So first off this was our fifth cruise so far and likely our last Caribbean. We may just be out of the demographic now I don't know. We have a nine year old son, and cruised this time with a large group of friends. 14 total. RCI did an ok job of accommodating our larger group, fitting all the adults at a single table in the dining room and the kids at a smaller table right next to us. I think our preferences lean more towards the European market however.
I wish I could find some critical points to fault RCI on, but quite honestly I think the worst part of our vacation was the general population. This cruise really enlightened me to just how rude, selfish, and uncivilized we have become as a culture. RCI has simply adapted to cater to the selfish desires of the 'typical American' passenger. Which in my opinion isn't very cultured, or evolved in comparison to what we have experienced on European market cruises on RCI and Symphony in the past. It's even changed vs. past cruises in the Caribbean we have been on.
First off, I should probably fault myself. I bought into the bigger is better mentality. I have seen the Oasis class and the Quantum class ships and always thought... "Wow, I'd like to try that sometime." I can only blame myself for that. A ship with 4500 other people on it is not something I will do again. Just getting around anywhere on the ship was a chore. Moving from deck 9 to deck 3 for dinner was always a task more akin to a cattle drive than anything else. Oceans of people complaining about everything from smoke on the balcony to nagging at children. Unattended children running wild riding elevators, and pushing all the buttons, kids in the dining room on formal night in flip flops and t-shirts, etc.. I'm just really shocked at what our culture has become. In retrospect, RCI has done a bang up job of providing an enjoyable vacation for those kind of people.
Cabin was clean and comfortable, but not what I would consider a suite. The level of service was standard, and the cabin looked identical to any other balcony room with a few extra feet. The television is miserable. 5 channels of self promotion, and pre programed garbage in 4 different language. If you want to watch The Big Bang Theory, or 30 Rock in spanish or french your in luck. Otherwise forget it. Maybe you have to pay extra for "premium TV".
Port Canaveral is a huge facility, however the embarkation process is like they are doing it for the first time. Massive lines, and the search and seizure of alcohol adds an unnecessary lag to the process. I think they are more focused on finding booze or irons in your luggage than anything really "security" related, and that is solely so they can milk you for their captive audience alcohol packages.
