Except for one thing, the cruise (Castles and Legends Tour) was perfect. Excellent food and service, everything top notch. The boat was very nice and the crew were superb top to bottom. The tour guides were also topnotch, and very well versed for our tours. Only complaint was one of the optional tours we added, the Vienna Highlights tour. It was about $140 additional per person. Anyone thinking about this tour should not waste their time; just do the regular Vienna City Tour and add on Schoenbrunn Palace ($59 per person). With the Vienna Highlights tour, we got no time to shop or do our own exploring, which the City Tour did allow. The only difference was that our tour had an included lunch. It was a fixed menu (with pasta as the main course) and no substitutions. The lunch was VERY average and basically cost us an extra $80 per person, very disappointing, especially since we had to pass on the waltz class that was part of the Vienna Highlights package just to be able to see and go into some sites we would not have otherwise been able to do. Notwithstanding that, I would highly recommend this cruise to anyone (just avoid the optional Vienna Highlights tour as mentioned above. Cabins were a bit smaller than I thought but, since we did not spend a lot of time there, not that much of an issue. Read Less

My travel agent recommended it, and he has never steered me wrong, it was a father daughter vacation and we loved every minute of it. The crew, cabin stewards, everything was amazing. I think our favorite spot was Durnstein and Melk. We will definitely travel with Viking again, missed out on the extra days to Salzburg and Munich, but will catch it on another vacation. The food and the theme dinners were very good as well as the entertainment. We especially liked that the excursions we're included as well as some extra excursions. We were given plenty of information on the region we we're exploring. The airport transfers went smooth and there was a Viking representative there to assist in any way. We boarded in Budapest and disembarked in Passau, there were no bad moments or experiences. When making Port you are dropped off at the city center and easy to explore on your own. Read Less

We swore we would NEVER do a cruise because we loved traveling at our own pace and seeing what we wanted for as long as we wanted to stay. After being lured by the commercials on Masterpiece Theater on PBS we changed our mind from Never to Maybe to Let's Try It Out. What a great surprise. The cruise was not like planning and executing your own travel plan, but we saw so much more than anticipated with excellent guides who really knew the areas The ship, Viking Legend, was a 4-star hotel; the food was a winner at every meal, and the ship's crew were like friends when we came to our final destination. Viking Cruises are not cheap, but they offer adults 50+ the kind of vacation so many of us wanted at a price we could live with. Yes, were "doing it again" on one of the new ocean-going liners and looking forward to another grand experience. Read Less

