Exploring Amsterdam before sailing was an excellent way to deal with jet lag and get in the spirit of being in Europe. As the weather was lovely we spent our time wandering the city, taking a canal tour and visiting Naarden. While our embarkation location moved to outside the city center, the change was handled smoothly. A city tour was offered but since we'd already explored Amsterdam we decided to get settled on the Magni. Our cabin was cozy but comfortable. We spent little time in it as the common areas where well appointed and we took the opportunity to chat with other guests. The on-board musician and bartenders made the common room a fun place to be, with lectures, cooking and glassblowing demonstrations and game nights rounding out the program. They say an army travels on its stomach and you can say the same about the cruise. Our chef and his staff highlighted the local cuisine daily, and there was numerous options for guests who felt less adventuresome. A leisurely three course meal and open seating gave us the opportunity to meet most of our fellow passengers. There was an included tour at each stop, with optional tours available to satisfy different interests. The included tours were structured so that all fitness levels could participate, and local guides gave a personal flavor to the cities we visited. A favorite was the Chef's Market tour in Vienna. The best part of the cruise was the staff and the level of service they provided. Our cruise took place in the fall, where water levels can throw obstacles to smooth sailing. Despite the river periodically being closed our staff handled everything, from arranging buses to lunch for 200 people in a small German city. They made it interesting and fun, though I expect they were sweating the details it never showed. Their enthusiasm and care made our trip extra special. I was sorry to reach Budapest and the end of our trip. While it was necessary to vacate our cabin early we were welcome to stay on board until the ship was scheduled to leave, making travel arrangements easier to manage. I would definitely go again, and I hope you take the opportunity as well. Read Less

We liked the Viking approach. Quiet, but not dull, active, but not exhausting. We had also not met anyone who had not enjoyed their experience with Viking. We enjoyed the pace of the activities, the choices, and the guides. The food was wonderful and the portions ample but not overdone. Our room was quite nice and our steward made sure that we were always comfortable. From the moment we got off the plane to the moment we went through security on our return trip we were always in the capable hands of the crew and associates. Visiting a lot of sites could be tiring but the pace was perfect and the choices of excursions and extras was just right! We especially liked the personal and smaller groups that enabled us to really explore and enjoy so many new places. Free time was welcome because of the opportunity to stay on the ship or go for walks in the many towns and cities that we visited. The ships were very often docked in the midst of the lovely towns. Perhaps the most important part of our journey was meeting wonderful people, some of whom will be lifelong friends! We have already booked our next cruise with Viking! Read Less

Previous to our river cruise, my husband and I were approached by 2 different couples to go on a Viking Cruise. Because I hadn't retired yet we weren't able to go the 2 different times. Since we had never been on any ocean or river cruise, we didn't know what to expect. The Viking experience set the bar higher for traveling again! Even though we had taken several trips with Trafalgar and one with Globis and thoroughly enjoyed these land trips, we prefer being on the cruise where we didn't have to pack and repack. Plus we were treated like royalty with the extras of the warm wash cloths and canapés when we returned to the ship after an excursion, loved the educational presentations and entertainment of the countries we were traveling to, and eating the ethnic foods of each country. With the 2 different dining rooms,we had so many choices of what kind of meal and food we wanted. We definitely will be doing a Viking Cruise in the future! Read Less

We picked this cruise (Amsterdam to Budapest) because we felt we should take a longer cruise if we're going to fly all the way from the West Coast to Europe. It's beautiful ship, the cabin was wonderful (perhaps my favorite of any cruise we've been on), and the service was outstanding. Our only complaint was the dinner. First, we would prefer an earlier dining time. Beyond that, it sometimes took a long time to get our meal, it's very noisy and we felt the servers were pushing that evening's "special" too hard, almost trying to intimidate us into ordering it (our only service-related complaint). After the first couple of nights, our four traveling companions ended up having dinner in the Aquavit. Our menu selection was more limited, but we found the dinner there to be more relaxing. That said, the food on the ship was generally very good. I wouldn't rule out another Viking cruise. Read Less

Looked like interesting places, and the only place we'd been to before was Amsterdam. Everything about the cruise was fabulous--the ship, cabin, staff, food, cleanliness, service. From the moment we got to the ship (we had added on 4 nights in Prague on our own), we were taken care of like royalty. The meals were superb, the staff very nice. I fell on my face in Wurzburg, and everyone was so helpful back on the ship, bringing me special food when I couldn't chew much, making sure I was okay, etc. We loved the shore excursions--the local guides were all great. We were amazed at how well-designed the cabins were. Plenty of storage space. We also booked the 4 nights after we got off the ship, 2 in Amsterdam and 2 in Ghent, w/ a day trip to Bruges, which was magical! I want to go again--maybe next year. Oh, and we were on the Magni, because of the Baldur getting delayed by a lock (?), and fortunately, we didn't have to switch. We loved the staff on the Magni! Read Less

