We sailed on Pride of America Jan 1-8, 2011. As this was our first trip to Hawaii, we thought would be the ideal way to visit 4 islands in one trip! Unpack your bags once, no waiting in airports to island hop etc...! My husband and I (both age 50), his brother and wife (age 47) all had a wonderful time and all contended that if we returned to Hawaii we do it on the same way!
The NCL dining experience does leave a little to be desired if you are used to traditional ways of other cruise lines. I do miss the relationship you make with your waiters and other dining room staff as well as meeting new people by sharing a table. You can request to share a table, but with the Freestyle dining you would need to arrive at the same times. It takes longer to get thru the process in the dining rooms because it is not as orderly. If you don't mind waiting a bit you'll enjoy! Our food was always very good. You can always eat at your own pace at the Aloha Cafe.
My only complaint about the food, is the lack of really tasty desserts this trip. The best thing going is the cheesecake or brownie sundae in the Cadillac Diner on deck 6. I was on the NCL Pearl in Jan 2010 and thought the food was the best I had experience on any cruise.
My only recommendation is that when assigning cabins you ask if you prefer to be away from family's with small children. Although we all adore children and small grandsons of our own, the cabin adjoining 8688 had a family with small children that were fussy and crying the whole trip.
my guess is that the children were having a time with the jet lag. Children are usually on a pretty tight schedule and in our case there is a 5 hr difference. This makes for tired adults!
That's my only complaint!!
