Like everyone else we booked this cruise to visit Cuba. Despite our disappointment, we decided to make the best of it and found we enjoyed the ports and the ship itself. Embarkation could not have been easier. And going through customs in Key West made disembarkation a breeze. The ship is in good condition for her age and the activities and food were on par with other cruise lines. Some food we liked, other things we didn’t. We particularly did not care for the desserts overall. We only saw two of the shows, but weren’t particularly impressed. It may just be there weren’t our thing because others seemed to enjoy them. The reviews about cabin bathrooms are spot on. The showers are tiny, but there is plenty of storage for your things. Overall I would sail MSC again, but would like to try one of their newer ships with more bells and whistles.
The cabin size was adequate and there is plenty of storage. The bathroom shower was tiny and hot water was inconsistent. Showering was the worst part if the cruise.
We took a taxi over to the Malecon where we had reserved loungers at the Tropicante Beach resort. This was free to do. We had a nice spot on the beach, with excellent service all day with great food and drink. There was no sargassum as they have their area netted off. It was a near perfect day. You do have to deal with Beach vendors peddling their wares, but a simple “no” sent them on their way. I highly recommend this for a low cost beach day.
We went to Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth sanctuary on our own. For $30 a person we had our own personal driver who took us to the sanctuary where we held sloth and interacted with Monkeys. On the way back our driver took us to a restaurant she recommended. It was delicious. They was a fantastic day!!
We found the port easy to navigate despite its size. Parking was simple and close by.
We used the free Duval Loop bus to go to the Hemingway House. It was a great tour with interesting anecdotes about Hemingway, his wives, and the six toed cats (which are everywhere). Afterwards we ate lunch at Sloppy Joe’s which was fun. It was a hot day so we headed back to the ship afterwards as we were all pretty worn out by then.