This was our first river cruise and first time to Europe and we did not want to travel on our own. A river cruise was very appealing as we aren't ocean cruise fans. The itinerary was wonderful and we planned for a year! We felt "looked after" from the minute we arrived at the baggage claim area, actually in Prague where we did a wonderful pre-extension. Transfer to the hotel, then from Prague to Budapest was seamless. The speediest check-in ever experienced was a joy. All the tours along the way were narrated by experienced local guides and very well done. We loved the size of the ship, the accommodations, the common rooms. Tasteful. The dining experience was top-notch, beautiful to look at as well as to eat. Our chef, Gabor, was wonderful and entertaining. The wait staff remembered your name from the first introduction - no small feat when we moved around to different tables. Our program director, Marek Snelly was the BEST. Entertaining, witty, knowledgeable, a most wonderful man who made the trip extra special. The evening entertainment was spot-on for the locations. The service from everyone was impeccable, always smiling faces, anticipating every need or desire. All the ports held their own magic from tiny towns to the larger ones. WE POSITIVELY LOVED THIS CRUISE!! Read Less

My husband and I decided in July that we wanted to try and squeeze another cruise vacation in this year and August, 2016 was wide open for us. Viking had availability on the Elegant Elbe tour, leaving from Berlin and going to Prague. Because we booked so last minute, we got a great deal on our flight from Seattle to Berlin returning from Prague to Seattle for only $200!! The pre and post extensions were booked so we flew into Berlin three days early and toured the city ourselves. We stayed at the same hotel the viking pre-cruise patrons stayed at. We had no trouble hooking into Vikings program director, who gave us tips for touring Berlin. The river cruise, like our two previous ones was just plain wonderful. The Viking service, food, daily tours and onboard entertainment were terrific. However, The Elbe River was very shallow and the ship was unable to get into the last port of call. The cruise director was a seasoned veteran and obviously "knew his stuff", but he kept reminding us of the shallow river situation and it tended to put a negative spin on the cruise. Also the average age of passengers was quite a bit older than the last two Viking cruises we were on. And the program director being older as well, just wasnt as much fun as the other two program directors we experienced. The only other thing, I'd like to note is that the cruise covered a lot of Eastern Germany and the history of WWII and the Cold War. The history of Hitler's regime isnt exactly uplifting and a lot of the information gained was quite sobering. But I cant believe how much I didnt know and was grateful for the knowledge and expertise of our tour guides. Read Less

I just returned from a wonderful cruise aboard the Viking Magni. I couldn't be happier with my decision to cruise with Viking on this ship/itinerary. The ship itself is fairly new (2013) and is well maintained. Since I was traveling alone I had a cabin on the lower deck of the ship. I thought this might turn into a disappointment, but I was well pleased with the cabin, its location, and the cabin service. For example, mid trip when I opened the closet door the light bulb inside the closet died. I thought about contacting housekeeping, but decided I didn't really need the light. The next time I was in the closet, the bulb had been replaced without me ever mentioning it. My room steward was that thorough the whole trip, every detail seen to. The meals on board were outstanding with only one meal being what I would rate only as average. This was due more to the meat cut than the seasoning. When the waiter noticed I was only picking at it he quickly replaced it with a different selection. All the waiters were very attentive and most of the time would anticipate your needs without your needing to ask (drinks filled, bread replaced, etc.) The included ports and tours were very good. There were only two tour guides I had (each grouping had a different guide) that were only average, but most were very informative and entertaining. All of the optional tours I took were exceptional. However, I enjoyed Rothenburg and Schonbrunn palace the most of the tours I booked. Everyone that went had great things to say about the Salzburg and Numerburg War tours as well, but I personally didn't go on those (but after hearing about them I wish I had). There were several on board entertainments offered. These were all well done. My favorite being a glass blowing demonstration. A couple of other thing of note, Viking and the program director did a wonderful job of keeping everyone informed of everything that was taking place. Any types of issues effecting our travels (traffic jam at the locks for us), we were informed as soon as they knew and we were told if and how this would effect our timetable. We were never left guessing what was going on or why. Also I was amazing at how prompt everything was. If the tour bus was supposed to leave for the ship at a certain time, it did. The buses didn't wait on stragglers. I was told that Viking had someone who stayed behind to deal with the late arrivals, but I was never late so I can't speak from experience on that, I was just pleased that since I showed up on time I wasn't left waiting on the bus due to someone else being late. Overall the whole trip exceeded my expectations. From the time I was met at the airport until I was escorted back to the airport, Viking took care of everything. I couldn't have been happier with my experience with Viking and wouldn't hesitate to book with them again. Note: I was a full fare paying passenger on this cruise. I wrote this review because I wasn't finding many recent reviews about the Viking Magni when I was researching my trip and wanted to help others who were considering this ship/trip. Read Less

