We had never been in this part of the world and this was the right time to see the sights, as well as spend some quality time with other members of our family. We were not disappointed in the slightest! We enjoyed the diversity of each country. It was such a treat to meet the guides at each of the port cities, who not only lived in those cities, but were very well-versed in the history and traditions of their native lands. The enjoyable experience was then extended into the dining room, where we were greeted by friendly faces, who honestly seemed to enjoy making sure we, as their guests, were having a good time and would not go away hungry. The wine and the beer were quite fitting for the part of Europe in which we were traveling. It was a wonderful and we are looking forward to planning another trip in the near future! Read Less

Our experience with Viking was top notch! Our flight was delayed out of the US due to thunderstorms. The airline had rebooked our flights upon arriving in Germany. Viking knew that we were delayed and adjusted our transfer from the airport to the ship. We didn't have to do anything. Unfortunately, our luggage got lost in the shuffle of rebooked flights. However, when we awoke the very next morning it was outside out cabin door. As soon as we arrived on board, we were offered the chance to head up on the Aquavit Terrace to enjoy a meal since we had missed our lunch. That was wonderful! My husband and I enjoyed sharing our meals with different groups. There were about 180 people on our cruise, and I'm sure that we interacted with almost everyone at some point. There were always plenty of menu options at each meal. We generally ate breakfast at the buffet in the dining room, lunch on the Aquavit Terrace (lovely al fresco dining), and dinner in the dining room. The portions were not huge and the wine flowed freely during the dinner hour. The cuisine always varied by our location. If you didn't like what was on the menu for the evening, they always had a few standard choices. After dinner we would head to the lounge to enjoy after-dinner drinks, music, entertainment, and dancing. Our cruise director, George, was so much fun. We enjoyed the various entertainment brought on board and our on-board piano player/singer, Sylvia. Each day we went on the shore excursion (generally in the morning). These were small groups with local tour guides. My husband especially loved the smaller cities of Regensburg and Passau. I thought that each city had its own charms and beauty. After the morning tour, we were able to explore each city further on our own in the afternoon. There were optional tours each afternoon, if you were interested. I loved our tour of the Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna. Absolutely beautiful! Cruising through the beauty of the Wachau Valley and seeing the old towns and castles is something everyone should experience. We concluded our cruise in Budapest which was my favorite city. I loved being able to get off the boat and a few steps from the market, beautiful architecture, and local attractions. One evening we cruised the Danube after our dinner. Budapest is stunning at night! We did the post-cruise extension in Budapest so we were able to explore in depth. Our room at the Buda Hilton offered the most wonderful view of the Parliament. Viking sure knows how to pick the best hotel in Budapest! In general, we are in our 50s and were a bit younger than the average guest. However, these are active retirees that want to explore. We even met one gentleman in his 80s that did some ancestry exploring before the cruise and enjoyed the German autobahn where he was able to travel at speeds of 85+/mph. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we had never traveled Europe outside of London and Paris. A river cruise allows one to not change rooms, but change venue everyday. We purchased the packaged tours at every stop and they were professionally run with top notch knowledge, plenty of free time and eating recommendations. We loved the on boat activities as well as just the leisure time. Budapest to Passau, we will be booking another one on the Rhine in the future. Favorite sites stops were Nuremburg trials, city shopping, and Salzburg. We also enjoyed a ballet and musical performance in Vienna with great talent in both dance and voice by the performers. It was also fascinating to just sit up on the deck and enjoy the breeze and see the homes and castles and town squares that passed by us as we made our way up the river to our destination. Read Less

