Billed as the most luxurious ship ever built, the Explorer lives up to this accolade. The incredible artwork and Murano glass in the public areas lend an air of decadence to the space. Speaking of space, this ship has it in abundance!
In concierge suite 644, we loved the extra room on the side of the bed which was positioned to give a view out of the windows, a genius decision. Storage space was so generous we had at least 10 empty drawers!
Dining in every venue was exceptional. Our favorite was Pacific Rim and we were able to eat there 3 times. He loved Compass Rose for breakfast and we both enjoyed dinner there as well. The menu offers a "make your own" list of entrees and sauces so you could always find something to love, even if the daily menu was lacking. It never was! The pastry chef is stupendous. Beef offerings in Prime 7 while delicious are too large. We ordered small portions of the prime rib and even then could only consume half. Avoid a starter if you dine there, but hard to do with the temptations on offer.
The most significant part of this cruise was the number passengers with mobility issues, from canes and walkers to wheelchairs They were catered to remarkably well. It was so special to know Regent could accommodate these folk.
Quality of entertainment was mixed, two shows exceptional, many average. Cruise director John Barron is a delight.
Excursions were excellent. We especially recommend Jenni's Spices Cooking Studio in St. Lucia, but submersible (Barbados), beach break (Antigua), and Sunnyside Garden (Grenada) also quite good. Due to hurricane, we visited St. Kitts and loved the Caribbean Cooking Experience as well.
The down side was the embarkation and disembarkation handled by Academy sub-contractor. Departure from the hotel was chaotic at best. Upon leaving the ship, no clear signage or direction for picking up luggage or getting to coaches existed. We were dropped at Miami airport at the wrong stop and had to walk from one terminal to another, again with no staff on hand for directions or assistance. Other cruises we have taken provided someone who escorted us to the check in desk in a timely manner.
Sadly that last experience colored our positive experience on the ship. Otherwise we would have rated the cruise excellent.