Actually our trip was longer, we did the Castles & Legends tour which adds two nights in Munich, two nights in Salzburg before taking you to Passau to board the ship. My rating for the cruise portion is definitely five stars - I had a couple of issues w/ the land portion which I attribute to rainy weather(no fault of Viking), the newness of the land portion and logistics, and the Munich hotel that we stayed at. The service was impeccable on the Legend, from Program Director David Morgan (who was absolutely the best organizer & communicator) to our cabin housekeeper, Timea. Viking runs a very organized program and ship which made for a stress-free vacation. All we had to do was show up, they brought our bags in, and we unpacked, and we just let Viking organize our lives for the next eight days. Food was excellent, interesting entrees and starter courses; nice variety at breakfast(including sparkling wine @ 7:00 AM!), bounty of salad at lunch as well as interesting small plates of appetizers, a variety of main entrees for lunch or you could have a casual buffet lunch up in the lounge. In fact one day I wasn't interested in the luncheon entrees so I went up to get a burger from the casual buffet and brought it back down to the restaurant. River cruises don't overfeed you (though you can overeat) like big ocean cruises, but we always had cookies available all afternoon w/ the coffee & tea service. I did mention the sparkling wine at breakfast, beer, wine, soft drinks are included w/ lunch & dinner and they served very nice wines(local to the region) - not some box wines. Almost all excursions are included, there are a few that are optional and cost extra. Program director David would do a briefing each evening to discuss the plans for the next day's excursions and any needed changes. With regards to ports, I wish we had arrived at the ship earlier to see Passau, we only did the walking tour & organ concert and then sailed by 1:00 PM to get to our next destination. We only have a few hours in Bratislava - for some reason I thought we had a much longer period - it would have been nice to have spent some more time there. Coming into Budapest at night was stunning - Viking had really thought through this itinerary for the most visual impact. We were very busy every day going on excursions in our various ports. Going to Cesky Krumlov was an absolutely delightful day trip. There was some entertainment each night, but quite frankly we were beat by the end of the day so we were not interested in staying up. Viking would provide bottled water in your cabin and also provided bottled water as you left the ship for your excursion. For disembarkation, some had very early flights & had to leave before breakfast was available, Viking provided wrapped sandwiches in addition to pastries for those folks to take with them, a very nice touch. We appreciated the lack of formalness for dinner - made it much easier for packing clothes. If you book your flights w/ Viking, they handle all transportation to and from the airport. We went to Budapest airport via bus depending on our scheduled flights. There were two Viking reps at the airport but they were useless; on a Sunday AM, there were hundreds of passengers for Lufthansa and the queues were unbelievably long - the departure terminal just cannot handle the volume of passengers. Probably would have been better to stay a couple of extra days in Budapest and leave midweek. Other reviews were critical of the age of the Legend - it was fine, maybe the curtains are bleached from the very hot sun and the carpet is well walked on but the ship was very clean. I had heard that it was being taken out of service. With regards to the land portion of Castle & Legends, my first poor impression was checking into the Westin Grand Munich - we had arrived on an early AM flight, picked up by the Viking rep, bussed to the hotel and then proceeded to sit for several hours before we were provided a room, Viking should consider making arrangements w/ the hotel for arriving guests to have a room even if check-in is not suppose to be until 3:00 PM - front desk was unfriendly and curt when checking about availability and while we were waiting, another group of tourists arrived and they were given their rooms right away. The Neuschwanstein Castle is high up on a road that is at least a steep mile climb up. Either Viking needs to make special arrangements w/ the shuttle company to bus everyone up or include in the literature that it is a strenuous walk up. As part of our Munich City tour we stopped at the BMW building - not sure why - and got into Salzburg about 5:00 PM at the height of rush hour. Traffic on the interstate was extremely crowded late Friday PM - would have been better to leave Munich earlier and miss all the interstate traffic on a Friday afternoon. Sheraton Salzburg was an excellent hotel, conveniently located by Mirabell Gardens and close to the Old Town - Salzburg was very worthwhile to visit. On Sunday, we did the Sound of Music tour(including Mondsee) & Sankt Gilgen which is near Mondsee; we seemed to be spending time in these villages (for lunch) when we could have gone ahead, traveled to Passau, get settled on the ship where there was a light lunch being served and have a chance to see Passau. Especially since it was raining heavily all AM which made it unpleasant for touring sights. We were extremely pleased w/ the cruise & ports - so glad that we chose Viking and the Danube for our first river cruise. We have already booked a two week river cruise on the Seine & Rhone for 2017 with Viking! Read Less

We chose this cruise to see a different part of Europe from those previously visited. The cruise and tour were very well coordinated with the staff and crew anticipating our areas of uncertainty and individual needs. We particularly enjoyed the tour guides in the smaller cities who shared their childhood memories in their home town. Several of them had visited, or lived in the US, which gave them insight as to how we would interpret their presentation. They also gave us the best value lunch suggestion (Travellers Pub in Chesky Krumilov) Food was very well prepared, though central European entree cuisine is , by nature, redundant. The American options, available at every meal were a welcome alternative. Portion sizes were moderate, allowing enjoyment of multiple courses without overeating. Beer and wine, included at lunch and dinner, were terrific. We were encouraged to bring aboard local wines for between meal enjoyment . These were inexpensive and excellent as well. Unlike other cruises we have been on, the staff did not pressure us to buy "extras" . but rather quietly suggested and additional complimentary glass of wine or beer to take up on the sun deck after meals. The viking representative at the Budapest departure airport was particularly helpful in a chaotic check-in process. While the cost of the trip was significant, there were no surprise costs and no skimping. THe value was very good. Read Less