Wanted to see Southern France and learn about French wine. Learned a lot about the wine at two interesting wine tours with tastings. All escorted tours were fun and the guides were extremely knowledgable. The food was top notch with plenty of choices. Everything was very fresh. The staff are wonderful. They all seem to love their jobs- even the room stewards. Our rooms were freshen up twice a day which was nice. The ship's decor is very relaxing. We loved the 24 hour specialty coffe and tea- and the homemade cookies! The cruise director Susie was fun and enthusiastic. She had a short and informative briefing each night and was seen taking photos everywhere we went. The food, especially the desserts was amazing. Small portions allowed us to try the appetizer, main course and dessert each night. Breakfast and lunch had an incredible variety of breads, eggs, cereal, fruit, meats and cheese. We were able to eat outside for lunch a few times and this was a great experience. It was pretty hot our first few days and we sat out on the upper deck. A staff member brought ice water and later ice cream to us- a very nice touch. Only bad experience was our trip to the Marseille airport. We were dropped off a long way from the entrance and had to drag our bags a long way over some very rough pavement to get into the airport. The Viking rep offered no explanation for this nor did she come inside the airport to help passengers check in. We have taken two other Viking cruises and there was a rep inside the airport to help out. Some of the more elderly passengers had considerable difficulty with their bags and needed help. Read Less

This was our second Viking River cruise, the first being in 2014 on the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. We traveled with three other couples and had a fantastic time. Viking has river cruising down to a science, and we were blessed by good weather and river levels which meant a lovely cruise. My husband and I again opted for a veranda suite, which meant we had a small living room, bedroom, and bathroom. Space is tight on river cruises, so a suite is not the same as a suite on an ocean cruise. The difference though was nice and we appreciated the complimentary champagne and daily fresh fruit - and the flowers were lovely and were refreshed during our stay. A difference between our first cruise and this one was that Viking has made it possible to reserve shore excursions online now, and we took advantage of that opportunity to prebook some things. Mornings are included, but in the afternoon guests may opt to go on their own to explore a town, create a private experience, or take part in a selection of experiences. One afternoon the concierge arranged for the boys to play golf at a local course in Germany which my husband sleuthed -- they were absolutely thrilled to have been able to do that. The concierge was friendly, resourceful, and very eager to ensure that all the guests were able to do just what they wanted - we thought that was great. In fact all the staff were very friendly and approachable on the ship. George, the activities director, was a hoot and so very friendly. We enjoyed his daily briefings and the fact that he seemed to truly enjoy being on the boat with all the tourists. A word about the guests -- we are all in early 50s in our group and were among the younger guests. This is not really a suitable cruise for young people (kids and teens). There just is not enough for them to do. We loved it, but I know our kids would not have enjoyed it as much as the ocean cruises we go on as a family. Fellow passengers are all friendly and interested in the places visited. We made great friends in a lovely couple from England who are planning a visit to our corner of the world next year -- a connection which wouldn't have happened if not for this cruise! The dining room was consistently good. Presentation is beautiful and flavors are wonderful. My husband and I opted for the silver spirits package which I highly recommend if you are at all particular about wine or prefer specialty coffees. There are two coffee stations outside the lounge which make cappuccino drinks, but if you are like me and enjoy an espresso after dinner or sparkling water, not to mention better wines, then the package is a smart deal. We passed through more than 20 locks on our cruise, and they are fun. The highlight of the cruise was the evening sailing on the Danube in Budapest - the city at night is spectacular. The ports were all lovely and sailing past quaint villages and the occasional castle and vineyard is just fantastic. Viking does it right - we so enjoyed this cruise and look forward to planning another. Read Less

The ship is accurately represented in their brochures, very beautiful. We had a balcony room on the middle level. I would rate everything from service to quality as excellent. The staff made a point to get to know you. We chose to purchase the spirit package and after the first day the staff knew us and our beverage preferences. The excursions were excellent. Viking offered special excursions for those who were a bit less active or mobile than others, so I recommended they offer something a bit more challenging for those of us who want more activity. For example, sometimes we spent time waiting for slower people to catch up to the group (which wasn't all bad because I would use the time to further explore the destination). There were just a few times I would have liked to hike up to a castle, but the whole group wasn't up to it. My husband and I are already planning another Viking cruise, but next time I'm considering saving some money and not getting a balcony because we spent very little time on our balcony and when we were docked we were often either next to a brick wall, or next to another ship (looking directly into their room). The ship offers plenty of outdoor space for those who don't have a balcony so I want to use the money saved to do additional excursions. I like the fact that Viking offered a free daily excursion in each port, but we also enjoyed sometimes doing the extra's. Read Less

