I'd read a lot of reviews of Gem before we went. Some made me a little nervous. Well, now we're back and I want to let every family know, don't let the mixed reviews bother you. Overall, the Gem was a fantastic vacation for our family.

Husband and I are in our mid 40's. 11 yo son, 9 yo daughter, 4 yo son. Chose the Gem because we wanted an embarkation port we could drive to, and because it was a big, new ship. I did a lot of internet research, then booked with a friend who's a part time agent. We booked an aft balcony and a nearby inside stateroom. The aft balcony was large and sheltered from the wind. Also, location was good for those with kids - near the buffet and kids club.

Drove to the port from CT - easy drive up and drop off. Parked at a nearby lot for half the price of the port parking. Embarkation was a nightmare - very long security and check in lines. We accidentally ended up in the lattitudes line, so that shortened the wait a bit. Advice for families - bring the signed, notarized permission for other parent to take the kids out of the country even if you are traveling together. Husband and I got separated in the check in line, and it almost caused a boarding problem.