To visit areas of Europe we had not previously seen. The tours were uniformly excellent. The crew was superb, especially the cruise director, Stein and the head chef, George. They made every day special. The concierge, Cathy was extraordinarily helpful and supportive and we deeply appreciate the arrangements she made for us. Ship was clean throughout, cabin was spacious, cabin service excellent. Meals were uniformly excellent. On board lectures were educational and entertaining. The Vienna concert was a true hilight of the tour. The tour of Nurmberg gave us an opportunity to see the locations which shaped World War II, and provided a conclusion to the Travis events of that time. The tours of Passau and Regensburg allowed us to see the heart of ancient European architecture. The organ concert, I believe in Passau, was a superb end to that excursion. As the Passau tour ended in the center of the city, we had ample opportunity to explore the area on our own. We found a wonderful restaurant in which we were the only Americans and enjoyed a lovely lunch with seats overlooking the Danube River. In Regensburg we ate in the little sausage shop under the bridge surrounded by local citizens. The Bishopo's Residence in Wurzburg was truly spectacular. We highly recommend this cruise. Read Less

Went on this cruise with friends who had previously cruised a European Viking river cruise. We wanted to see areas close to where our ancestors had come from, including Germany, and the Netherlands. The history and educational aspect was part of the reason for cruising, and we can say the entire trip was fascinating! The food was exceptional, and the servers very attentive. They even made sure to inform my husband if there were pine nuts in the recipes, so he could avoid them. The room was always clean, and water replenished daily. The laundry was back to our room in a timely manner. ONE thing that might have improved the trip would have been if there was self serve laundry, so we wouldn't have had to wash in the sink and drape clothes around the room! Our expectations were exceeded. We are anxiously looking forward to our next cruise, this November, to the West Indies! Read Less

The best vacation we ever had. I can not find fault with any part of this great cruise. First, the customer first attitude is instilled top to bottom. The ship was more than perfect. The cabins were so well built , beautiful, functional and the Scandinavian design was great. The bath featured a heated floor, ample room, luxury bath products and was kept spotlessly clean by the steward who came at least three times a day, when we were at Breakfast, at lunch and during dinner to turn down the beds. On the first day he noticed I had a CPAP breathing machine. He asked if it should have distilled water. A large two gallon container was in the room when we got back from dinner. The meals were superb, always a regional dish was offered as well as seven or eight entrées. The first course had four choices, a cheese course, desserts and beer and wine were free at meals. The tours were beyond compare, with gentle options for people not very fit. They have thought of everything and from the time you land to the time you board your flight home, they are with you every step. Read Less

this was our second Viking cruise. Wanted a longer trip, since we were going to Europe. All worked perfectly. Ship great. people nice. Weather great. Was surprised by some extras given to us. Well worth the price. Didn't know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. Ship quite contemporary, with nice touches. Food was gourmet, including breakfast, lunch, and dinners. Had wine every nite. Something I'm not used to. Can get quite spoiled on a trip like this. Met with tours at every stop. Local guides were very knowledgeable and provided us with great insight of all the areas we stopped at. Had lots of free time on tours to explore on our own. Also, enjoyed slowly cruising the rivers, as the host narrated along the way. Saw many castles, vineyards, towns along the way. Made for a very interesting history class. All in all, would highly recommend a Viking River Cruise. Read Less