Disembarkation was so well organized but it was difficult saying goodbye. Meals were incredible as well as the wine pairing. I found my cabin to be extermely clean and will restocked each day. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful throughout our trip. At one point on the Danube, we needed to change ships due to the river level being too high. I was a little apprenhensive about re-packing and leaving the staff that soon became part of our wonderful expenience. I soon discovered that my fears were put to rest. The change went as smooth as anything I have experienced thanks to the well trained staff. Does it sound like I wil be bppking a trip with Viking again - you bet! Read Less

The Viking staff continues to excel in service and hospitality. The itinerary was a combination of small towns and larger cities. The included tours in each port were well presented by local guides who know the area well. The Danube is a working river so not as beautiful as the Rhine but did have sections along the way that were pretty. We enjoyed the outdoor eating area onboard and ate there several evenings just as a change of pace. Service and menu offerings were still very good but more relaxed environment. The evening that the chef and staff did the Taste of Austria dinner was wonderful! Very authentic and delicious. Overall we had a great trip. Not my favorite river but very interesting ports. I loved Budapest ! We enjoyed Vienna and since the Opera house wasn't an option the day we were there we elected to go to a performance at the famous Spanish Riding School on our free time. It was an amazing experience...maybe even better than a tour of the opera house! Read Less

The accommodations were beyond our expectation. From the time we arrived we were made to feel confortable and welcome. The room, balcony, the facilities on the ship were all above and beyond our expectation. The meals were great. Great and diverse selections. Often our servers went out of their way to make meals exceptional. We .thoroughly enjoyed all but one of our tours along the way. (Unfortunately one tour guide was not only ill prepared but almost unfamiliar with the site.). Other than this one bad expirence, all others tours were will organized, well presented and educational. The staff kept us informed regarding the sites we passed and were able to answer all iur questions. Although we didn't deviate from our previous arranged plans, many guests did, without problems. Never been to Europe. Wanted to see central Europe and the Danube. It was incredible. Viking did everything. It was "cradle to grave". Our air was handled by Viking. We flew directly to Europe so we only had one change to get to Budapest. Viking picked us up and took us to the boat. Our luggage was in the room when we opened the door. The service was excellent, the food was terrific, and the port excursions were entertaining and educational. I think the attention to detail in all aspects of the cruise is what made me feel as though the crew really cared about our comfort and fun. The first lock we encountered was about midnight and we had to wait for about an hour to enter. The cruise director stayed with the people waiting on deck to watch the lock entrance. By the time the boat entered the lock it was after 1 am. Now this guy probably had to be up at 6 am but as long as their were passengers on deck, he stayed there explaining what was happening. The whole situation impressed me and set a good tone for the balance of the trip. Hopefully we go on another cruise and it will definitely be Viking. Read Less

