We toured with Avalon last year on the Danube and had a wonderful experience. So we decided to go with Scenic expecting an even higher level of service. The Scenic Diamond is a relatively new ship with all amenities. The service on board was above and beyond at every level. Sadly, the two most important parts of the on-board experience came up short. The food and wines were nowhere near the level of Avalon at any time. We tried to find wines to suit to no avail and the decent meals we had were off menu items. The entertainment was 50-60 year old music mostly for the 80 year olds on board. Many of the bus tours were delayed by hours due to poor scheduling resulting in more busing than cruising. Due to the confinement in buses my wife and I both ended up getting a virus which lasted two weeks after the voyage. I guess 3 stars may be be too high. Read Less

Scenic asked for our opinion after our first ever cruise. Here it is. The Bordeaux Affair was a fabulous cruise experience except for the total failure of the sanitation system on the ship, and partial for the remainder of the week. This failure was complete at times (leaving cabin toilets full of waste and no working toilets at all for an ENTIRE DAY). Sometimes the blockage was partial, however as our week went on, the smell of human waste increased in the hallway and was unsanitary and distressing. Our cruise director promised the entire ship would receive compensation - however for Scenic, this only amounted to an offer of 20% off everyone’s next cruise. The Scenic promise is a disappointment. We chose Scenic because of their reputation for excellence - and the cruise was excellent - however when an issue as large and disruptive as this happens - the customer should be compensated AND offered a discount on their next Scenic Cruise. The cruises are very expensive and with such poor customer service it is too risky to invest that amount of money again. It is a shame and we are very disappointed. Read Less

We specifically chose this cruise, as we watch him on PBS, and because this cruise was billed as a hands-on cruise with Burt Wolf, who would be with us in some of the towns and host special events in some towns. However, the itinerary changed after we boarded and although Burt Wolf was there, he only gave short, 15 minute or so talks on his upcoming show plans, before the dinner hour. On three occasions, he provided passengers with with a macaroon, a small glass of Cognac, and some swiss chocolates he and his swiss counterparts had developed - with strong flavanol enhancements - that allegedly help with memory. So all-in-all, we could not recommend this trip with Burt Wolf to anyone. Our traveling companions agree. One of those couples had been on a cruise with him face years ago and said it was "great" and that's why they signed up for this one. They too were very disappointed. Having cruised before, I have to say the upgraded cabin (not a suite, but not a standard room either) was "sufficient" for our needs, tight, but sufficient for our needs. The food was very good, and the towns in which we stopped along the Garonne River were quite nice. And the staff? The staff were excellent - mostly all from Eastern European countries. And the service was very good. Finally - this was billed as a Scenic Luxury Cruise. I would not use the word luxury even though this was a very good cruise. It's why we gave it an average rating. This was the last cruise of the season for the Scenic Diamond as it's now in dry dock being retrofit with a gym and either a pool or hot top. This may improve the experience. Read Less

This was the third holiday we have had with Scenic and overall it was the most disappointing. Whilst the Scenic Diamond was to the usual high standard and the crew helpful and accommodating we were happy to disembark. We felt that Scenic had misrepresented what we could expect. The river was dirty and muddy and there was little or no scenery along the banks. Our main complaint was the low standard of off ship experiences. Almost every destination involved a coach trip of 60 to 90 minutes each way and with the exception of two or three destinations they were not worthy of the long journey. The ship spent the majority of its time berthed in Bordeaux and on almost every occasion had another ship berthed alongside which either blocked our view and restricted the use of the balcony or resulted in us having to climb through the reception area of the other ship to reach land. One complaint about the staff was that the waiters appeared to have no knowledge of the Responsible Service of Alcohol policy and continued to ply clearly intoxicated persons with further alcohol. Scenic did not live up to its usually high reputation on this occasion. Read Less

If you read this review, you should also read the reviews by ChrisChicago June 2016 and disappointed traveller October 2016 regarding the Scenic Diamond Bordeaux cruise. ChrisChicago, was in the same premium/ over priced cabin as we were. This was our fourth Scenic holiday, the first three were wonderful experiences, close to faultless and we have recommended all three to others. This cruise, due largely to issues with the accommodation missed the description of wonderful by quite a margin. Our pick up at the airport was late. After waiting for 15 minutes I rang Scenic Europe, the gentleman answered promptly and indicate he would investigate and he did call back. Our pick up arrived around 20 minutes later. The late pick up was one aspect of my written complaint to Scenic on our return. There was no offer to reimburse the call charges. We had booked a premium priced junior balcony suite on the starboard side and were very satisfied with the size and features of the cabin. Of the 11 nights cruising, we spent 7 nights and a number of days moored at the dock in Bordeaux with the starboard side against the dock. The dock is a public place and there was a constant stream of pedestrians, cyclists etc all of whom overlooked the cabins and balconies on that side of the boat. The view from our balcony included the gangplank, the dock, muddy water and assorted pieces of rubbish. The promotional brochure for this cruise depicting guests enjoying use of the balcony we feel is highly misleading. We hardly used the balcony. Due to the close proximity of the gangplank and the public dock area, to maintain privacy, we had to draw the curtains morning and evening when the cabin lights were on. This was little better than a cabin with a porthole but at a premium price. ChrisChicago's photograph gives some idea of the view from the balcony. Scenic's replies to my emails regarding this issue indicated little understanding or acknowledgement that there was a problem with this situation. The off ship experiences were pleasant and by and large very enjoyable, but some involved hours of coach travel. In some ways it was less like a cruise and more like a coach tour where the accommodation was a moored ship in Bordeaux. On board, the staff, crew, service and food etc were excellent. If you're planning this Bordeaux cruise, do not book unless you are guaranteed a portside cabin. Read Less