We had no intention of taking a river cruise. In fact, we had several other vacations planned for summer of 2016 - backpacking in the mountains, camping extensively, and canoe tripping in northern Canada. When my husband ruptured his Achilles tendon, all of our plans were cancelled and we started trying to figure out how to enjoy our summer. A timely brochure arrived in the mail and, before we knew it, we were on our way to the most amazing consolation trip anyone could experience. Everything was outstanding - our veranda room was spacious and well appointed - we loved sitting on the veranda enjoying the view as it passed by. We were enamoured with the Aquavit Terrace and ate every single meal there. (I'm sure the dining room was lovely but, as you might have gathered, we're outdoorsy people :) ) The food was of exceptional quality and beautifully, expertly prepared. We purchased the Silver Service option and enjoyed a lovely selection of wines, beers and spirits. The decor and ambience of the Viking Longships is excellent - we loved our time on board which was considerable given my husband's ambulation issues. There are SO many excellent shore tours included in the trip (we felt the whole thing was an incredible value) but we opted to stay aboard some days so my husband could rest his foot. The most impressive feature of all is the quality of the staff which was consistently excellent across all categories. Well trained in the arts of serving and exceptionally friendly without being obsequious - we really enjoyed the team in the lounge who also served the Aquavit Terrace and believe their presence added greatly to our enjoyment of the trip. We came home raving about our experience and, before too long, my mother decided she needed to take the trip herself. She and my aunt are going in October - I know they'll have an amazing time. I'm jealous - I would do the entire trip again in a heartbeat. Read Less

The crew was very knowledgable on where to go at each stop if you chose not to participate in the excursions. The food was very well prepared and the presentation was what you would expect from a five star trip. The shipboard activities were excellent. This was our first cruise and would recommend this to those who are not interested in a ocean cruise. It was a nice comfortable atmosphere with considerably less people. You can be as active or social as you want. Viking definitely provides a five star experience. This was our first trip to Europe as well and the help we received at the airports was wonderful. Each port and Viking tour at each port was OUTSTANDING. The crew on our River Boat was very helpful and I must say they all went out of their way to please the passengers. This was our first river cruise and I must say that one sees sights that we would never see cruising on one of the oceans. My wife said it was like taking a train through the center of town. I only rated this cruise with 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons. First, the cabins were truly small. We didn't even have a chair in the room to sit on. It was sit on the bed or stand. The bathroom and shower made an Ocean liner cabin seem humongous. The second reason for disappointment was the lack of things to do in the evening. We missed the many different options offered on our ocean cruises. It would take an awful lot to make me consider another river cruise. We will be sailing on the ocean in 3 weeks and then again in October. We are truly addicted to travel on the ocean via a large cruise ship. Read Less

It was recommended by several friends. We were able to go early to have 4 days to explore Budapest on our own which was very enjoyable. The embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly with the staff handling things very professionally. The ship was outstanding and the staff was superb. We were able to upgrade to a mini suite shortly after we arrived and that cabin was wonderful. Because of river conditions we had to do a split ship where we started out on the Baldur then transferred half way through the cruise to the Magni. We were very anxious about this procedure but the staff and crew handled everything flawlessly! With regard to dining, we have to say we preferred the food and the chef on the Baldur. As for entertainment, activities, excursions, everything was pretty good. My friend and I enjoyed singing along with the piano man. Since our cruise straddled the Fourth of July, we started a sing along with many cruise companions who were in the lounge. FUN!! Regarding the excursions, as is common, some of our guides were excellent and a couple were just OK. Having done more than a dozen ocean cruises we enjoyed the lack of the hurly burly that is sometimes associated with them. The service was top notch and we appreciated the assistance of our cabin steward and everyone on the ship. Our Cruise Director, Mathias, was especially good and very knowledgeable about all our stops and scenes along the way. The concierge and her assistant were wonderful. While we were in Austria they made arrangements for my husband and me to hire a car to drive to my ancestral village not far from Vienna. That was a moving experience to see from where my great-grandparents emigrated. They also made my birthday and our anniversary celebration a time to remember. Would we go again? You bet we would!! A river cruise is such a different experience from an ocean cruise on a huge ship. It is so relaxing and tranquil and we weren't ready for the trip to end. Read Less