the included daily walks through towns were great. Very doable and not too strenuous. There were lots of picture taking stops and places to eat, etc. We took a side trip in Vienna for a classical music night. We did three days in Prague as well and took a trip to the Bone Church. Now that was something to see. Of course all of the meals were excellent and the service impeccable. This is the ultimate in river cruising. Going through the locks was the only time we felt any movement on the boat. Excellent experience. The cabin was spacious and we had a small veranda on which to sit and enjoy the view. The crew is helpful and polite. We were amazed at the quality of the bar choices. The weather was very good. We expected rain but got mostly sunshine. It was rather warm by the time we made Vienna. I choose a Viking cruise because of the wonderful experiences my friends and clients have had sailing with Viking. My experience was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! Friday 22April, 3P we boarded Viking Var in Budapest. Embarkation went smoothly. Disappointment started when we found out the Var would leave Budapest at 9A the next day, Saturday. Other Viking ships docked with the Var were scheduled to departed 6P Saturday. Why did the Var have to departed at 9A? We had the choice of going on the included Budapest City Tour bus tour at 830A and then being BUSSED upriver 1 1/2hrs to meet the ship OR missing the city by staying onboard seeing the "iconic" Parliament Building as we departed Budapest. (The Parliament Building is featured in many of Viking Cruises ads.) As it turned out, that was one of the only times we had the opportunity to experience viewing the Danube's beautiful scenery. Sunday 23 April, Vienna. The morning included Vienna City tour very rushed, not enough free time to experience a "famed Viennese cafe" and have the famous sachertorte. Afternoon optional Schoenbrunn Palace, again hurry, hurry, no time to see the magnificent gardens. Evening optional Mozart & Strauss Musical Evening was excellent! Monday 24 April, Krems, Austria. The included Benedictine Abbey Tour was excellent! Tuesday 25April, we were to arrive in Passau, Germany, on the ship. (Guide books say be sure to be on deck to experience sailing into "City of Three Rivers".) Instead because of lock closures before Passau, we docked down river and had to be bused a 1hr to Passau. The plan was to be bused back to the ship but luckily the ship was able to meet us. The Included Passau Walking Tour was very good. No Organ Concert. The cruise documents say organ concerts not held Nov. to April, should say THROUGH April as on St.Stephen's Cathedral website. Tuesday was our last day cruising the Danube. Do to continuing lock issues our ship had to dock in Deggendorf, Germany about 80km before Regensburg. Wednesday, 27April, we were bused 1hr. to Regensburg and 1hr. back to ship. Afternoon optional Weltenburg Abbey & the Danube Narrows tour was excellent. Thursday, 28April., we had to be packed up and on buses by 830A. for the 2hrs. drive to Nuremberg, Germany. If the tour guide or Viking staff traveling on the bus with us used the time to give us information about the countries, the people, anything interesting about where we were traveling, the bus time would not have been such a waste. Thursday night Viking put us in the 5star Le Meridien Grand Hotel, Nuremberg, very nice hotel in convenient location. Our included Nuremberg City tour was good. My overall opinion of the included city tours is average. The excellent city guides but the time allowed was to rushed. Would I go again? Probably not. I was cruising to celebrate my 70th birthday. To bad I'll remember what a disappointing experience I had. Everyone asks and is amazed at my answer. Many of the people onboard that had been on other Viking cruises said if this was their first Viking they would say never again. But their other cruises were excellent. What happened? elpful. We went with a group of friends and booked well in advance. It was our first river cruise, so we weren't sure what to expect. We spend one night in Budapest before boarding the boat. We would highly recommend the Hilton Budapest on the Buda side. The view is magnificent. We loved the Viking level of service and the fact that is is all inclusive, unlike ocean cruises where they continually try to up-sale you. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. We liked being one of 180 passengers rather than one of thousands. The city tours were all top notch. We loved the "quiet boxes" that you keep charged in your room. You take them on your tours and can easily listen to your guide without having to huddle around to hear. You have to be prepared for unscheduled changes due to the river. In our case, the German government shut down the last lock for maintenance, so Viking bused us to a hotel in Nuremberg for our last night. The buses were Mercedes and very comfortable. We felt like Viking did everything they could to keep everyone happy. One of our optional tours was cut short and they are supposed to refund half of the cost - we are still waiting for that. We would definitely travel with Viking again. Read Less