From the time we landed in Munich to our debarkation in Budapest, Viking handled everything smoothly and seamlessly. Our hotel rooms in Munich and Salzburg were extraordinarily good, and the cabin aboard the Viking Legend was comfortable and convenient. The food was delicious and well presented, with an interesting variety of local fare, served with bottomless glasses and cups of beverages of our choice. The staff was not only professional and efficient, but they seemed to truly enjoy their work, indicating to me that they are well taken care of by their employers. No personal request was held to be inconvenient to them. Our tours and excursions were guided by local people in every port, so they knew their subjects intimately. The drivers were smooth, efficient, and personable. Onboard entertainment was interesting, too, though the lounge entertainer for cocktail hour and evening hours was rather too schmaltzy for our taste. We also had plenty of time to wander in each port and to hang out onboard, so we were neither over-stimulated nor bored. It was an ideal vacation, the best we've ever had, and I look forward to cruising with Viking again. Read Less

The Danube River is a main artery of the Austro/Hungarian Empire. The local guides at each port of call took us on coach and walking tours. Their personal as well as their academic knowledge of the local history brought the history and culture alive. Their courtesy went well with the ease and informality of our experience of each place. Furthermore, we were very well taken care of by the staff. From the time of our airport arrival to the day we disembarked, no step was left to chance. And from the cabin attendants to the waiters to the Captain, everyone seemed more than competent and very happy in their work. They made small yet thoughtful gestures to keep us feeling at ease, such as greeting us with cool drinks at the end of a day's tour, special birthday treats, and smiling, generous responses to any special request. The food was delicious, wholesome, and beautifully presented, complemented by good wines, the best German beer, and fresh fruit juices. We felt that we lived like royalty for a week. Read Less

We sailed on the Viking Legend from Budapest to Passau, and what an amazing trip! The crew were all friendly and went out of their way to make us feel at home; the guided tours were fun and yet I learned more than perhaps years of history lessons taught me about the areas. If you've taken larger Caribbean cruises, set aside your expectations. This was a smaller ship, with less "amenities", yet more comfortable. While I didn't have a whirlpool, I also never spent time angling to get a seat somewhere. The more intimate atmosphere lends to a more relaxed scene when you're on board, so in that sense, it's more relaxed, more low-key. However, the "excursions" definitely are more involved (and many are included!), giving more activity, and letting you see more of the real area, which I appreciated. In short, my Fitbit logged more activity than a typical vacation, and yet I was more relaxed and renewed at the end of the cruise than most of my vacations! Read Less

We wanted a great first European experience. We had seen Viking ads and the river cruise sounded idea. We chose The Danube Waltz cruise for the targeted historic cities. Our cruise experience was superb. We selected a 3-day pre-cruise option in Prague. Our luggage, including a walker necessary for my wife's mobility, did not arrive in Prague when we did. The Viking staff at the hotel immediately got to work to meet our needs and ensure that the luggage was located. We had it the next morning and the accommodations to meet our needs were very timely and successful. Prague was a beautiful pre-cruise experience. We loved the opportunity to see highlights of the city on our orientation tour, and the freedom to walk to the Old Town Square and explore on our own. When we arrived in Passau to board the ship, the cruise director met us when we first got on the ship. He escorted us to our room, explained ship procedures, and made us feel welcome. Staff attention for our special needs was great. The excursions at each stop were entertaining and informative. We loved the wine tasting tour in the Wachau Valley. We purchased vouchers for our next trip because we knew we would schedule another river cruise with Viking. Read Less