We are experienced Ocean cruisers, but this was our first river cruise. Embarkation went very smoothly, we were met by Viking staff at the airport and bussed to our ship. Our cabin was ready on our arrival and our luggage arrived minutes later. We embarked on Viking Baldur and then did a ship swap 7 days later to Viking Magni. The ship swap was a piece of cake, very smoothly handled by Viking staff. Both ships were spotlessly clean. We had a standard cabin, very small, no balcony, small window at chin level to me (I'm 6' tall). Very comfortable bed, nice bathroom, adequate storage space. It was nice, but I won't cruise in that cabin again, no place to sit down except on the bed. Next cruise will be with a veranda. Cabin was kept spotlessly clean by Viking staff on both ships. Food was excellent over all, only a couple of meals didn't suit me. Dining room was very well staffed, and the staff was courteous, attentive, polite, helpful - excellent! The same was true of the lounge and the terrace. The ports were all very nice, and the shore tour guides were the best we've ever encountered. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our shore tours. We debarked in Amsterdam for our transfer to Schiphol, which was arranged by our Concierge, another absolutely excellent, helpful Viking staffer. So, the ships were great, the tours terrific, the food excellent, the ports fun, but the very best part of a Viking cruise is their wonderful, friendly, courteous, helpful, well-trained people! Several couples were talking and came up with the idea of a river cruise in Europe. Viking was the preferred line and proved to be the best. A true 5 Star Hotel & Restaurant rolled into one that moved from Budapest to Amsterdam with plenty of sights & side trips to entertain and keep us in awe. This was a trip that gave us the most bang for our bucks... and truly relaxing. The shore excursions were planned to allow flexibility with a standard tour or to branch out and explore on our own. As with any cruise, enjoyment is enhanced with an energetic cruise director & concierge... This boat had both. The crew was extremely helpful & attentive to our needs, both the 'boat' crew and the 'restaurant' staff. The meals that were served could not have been better. FYI our group of six was 55-65, the younger end of spectrum for this cruise. Some observations about Viking and this cruise: * As with previous Viking cruise the staff was excellent, from the cruise director to our transportation coordinator from the airport... service top notch. *Did the pre cruise package in Amsterdam, Not pleased with hotel location, i would advise checking where you will be carefully based on what you wish to do in your pre-cruise time. * Ship/ cabin wonderful, very efficient, clean, comfortable. Cabin service perfect! *Entertainment caters to an older client I would like to see entertainment/music from this century, *Food is very good, above average for a cruise. Wait staff Fabulous! *Loved the port choices, some excursions better than others, ranged from A+ to C-. Some guides excellent others need to make their program's shorter/crisper I would take another Viking River Cruise. I recommend them highly for first time travelers to Europe who do not want to deal with the details of airports/trains/transport. The crew when acting as a guide were far superior to any guides we have ever had. The evening talks on what was the next day served as an excellent spring board for the next day activities. The entertainment at night at the local ports was often far superior to what we had seen on large ships. The intimacy of the small tables and excellent cuisine with outstanding service allowed to make multiple friends each new day. Our steward quickly understood our quirks and habits, making our room even more habitual. We never woke once during the night as the ship moved. We have already purchased a second cruise for our 50th in March 2017 to France because of the outstanding Viking service provided, especially the spacious rooms and now look forward to having another delightful week with Viking. The ship was not able to get tickets . I was slightly annoyed with the answer,we were told not everyone wanted to see that. That is a major attraction for Amsterdam,so many people wanted to see it. It should have been offered as a tour to take. Over all I thought the tour was good, but the sides tours should have more depth to them, not should drive by and say hi. The Viking cruise itself was terrific, as usual. The attention to detail was amazing. For example, one afternoon when we returned to the ship after a walking tour, we were handed a pure white tulip. I thought the gesture was lovely, but also thought, "What am I going to do with this tulip?" When we got to our rooms, there on the counter was a crystal bud vase! The room cabin, the dining room and the front desk and concierge service were impeccable. The food was just yummy--lots of selections at every meal. Our veranda room had plenty of space. The itinerary was busy, but not too busy. We especially enjoyed visiting with the locals in Hoorn. We got to spend an hour in a home and asked questions about life in Hoorn and were served tea and apple strudel!!! Although we booked on March 1st, for a departure date of March 31st, we were amazed at how smoothly our booking process went. Thank you, Viking, for a trip of a lifetime. Read Less

Great food. Nice that there was always some standard, right side of the menu items. Nice that there were two options of where to dine. Only bad meal was the celebration night, everybody scrambled for seats and buffet at same time. Buffet worked great at breakfast and lunch since is was over an extended time. Service excellent and staff very attentive. Excursions were good mostly, except one private walking tour we took in Amsterdam was much better than the sponsored one. Pickup and transfers flawless. There was a good amount of free time but little what I would call scenic river cruising. A little surprised at age of group. We are in our mid 60's and the vast majority were 70+. Maybe we should have expected this being tulips and windmills. This was a problem on excursions since the slower people set the pace or the groups got widely separated and at times people got lost/left behind. Wheelchairs dont work well on gravel or cobblestone. Would had been disappointed with a veranda or suite since we were sometimes docked sandwiched between other boats, although when docked the last place we wanted to be was in our cabin. TV and wifi didnt work or was spotty, but again we spent very little time in the cabin and tv and computers are not why we took the voyage There was plenty of seating (indoor and outdoor) on top or in the lounge areas. The room was good (french balcony) shower a little tight but fine. Bed was the best ever, I even made an inquiry to find out more info on it (beat our 3k pillow top hands down). Overall was a very relaxing, quiet, and safe time. Still working on losing the pounds I gained even with all the walking. . Read Less