From what we had seen and heard about over the years it seemed an obvious choice for a relaxing vacation where we could explore a part of the world we had never seem. It totally met out expectations. Everything went smoothly, from the beginning as we were met at the arrival airport through the end where Viking personnel assisted us to the departing airport and were there until we left. All employees were very knowledgeable, friendly and a pleasure to be with, on and off the boat. Entertainment is minimal but that worked well for us. There is an area on top of the boat designed with a walking track but we found the excursions, package and additional, gave us a good exercise program for the week. On board, the rooms were comfortable and elegant. The food was always excellent and varried as we went from one country/region to the next. We met many wonderful people during the course of the week which enhanced our vacation. We guided excursions in the various towns were excellent. We got a well described tour of the area in small groups and then were able to continue to explore on our own. The best of both worlds. We enjoyed the fact that a river boat does not hold thousands of people. It is under two hundred. They are designed for a nice quiet and relaxing time on board. The are no children aboard because these cruises target an older group with common interests. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and cruising the Danube in April was a great value and fit our schedule. Viking took care of everything from booking, travel arrangements, destination information and highlights and a wonderful ship, friendly, service-oriented crew and great experiences. The ship was immaculate, always, and very comfortable. WIth 4 levels everything was convenient and easy to navigate. Our Veranda cabin was nicely appointed and well laid out. Dining was outstanding, with breakfast, lunch (when onboard at the time) and dinner were available in the dining room and in a cafe at the ship's stern. Service was great, menus offered tastes for all, and included local items of the country/city of our location. Wine and beer were complimentary at lunch and dinner, and a well-stocked bar/lounge offered other drinks. The itinerary included at least one excursion each day, along with several optional excursions at extra costs that could be booked well in advance. Tour guides were all well informed, pleasant, easy to understand and thorough. Most excursions lasted 3 or 4 hours with time for individual exploring. Highlights included a full day trip by bus to a castle and small village in the Czech Republic, the Melk Abbey in Melk, Austria, tours of Vienna, a wine-tasting excursion to winery in Austria, that also is Viking's supplier or house wines. Stops in Melk, Durnstein, and Vienna Austria, Bratislava, Slovakia, and Budapest, Hungary provided a wonderful taste of old world Europe, cathedrals etc., as well as modern city rural life. All in all, we could not have been happier, and would definitely go again. Viking is the best. Read Less

My brother and his wife invited us to join them and their extended family on this Danube River Cruise. We are so glad we went. We arrived in Munich 4 days before the cruise and thoroughly enjoyed the sights. While in Passau, our departure city, we had opportunity to explore it as we spent our first night on board the Viking VAR in Passau. Our embarkation went without a hitch. We were served a lunch and that was only the beginning of a week of personal attention. Food was delicious and portion sizes were just right, quality was so amazing with the fresh herbs from the rooftop deck. Every morning was a well organized walking tour of the city and upon re-entry to our ship, we were often greeted with a special treat in the form of food or beverages. No need to worry about bringing along water bottles or umbrellas as they were provided for us as we left the ship for our daily enriching experience. The VAR was top notch. Modern, clean and contemporary decor. One of the things we loved was the convenience of our proximity of our room to the dining hall and upstairs lounge. While in port, entertainment was brought on board several of the nights. Always entertaining and impressive with the quality and utilization of space available for their performances. We had a variety of shore excursions to choose from, each one very special including the unique Hungarian Horse Show and a visit to a family home in Slovakia learning from a first person perspective about the country during communist rule as well as how they make ends meet in current times. Each port held it's own educational and sight-seeing opportunities. We felt like our staff, especially the cruise director and servers gave us such personal attention. The staff musician was also talented and adapted well to the guests. Personal attention is a huge plus in the smaller number of guests in a Viking River Cruise. This cruise was in celebration of my husband's 69th birthday and 60th anniversary of his family immigrating from the region. From the moment we arrived at the Frankfurt arrival airport the Viking staff who met us were friendly and efficient in getting our luggage to the bus that took guests to the Longship Viking Var, and introducing us the the best vacation we have had in years! The cabin accommodations were outstanding and there was nothing that the cabin staff couldn't for you. Meals were the incredible and served by delightful folks who were always looking for more they could bring you to eat or drink. The shore excursions were guided by local people who answered every question with knowledge. We especially enjoyed the personal listening devices each guest wore so that one could wander at each venue without losing the guide;s message or the group. One highlight we especially loved was attending a Viking special performance at the Vienna Opera House where we were entertained by professional opera singers and we waltzed together to the Blue Danube Waltz! When we made our reservations we were a little concerned that the ship did not have an exercise facility, but with all the shore excursions we took, walking the cobblestone streets everyday and dancing on board one night to local music, neither of us gained an ounce and we ate like royalty each day and night! Our airline flights, arranged by Viking, were perfect and without any problems. We enjoyed every minute of our trip and were sad when it ended in Budapest. As soon as you came on board to the ship you felt like part of the family. Although the cabins were somewhat small, it really did not matter. The majority of the time we were on the top deck, inside the common areas, or partaking in the various tours. And, the staff made sure that the cabins were kept neat and clean. The only complaint I have is that we did not spend more time in Vienna and Budapest. We loved it so much that we booked our next trip immediately. We were looking for a low key cruise that took us to the smaller areas of interest decided upon the Romantic Danube... and we were not disappointed. I was most impressed with the level of service which began when we arrived. We were met by a Viking person who put us on a bus but also gave us some commentary as we made our way to our hotel (we extended our stay on both ends). There were approximately 200 guests on our boat which was perfect...no crowding...no long lines..perfect. The on ship entertainment was pleasurable. Everyday there was an excursion that came with the cruise that was just excellent. The wait staff were wonderful. Our cabin was beautifully appointed (French Balcony) but the room was all bed. We wished we had gotten the balcony just for the extra cabin room. The bathroom had heated floors and a double door into the shower. Very nice! The one thing that epitomizes the level of service that Viking provided was upon our departure! We had to be on the shuttle bus at 4 am...and there was a Viking representative to greet us in the lobby, give us a bag with breakfast goodies, and escorted us to the airport. If that wasn't enough, at the airport there were two more representatives who made sure we were in the correct line and escorted us up to the ticket agent, translated when necessary, then walked us to correct departure gate. It was like that the entire trip. Would we go again ... IN A HEART BEAT! Read Less