My brother had taken two Viking River Cruises and highly recommended Viking. His s advice was outstanding, as was the service provided by Viking. From the ship's staff to the bus drivers, all were focused on ensuring exceptional service to their guests. The food on-board was exceptional, as was the choices available. The cabin stewards were also exceptional - - ours greeted us by name each and every time we'd meet. She was absolutely delightful and very attentive to details. The many excursions were professionally managed and highly efficient. The buses were modern and very comfortable and the tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly. We had a medical emergency during one excursion when a senior citizen collapsed in a remote area during a return to our tour buses. While other people went for help, I stayed with the passenger and kept him calm and composed. The time it took to get a medical team to our location our bus departure time in jeopardy; however, the tour guide ensured all were on board before departing. The care shown by the tour guide and staff was truly remarkable. In the end, the passenger was fine and he moved on with the rest of the group. Read Less

We chose Viking because advertising works! We were extremely pleased with the cruise and Viking itself. Service was outstanding, the food tasty and the excursions generally well done. We picked a time of year when the weather can still be cold and we experienced that for the first part of the cruise. We even had snow flurries. By the time we got to Budapest, however, the temperature reached 70 degrees. We chose to use air miles so we did not use Viking's air options. We added a day and night on our own in Budapest following disembarking the ship. The staff members from housekeeping to waitstaff, to the concierge, to the program director and the crew were all very professional, helpful and friendly. The cabins were small as with most cruise ships, but they were well laid out, clean and comfortable. We had absolutely no complaints and would do a Viking river cruise again in a heartbeat. Read Less

One night in December 2014 a friend and I were talking about our "bucket lists" and I mentioned doing a river cruise. She had already been on 2 river cruises with Viking and said she would like to do another. After some research on the internet, 6 ladies from the Ottawa area all went on the "Danube Waltz" with Viking. I can't say enough good things about the whole experience! The best part of the cruise was the staff on board - they were exceptional! Our program director, David, was a master organizer as well as a very good entertainer/singer. The concierge, Ivana, went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect, including making sure that our group was in the archway of the Hofburg Palace when the Lipizzaner horses were being takin into the arena for a practice. The wait staff was exceptional, particularly our favourite, Darwin. We even enjoyed Captain Geza and Zoltan's company for dinner one evening. From the time our flight was met in Berlin until we were all safely on the plane in Budapest for our return trip to Ottawa, we didn't have to think about a thing other than having a good time! The ship was sparkling clean and extremely well maintained. There was lots of room on the top deck to do laps or just sit and watch the world go by. Our cabin was spacious, comfortable, and immaculate, thanks to a dedicated housekeeping staff. The food was out of this world! The portion sizes were perfect, the menu varied, and who doesn't enjoy a glass or two of free wine? Every day we were given a choice of activities for shore excursions that were all led by extremely knowledgeable guides. Our group did two excursions that were not included in the cost of the cruise and they were both worth every penny we paid. One was to see Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna and the other to see the Hungarian Horsemen outside of Budapest. Read Less

I have traveled much of the world, but on this Danube cruise, I saw beauty that I've never experienced before, starting with our pre-extension in Prague, Czech Republic all the way through our post-extension in Budapest, Hungary - eye- popping and jaw-dropping. All in all, one of the most awesome trips ever! The history, the guides with so much knowledge, kept us enthralled throughout this trip. Of course, I cannot forget the staff of the Viking Legend - they went above and beyond the call of duty to make us feel as if we were the only people aboard. I really cannot express anymore about this as it was just too wonderful and exciting and I really am at a loss for words (and that's a good thing). I will cherish these fond memories for a lifetime. We chose this cruise because we had taken another Viking river cruise in 2014 down the Rhine and were very impressed by the overall experience we had with Viking. The Danube cruise was even better. The cruise/land tour package that we did was called Legends and Castles and we would recommend it hands down. We started the trip in Munich, saw Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria, and then went on to Salzburg in Austria, where the Hotel Goldener Hersh was a very pleasant surprise. Then we were taken to the ship in Passau, went to the Czech Republic, saw Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest. The staff was excellent, the food delicious, and the cruise a pleasure. We wil use Viking again, should we decide to do another river cruise, and want to try Viking for ocean cruising now that they have entered into that area as well. In short, do this cruise! Read Less

