Two of the comedians were good. For the main show, After Midnight, many people either walked out or wanted to leave. The bands seemed to be competing for the greatest vol. They were so loud they were painful. It was impossible to hold a conversation whenever they were playing, either in the atrium or on the deck. That made it even louder with everyone yelling at each other over the sound of the music. Tobacco road stunk up the entire deck. The smoke odor was so strong we had to leave the game area there. We could even smell smoke on our deck 14 veranda (possibly from someone smoking in their room). Restrooms were never attended and almost constantly dirty. Read Less

They had gastrointestinal virus outbreak on cruise before us, we weren’t informed until we got to the port. 5000 people were standing and waiting for check in to start until 3 pm, rooms were not ready for another hours. People were sitting on the floor and staircases. And it’s only beginning. All cruise was a disaster. NCL upper managers don’t care about their guests. They didn’t have enough crew members to serve guests. Absolutely total mismanagement. But I must say our Stuart did a great job. He was great. Service in specialty restaurants was good, but in complimentary restaurants below average. Entertainment below, below average, Nothing to do on the ship. Such a disappointment. Waist of money and vacation. First time we could not wait to get out of ship. Nothing more to say. Read Less

They food was good but nearly the same menu most days. The excursions were very good. The help on the ship were outstanding. They always had a smile and tried to always anticipate our needs. There were not enough planned activities when we were at sea. The disembarkation was horrible. We chose this cruise because we'd had good cruises in the past - however, this one was anything but good. We were stood in lines outside the terminal for an hour, then stuck inside the terminal for another 2 hours, not moving; just standing, waiting (no seats - some people fainted). There was no notification as to what the problem was. We found out later about the virus problem when we saw how screwed up the ship was (waiting in more and more lines as they went totally overboard with trying to prove to us they were doing everything the CDC required. We could not serve ourselves - even with beverages. I understand there were rules laid down, but they went about it wrong, in our opinion. Too long a story for here. However, no matter who was serving us, the quality of the food (and service, in some areas) was way down from previous cruises. I actually lost 4 lbs on this 2-week cruise! The excursions were not worth the money (and in fact, some of them were canceled). The captain could barely speak English and even what he did speak we couldn't hear, since he practically whispered. In fact, we found many of the staff who were in charge of telling us important stuff had very heavy, sometimes ununderstandable accents. Everywhere we had to go there were miles to walk before we even got to the port. They need to have shuttles from the ship to wherever the excursion left from - or at least to the town. I saw many people, older than us struggling with these distances. They have a nerve calling this a 14-day cruise! What they called Day 1 was spent standing, waiting to get onboard! Day one didn't start until the evening. Day 14 we arrived at the crack of dawn and were hustled out as quickly as possible (all before 10 a.m.) to make room for the NEXT cruise. Definite FALSE information. It will be a loooong time before we think about another cruise - and if and when we do, it won't be on Norwegian. Read Less

We arrived at the cruise port in New York City just after 10:30 AM, People were left standing for hours to check in and get on board. We finally got on board after 3:00 PM. We were told that our rooms were not ready yet and had to wait. around 4:30 they finally said that the staterooms on our deck were ready. We went to our cabin to find that it still was not ready, we had to look for a room steward just to get toilet paper. Our luggage still did not arrive so we waited and waited. At 1:00 AM another passenger told us that we would have to look for our luggage somewhere on our deck. I found our luggage way down the hall, they just left our luggage where ever they could, we had to search for it ourselves. We found out that the cruise before us had a virus on board, so now we were subject to chemicales for the whole trip, they were spraying and wiping the walls, doors, door handles, elevators, rest rooms. What ever was sprayed or wiped was left driping wet. They had people in hazmat suites and masks mixing the chemicales in the halls, all passengers were subject to the chemicals. The staff on the ship were taken from their usual tasks to help with the spraying and wiping, so the passangers were short changed, there were days when our room was not made untill after 5:00 PM. The ship has to many people and was poorly managed, it was very loud and has no place outside of your cabin for peace and quiet. Dining was short changed with not enough help and a menu that had very little changes. The buffet was just ok nothing to write home about where it was often hard to find a seat and then you were sitting on top of one another. When we disembarked from the ship they called our color and had us wait in line outside in the cold untill we got into customs where there was another long line. Getting off the ship took over two hours. Standing in that long line you knew they just wanted every one off the ship for their convenience and without regard for the customers. Read Less

Embarkation was horrible, delayed, confusing and no information from cruise line as to what was going on. First week was limited public access and service due to constantly cleaning of ship by staff due to illiness cruise before! Most normal things were changed like buffet where you usually serve your self to long lines waiting because plates, utensils and food had to be served by staff because passengers weren't allowed to handle anything others touched. We lost many days of normal, proper ship services due to staff being used to clean ship but we're not given any compensation. Very little quiet places to sit, play cards, read or chat... everything was geared towards public use of space for games etc. Yet not enough seats. Ships overall layout not very passenger friendly. Most people didn't like the ship itself and wouldn't sail Escape again. Food, service, staff were the best...they just had conditions beyond their control. The ship should have come back a day earlier for through cleaning...not clean during our cruise time! Also, medical is on the 13th deck--who puts medical on a floor with all staterooms so sick people have to use the same elevators as people coming and going to their rooms. Escape is a ship I would not recommend, NCL has many other great ships. Read Less

We enjoyed the eight Caribbean Island stops and the ship entertainment. It was our first time on one of the huge ships, and overall, we preferred the smaller ones from our first six Norwegian cruises. The Escape just didn't seemed designed to service that many passengers, especially when we needed to use the elevators, get into the main dining rooms, find a place out on deck on the nice weather days, or make a reservation at a specialty dining room. We also wished this ship had a forward lounge, the way all our other ships did. We missed having a quiet place to relax where we could sight-see ahead. Not having this large forward lounge, or other large lounges, also meant that all the big group activities such as trivia, dance lessons, and games had to done in the atrium, which made that three-level center part of the ship constantly noisy instead of a nice place to relax, as it was on all our other ships. The entertainment quality and choices were fabulous. The professional shows in the theater, repeated three times each, was a good way to do this rather than the standard way the theater productions were done on our other cruises. Also, we liked the Supper Club dinners with entertainment, and the Headliners Comedy Club entertainment. The piano entertainer, JR, was really good. Since we are beer drinkers, we liked having The District Brew House with its 24 beers on tap and 50 in bottles. This was our first cruise where we could get good beers, although all other bars on the ship still served only the standard lagers. This next comment applies to all our cruises, which have been only on Norwegian, so i don't know if any other cruise lines do anything differently: We wish for more information, information, information! So much about the ship and its workings and offerings could be explained in advance, or when you arrive, rather than having to learn everything by accident, experience, asking other passengers, or never learning something at all. We knew nothing about how the Box Office worked for getting reservations all week at all the many venues that required reservations; we had to learn from other passengers, and hope that we were getting to the Box Office soon enough to get what we wanted. Even then, we couldn't figure out the list of options covering all 14 days - we just had to let the agent do it for us, and hope it was what we would like (it was). We also wish Norwegian would have information sheets to explain what drinks are served at which bars, what to expect with regard to successfully getting into the main dining rooms (we almost never could get in since there were such long waiting lines), and information to help us know various rules such as No Reserving Deck Chairs.