This was for our honeymoon and we both love Christmas Hence the Christmas Market Tour on Viking. The ship was fine, the staff and excursions were above average. What was not good were the meals. Dinner was close to atrocious. They served a lot of foods that most people were opting out of and even their alternates were not good. I ate the chees plate several times just to have some type of food. The worst, was the dessert. You are in Germany, supposed to have a pastry chef who was introduced and you might as well had been eating nothing because it did not have taste. Because we were there over the holiday itself there were not as many options on land to eat. The few we got we took advantage of and the last night meals were little something or another that were smaller than your finger even if there were seven courses. Also no food was available after we had a shore excursion and they charged for everything if it was not mealtime including ice tea. If you take this cruise try to eat before boarding the ship and bring food with you because they won't have any. Read Less

My wife, & I chose this cruise basically for the Christmas Markets in Germany. We have been to many of the port cities before; and we like traveling in Europe. Embarkation, & Disembarkation are extremely smooth. The ship was emaculate, and comfortable. The cabins, with the balconies were perfect, and extremely comfortable. The food was was very good, and well presented. The local entertainment, and activities were more than interesting, and entertaining. The service was 5-star in all areas. The ports, & shore excursions are very educational, & interesting. We have taken two Viking Cruises. Would we take another? We leave in two days on board the NEW Viking Sea Ocean ship, for a 15-day cruise. You could say that we like the Viking River Cruises.... I have suggested Viking River Cruises to my friends, and five couples have already taken my suggestions, and, on trips that we have yet to experience. See you in St. Petersburg!!! Read Less

We selected this particular cruise for the ports of call, Christmas markets and schedule. The pick-up at the Frankfurt airport went smoothly, no problem finding the Viking representative. We were among the earlier arrivals, yet the vessel was ready when we got there. We had plenty of time to visit the market in Frankfurt. The ship was docked within easy walking distance. The Christmas market is much larger than it first appears as it meanders through the city quite a lot. The ship was very clean and bright, the cabin and dining areas also. Don't worry about motion sickness, you can barely tell the ship is moving. The food is very good, the portions are small, but you can always get more. The service is excellent. Everyone we dealt with on the ship spoke English. The shore excursions were great. The local tour guides were fantastic. We spent a few extra days on our own after the cruise, which costs extra, even though you don't get anything for it. Even though we needed to go to the airport the same time everyone else did, we would have had to pay for the shuttle bus through Viking. As it turned out it was easy to arrange a cab through the concierge and it cost less than the shuttle would have. This was our first river cruise and first with Viking. We will definitely travel with Viking again. Read Less