The ship was lovely. At one port we had to walk through two other ships that were not Viking ships, we noticed that our ship was much nicer than either of the others. The cabin was spacious enough, and was better laid out than any other cruise ship we have been on. The dining was excellent, the portions were just right; we were not "overfed" which was a plus. The entertainment was delightful with much of it being local performers. The entire staff and crew were friendly, helpful, and courteous. The included shore excursions were excellent. We spent two days in Budapest before we embarked, so we should have skipped the Budapest tour. The embarkation and debarkation process were made easy and seamless. We have already scheduled another Viking Cruise for September 2017. We loved our Viking cruise. We have cruised with a number of cruise lines on both ocean liners and small ships but this was our best experience so far. We loved the casual attitude and the friendliness of the staff and fellow passengers. We sailed from Budapest to Passau on the Danube. We took the optional pre-cruise extension in Budapest. We were met at the Budapest airport and the two of us were given a taxi ride to our hotel with a driver who pointed out the sights along the way. The hotel had perfect location in the Castle District. Our room had a "picture-postcard" view of the Fisherman's Bastion, the Danube and the city. It was a very convenient location for sightseeing on our own. The Viking concierge in the hotel lobby was helpful. The hotel restaurant was good. We were impressed by the fact that foods were labeled with any common allergens they contained. This was a big help since my daughter has food allergies. On sailing day we were transported from the hotel to our longboat. Embarkation and disembarkation was easy since there were fewer than 200 passengers. We enjoyed our fellow passengers. They all seemed to be experienced travelers who were on the cruise to absorb as much of the local culture as possible. It was interesting to talk with them about other excursions that they took if there different from ours and about other cruises they had taken. Entertainment was limited to music in the lounge in the evenings but every day before dinner there was an interesting presentation on where we were going the next day. Service was excellent. The staff quickly learned our preferences. We were especially impressed with the maitre d' and chef who met daily with my daughter to determine what foods would be safe for her to eat. If there was nothing suitable on the menu something was prepared especially for her. The food was good but not gourmet. Because of the small number of passengers the menu selections were limited but if anyone did not what was offered he could always order some items like steak that were always available. The inclusion of unlimited beer, wine, and soft drinks with meals was cost-saving. Almost all of the shore excursions were also included in the price of the cruise which also saved us a lot of money. Because there were so few of us getting on and off the boat it was fast and easy. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. The ship docked in the downtown area of the cities and towns so it was easy to go sightseeing or shopping on our own when we had free time. I would highly recommend this cruise for people who want to learn about the places they are visiting. It is not for anyone who cruises for amenities on board such as the casinos, the pool, spa services, gourmet food, or Broadway-type entertainment since there are none. I think the cruise would not be suitable for small children but mature teenagers would probably enjoy it. We look forward to taking another Viking river cruise soon! Read Less

We have done many ocean cruises at various price points including the Haven on the NCL Breakaway, crossings on Cunard, but this Danube trip was our best cruise experience ever - and we had one of the lowest priced cabins!! The ship was fine, very well maintained and the cabin was very comfortable and larger than expected. But the main thing was the staff –they could not have been better. We made our own arrangements and traveled by train from Munich to Passau, arriving rather early, around 11 AM. The ship was ready for us, the staff welcomed us warmly, handled our bags right from the taxi directly to our cabin. We had to wait about an hour before we had access to our cabin – but in the meantime, we enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch in the lounge, with wine and beer poured freely, what a great welcome. Plus we enjoyed lovely live piano from the excellent in house musician, Peter. The young man in charge of the buffet, Ashley, could not have been more friendly and helpful and offered us various delicious lunch treats. When our cabin was ready, one of the nicest and most efficient employees, Nicola, showed us to our cabin, and assisted us with setting up the luggage safely for unpacking. We were pleased to find out that employees do various jobs on ship, and Nicola turned up again in the dining room as our favorite waiter, though waiter Jason also provided incredible service. Tables are not assigned, and while we were traveling with friends, we met lots of other fellow travelers during the course of our journey. We found that our fellow travelers were very friendly and good natured – I don't believe I heard one complaint or encountered one cranky passenger during the entire week. A miracle! We enjoyed gathering in the lounge with friends every evening before dinner and listening to wonderful live music from musician Peter. Having such a talented musician on board and his playing live every day was special. The food was amazing, the breakfast buffet was great every day but the waiters would bring you whatever you wanted from the kitchen and serve it to you, and after day 1, Nicola brought me my preferred breakfast each day without my even having to to ask. After one day on board, it seemed like everyone on the staff knew all the passengers by name, and also their food and beverage preferences. A full sit down lunch was offered every day in the main dining room but also a slightly lighter lunch buffet was offered in the lounge, and we usually ate lunch there, tried to keep it a little bit lighter calorie-wise. Hard to do with such delicious choices of food and free pouring of various beverages. Dinner was excellent every evening – and we enjoyed the local wines and beers that were offered, but if you wanted to buy a bottle of different wine, or a cocktail, prices were very reasonable. The dining room manager was excellent and monitored the room constantly. We enjoyed the ports of call, we took part in all the Viking excursions that were included, and the buses were very comfortable with very competent drivers, and the local tour guides were all very knowledgeable and friendly with excellent English language skills. Our program director Vlad was excellent, and provided us a short briefing each evening as to what was happening the next day. I found that very helpful. Head Chef Marius was great and even provided me with copies of certain recipes of dishes that I really enjoyed. A Highlight was sailing into Budapest at 11 PM – the city was so beautifully lit and the entire experience was just fantastic. Disembarking the last day was the best disembarking experience we ever had. We were one of the last groups to leave the ship at 11:45 AM. We did not have to be out of our cabins till after 9 AM, but had the run of the ship, including an invitation to the lunch buffet that last morning before we left. We used Vikings transfer service for transport to the Budapest airport and it was worth every penny, the rep met us at the airport and facilitated the checkin process in an unfamiliar airport. I liked the trip so much, I bought vouchers on board for my next Viking cruise, can't wait!! Read Less

I always swore to never take a cruise, however several friends persuaded me otherwise. My biggest challenge when I returned was to find a "favorite" part of the trip. Every part of the vacation was magnificent. The accommodations were superb, starting with the the people that ran the operation. Customer service for Viking obviously was the main priority. The food prep, from presentation to taste, I am still talking about. All of the meals had relevance to the country and city we were visiting, which I found amazing. Cabin's were very clean, information prior to tours extremely informative and the tour guides were so knowledgeable. I appreciated the size of the tours were broken down into easy group sizes. Entertainment was great in the evening. The expectation for the trip prior to leaving was "high", but Viking Legend even surpassed all my expectations. I was concerned about safety prior to leaving, but really had no issues during the entire cruise. I will definitely take another, but not certain where I will be going. Read Less

This was our first cruise, if I have to dress for dinner, I won't go. We went 3 days early to spend some time in Munich (was stationed in the area while in the army). Munich should be a pre-cruise choice. Took the train to Passau and had no trouble finding the ship. During the cruise all of the excursions were great. Especially the "Back-stage tour of the Vienna Boys Choir" where we got to hear a 45-minute concert by one of the choirs and meet them afterwards. The castle in Bratislava is really impressive at night. The Hungarian horsemen tour was surprising, I didn't know what to expect, but it was fantastic. David, the Program Director was exceptionally good. The cabin was plenty big enough for us. Always clean and neat. The food service was special. I had a diet-coke (my preferred caffeine) at the table for breakfast almost before I sat down. The food was excellent. I enjoyed the Chef coming around to talk to everyone. The only downside was something that can't be foreseen, low water in Budapest. We didn't miss anything, just had longer bus rides to places and back to the ship. All in all it was well worth doing. We have been telling our friends that they should go. Read Less
